A-Z game debrief 6/25: Five Dates (2020)
youtube
Developed by: Good Gate Media, Wales Interactive Published by: Wales Interactive
"Five Dates is an interactive rom-com about the unpredictable world of digital dating. With five potential female matches, Vinny explores whether compatibility, chemistry and connection is still possible in a world where physical touch is no longer an option." Steam tags: FMV, Dating Sim, Choose Your Own Adventure, Choices Matter, Adventure, Interactive Fiction, Visual Novel, Point & Click, Simulation
Estimated time to 100% (according to hltb): 5.5hrs How long steam logged me playing to 100%: 5hrs How long I actually spent 100%ing (not just with the game running while I recorded stuff): 4.5hrs
# of achievements I started with: 0/15 # of achievements I ended with:
Rarest achievement (according to steam):
Toughest achievement: N/A, imo
Favorite thing about the game: Some pretty solid acting! Some scenes were a little forced, sure, but there were also some really nice genuine moments that played out. I really liked Shaina's and Paige's negging tbh, they had good chemistry with the lead guy. And a few great moments with Callum, too.
[all my blog posts about it]
Thoughts after the fact: I actually found the acting in this particular project a lot better than some I've seen from other Wales Interactive pieces. With the setting being the initial 2020 lockdown, it felt very down to earth and it made me curious if these actors were legitimately filming from their homes during lockdown. I was curious a lot about the filming, actually.
Also: I really liked Paige's "successful" ending still being a breakup, and I'm glad it was the last ending I unlocked. I also am really disappointed that Shaina's ending is the least common, cause I really liked her as a character. I may go back and play through some more of the options I didn't take.
The only part I didn't like, really, was Saffron's panic attack. Maybe because I've never experienced that kind of panic attack, because any attack I've had has come in direct response to a certain kind of trigger or pressure, and has been less "on/off" than she portrayed, it just felt kind of cringey and forced compared to, for instance, Paige's reaction to revealing her daughter. I still liked Saffron though, despite myself. For a fairly flat character, as written, the actress made a cute MPDG.
Honestly, I wish it was a longer game! I wish the dates were longer and we got even more background on both the girls and Vinny. Maya and Grace weren't that interesting to me, but I was surprised how much Paige grew on me after a horrible first few lines to really enjoying her second date, and Shaina's third date was really good as well.
Personal rating: 7/10 (short and sweet, with some solid chemistry between characters)
The F game poll results:
Next poll up is for G!

Sweden will choose a replacement for Gripen after 2030
Gripen E fighters will operate until 2060 and the current Gripen C/D fighters until 2040 or more.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/12/2023 - 12:46 in Military
After joining and then later leaving the UK-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS), the Swedish military is now postponing the decision on their way to a next-generation jet fighter until 2031, after being able to assess the "risks and possibilities" with different approaches, a Saab official said.
Three options are on the table for Stockholm: "build a system, develop a system with someone, or... acquire a system," said the official, speaking under the Chatham House Rules at the International Hunting Conference in Madrid. "It's an open question."
All the commitment of the Swedish Air Force today is in the implementation of the new Gripen E.
“We had bilateral and trilateral cooperation with Great Britain and also with Italy in the FCAS program,” said the official. “We abandoned this about a year ago and started some national studies... connecting what capabilities are needed for the future.” The official refused to comment on the reason why Sweden ended its collaboration with the United Kingdom and Italy.
So far, the authorities have not made a decision on an initial operational capacity date (IOC) for the jet they intend to choose as a next-generation fighter, but a wide range of planning activities will inform the 2031 acquisition decision.
Sweden was part of the Tempest program, now GCAP.
Indicating some level of control desired by Sweden over a next-generation schedule, the official said that Phase 1 will cover concept exploration between 2023 and 2025, with Phase 2 to address concept and technology development from 2026 to 2030. Operational analysis, system concepts and aircraft demonstrators are among the main lines of effort included in the two phases. Technological development activities will run from 2023 to 2030, while the planning of demonstrators will begin in 2026.
