Anomalops katoptron, the splitfin flashlightfish, is the only member of its genus! Flashlightfish are named after those bioluminescent organs underneath their eyes. It’s likely they’re used to communicate, confuse predators, or attract prey, but we’re not so sure yet! Despite their bioluminescence that brings to mind the deep sea, they live in relatively shallow waters! They’re even seen in the aquarium trade!

Flashlight Fish

Flashlight fish's half-moon shaped spots: small organs that house light-producing bacteria. The fish can "blink" dark membranes up to cover the light. Actually, their "blinking" means that they are "rotating the light organ backwards."

New pressure oc came to me in a vision… his name is richie lazlow and he’s a janitor/former experiment under urbanshade (human spliced with leopard seal, orca, and flashlightfish in an earlier version of what sebastian went through with less desirable results, that being that he can’t actually breathe underwater, though he can stay under for much longer than a regular human) he’s trying ti clean up in the wake of the lockdown in the hopes that when urbanshade inevitably regains control of the blacksite, he won’t get punished or something

u work at an aquarium :0? what aquatic beasts are your favorites???

I work at a handful of places loosely connected to the aquarium as well bc it's all a tourist trap. I haven't really worked with the individual animals much (mostly doing admissions and food service) but ive been to the aquariumsince i moved here. Anyways I am in love with our giant pacific octopus as she is gorgeous. I also like our moray eels bc I'm an eel freak who knows too many eel facts. I usually eat lunch in the jellyfish area with headphones in bc I love our lion jellies they're so gorg. My final favorites are the secret tank of flashlightfish in a weird little crawlspace I found on the previously mentioned field trip.
