Update from my Dorset farm:
Today, everybody has working flat out to make sure all the animals, and buildings are as safe as they can be ahead of Storm Eunice, which is expected to hit in the early hours of Friday with wind speeds of up to 100 mph.
I found it hard but, enjoyable. It is the first time I have had a chance to get to know the new farmboys, since a big turnover of staff towards the end of last year.
It is two years and one day since Storm Denis damaged the roof of my farmhouse... and that was not nearly as severe as the weather we are expecting tomorrow. All the cows will be kept in the barns, or the small adjoining meadow, the heavily pregnant ewes are now in the lambing sheds, and gates have been closed to stop the pigs foraging in the woods. All the tractors, farm machinery and my car are under cover, and the diesel generators are ready to be started up, if needed.
The next 24 hours could be a little scary but, I am confident that my investment in new farm buildings and barns over the last three years will protect us from any significant damage.

The Old Rectory Pool House, Dorchester
The Old Rectory, Pool House anf Gym, Dorchester Listed Building Development, English Architecture Photos
The Old Rectory Pool House in Dorchester
11 Feb 2022
Design: Adam Knibb Architects
Location: Dorset, south west England, UK
The Old Rectory Pool House, England
Adam Knibb Architects were appointed to design a proposal for a new pool house and gym at the Old Rectory site in Puncknowle, Dorchester. The site is an existing tennis court within the grounds of the Old Rectory, a grade II listed building. The Old Rectory site also consists of a grade II listed dovecot adjacent to the main house and a seperate cottage/outbuilding. The site lies within well established, landscaped grounds with a number of mature hedges and trees surrounding the site and falls within the Puncknowle Conservation Area.
With the site’s existing built form and landscape features in mind, every effort was made to ensure the proposed scheme ties in with its surrounding context and sits comfortably within the landscape. This has been achieved through materiality, form and siting of the buildings.
The proposed buildings have been arranged in an ‘L-shaped’ format, with the larger building to the north of the site presenting itself as a contemporary interpretation of the more traditional pitched roof buildings on site. A standing seam pitched zinc roof with glazed gable ends ensures the buildings ties in to the existing built fabric on site through form and materiality, whilst also establishing its own contemporary identity. A second building with a flat roof which sits slightly lower runs along the eastern edge of the existing tennis court and as a result, forms a southern facing courtyard between the buildings. This picks up on the existing walled garden to the north of the main house. This is further enhanced by a stone wall wrapping the boundary of the new proposal.
This not only creates a sheltered entertaining space, but also ensures the new proposal remains visually contained and ‘reveals’ itself as the building is approached from the main house.
The material palette has been selected with the existing landscape and buildings on site in mind, and focuses on using natural materials which take reference from the surrounding context. The new buildings are predominantly clad in stone to pick up on the existing local stone used on the surrounding buildings. Parts of the buildings will also be clad in vertically laid timber which picks up on the established trees surrounding the site. This is combined with contemporary glazing with minimal framing to not only let large expanses of natural light into the building, but also to maximise views out to the landscape and enhance the indoor-outdoor connection whilst inside the building.
It is anticipated that the new addition will embed itself into the site and appear part of the surrounding landscape through its visually unobtrusive forms and site specific materiality. This will be further enhanced through additional landscaping to soften the built form and provide a visual buffer between the main house and the new buildings. A new terraced garden to the south will also link the changes in level between the new building and the top of the existing tennis court banking through landscaped steps and a winding ramp for future usability. Through a holistic approach to both the building’s form and its surrounding landscape, the design aspires to create an addition to the site which responds sympathetically to its context and creates an addition to the site which is both functional and aesthetically appropriate to the area.

Modern day three decker permitted on Dorset Street, but with hopes it can be built to glance significantly less like a 3 decker
Tumblr media
The Zoning Board of Charm on Tuesday authorized construction of a contemporary three decker at 34 Dorset St., but with the condition BPDA designers work with the developer to insert a pitched roof and probably some dormers to make it look more like most of the other houses on the street – and even the housing development throughout the street.
Whilst two neighbors claimed they supported developer Adam Sarbaugh’s proposal, much more than 100 other nearby inhabitants signed a petition opposing the proposal. A person resident who testified reported that neighbors felt the making would be way too large – it would be the next premier on the street – and extra that aesthetically, the developing just would not in good shape in on a street with primarily slanted roofs.
She famous that even the Bellflower Residences throughout the street have pitched roofs. Having said that, the new three-device creating would be up coming to an current a few decker.
Sarbaugh’s lawyer, Nick Zozula, reported he was not certain why Sarbaugh went with a flat roof, but stated it was probably it was so he could get whole living room on the third floor, which may not be doable with a slanted roof without the need of necessitating one more variance, for general top.
The board unanimously authorized the options. Member Joe Ruggiero moved acceptance topic to BPDA structure evaluation. He reported the space difficulty may possibly be solved with a combination of a pitched roof and dormers.
The proposal phone calls for three parking areas.