The disclosure of the long-term program planning comes after the Swedish defense materials agency (FMV) confirmed in September that it was prioritizing future fighter studies and "finding facts", while Saab also said it wants to be an "actor" in the program, which would ideally include a role as an integrator of "system systems".
Another sixth-generation combat aircraft program in Europe is the SCAF.
The French, German and Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, also known as SCAF, and the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP) led by Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, formerly also known as FCAS, have committed themselves to a systems approach system, where the development of a next-generation fighter will allow them to control aircraft, effers and auxiliary sensors in a way that previous fighter jets have not been able to.
GCAP is expected to be in service from 2035, with FCAS five years later.
"One thing that has not been decided in Sweden is the IOC for next-generation hunting, so this is a great challenge because we need to be agnostic. ... We cannot simply look at a level of technology and align this [development] with the time of the IOC," said the official. He added that the "risks" and "possibilities" must be considered so that an acquisition decision can be made, including the role that the Swedish government and industry would play in development.
Gripen C/D fighters will fly in Sweden at least until 2040.
"What happened is that we made the decision to fully enter a concept phase of the next generation system, which [the approval] happened the week after the middle of the summer of this year," explained the official. "So what we will do is deliver concepts, both in the system [a new fighter] and at the system system level. We need to do technological development and integration activities. We need to develop national competence both on the government side and on the industry side."
Sweden has time in its favor to deliberate on which way to go for a future acquisition of fighters, since Saab's Gripen E, the backbone of the Swedish Air Force, is expected to be operated by 2060. Older Gripen C/D aircraft are expected to be retired between 2035 and 2040, or more, because of the war in Ukraine, according to the official.
The new Gripen E are scheduled to fly in the Swedish Air Force until 2060.
But postponing until the end of the decade to make a firm commitment to acquire future fighters risks losing industrial influence on the design requirements of GCAP or FCAS, if Stockholm decides to join one or the other, although the employees of each program have often emphasized that they remain open to new partners.
On this front, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to express interest in joining the GCAP, although the United Kingdom has stated that “there is no definitive timetable associated with making a decision on Riyadh's potential involvement. Elsewhere, French President Emmanuel Macron announced in June that Belgium will enter the FCAS program.

Additional Reading: → Flora’s daily fan news thread → Next week’s post will be late as I’ll be in transit back to Canada. My regular posting of space notes and such will resume after that since I’ll have stable internet again. 🥳

GameSpot UK Adrian Smith - Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
Interview appeared on GameSpot UK website, dated to 19th July 1999
Prepare for a real revelation as GameSpot UK talks to Adrian Smith Operations Director at Core Design, as he gives us the inside story on Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation and what it's like Living With Lara.
GameSpot UK:
How far are you into Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation?
Adrian Smith:
Development started in the middle of 98 whilst work was in progress for Tomb Raider III.
GameSpot UK:
Drakan is looking great - will Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation look even better?
Adrian Smith:
Why of course it will!
GameSpot UK:
Drakan has multiplayer, what about Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation?
Adrian Smith:
I think Lara's more than enough for most people to handle! We've looked at the multiplayer approach, but nothing is planned for the foreseeable future.
GameSpot UK:
On which platforms will Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation be appearing?
Adrian Smith:
PlayStation and PC
GameSpot UK:
So what's the plot this time?
Adrian Smith:
We've made the basis of the story a lot simpler this time around - the player is given a very clear objective from the outset. The plot will twist and turn as Lara progresses, but the ultimate goal always remains in sight.
Very basically, Lara inadvertently releases something rather nasty whilst breaking into an ancient tomb... and of course she's the only one who can put things right. The path of true adventure never runs smooth so Lara will have various tasks to complete before she's able to face a final confrontation.
The story is set entirely in Egypt. Last Revelation is not about covering vast distances - it's a very continuous experience where the storyline unfolds throughout via seamless cuts and FMVs. These may be triggered at any time during gameplay, rather than just between specific locations. As you can imagine, the scope for locations, architecture, atmosphere, puzzles, enemies etc. is tremendous!
