Chainsaw Man Chapter 145: Kumbaya
Wow, a whole lot of questions have arisen from this chapter. Yoshida appears, Asa makes a move, the prophecy creeps ever forward as the Chainsaw Man church is captured. Fujimoto can make a lot happen in a chapter when they really want to.
So, Mr. Public Safety Devil Hunter here says two interesting things to open up this chapter. He talks about wanting War to mutually destroy Chainsaw Man, and he alludes to Chainsaw Man being God. Yeah, capital G there.
So, what do they mean? Clearly, Public Safety (through the Future Devil) became aware of the Nostradamus Prophecy a while back, and have understood that Denji has a key role to play in it. Fami corroborates this theory as she tries to weaken him.
And the second image. Well, that one's sort of obvious. Chainsaw is revered as a Devil unlike any other, the only ones we've not seen it conquer is the primal devils. Even then, he got pretty close with the Falling Devil.
Anyways, one of the big reveals of the chapter: the Justice Devil.
When you look at its design language, you see nothing of the fiendish appearances from previous instances of "justice devil" contracts. So what could be going on here?
There's a few ideas, but first its important to gather up the facts.
Firstly, the corpse of the Justice Devil was beneath the Chainsaw Man church. Secondly, Fami at the minimum had control of the Falling Devil. Third, the Justice Devil and Falling Devil appeared at sunset and the Falling Devil returned at sunrise. Fourth, the devil that has formed contracts with people throughout the story is claimed to not be the Justice Devil.
So, my first theory. The Justice Devil actually did form contracts with the individuals in question. However, these contracts weren't formed on Earth. Devils "forget" about Hell, but are a new iteration of themselves each time they appear on Earth. The "them" that exists in hell is the original, so what would happen if someone formed a contract with a devil in hell? It's not the most likely, as Fujimoto probably hasn't mislead readers with the identity of this Devil, but you never know.
The more likely theory though is that the Devil that formed a contract with these individuals under the guise of the Justice Devil, is the same one that gave Fakesaw Man his abilities. But what could it mean, is the real question. Does this unnamed Devil impart the abilities and nature of "Justice" onto individuals in how each person understands it? The class president and the Chainsaw Man church believer both sport at least a little similarity in design language with the idea of multiple heads, which makes sense given the selfish nature of each. Yuko's appearance though is largely different from theirs, which is once more understandable considering the difference in reasoning.
So, what could this devil that's been masquerading as Justice be? I think the one that comes to mind the quickest is "Desire", or something similar. The Devil requires the ability to fulfill the interests or needs of the individual, and to do so in a very direct way. Yeah, we've seen a lot of this "Justice" in Part 2, but we should remember that in part 1 almost all the devil contracts out there did not do anything to change the appearances of the individuals forming the contracts. The only example off the top of my head is the Zombie Devil.
But going further than that is the question of how Fami got this Devil on their side, and even further why she's playing so many angles at once. Betting on "both sides" she aims to kill Asa and Yoru, but also empower them through the Chainsaw Man church? There's a very long game going on here with Fami and the Nostradamus Prophecy, and I'm very very curious to see how it all ends up going down.
Anyways, here's another Asa door moment. Couldn't be a CSM protagonist without them.
Following this, two very big things happen. The first is the sun goes down. Drawing attention to this is signaling that another devil will appear. Whether it's a primal devil or not, or even potentially the revival of the Justice Devil I've no idea, but a threat looms on the horizon.
This idea begs the question of why the weapons were trying to create a massacre at the amusement park today though. It seems probable that their entire goal was to have a new devil appear come sunset (considering Barem's reaction), so it makes me wonder why they would try to do something so pointless.
The second though, is Asa's arm getting cut off. This is really big for two reasons. One, badass Yoshida in action looking like a young (and hot) Kishibe.
Secondly, and more importantly, it's the first time Asa's been severely injured since Yoru revived her. What are the mechanisms for regeneration and healing with Asa? How much can she heal, if it all? Is regeneration entirely on Yoru, does she have to be in control of the body to heal?
There's a lot of questions with this piece, because unlike all the other hybrids that have a "starter" for their transformation, Asa's is implicit. There's nothing that "kickstarts" her hybrid form, simply because she doesn't have one. Does that mean that she'd heal closer to how a Fiend might? That is, the act of transformation alone cannot regenerate or heal like it does for Denji?
I'm very very curious to see what happens here, because oddly enough this is a piece that can massively affect how we view exactly what Asa and Yoru are.
We're quickly barreling towards the date of July 18, 1999, the date of the last lunar eclipse of the 20th century, and with chapters like these we're piling on all sorts of curious odds and ends that will undoubtedly play a role in this impending night of terror. Really can't wait to see what Fujimoto does with it next.

