Underrated HMC moments I've never seen anyone talking about part 1
Martha canonically teaching Sophie to swear
Fanny getting girls to talk about their fate not only after the funeral, but RIGHT after it. They didn't even got to change their clothes
Fanny and ms. Fairfax being old school friends, just as Fanny is the only one calling Fairfax by her first name.
Justin cannonically visiting Market Chipping shortly after Ben was taken by the Witch, being "in disguise"
Michael saying he always wanted a dog!
Howl going up and down the stairs while working with important stuff to look out of the window of his room. Sophie suggested that he's doing something very sinister, but he probably just wanted to see his nephews playing something like hide-and-seek in the yard.
Howls books being described as "queer-looking" (lol), suggesting he sneaks his library from Wales
Howl joking with ms. Pentstemmon's servants and overall acting completely relaxed in her presence
Sophie laying both of her hands on the stick, trying to mimic ms. Pentstemmon's behavoiur in order to feel more confident (it didn't work)
Sophie wishing to HIT KING'S HEAD with said stick instead of kissing his hand after she failed to blacken Howl's name
ms. Pentstemmon being the only person in Ingary who calls both Howell Jenkins and Benjamin Sullivan by their legal names
Bonus: Howl arranging old hat shop's house the way it would resemble his old mentor's chessboard-like floor pattern.
Howl violently waving his hand both to Michael and then Sophie while trying to act as gracefully as possible.
Howl's clothes having a whole winx-like animation, with blurring and merging into sparkles when changing from his suits to his jersey
Michael absolutely HATING jeans and being physically unable to walk with them on
Sophie thinking than no one's on the streets of Wales because of the rain. On the streets of WALES. Because of the RAIN.
Howl having his own set of keys from Megan's house
Megan knowing how to knit
Sophie being absolutely amazed by amount of carpets in Meg's house, probably because in medieval-like Ingary good carpets were pretty expensive
Neil and his friends swearing with the words "Sophie thought even Martha didn't know"
Michael and Sophie thinking that Howl wanted to kill his nephew by plugging his video-game off
HOWL MAKING A WHOLE GAME BASED ON HIS OWN MOVING CASTLE
Meg shouting that Mari shouldn't seat on the wet swing
Gareth (Megan's husband) playing baseball with Neil
Howl swearing he hasn't preformed a single spell in his life "with his hand on his heart". What heart.
Alternatively: ms. Angorian saying she "feels in her heart" that Ben is alive. whAT HEART, WITCH OF THE WASTE'S???
ms. Angorian getting all her actor skills to act confused as If she sees Ingary for a fist time. "Oh, what a strange-looking town!" "Oh, what a strange-looking people!"
Ben loving his guitar so much he apparenly took it with him on his mission on the Wastes
(this guitar being the only thing we know Ben took from Wales)
Percival being given the said giutar as a baby being given a rattle
Percival processing to play the said guitar for about three hours trying "to teach himself how to play" and adjusting it immideatly
Sophie swearing for about a page straight after meeting the king.

5th birthday cake request was Anastasia and bats. Not the cartoon bat in the movie, but you know bats.
They were also a big fan of DS9. You can't see it here, but they have a huge smile. Even though Garak looked like Dukat in Garak's clothes. We didn't really stick with Voyager, but they did like Seven.
Cheating a bit, this is from the 4th Christmas. Garak and Odo having a dance.
It's hard to see, but on the carousel are the Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog. Another favorite show.
Maybe not a vacuum theme, but still pretty fun.
#yes the carousel turned#the little bump thing on the dance floor of the Fisher Price castle fits the indent in the foot of action figures perfectly.#check out the mystic knights#they're a lot of fun and there's a cool dragon#kids#family#star trek

Most Common Problems Faced by My Childhood Dolls (Grouped by Type of Doll)
Baby/Companion Dolls: life-threatening diseases; bullying by other dolls at school; my dubious discipline style; my divorce from my imaginary husband Jake.
Groovy Girls: bullying by other Groovy Girls; life-altering gymnastics accidents; feet too unwieldy for go-go boots.