GameSpot UK:
Will Lucozade be appearing in the new game?
Adrian Smith:
No - we'll be using the traditional medi-packs.
GameSpot UK:
For the PC are you using the Tomb Raider III engine or building a new one?
Adrian Smith:
For the first time we are producing a dedicated PC version which is not constrained by what can or can't be done on the PSX. In essence the whole of the game engine for Last Revelation is new. In terms of format, the two versions of the game are the same, but there will be elements on the PC version that will make use of the hardware specific features (bumpmapping, etc. ). There will also be subtle differences between the two versions, with the PC maybe having some new features that are not available on the PSX version.
GameSpot UK:
Do you fear a press backlash against the new game as quite a few journalists hated the last one?
Adrian Smith:
I can't say that we were ever aware that the game was actually hated! Despite any number of new features and improvements, the game is still, in essence, 'Tomb Raider' - an adventure game featuring Lara Croft. What we have done this time is completely readdress a number of key elements. This will immediately distinguish Last Revelation from its predecessors and bring fresh life to the title. The on-screen format is completely new - gone are the old inventory rings, loading screens etc.
It's always been our intention to make the fourth game as accessible to as many people (both old fans and new users) as possible. We've focused on simpler gameplay so the game will be easier than TR III in terms of direction and objectives. Players will know exactly what to do, and where they have to do it. The difficulty lies in solving the puzzles that will enable players to complete objectives - so it's very much like the original game in that respect. A very clear storyline and single location means that a lot less time is wasted covering vast distances. The philosophy behind Last Revelation is much more akin to the original title in terms of its puzzle mechanics, ancient locations and atmosphere.
In some ways Last Revelation is a prequel to the trilogy, but the technical advances will make it far more detailed and atmospheric. If you've never played a Tomb Raider game, this is the one that we'll be recommending!
GameSpot UK:
Do you think that Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation will be as big as Tomb Raider III?
Adrian Smith:
In terms of size, the locations are much tighter and feature many smaller rooms that enable the player to really focus on the task in hand. Since this is a single adventure, we can't count number of levels etc. but the actual size of the whole game is no shorter than players have experienced in the past. In terms of sales - we're obviously hoping that this will be the best-selling title and as stated earlier, it will be the most accessible TR title yet.
GameSpot UK:
Why not ditch the Tomb Raider label and call the games "The Adventures Of Lara Croft"?
Adrian Smith:
Tomb Raider III was subtitled 'Adventures of Lara Croft' due to the fact that the game comprised five separate adventures. We're now focusing on a single, continuous experience, so 'Adventures' isn't applicable in this instance. We try to give each game a title that denotes the flavour of the adventure e.g. Dagger of Xian, Last Revelation. But if we produce further Tomb Raider titles, who knows!
GameSpot UK:
Can you tell us about any of the new enemies that Lara will face?
Adrian Smith:
We're concentrating on highly-detailed enemies - there may be fewer of these but they will certainly be more purposeful than those seen in previous titles. Since we're dealing with Egypt, our artists and animators have really been able to let their imaginations go, so we've got mythological baddies as well as natives and generics. Due to the nature of the plot, you'll find a lot of rather strange things happening and don't be surprised if you find that you're pitting your skill against an adversary throughout the adventure.
GameSpot UK:
When can we expect to see Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation and will there be a Tomb Raider V?
Adrian Smith:
November 1999 and well you know what they say... You just can't keep a good girl down...!

Hungary will modernize its Saab Gripen fighters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/12/2012 - 18:00 in Military, Saab
The Office of the Hungarian Government Commissioner responsible for defense development and the Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV) have successfully concluded negotiations to upgrade MS20 Block 2 capacity for the Hungarian Gripen fighter fleet, which Saab will carry out the job.