okay so, i'm sure this applies to nobody else, but i'm absolutely OBSESSED with the unnamed weapon humans in chainsaw man.
despite how little they appeared, and the fact we don't really know anythin about them (much less their personalities), their designs are AMAZING, imo. The fact that none of them are confirmed dead after the control devil arc just gets my mind GOIN, and i might end up writin smth about them (and maybe Reze, Samurai Sword and Quanxi)!
I think they're super inventive designs, and it's a shame we prolly won't ever see em again.

sooo chainsaw man chapter huh
#chainsaw man spoilers#read it soon as it came out just haven't said anything bc like.#while good! and dramatic and shit! it doesn't leave room to talk really!#my only real 'thought' is that makima might not be able to 'control' people who genuinely love her???? because i'm still flying by the#'barem wasn't being controlled' boat#doesn't necessarily contradict the free will theory or take away from his character too too much#out of ALLL the weapon humans he still stuck out as the least... reverent. i don't mind that he LIKES makima because that#him being like. chainsaw fan number 2 to her. but like also being makima fan number 2 to denji. theres something there sdglkdhhklgsd.#that said it does take away a BIT of his edge for him to still believe makima's 'peace' crap. unless thats just him lying again.#ANWYAYS#back to the 'makima can't control blablabla' thing:#but that makes it wierd that it transfers onto other control devils' ability to control people#maybe its like. both.#like that its both because 'barem's heart belongs to her' and also that barem wasn't under literal control#or. something#also like damn is kishibe just DEAD already? he felt competent at least to run a better operation than public safety currently has.#did fami just fucking kill him. is he out of the buisiness for some fucking reason???#OH ALSO barem being less makima-centric despite still bearing allegience to her could also be due to how flamethrowers are kinda intertwine#conceptually with 'fire' and fire is a really fucking big name#similar armor to pochita. like if a darkthrower existed it would also -while not COMPLETELY deny access like Chainy. would neuter makima's#degree of influence#fallingthrower.....

Okay so this upcoming arc is going to be insane.
Let's fill out my thoughts here.
First off, The FIRE DEVIL. This is pretty bad news due to the new Chainsaw zombies running around, but also- the fear of fire. Who benefits from that?
Who do we know that relates to fire?
Who introduced the contract???
Barem. AKA, the Flamethrower Devil.
Not only do we have a key player hybrid relating to fire, but the Fire Devil's contract just created 30'000+ Chainzawmbies (Chainsaw Zombies) that are now running wild through Japan, Canada, and I believe Mexico. These people are going to WILDLY boost Denji's power due to the fear of Chainsaws, and more specifically Chainsaw Man, which they embody.
These Chainsaw People have the same saw placement as Denji does, and by extension Fakesaw Man. Could Fakesaw Man have been a progenitor/test for these? I think he was.
Now, that's not all. We have Chainsaw Man growing in strength because of the Chainzawmbies, who are in a war against humanity, therefore benefiting the War Devil.
Let's take a look at the Horsemen's Plan, however. They plan to have a Chainsaw War against humanity in order to boost their respective Devil's power levels up enough to combat and defeat The Death Devil themself.
But, surely you all remember, in Part 1 it was stated that every Devil hears the revving of Chainsaws before it dies and before it's born. If this fear of the chainsaw is instilled into every being, an army of killer drones will certainly grow this power.
What Fami and the others fail to realize, however... people are going to die. Chainsaws Kill. War Kills.
This "plan" is only going to make the Death Devil stronger, possibly infinitely. The more people are scared of Chainsaw Man and War, the more they'll be afraid of Death by association.
Fami and Barem aim to Kill The King, that being the Death Devil, but their plan is only going to make their situation worse.
How many people are going to die in the span of six months?
What the hell can any of them even do against the most primal fear known to humanity?
They're Fucked.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 140: Scales
Phew, it's been an unbelievably busy day today so I haven't had the chance to sit down and read today's chapter until just now. Thankfully, it was worth slogging through the day to get to this super interesting chapter. Plenty to point out and lots to discuss!
Denji might be an idiot, but he's not stupid. Right away he realizes that children and students are what populate the halls of the Chainsaw Man Church, a paragon on purity and goodness, and definitely not a cult like Miri points emphasized earlier.
Also, Nobana here is confirmed to be Kobeni's younger brother. No real surprise, but the position he's been placed in makes things far far more interesting. Is he here without Kobeni knowing? Is he here because of Kobeni's association or link to Special Division 4? It's an interesting question to pose, but regardless of outcome almost guarantees the fact that she'll reappear in the story at some point.
