Dimitri and Fleche

The comparison between Dimitri and Fleche, particularly in how the fanbase reacts to them, is brilliant in a meta-narrative way.

Fleche is so directly a reflection of Dimitri that he even acknowledges it (the key difference is her target for revenge actually did do the things she accuses him of, but oh well), but a lot of folks (mostly Edelgard detractors, it seems) scoff and act as though she's undeserving of sympathy because, well, she's such a minor character, who gives a fuck about her? (Their words, not mine).

And that's just perfect! Just as Dimitri getssympathy from the fans because he's a main character while Fleche does not because she is not, the other heroes excuse him for mistake after mistake after bloody, violent mistake because he won the genetic lottery by being born the Crested son of a Crested son and Fleche doesn't because she wasn't. It's a perfect little microcosm of the world Rhea created; the high-born and the Crested can do whatever and get away with it, while the commons can fuck off and die.

Azure Moon AU where Caspar recognizes Fleche and... intervenes after the whole Rodrigue debacle

Caspar now has to answer for an extremely traumatized teenage prisoner of war as tensions and resentment escalate around camp. The Faerghus Four are really conflicted about the whole thing but mostly stay out of it. Mostly. Others are not so charitable

But Caspar sees the good in everyone and is determined to not give up on Fleche... He knows he could never replace Randolph. He knows Fleche hates him and thinks he's a traitor. His own side of the family was never close to Randolph's due to the inheritance feud, but none of that matters now. He is tired of fighting family and friends and if there's anything he can do for her then you bet he is going to try to save this one person

Crimson Flower may be compared to Persona 5 for the way they both tackle taking down corrupt people through unethical means and even if society scorns them for it, but the Black Eagles themselves feel more like SEES to me.

Their house leader is literally just Mitsuru if the P3 fanbase calls out her flaws more, but there's also how both groups have the competitive guy with a repetitive catchphrase, the menacing looking emo guy who is surprisingly the mom friend, the popular girl with sass who is a bit of a man-hater, the guy unbothered by things who likes napping, the blue guy who is a lovable memelord, the short haired cutie who likes plants and staying in their small space, and the intelligent gal who tries to go with the flow with what others say but is also filled with whimsy.

In line with the Fire Emblem multiverse analogy: it's like saying wait no, there's another 3 Houses rep:

But she doesn't even contribute to anyone's character arc, just shows up, commits some Women's Wrongs, and gets killed off.

Nice nod towards that both her and Gao Qiu are from the same book, but also feels like the writer going "yeah these 2 characters are all you're gonna get lol"

thinking once again how the only Shui Hu Zhuan rep in Iron Widow was Gao Qiu. The annoying griefer. Imagine if someone wrote a fire emblem multiverse novel and the only 3 Houses rep was like, Thales.

Like yes, his antagonism ultimately drives the overarching story, but he barely has a solid presence at all. He's threatening in the "blergh" way and not the "oh.....my god...." way.

At least the second book apparently has Di Renjie my Man who is the protag's historically accurate platonic bestie which is cool.

(This came to me all at once at work today. Sorry for the long wait, anon!)

Manuela wasn’t really in the mood for people. After the battle to defend Garreg Mach from the Church’s forces, Manuela felt drained. She believed in Edelgard’s cause, and she believed in Byleth-- but facing Seteth and Flayn directly like that...

With a sigh, Manuela turned her steps towards the dining hall. Perhaps some food would settle her mind and body. At the doors, however, she was waylaid by Caspar von Bergliz. 

“Professor Manuela? I need your help with something,” he began.

Manuela grimaced. “All these years and you kids still call me professor. It’s cute.”

Caspar frowned. “Uh, then how about Miss. Manuela?”

“I... like that less, I think.” She waved a hand as if to bat away the subject. “What do you need, Caspar?  

“It’s my Aunt Fleche. I don’t think she’s doing great. She hasn’t had a meal with all of us since... well, since Uncle Randolph died.” 