The MS20 Block 2 update brings several improvements. It greatly increases Gripen's combat and communication capabilities, as well as access to a wide range of weapons that can be integrated into the Gripen fighters of the Hungarian Air Force (HunAF). The sensor capacity is being enhanced by a radar upgrade to the PS-05/A Mk 4, which means that air-to-air target tracking range, as well as performance, increase significantly. This allows better ability to detect small air-to-air targets, better interference suppression and brings growth potential for additional developments in air-to-air and air-ground modes.
The MS20 Block 2 update for the HunAF Gripen fleet also improves communication capabilities, improving Link16 (NATO data link) functionality and voice communication updated to NATO's latest secure communication standard. The ability to identify coalition aircraft will also be improved with the introduction of NATO's latest Friend or Enemy Identification Mode 5.
This update will allow Hungary to choose from a wider selection of weapons to suit its Gripens: IRIS-T - infrared air-to-air missile within visual range (WVR), GBU-49 - modern laser-guided air-ground bomb and Meteor - an advanced radar-guided long-range missile (BVRAAM), which is superior to other missiles of its kind.
“Thanks to the modernization of the Hungarian Gripen aircraft, the operational capabilities of the Hungarian Air Force will be significantly increased. Our team appreciated close and fruitful cooperation with the Swedish side in this specific modernization project, as well as cooperation during the 15 years we operate Gripen aircraft," said Maj. Gen. Nandor Kilian, Hungarian Defense Forces Air Force inspector.
“During this 15-year period since the first Gripen landed at Kecskemet Air Base, it is clear that the Hungarian Air Force has taken the step to be one of the debut air forces in Europe and is a real contributor to NATO and European Union operations. With these changes introduced by the MS20 Block 2 update, Hungary will have an even more efficient and powerful aircraft, capable of competing in all aspects with any other next-generation combat aircraft," says Jonas Hjelm, head of Saab's aeronautical business area.
Hungary signed a contract in November 2001 to rent 14 Gripen fighters (12 JAS39A monoplaces and two JAS39B biplaces) from Sweden, for service with Hunting Squadron 1 "Puma", in the 59th Tactical Fighter Wing Wing in Kecskemét. The agreement was later changed to JAS 39C/D aircraft, and the first five arrived in Hungary in March 2006. The main mission of the "Puma" squadron is the air defense of Hungarian airspace. In 2014, the Hungarian Gripens also began defending Slovenian airspace and were responsible ?? for NATO's Baltic air policing deployment in Latvia in 2015 and 2019. In May/June 2015, two Gripens were lost in non-fatal accidents, but were replaced by more aircraft from Sweden.
Having examined the option to buy the aircraft in 2011, Hungary decided to extend the lease to 20 years in January 2012. In February 2017, the agreement was amended to increase the annual flight time permit from 1,600 to 2,000 hours. At the same time, the commitment to upgrade the aircraft to MS20 was also made. The latest update agreement signals Hungary's intention to extend its lease beyond the current end date in March 2026.
More than 150 million people in five countries on three continents rely on Gripen C/D fighters to protect their sovereign airspace and ensure their independence.

Lost Summer Archives - DJMAX Respect Review
by Nay Holland
Originally written: 01/26/18
Foreword: I was cleaning out my laptop and I came across an old review I wrote as a sample for an opportunity that sadly never took off. I wrote this review based off of the Asian version of the game as the NTSC version did not come out yet. A lot of content hadn’t come out yet, so expect a lot of things to be outdated here. Two years later and we now have both the NTSC PS4 and the Steam versions. Effing.... POP/STARS is in the Steam version! Time flies. Anyways, enjoy this for the first time seeing the light of day!
“Glory Days” are here again, indeed!
The year is 2009. I remember that hot Summer day, cashing in my final paycheck from my Summer job two weeks before senior year in high school, and immediately spending it on two things, a new PSP and DJMAX Fever. What fueled my purchase at the time, was that I wanted a game to play during my train rides to and from school and I’ve heard through word-of-mouth that this game would fulfill my button mashing needs. What kept me a fan for over eight years, was the music, the game play, and the overall love that the fans, developers, and composers have for the series.
