Barem is a Mockery of Conservative Americans – Theory

1. Introduction

It is true that the relevancy of USA in Chainsaw Man's universe is growing stronger with the recent chapters and Yoru's involvement with the Gun Devil, but what if i told you this has been implemented way before the statue of liberty incident? In this post, i'll break down how i believe Barem Bridge to be important for the overall plot from now on and way before his first appearance.

2. Barem's Nationality

From the few interactions we've had of Barem and Denji, we've got a lot of information about the main plot but as well of Barem himself, one of the ideas has been introduced more subtly wich is the one that Barem is a foreigner.

It may seem obvious due to his full name — Barem Bridge — not being very japanese at all, but coming from a manga who's one of the main characters were named "Power" it doesn't seem like that names/nicknames doesn't have much to do with nationality. In chapter 142 he refers to Public Safety as Japan's Public Safety, implying that: 1. There are other Public Safety organizations; and 2. He's used to refering it as "Japan's" because he's not from there.

It's safe to assume that Barem wasn't born in Japan and maybe isn't a citizen or has recently moved in and that explains the habit and the odd name. It's also a good time to remember that not all Chainsaw Man characters are japanese, we've had Quanxi (who is chinese) and Reze (who's from the USSR) that are both Weapons and foreigners.

3. Flamethrower History

This is the boring part, but hopefully it'll be short. The first flamethrowers (real life) were developed by Germany early in the 20th century, targetting the French and British trench fighters during World War I. However, at the beginning of World War II Americans had came up with their own model and later got some alterations around 1944-1945, wich included the flamethrower tanks. Those models were used against Japan and, curiously, the flamethrower tanks were clearly used as inspiration for Barem's hybrid head.

Therefore, Barem's hybrid form was inspired by an american flamethrower model that was used against Japan during World War II. What is very peculiar about this is that, aparently, Pochita had eaten the WWII Devil and because of that, the war was erased from humanity's memory as stated by Makima herself (who has the power to access "repressed" memories).

4. USA in Chainsaw Man

There isn't much information about the United States of America in Chainsaw Man but it seems to, not only be relevant to the main plot but for the characters as well. It is constantly brought up by other characters, like when Miri Sugo said "America's the freaking worst!" in chapter 140 or how the Gun Devil was born after a conflict in that same country and became an extremely fearsome, worldly known Devil.

In chapter 177, Yoru, the War Devil revealed to have control (or partial control) of the Gun Devil and she summoned them at the statue of liberty.

This makes sense, giving it's the Gun Devil's birth place and, as the War Devil she has access to firearms, however, the Gun Devil we've got from the United States is VERY different from the one in Japan:

It is possible that they are different Devils, but is heavily implied that the one on the right (american one) is in fact the Gun Devil. Their appearances being different according to the location they're from could mean that we got two of them and/or Devils look different depending on where they come from.

There are Devils that are essencially the same thing but exist as different entities, example: Katana Devil and Long Sword Devil. The fact that Barem has a Flamethrower tank on his head that "coincidentally" was developed during WWII (important even in CSM) and by the americans makes it look suspicious.

5. Barem's Ideals and the US

Throrough his short, yet very welcome appearance, Barem introduced himself as a church leader who's extremely pro-violence, believing it's part of his own nature as a human, hybrid and a weapon and that "God" will forgive him. He justifies his need for violence as part of himself, similarly to how conservatives in America brutalize in the name of "God".

The practice of church leaders stimulating violence isn't exclusive to the US but it's very popular there, specially with big political figures using religious slogans to attract followers, similar to how Barem uses highschoolers who admire Chainsaw Man to join his cult and force contracts with the Fire Devil.

Barem is not a Chainsaw Man follower althought he does call himself a fan, he's a Makima follower and believes in her vision of an utopia, so he just uses other people's dreams of being like Chainsaw Man to his own goals, turning them into brainless zombies who go on ravages and turn the whole country into madness. It is also said that the Chainsaw Man Church isn't exclusive to Japan.

This brings us back to topic number 3: "Flamethrower History" in wich i stated that flamethrowers were used by the americans against the japanese in WWII. It's all too convenient to be a coincident and at this rate we might as well consider the possibilty of Death Devil's arrival being a new WWII.

6. Conclusion

Throrough this post we have concluded that Barem isn't japanese and that his hybrid transformation was directly inspired by Flamethrower Tanks, a technology invented by the USA and used against Japan during WWII and that his church leader facade is similar to how american politicians gather followers by using their beliefs and fears to manipulate them into committing acts of violence and brutalization, even if it goes against said religion.