Mr Mortice
Rigby Mortice is a lovely old chap, with a walking stick and a tweed flat cap. He’s got white hair all over his head and face, and he lives in this lovely old cottage with a thatched roof. Every morning at Ten o’clock sharp, he leaves his home and shuffles off to the shops to grab a copy of The Telegraph, a carton of Orange Juice and, on a Saturday, a Cadbury’s Twirl.
“Hello Mr Mortice.” Says the Saturday Girl with a smile “I’ve already got your usual behind the counter. Is there anything else you’d like?” “Hello dear,” Mr Mortice replies “Thank you for doing that. Very sweet of you, very sweet.”
Mr Mortice hobbles over to the till and gives the Saturday girl a folded ten pound note.
“Thank you.” says the fair haired employee with enthusiasm “Here you are.” She passes Mr Mortice a blue bag, in which is his copy of The Telegraph, a carton of orange juice and two Cadbury Twirls.
“Thank you so much.” Mr Mortice utters, his wrinkled face forming a smile. He inspects the goodies in his bag.
“I’ll just get you your change, don’t go anywhere!” The Saturday girl laughs. “I’ll sprint out that door if you’re not careful! This walking stick’s nothing more than a prop. Haha.” Mr Mortice says with a wink. His eyes flick to the name tag on the shop assistants uniform. “Candice.”
“Yes?” The brown eyed girl replies.
“That’s your name. Candice.” It was quite clear Mr Mortice was thinking out loud.
“It is, you remembered!” Candice chirped. “Here’s your change.”
“And here’s something for you.” Mr Mortice pulled out one of the Cadbury Twirls “I won’t be needing two.”
“Oh no, I’m so sorry. I must have put a second in there accidentally. Here, let me get you your correct change. I’ve totalled it up totally wrong.” Candice begins poking different buttons on the till’s screen, clearly flustered.
“What’s fifteen pence? You eat it, have it on your break.” Mr Mortice chuckled.
“Well…” Candice sighed “The chocolate bars are actually seventy-five pence each and I don’t actually get a break.” “No matter the cost. That chocolate bar is yours now. Scoff it down now, why not? Do you think I’ll tell on you to your manager?” “Promise you won’t tell - and that it’s okay to eat it?” Candice says reluctantly. “Absolutely Candice.” Mr Mortice’s eyes twinkle.
“Thanks Mr Mortice!” Claps Candice gleefully, ripping the foil off the Cadbury Twirl. “I missed breakfast this morning, I was late for work.”
“It’s better to be late than dead on time.” Mr Mortice laughs.
“Aren’t you wise.” Candice mewls with a mouthful of chocolate “Wish the girl in that paper had received the same advice.”
“How do you mean?” enquires the wrinkly codger. He pulls the copy of The Telegraph out of his bag. The headline reads:
“Danger for Dames as second Dorset damsel disappears.”
“I knew her” Candice sighs, “Not well, she went to my school but we were in different years.”
“Poor girl.” Mr Mortice frowns at the image of the missing girl. His eyes glaze over with sadness. “Look after yourself, Candice. Be careful with how you get home from now on.”
“I know. Mum’s terrified because she thinks we look alike.” Candice chuckles to herself. “She held me up this morning saying I shouldn’t be out alone. What murder is going to be around on a Saturday Morning?”
“The worst kind.” Mr Mortice says firmly. “Keep your head on your shoulders.”
“Right you are.” shrugs Candice incredulously “But, I think I’ll be alright.”
“You better be.” says Mr Mortice “You’re the best employee this place has got!”
“Oh, you’re a charmer Mr Mortice.” Giggles Candice “Get yourself home, say hi to Oliver for me.”
“I will, old ‘Liver’s not the dog he used to be but I’ll try and walk him up to the shop next week so you can see him.” Mr Mortice turns to the door. “That would be lovely! Be seeing you.” waves Candice. Mr Mortice totters to the door and pushes the door open. He stops momentarily and then turns back to Candice. “Say, Candice. Do you have a pair of tweezers I could borrow?”
Down the gravel path, through the flower filled garden Mr Mortice wobbles. He pulls his keys out of his jacket pocket and admires his chrysanthemums and Monkshood flowers.
“That new fertiliser is good stuff.” Mr Mortice mumbles to himself.
The keys in his hand jingle loud enough to wake liver, who’s sleeping on the other side of the door. He lets out one singular, weary bark. “Just a second, liver. I’m now opening the door.” He puts the key in the lock, fumbles with it for a short second, then turns it and opens the door. liver woofs lazily. “Off the mat please, liver.”
Liver shifts his body off the doormat and rolls on the floor. Mr Mortice tickles Liver’s belly. “Candice in the shop says hello” He smiles “You’ll get to see her soon, I hope.”
Mr Mortice struggles up the stairs. The stairs have been difficult for Mr Mortice ever since he had a hip replacement two years ago. He takes his time with the stairs. “Time spent now is time saved later.” Mr Mortice Wheezes to himself.
Finally, Mr Mortice arrives at the top of the stairs that lead directly to his bedroom. It was a humble arrangement. A neatly made, double mattress in a dark oak frame and a large ornate dark oak wardrobe were the only two pieces of furniture in the room. After All, you need only somewhere to sleep in and somewhere to store your clothes in a bedroom. Mr Mortice shuffles to the wardrobe and pulls a pair of pink eyebrow tweezers from his jacket pocket. He pulls open the double doors of the wardrobe revealing a crumpled, thick, woollen bedsheet. Mr Mortice sighs. He removes the blanket.
“Hello darling.” softly speaks Mr Mortice.
The blank, cloudy brown eyes of a fair haired girl stare blankly. In truth, her eyes didn’t stare at all.
She was dead as dead could be.
“You’re in the paper, my dear.” He spoke just as soft as before. He sighed. He took the tweezers to one of her glazed eyes and plucked it out from it’s socket.
“Liver.” Mr Mortice called “Time for dinner.”