Whether it was in the arcade with Technika, on a mobile device with Ray, or on the PC with Trilogy, the series proved a gateway to other rhythm games outside of DJMAX, yet I always found myself coming back to it. That was why the reveal of Respect was one of the main reasons for me to own a PS4, much like how I purchased that PSP with Fever eight summers ago. Since the release of Respect, it’s a purchase any fan of rhythm games, both new and old, will enjoy.
DJMAX, a franchise and a household name in the South Korean gaming industry since its humble beginnings as a PC game in 2004, had long since staked its claim as a driving force for rhythm games worldwide. For several years it had filled a void in the rhythm game scene with its Portable series.
The vibrant colors, intricate FMVs which played in the background, flashing effects, the various genres of music, and overall presentation featuring the eccentric announcer JC gave players an arcade experience at the palm of their hands, easily attracting newcomers to the game. The game play, being easy-to-learn yet sometimes unforgiving-to-master, serves as an addiction to keep playing. At some point, every single player of DJMAX have heard these taunting words echoed through their headphones any time you reach a Game Over.
YOU NEED MORE PRACTICE, NEVER GIVE IT UP!
Yet, far from discouraging, those words only fuel your resolve to keep playing, and playing, and playing, more and more, until you finally cleared that song that you have been stuck on for an hour. You come for the pleasing aesthetics and awesome music, but stay for the near masochistic game play until you conquer that roadblock and amp up the challenge, pushing yourself, and your blistering thumbs, to the limit.
Neowiz, formerly Pentavision, in this regard have giving fans both veterans to the frantic high-octane five-hundred notes per minute action, and beginners clearing charts at a reasonable crawl, enough content to last for years, if not potentially decades.
This was what Neowiz aimed for, with the release of DJMAX Respect in the Summer of 2017, a compilation of songs ranging from DJMAX Portable 1, Portable 2, and an entire soundtrack of new songs specifically made for Respect. The intent for Respect, however, is not meant to be just a “last hurrah” for the legendary franchise, but also as the title suggests, a Respect to the series and its fans.
Boasting the largest song list of any DJMAX game to date right out of the box with well over a hundred songs, Neowiz adds on to the already robust soundtrack with DLC ranging from their second PC game, Trilogy, to the “Metro Project” Portable games, including Clazziquai and Black Square, and their arcade flagship series, Technika.
At the time of this writing, the Trilogy and Clazziquai Edition DLC are available for purchase. Aside from their entire catalogue from their respect games, the DLC also added UI tweaks. This included entire overhaul to the user interface to reflect the games of the past. With every pack there is also a new song or two, exclusive to Respect, further empathizing Neowiz’s vision of respecting the legacy that they created, while also embracing the new.
The game play for DJMAX Respect follows the “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” formula as it does little to deviate away from its core game play. There are four modes, 4B[utton], 5B, 6B, and 8B. 4B utilizes the left and up buttons on the d-pad as well as triangle and circle buttons, 5B adds the option of using the right d-pad or the square button, 6B makes it a necessity to use both of those buttons, while 8B adds the shoulder buttons to the game play.
Certain quirks affected game play for the Portable series are fixed for Respect, with the addition of utilizing the two trigger buttons. For example, 8B in the PSP version utilized the L and R buttons, which are also the same buttons used to change the scroll speed in game. The only way to change the speed in 8B was to pause the game and do it from there. Since the trigger buttons are mapped to speed up and speed down, this means you can change your speed in all modes, including 8B, during game play.
Another quirk that was addressed was the utilization of the analog stick for certain charts that needed it. Now, instead of using the singular analog nub, you utilize both analog sticks for the PS4 controller, although this could be fine-tuned some more as there is no strategy in any of the analog notes. I’ve found myself simply holding the stick in any direction I pleased, rather than twirling the analog stick as it was a necessity in the Portable games.
Lastly, sticking to the “tried but true” formula, you must play through the game to unlock content, including songs, note skins, gear skins, and other elements. A personal problem I had with this, is that some of the unlocks you won’t see for a long time as you’d have to grind to unlock said songs through “achievements.”