Manuela’s chest tightened. They had lost so many in that fight that it all blended together in her head. It was shamefully easy to forget the names and faces, and she had definitely forgotten Fleche this week. 

Caspar went on, “She sticks to the training hall during the day, and I’ve checked on her at night but she’s almost never in her room. I don’t think she’s sleeping well. I’m getting real worried, Professor.”

“I can see why.” Manuela turned the options over in her mind before settling on one. “Take me to her. I’ll see what I can do.”

Caspar brightened. “Thanks!” 

A short walk later, the pair entered the training grounds. On a bench, lance across her lap, sat Fleche. She looked up through dirty bangs as Caspar and Manuela approached. Bags pulled at her eyes, and her clothes were caked with dirt and dust.

“Hey, Fleche,” Caspar said with obvious awkwardness. “Uh, did you wanna grab dinner with us?” 

Fleche shook her head, eyes falling to her lance. “I was just taking a water break. I should get back to training.”

Caspar turned to Manuela and gestured helplessly as if to say See what I mean? Mindful of the lance, Manuela sat beside Fleche. “How are you feeling, dear?” She asked. “Any muscle pain or injuries you want me to take a look at?” Fleche shook her head again. “Would you like us to bring some dinner here? Then you can get right back to training.”

“I’m not hungry,” Fleche said. 

Caspar scoffed. “You can’t get stronger without eating! You have to feed your muscles and get energy and--”

“You heard the lady, she isn’t hungry,” Manuela interrupted. Something like betrayal crossed Caspar’s face before he turned sheepish. To Fleche, Manuela said, “If you don’t need food or healing, then I know what you do need.”

Fleche looked to her, expression flat and disinterested. “What’s that?”

Manuela wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “You need a good cry.”

“Cry...?”

“Yes! Believe me, dear, it works wonders. Crying has helped me through many lonely nights.”

Felche tried to push away. “I don’t need to cry. I need to get stronger! I need to be stronger than the people who killed my brother!”

“Yes, yes, you can train all you like. After you cry a bit.” Manuela pulled Fleche back in, reaching up to run her fingers soothingly through Fleche’s unwashed hair. 

“I-I don’t want to cry!” Flech protested again, though she didn’t move. “Crying doesn’t solve anything. It won’t b-bring Randolph back.”

Manuela felt Fleche tremble and enveloped her in a proper hug. “I’m not worried about Randolph,” Manuela murmured. “I’m worried about you.”

A sob finally forced itself out of Fleche, and then the girl was gripping Manuela tight and crying into her shoulder. Manuela didn’t try and shush her-- she simply tucked her chin over Fleche’s head protectively and held her, letting tears and snot soak into her robes. The lance rolled off Fleche’s knees and clattered to the ground, but neither moved to retrieve it.

Caspar sat on Fleche’s other side and began rubbing her back. Catching his eye, Manuela saw a few tears gathering on his cheeks. Caspar wiped them away with his free hand, shaking his head as if to say they weren’t important right now.  

But they were. Caspar was coping better, but his grief couldn’t be ignored. Perhaps tomorrow Manuela would prescribe Caspar his own dose of A Good Cry. For now, the two sat in silence, and listened with broken hearts as Fleche mourned her brother.

I can’t believe there’s someone that defends Fleche of all characters, the sister of an NPC that barely matters, and she doesn’t even exist in Wind or Snow.

I know some people just hate Dimitri and the Kingdom and how “they reinforce the establishment” but to say that Fleche was in the right to murder someone while trying to murder another person is just baffling. The whole point of that scene was to show how the mentality of revenge killing fucking sucks but it’s not an excuse to act like an asshole, and that’s a part of Dimitri’s arc.

And then the person said Rodrigue deserved to be killed by her for being a bootlicker, lol. It’s funny.

Some spicy NPC love, but I really want to S-Rank Randolph and give him all of the love and support and the family he deserves. And just hold him. And reassure him. And make him laugh. And just make him happy. And be a big sister to Fleche because she deserves to have someone she can turn to while her brother’s deployed; I’d imagine the poor dear gets nightmares about it quite often,,
