Can I ask what's so bad about Joann fabrics? It's the only fabric store in my area so I can't really go anywhere else.

Well, first of all, I’m spoiled as a mofo, because I grew up two miles from a giant fabric store in Beaverton, and I knew of at least three more across Portland that were under an hour away if I needed them. 

That being said, Joanns selection is just... dismal, even by low standards. More often than not, a literal 1/3 of their selection is polyfleece, another 1/3 is quilting cotton, and then 1/3 is their attempt at actual apparel fabric. 

In the apparel fabric, they have no concept of natural fibers. In most places they seem to stock maybe two shades of 100% wool, possibly black and white actual linen, and if you’re really lucky, there’s a 100% silk hiding in the upholstery somewhere. Most of what they sell is either 100% poly or 100% rayon or some sort of blend that preferences the plastic side of things. 

Just to contrast, the store I’m most used to at home was about the size of a normal “big” JoAnns, but had literally ALL fabric, none of their “crafty” stuff, which, let’s be real, is like 2/3 of the store. 

Anyway, at home, the “fabric” section of your normal JoAnns is the size of their upholstery section. The rest of the store is ALL apparel fabrics. They have a huge bridal section with chiffons and charmeuses and satins and crepe backed satins and taffetas and dupionis in both silk and rayon and poly, they have at least two 10 foot long bolt runs of nothing but wool, they have performance fabrics like Supplex and Gore Tex, they have two bolt holders of jersey knits, they have an ENTIRE WALL OF TRIMS, they have silks and rayons and a couple of racks of really well sorted quilting fabrics in fun prints, and then they have the flatfold section, which is the entire run again, just off of their bolts and for less money. 

And this is a fabric store in Portland. Don’t even get me going about my favorite store in NYC (shoutout NY Elegant!) where it’s two floors you can literally only walk one person across through where they have literally every price point of literally every fabric you could ever even consider wanting in any style and any print and any color you could even hope to find. And if they don’t have it? The place next door might. 

So yeah, JoAnns might be all you have, but after you see the scope of the stuff that’s actually around out there in the world of fabric, and after you get to somewhere with an actual fabric store, you’ll start seeing that JoAnns is sort of just a shitmonger that plays mostly to quilters and crafters, and is an awful parody of what a fabric store SHOULD be. 

And don’t get me started on some of the people they hire. (Any costumer who’s worked there will back me up on this one.)
