I had this idea literally yesterday, so I don't even have an outline. This was loosely inspired by the book Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant and Rot Away With Me by sweetlikesugar on Ao3.

cws: blood, gore, body horror, cannibalism (kind of?), being eaten alive, dead dove: do not eat

It's fisherman Eddie and merman Steve. They meet in secret every dusk as Eddie finishes his day. Steve starts bringing him gifts, sings to him, basically serenades Eddie into accepting a courting offer.

He takes the blue shimmering scale, one of Steve's own, in his hands. It's beautiful. It's everything. He tells Steve he'll spend day and night hunting for a house boat or seaside home so they can be together.

Steve only wants a kiss, an easy wish to grant. Eddie's longed for one since they first met. Instead Steve leans to bite Eddie's neck, infecting him with a poison that leaves Eddie immovable and hazy.

Steve worships his mate's body with sharp teeth and strong claws, ripping his way through the flesh and sinew of his lover's legs. The snap of bones cracking rings out in the night and Steve sucks the marrow from them like a delicacy. Eddie's screams die into soft whimpers and groans as his blood soaks the deck of Wayne's boat.

He's phasing in and out, and wakes to the sound of a splash. Maybe Steve's finally left him. His boat will drift out to ocean, he'll die bleeding out on the deck. But the rigging shakes, and Steve's next to him again asking if Eddie likes his courting gift. If the choice suits him.

A freshly mauled shark tailfin lays beside him, bite marks marring where the front half should be. And as Steve forces the fin over Eddie's pelvic bones, he finally understands what Steve meant when he said they'd be together forever.

Something something Eddie didn't discover Steve, Steve was stalking him. Something something Wayne tells old fishtales warning of creatures from the deep. There's an idea in there somewhere!