Barbies: false witchcraft accusations; real witches; tuberculosis; kidnapping; the time Ken and his brother Adam started a polygamous cult; bullying by other Barbies (whether in a normal high school or a beauty pageant or a cult); basically anything bad that happened to female movie stars in Hollywood under the studio system; the challenges of raising a million Chrissies and Kellies and Stacies and Skippers and similarly sized off-brand child dolls with little help from Ken or Adam; sibling rivalry (including an East of Eden-style mess between Ken and Adam).
Dollhouse Families: my friend Emily C. (I was Emily S.) stealing the mom doll from my old Fisher-Price family, leaving John (the dad) a widower, so when I got a new family a few years later, I decided that John should marry Patricia, the mom of the new family, which made it necessary for me to interpret Robbie (almost certainly meant to be a dad doll) as Patricia's teenage son, which was obviously very emotionally confusing for Robbie and exacerbated the usual tensions of a newly blended family.
Clothespin Dolls: Nancy, Alice, and Lily, the three charming clothespin dolls made by my genuinely talented great-aunt Beth in the 1960s or 1970s, were grown-up sisters who had a complicated dynamic (both Nancy and Lily had serious psychological and/or substance abuse issues, so Alice had to take care of them and Nancy's children and her own children) and also experienced nineteenth-century-literature-style problems, like diphtheria and ice-skating accidents and bear attacks. The clothespin dolls that I created myself as a tween/young teen were not as well-made, but their problems were generally limited to normal high school bullshit (not even the kind where you get poisoned or kidnapped!).
Miscellaneous Medium-Sized Figurines (mostly fast food toys of Disney characters and mini-Barbies): various passive-aggressive rivalries between groups (mini-Barbies vs. movie/TV characters, Disney vs. non-Disney, movie vs. TV, protagonist vs. non-protagonist, etc.); a lack of eligible bachelors (leading to unwise marriages, such as Belle from Beauty and the Beast marrying a temperamental Space Jam monster); ennui.
Playmobils: the Playmobils had a nearly utopian society, relatively free from poverty and class snobbery, and generally this diverse group of Union soldiers, stuffy Victorians, pirates, outlaws, royalty, horse girls, milkmaids, and fairies were able to work out their differences peacefully. However, all that progressive modernity had a dark side, most clearly illustrated by the Kafkaesque ordeal of Oliver, a boy who was imprisoned for no discernable reason by an evil psychiatrist and his social worker girlfriend despite the desperate efforts of his mother to free him. Intense wartime romances and infectious disease outbreaks were also common themes.
Fisher-Price Great Adventure Action Figures: these rather hideous but very fun toys (consisting of an anachronistic mix of knights, pirates, cowboys, and Robin Hood's Merry Men) belonged to my seven-years-younger brother, so we would play with them a lot while I was looking after him. Naturally there was a lot of military conflict and criminal activity built into our play (will Robin Hood and his friends be able to steal the treasure from the castle? Will the golden knights or the black knights win the big battle? Who will stop the stagecoach robberies?), but, to entertain myself, I would introduce storylines such as "the Golden Sword Knight is tired of being bullied by the other knights, so he runs away and goes to live in the forest with Robin Hood's gang, where he falls in love with a female outlaw" and "Little John starts a AC/DC-style rock band with two of the black knights and everyone hates it."
Fisher-Price Little People: easily the most provincial of the doll groups, the Fisher-Price Little People struggled with extreme class/wealth inequality, widespread adultery, child abuse, teen homelessness, practically non-existent resources for the disabled, sexual repression, a character known only as "The Pervert," and a killer clown. Every day they went to school and work, and every night they tried to find someone to hook up with and maybe got kidnapped. I only wish my brother and I had been in possession of the motel playset. Think of all the extramarital affairs and drug deals that could have happened there!
Polly Pockets: the Polly Pocket community was dominated by two wealthy factions, a nouveau riche pair of brothers with a beach party house and the royal family. Due to a severe job and housing shortage, plus the local men's habit of not acknowledging their natural children, ordinary Polly Pockets had to struggle and scrape. Compared with the Barbies, there was a lot of solidarity among women (and also Josh, the one working-class boy Polly Pocket). Many of the Polly Pockets were very fragile, including the alcoholic Cowgirl Becky and the agoraphobic piano player Penny.
