Between Glinda "It's not about aptitude, it's the way youre viewed" Upland and Fiyero "Nothing matters but knowing nothing matters" Tiggelar, Elphaba seems to really gravitate towards rich, shallow individuals who distract themselves with external validation and short lived revelry so they don't have to face the terrifying reality that they're not even content with their fake, empty, unfufilling lives and are starving for something that feels real. They only woke up when Elphaba gives them something to care about.

One aspect that was changed from the Wicked novel when it was adapted was the racism. As in, not a made up skin color (with, yes, historical parallels in our own world but no one has actual green skin in the real world), but literal racism as in against brown people. In the book, there are four axis of racial prejudice that are explored:

against Elphaba and her green skin => also kept in the musical, although toned down in some aspects 

against Fiyero and the tribes from the Vinkus in general, who have dark skin and live nomadic lifestyles set apart from the rest of Oz according to their tradition) => erased from the musical

against Munchkinlanders who are small => also kept in the musical with Boq’s narrative arc 

against Animals => also kept in the musical, though severely toned down

I’m not judging on the musical adaptation, it’s very very different from the book and shouldn’t really count as the same story. It’s just that the one form of racism explored in the novel that is the most relatable to our own world is the one against Fiyero and against Vinkus tribes and it’s the one that has been completely erased from the musical. 

Simple example: in the musical, Glinda/Fiyero is a thing, they get together and engaged and almost get married. In the book, there were only rumors that they ever had a thing, rumors that were disproved by Fiyero’s own point of view chapters, and also by Glinda later who, when Elphaba asked her if there had ever been any truth to the rumors of an affair between her and Fiyero, flat out retorted that Fiyero had brown skin, so to suggest that at all was to disparage her reputation.

I dunno, I know the two stories are extremely different and also, just because some themes are explored in the book does not necessarily mean that it’s done well and that it’s done in a way that gives readers of color a meaningful takeaway. It’s just really noticeable.

Not enough people talking about how off the shits Stephen Schwartz was to build As Long As You’re Mine out of the Wicked Witch theme. To take a series of notes that represent Elphaba’s rejection from society, which we first hear in No One Mourns The Wicked as a representation of her being different, scary, wicked, and turn it into the basis of the song that represents Fiyero’s love and desire for her??? Because he loves her as she is, for everything that makes her different—that makes her unique?? Because she doesn’t have to hold back with him in that moment and instead gives herself over to passion?? Insane, incredible.