Anyways, although there's a lot of interesting pieces to this chapter, there's also a bunch of funny ones thanks to the all encompassing nature of the Chainsaw Man Church. I mean, what's a church without a Chapel, right?
Even through these funny moments though, the chapter does well at keeping the gears turning in your head about what the purpose of it all is. After all, it was shown in part 1 that Denji's powers were weakened when more people started cheering for him and thought of him as less scary. Could Fami be placing the same importance into the fanaticism of the Chainsaw Man Church to ensure that Denji isn't powerful enough to interfere in the prophecy?
I'm not sure, but what I'm sure of is that Miri hates America.
In more interesting terms, we get another confirmed Hybrid Devil with Barem, the Flamethrower Devil. A very interesting character for sure, they tease a lot in regards to Denji's character, and probe rather deep with what seems like malicious purpose.
Right away Barem gets to pushing Denji's buttons, trying to coax Chainsaw Man out of him. How he phrases things and how he approaches Denji, it's all to get a rise out of him to get him to do something.
Alongside that though, he attacks Denji's heart by offering a choice: Chainsaw Man, or his daily life? There's a lot to take in here, but Fujimoto makes an incredible choice in paneling with when Barem presents the options. Rather than one half being Denji, and the other chainsaw man, both are Denji. Because, well, Denji is Chainsaw Man and vice versa. The entire idea is inseparable from the person, even if Denji is in deep enough a hole to say it was Pochita that fought Makima. It's a great piece that addresses the Denji beneath this outside version, reassuring readers that Denji isn't as shallow as Part 2 can present him to be.
Also, does Barem potentially have a contract with another Devil? I don't know if it's possible for Hybrids to really form contracts, but the idea of scales really brings up the concept of Justice, which has shown to be a devil that's played quite the role in Asa's life so far. Can't really help but feel like there might be some extra influence in that regard.
Getting to the end, the pressure Barem puts on Denji is too much for him to handle, so he books it, leaving the two hybrids standing there on their own. There's not much to it aside from Barem's dialogue, but it's really great in spite of how little there is. The script flips from Denji to Chainsaw Man, and Barem essentially offers a threat that Denji won't be allowed to stay out of this fight for much longer. Thanks to that, a really interesting spider's web appears of what it is the Chainsaw Man Church is attempting to do to Denji. In the end though? It appears the end goal is to place him under the control of Fami. To starve him of his attention, his title and the life that he worked so hard for, to bring him to his knees in as many ways as possible. Each and every character wants to break down Denji until Chainsaw Man is all that's left. And with each chapter, that goal ends up closer and closer.
It's a really great chapter for how short it can feel. Though we have a bit of filler with how weird the cult of the Chainsaw Man Church is, we still get plenty about Denji's spiral towards the end, and Fujimoto continues to do a great job with this more slow and methodic approach. Also, the odds of Denji bumping into Reze in the Church while he feels from Barem feel incredibly high, and that really seems like it'll be the nail in the coffin. I can't wait to see what the next chapter holds!

Fire, death, and being human
This chapter was INSANE
my favorite part about chainsaw man is how everything always ties back into the main themes, my favorite one is the act of being human and what makes you human. Denji at the beginning of the series was at rock bottom. You see him grow and basically LEARN how to be a human being. He learns relationships, goals, and wants he is being built from the ground up and i find that beautiful. The issue with Fami and Barem trying to kill the death devil (which they need chainsaw man to do in order to eradicate him) is that the act of death is the most human thing.
Fami wants to take down the death devil and this is in order to stop the devil doomsday. She fears the age of devils will arise causing humans to disappear. But getting rid of death is getting rid of the most human part of being a person. If she kills death do you think this will cause a domino effect and weaken mass amounts of devils?cuz rlly almost every fear allegedly goes down to death. It’s just the primal instinct. The reason abstract concepts cause fear is cuz of how peoples brains have adapted to nowadays and associate the same kinds reaction if that makes sense. just wondering what the consequences of this would be
This also takes us back to Makima. Makima wanted to kill the most powerful devils to create her "perfect world". Not only do i feel like this was in an act to search for that connection that she wanted with poochita (which is a human aspect that she could never obtain) but her perfect world would destroy the “bads”. Yall remember her saying there would be no bad movies? People need the bads to have the goods. And not only that but you can find the beauty in "bad" things just as much as good things.
