A late goal by Eastleigh Town’s Ben Wright sealed a home victory for the Spitfires against a mediocre offering from Andy Scott’s Aldershot Town, writes Flash Shot from the Silverlake Stadium.

Eastleigh are a modest club with big ideas, while the Shots at this level continue to be the ‘bigger club’ (at least in the mind of our fans). For the opening day of the season, the ESS attracted 1,800 home fans on a sunny day. The ground and facilities were perfect.

On a cloudy, rainy Thursday night on a tufty pitch surrounded by tin terracing and wire fencing down some country lane off the M27 we made up half the crowd. Does this really make sense? The self-love of our loyal fans (look ‘ow much we do for you, we’ll follow you anywhere) does start to a feel perverse. I, for one, would much rather watch football at Aldershot. And I would rather give my money to my club, too.

I suppose it makes some feel that we are the big fish of the division (showing the village how it is done) but I hope that those that read will take time to reflect and actually starting to support our team at home, rather than spend even more of our wages at other clubs. At the end of the game, our ‘big time’ fans sang at the Eastleigh home end: ‘Will you come to Aldershot? This song should really be sung to ourselves – to each other, and in no way is it terrific. Let’s all remember we were recently bust.

The complacency also seemed apparent on the pitch. We had acres to spare over a poor Eastleigh side, and no-one had a bad game – but no-one had an especially good game either. In a match of non-action it was simply time to rest the pen and look on through glazed eyes. Odd moments of moderate entertainment. A tackle from Lathrope, some skill from Jordan Roberts. Glenn Wilson looked okay at the back.

The light rain landed very wetly on the tin terracing and the Eastleigh fans banged on their metallic stands to emulate the sophistication of our drum kits. God, we should have won. This game was simply one of those days.

Because of a lack of individual character or spark, I have marked all the players 6/10 and attach the following comments:

Smith: Could do nothing about the goal, lashed in from close range Gibbs: Got skinned a few times but otherwise ok Wilson: Un-flappable. Cleans up any mess with minimum of fuss Oastler: Again he was ok, that sort of goal happens to defenders Barker: Reliable and decent enough Forbes: Not really a playmaker, but works in decent combination with Lathrope Lathrope: One or two chunky tackles, gets around Moseley: tried harder than most to make things happen Roberts: Was our main threat tonight, but lacked a final ball Williams: he was okay, but did not receive service. Did his share of work.

Subs: Scott bought on Hatton, Fitchett and N’Guesson at different times and like the rest of the team they all had limited impact