There are milestones that you must complete within the game, ranging from how many songs of a specific difficulty you play, how many missions you cleared in Mission mode, and even how many times you missed a note. There are 24 different achievement categories in the game, each ranging from as little as five tiers for the more “challenging” tiers, to the average of ten tiers. After each tier cleared within a specific achievement, you unlock whatever is underneath that tier, then you move on to the next.
If there’s a specific song you are aiming for, you often find yourself grinding songs just enough time to unlock the song you want to play in Free Mode, otherwise the only chance you can get to play these songs are whenever they appear in Arcade Mode.
Thankfully the DLC packs all come with the songs readily available in both Arcade and Free mode so there isn’t any grinding, but, DJMAX has always been a series about grinding for content. You get the most out of your money this way as you won’t be able to unlock everything within the first couple of hours, but it is a game meant to be played in bursts, much like, again, how the original Portable games were.
At the current moment this game is only available to the Asian, Japanese, and the Korean market. All versions of the game are in English, making it highly import friendly. The great news is that there is a US release on the horizon as it was revealed during PSX 2017, so expect that release sometime during early 2018.
Regardless what region you pick this game up for, I highly recommend this game to anyone. It’s a grind fest, it’s brutal for the first time playing, and a PS4 controller isn’t a PSP so one would have to get use to the aerodynamics of the PS4 controller. With so much game play and content meant to last literally years, it’s a worthy investment and a proper sendoff to a franchise near and dear to me.

Every Voltage MC Is Special BC I Say So - BUM
Note: I am not a master on every characters’ routes and trivia. I made these up because I’m tired of boring MCs with no unique traits.
Also BUM stands for Butler Until Midnight ya nasties
Yuma’s MC: She has a problem - she’s obsessed with bad movies. The worse it is, the more she loves it. Not bad as in, like, bigoted or grossly sexual/violent, but bad as in like. Shitty B-movies and bad kids’ direct to DVD films. Think old FMV cutscenes in video games. Yuma is appalled and confused. The acting is so bad, the practical effects are almost non-existent, and yet somehow it’s...super fun to make fun of it! She’s right! They mock and laugh at countless movies together on stay-at-home dates.
Aoi’s MC: A natural comedian, she’s funny without even trying. His well-trained composure makes him try to resist laughing or cracking up whenever she does something hilarious, but he does admit that she has a knack for lightening the mood wherever she goes. It might be considered a bad thing in fancy high society, but whenever she’s just going about her regular life it’s a big help.
Tomoki’s MC: Surprisingly, she knows how to ride a horse. When she lived more in the countryside, she had a neighbor who taught horse riding lessons, and while she never owned a horse of her own she bonded with all of the neighbor’s horses. Since horse riding and racing are considered high-society fare, Tomoki is actually a little impressed. Until, that is, he realizes she rides like a country girl and got a lady (side saddle). He has to completely re-educate her on it, and she argues that side saddle is outdated and unsafe, so the compromise: she doesn’t have to side-saddle, but has to sit “properly” and keep an air of sophistication.
Kyo’s MC: When she was in college, she took a job as a bartender to keep up with expenses, even though her dad was secretly trying to support her. Now she can mix a variety of complicated drinks, often accidentally slipping back into this and doing it instead of the butlers, getting herself in trouble. Kyo isn’t sure how to react to his master suddenly taking over with a shout of “I can make any drink you can name!” and offering to mix him a “Five o’ clock Somewhere Special”. If nothing else, he finds it amusing and something he can learn from if he ever has to make a drink for a guest.
Itsuki’s MC: She has a hobby that is actually pretty profitable - making prop weapons for costumes and cosplay. It started when she had to do it for a school play and eventually she started to do it just for fun. She doesn’t do cosplay herself, so she has no need for them, and started selling them online just to get them out of her room. People were impressed and paid her a lot more than she expected! She has a real job now, but she still does it for fun every now and again. Itsuki finds it pretty interesting, and likes to watch her sculpt weird anime swords out of foam and cardboard.