I think the most jaw dropping thing about this chapter was the MILLIONS OF FUCKING CHAINSAWMAN ZOMBIE PEOPLE. can we talk about how impactful this is going to be on denji? this totally flips the table on makimas plan in part one. She wanted everyone to love csm and weaken him and now everyone is going to be scared shitless.
i also want to take a minute to appreciate how smart and creative the fire devil is???? the irony of the FLAMETHROWER guy using the FIRE devil. I really love that Fujimoto doesnt just make the flame devil have basic fire powers, he expands on what exactly makes fire scary. which is how fast it spreads! like are you kidding me how did this shit get to canada. I find it interesting that it’s through the chainsaw church too it’s like some cult crap spreading like a virus. Not to mention the unpredictability of fire which correlates into why people with contracts and take any form!!!!! SO COOOLLLL also the fact that it was diguised as the justice devil. Which I might talk about another time
Before the next chapter comes out i want to say smth abt the like god references? Its just the church and the past few chapters have seemed very off in that way. they have very breifly mentioned higher beings specifically to justify their actions. this was a long post and more serious but i am so excited to see where the story goes from here w so much potential and inspiration clearly seen in his work. It never fails to blow me away
It really comes down to what type of message he wants the story to end with.

While my brain is still think about csm i was reading some theories and suddenly took notice of this line
Which completely flew over my head when i was reading the final arc because of the absolute state i was in, but holy shit this is huge. Not only does it show us that there is a way a devil can linger on existence even after being eaten by chainsaw man, but it makes me think of some other thing too
I always found weird that there were two sword hybrids that not only fight in the same way but also trigger their transformation in the same way, but seing as chainsaw man ate the original sword devil maybe a kanata devil later came into existence because the concept of a sword was eventually reinvented and since the og devil was gone a new one came into existence?
I know longswords and katanas aren't the same thing, but seing as there isn't a salmon devil when the fish devil exists i feel like those would work in a siminar fashion, at the end of the day they're both swords and so only one devil of that existed. Before it got eaten.
Another thing i just now realized is that we never see anyone refer to Quanxi as the crossbow devil, or whip, flamethrower and spear as such, not even themselves. As the reader we know what those things are, but in universe people straight up don't know because those names were erased from existence.
Which then makes me think that out of the weapon gang Katana man and Reze may be the only exceptions to the whole "my devil/fear no longer exists or is remembered because chainsaw man ate them" since we see people refer to them as these things.
#and yeah ik we've been told multiple times that nuclear stuff is gone#but Reze's devil is the bomb not a NUCLEAR bomb devil you know#anyways this is very rambly so don't take what i say here as 100% serious#it's more of just a theory type thing#csm#chainsaw man#csm spoilers#hyena ramblings

another not so early analysis on Chainsaw Man Chapter 141
I was busy killing people with my mind okayy
The Chainsaw Man Curry Buns are a pretty interesting double edged metaphor. The primary being that Chainsaw Man is starting to lose stock as a person and protector in favor of elevating him toe this godly status. Half is 1/2th, There are two Chainsaw Men now, Only one of which is active now. The Fake one, Who is basically a half off knock off copy. Additionally Denji's life has been split in half as he's no longer able to become Chainsaw Man, Making him Half off aswell. Really cool stuff.
Its interesting that Denji has specifically chosen to wear a different shirt. His usual ones have a hole cut into them so that he can put the ripcord through it and easily turn into chainsaw man without any issue. But now that part of himself is physically blocked off. His muscle memory is to pull it when he sees a devil, So he's done this to stop himself from doing it out of reflex.
The choice to make these first pages entirely devoid of dialog is a neat touch which reflects denji's current attitude. He still has to go about life, The life he wants. But it still feels empty. There's nothing interesting going on that would even require dialog.
Denji's maturity is commendable but still very sad. He's willing to give up his own happiness for the good of others. He's still able to find some joy in it but he's not able to find happiness through fulfillment anymore. Also Fujimoto just drew Nayuta once and called it a day lmao.
So we've got; Flamethrower, Sword, Spear, Whip here. Which is interesting because they're the only ones here that we see. Meaning Quanxi, Reze, And Katana Man are all absent. It could mean they aren't apart of the church. It would make sense of Quanxi to have fucked off. Katana Man hates Denji so obviously he's never join the church. Reze is an interesting case. There are two possibilities. 1. Reze isn't in the church 2. Fujimoto is saving her for a big reveal in the coming chapters
We will absolutely be seeing Miri begin to act for himself in the coming chapters. His arc is pretty clearly being set up. >Only Weapon who isnt a total psycho or pawn >Wants to be friends with Denji and doesn't gaslight him like the others >Doesn't want to kill people for no reason >Doubting the church's doings. He's deep into indoctrination but he's still showing is true self. I hope he actually gets to survive this arc.
Gay people can't spell stereotype.
Barem is going to get kicked in the nuts so hard. It'll be so fucking funny. Just you watch. Everytime there's an absolutely insane evil guy for denji to fight he kicks them in the nuts. He only hasn't done it in awhile because the big bads of part 1's latter half were all women.