Paper Dolls: intense status jockeying over who had the most/best clothes, mainly. They also fought about friendships and (if there were any of them) boys, but it ultimately came down to clothes.
#dolls#little john's signature song was called 'ride to hell'#'we're going along on a ride to hell/why don't you come along and feel the trail'#it was not good and everyone was so mad at him

Beginning to share some highlights from my sketchbooks over the past few months as I work on bigger and more colorful things! I make doodles like this nearly every day, and also draw some real life scenarios, treating it like a journal. Most of it I never color and polish up for posting.
1. Had to do a quick Mufasa in honor of James Earl Jones.
2. The adorable pink dragon from the Fisher Price Play Family Castle.
3. Lumiere and Cogsworth scenario.
4. James Dean has a boo-boo.
5. Beach Boys parody.

This weekend (Friday, March 24th to Sunday, March 26th, 2023) at the Carolina Theatre of Durham, it’s RetroGothic!
WHAT IS THE RETROGOTHIC FILM SERIES?
Gothic horror movies are adult fairy tales. Young women appear at ancestral castles and fall in love with the dark, brooding masters of the estate. Or flee in terror while wearing flowing dresses. One window is always lit by candlelight against stormy midnight skies. There is murder, confinement, revenge, and ancient curses. Dark secrets pile up at alarming rates. The blood of resilient gothic heroes and heroines is ignited while saving their souls from Satan, or Vincent Price.
The heyday of the gothic horror pictures spanned the 1950s through the 1970s, with Hammer Film Productions and American International Pictures’ gloriously gothic takes on classic monster stories that starred Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and other British stars of the day. Even Edgar Allen Poe gets involved. In short, RetroGothic is the counterpart to our beloved Splatterflix Film Series, but this one is for those who prefer their horror movies to involve polite vampires in velvet capes.
Featuring:
Mario Bava's Black Sunday: Uncut Version (1960)
Jacques Tourneur's Curse of the Demon (1957)
Terence Fisher's The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
Freddie Frances' Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1969)
Roger Corman's The Fall of the House of Usher (1960)
Terence Fisher's Horror of Dracula (1958)
John Gilling's The Plague of the Zombies (1966)
Val Guest's The Quatermass Xperiment, aka The Creeping Unknown (1955)
Douglas Hickox's Theater of Blood (1973)
Movie tickets are $10.00 each, or you can get a 10-pack for $80. Check here for schedule.
“Along with the City of Durham, we have made major investments in the Carolina Theatre for the comfort and safety of our guests during our closure,” says Randy McKay, the Carolina Theatre’s President & CEO. “That includes tens of thousands of dollars in new state of the art HVAC upgrades from Global Plasma Solutions (GPS) that remove biohazards, pollen, and other contaminants to make our air as pure — and sometimes purer — than outdoor air.” The theater has also earned a Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC) STAR™ accreditation for its cleaning practices to ensure that guests have a safe and enjoyable experience. “Together, these cleaning practices and advanced air filtration make the Carolina Theatre one of the safest spaces to attend a film or live event in the region,” says McKay. Review of the 1st Imaginary Symphony for Nomad, Flagpole, 15 September 1999.
[source]
transcript:
THE MUSIC TAPES 1st imaginary Symphony For Nomad Merge
Imagine early Sebadoh tracks being played by a six-year-old peaking on acid on primarily Fisher-Price instruments, and you might be on the way to envisioning the sound of the Music Tapes, a side project of Neutral Milk Hotel's Julian Koster. Blending childish fancy and fantasy with technically deft lo-fi production, 1st Symphony For Nomad is an odd-yssey, following Nomad, the creation of an inventor, as he develops in a Lewis Carrollesque realm.
Included with the CD is a comic-strip insert as a visual aid that the listener can follow as the album progresses; strangely enough, the album makes more sense with it.
This album leapfrogs from mood to mood, almost languidly, never rushing itself. A track like “Song Of 100 Castles” keeps it simple, consisting of only Koster’s childlike vocals, while the next track, “What the Single Made the Needle Sing,” jumps into full pop orchestra mode, with the same sort of hallucinogenic horn-based melodies that make Neutral Milk Hotel's sound so textured. It's also scary that “Song for the Death of Parents” is as catchy as it is, with its thrashy, sing-a-long feel.
Koster’s instrumental choices make the whole mix come to life, edging away, in most cases, from the traditional guitar/bass/drums setup, opting instead for accordions, eerie horns and toy piano. The whole effort is bolstered by the helping hands of Eric Harris, Andy Sailboat, J. Nigh Magnum, and Robert Carter, among other Elephant 6 players.
A note of caution: this album is exceedingly strange, and those not familiar with the cadre of Elephant 6 bands in town may want to opt for something less bizarre for a first taste. However, those who are used to these flavors of fairy tale narrative found in the music of Elf Power and Neutral Milk Hotel will find new dimensions to appreciate here. 100% Kingdom Hearts 1 (Day 8)
Current Target: Proud Player
I awoke in darkness once again. In game this time. I chose shield and gave up magic once again. I also chose all of the answers that allowed me to leave for my journey at dawn which gave me maximum XP gain. One thing I noticed about Proud Mode off the bat is that Sora appears to be incredibly fragile. Like a strong wind would blow him over.
The heartless in the beginning gave him a gentle back scratch and I thought he was going to disintegrate. Sadly I don’t get to juice up like on Fisher Price difficulty. I didn’t die to the beginning heartless, however. That would’ve been truly tragic. No, I saved death for later. Instead I blazed through the opening as fast as I could while keeping up with cutscenes.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say the opening of this game does pique my interest still to this day. It gives the idea of something more grandiose on the horizon. Something bigger than me that’s happening. But before we know it we’re waking up on Destiny Island and being called a layabout by Kairi, a character that seems to do next to nothing for the entire series. She wants to see other worlds along with Sora and Sora’s hetero life mate Riku.
You’re also on an island with Wakka and Tidus from Final Fantasy 10 and Selphie from Final Fantasy 8. Something I strangely realized is how these three don’t have the same clown shoes our three main characters have. Also, the amount of sand on that beach means those shoes have to be uncomfortable.
Another thing I noticed while watching the cutscenes is how decent the game still looks. Sure it’s been uprezed and smoothed out for the remaster, but even watching old PS2 footage, the game has a charm about it that feels timeless. At any rate, the scamps talk about Kairi showing up one day and making them want to leave their home which I’d forgotten about. Then Riku throws fruit at Sora and talks about it being a destiny snack that he wanted to feed Kairi in order to...I dunno, date? Sora, please, consider getting a personality. That’s better than any cantaloupe.
Now we’re hurled at breakneck speed without warning into the magical Disney castle where Donald Duck goes to greet King Mickey only to find that his majesty fucked off and left a note with his dog. Donald goes to tell Goofy, clearly the most reliable person he could find to tell him about this letter. Unfortunately Minnie and Daisy overhear things and there’s an awkward moment.
Speaking of awkward moments, while hunting for Mushrooms, Sora runs into a creeper in a cave while he’s scribbling his fantasies onto a rock. He starts talking about worlds being connected and doors and has a really rad voice. He’s super cryptic about things and definitely in no way shape or form our primary antagonist for this game.
We finish getting shit for our raft after racing Riku to name the boat, which I happily named “Porkchop” after everyone’s favored cartoon dog. Kairi talks about charms that she’s making and also tries to get Sora to leave Riku behind. I also legitimately forgot that Sora had parents in this one. Or at the very least, guardians. I forgot someone had called him down for dinner but of course he’s gone because Destiny Island is getting it’s shit rocked by Heartless.
Also Donald and Goofy are trying to find someone called a keymaster as well as some dude named Leon. Sora gets a key then goes to a door and ends up in Traverse Town. All in all, the story so far is fairly basic but despite the campiness of these two vastly different art styles existing on the same disk, it’s still a fairly interesting start that I didn’t remember. So far, Proud Mode is also offering a bit more of a challenge, though it’s feeling a little skewed towards “difficult for difficulties sake” but it could be me.
At any rate, the exhaustion from all this attention needing to be paid has left me in a fatigue so now it’s time to rot my brain with pornography and sugary drinks.
