The Crucial Roles and Responsibilities in the Fish Market Ecosystem
The bustling world of the fish market Dorchester, MA is a complex and interconnected ecosystem, where various players work together to bring the ocean's bounty to consumers worldwide. From fishermen to wholesalers to retailers, each entity in the fish market holds distinct roles and responsibilities that contribute to the overall functioning of this vital industry.
In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at the essential roles and responsibilities within the fish market ecosystem, shedding light on the intricate network that ensures the availability of fresh seafood to households and businesses.
Fishermen: Harvesting the Ocean's Bounty
At the heart of the fish market ecosystem are the fishermen who brave the waters to harvest the ocean's bounty. Their primary responsibility is to catch a variety of fish and other seafood, using their expertise and knowledge of fishing grounds to sustainably procure the freshest catch.
Fishermen play a pivotal role in supplying the initial inventory to the fish market and are essential contributors to the seafood supply chain.
Tumblr media
Fish Auctions and Wholesalers: Streamlining Distribution
After the catch is brought ashore, fish auctions and wholesalers step in to streamline the distribution process. Their roles involve purchasing fish directly from fishermen and then facilitating the sale to retailers and fishmongers.
These entities are responsible for efficiently handling, storing, and transporting the seafood to ensure its freshness is preserved during transit, thus playing a crucial role in connecting the catch with the wider market.
Retailers and Fishmongers: Bringing Seafood to Consumers
Retailers and fishmongers serve as the final link in the fish market Dorchester, MA ecosystem, bridging the gap between the seafood supply chain and consumers. Their responsibilities include procuring fresh fish and seafood from wholesalers and effectively presenting and selling the products to the general public.
They are also tasked with maintaining the quality of the seafood and ensuring that customers have access to a diverse selection of fresh, high-quality fish.
Regulatory Bodies: Ensuring Standards and Compliance
Regulatory bodies play a critical role in the fish market ecosystem by establishing and enforcing standards and regulations to ensure the sustainability, safety, and quality of seafood products. They are responsible for overseeing fishing practices, setting catch limits, monitoring environmental impact, and implementing measures to prevent overfishing.
Regulatory bodies also work to enforce food safety standards, thus safeguarding consumers and the fish market industry as a whole.
Processing and Packaging Facilities: Adding Value to Seafood Products
Processing and packaging facilities contribute to the fish market ecosystem by adding value to seafood products. Their responsibilities include cleaning, filleting, and packaging the catch to meet consumer preferences and industry standards.
Additionally, these facilities play a crucial role in extending the shelf life of seafood through various preservation methods, ensuring that the products reach consumers in optimal condition.
Transportation and Logistics: Enabling Worldwide Distribution
The efficient transportation and logistics network are essential components of the fish market ecosystem, responsible for enabling the worldwide distribution of seafood products.
From refrigerated trucks to air freight, these entities play a crucial role in ensuring that fresh seafood reaches distant markets and consumers, contributing to the global availability of diverse seafood options.
Consumers: Driving Demand and Sustainability
Last but not least, consumers form an integral part of the fish market ecosystem, driving demand for sustainable seafood and influencing industry practices. Their choices and preferences have the power to shape the market by promoting sustainable fishing practices, responsible sourcing, and supporting local and ethical suppliers.
Consumers hold the responsibility of making informed purchasing decisions that contribute to the health and sustainability of the fish market ecosystem.
Conclusion: Sustaining the Fish Market Ecosystem
In conclusion, the fish market Dorchester, MA ecosystem is a complex web of interconnected roles and responsibilities, where each participant plays a critical part in ensuring the availability of fresh, sustainable seafood.
From fishermen to retailers to regulatory bodies, every entity carries out distinct duties that collectively sustain the industry. Understanding and appreciating the contributions of each participant is crucial in promoting the responsible and sustainable growth of the fish market ecosystem, thus ensuring its longevity for future generations to enjoy.

Good ideas! I've got some more:
Dim Sum in Chinatown is sublime. Winsor (sic) is superior to any of the larger places IMO.
Take a ferry to one of the harbor islands and walk around an old fort! Most of the islands have some sort of park or historical situation going on. The ferries come/go every few hours so you won't be stuck there for too long. Great opportunity for a picnic in the evening or a hot thermos walk in the winter!
The Arnold Arboretum down past Jamaica Plain is an amazing huge (free) place to walk around if plants are your thing. It's even surprisingly fun in the winter when most things aren't leafed out.
The Aquarium is pretty cool once or twice (this is my go-to for out-of-town friends visiting), but even if you don't want to pay for a ticket, grabbing a coffee and hanging out with the seals for free by the outdoor seal tank is pretty relaxing.
Similar to the When Pigs Fly bread deal, some of the branches of Flour bakery often have $3 huge bags of "bread ends", which are really just full-size slices of their excellent rustic sandwich loaf. The MIT branch regularly has them before noon, I'm less sure about other branches.
The best greasy spoon breakfast diner is actually in the North End (Friendly Toast fans, you have been led astray) at Theo's. Have the orange hot sauce on whatever you get; it's not that hot and is amazing. Zoe's by Harvard is also pretty good, but a very different/larger vibe.
Newbury Street is generally pretty over-touristed and over-priced, but Trident (bookshop + cafe) and Dirty Water Dough Company (New York style pizza place) are good.
In non-winter months, wander down the community gardens in the Emerald Necklace starting by Kenmore.
The Dominican food by Stony Brook station is amazing. For ultra-unctuous red beans and rice, I highly recommend La Parada, but there are a bunch of great spots in that area.
Haymarket "Farmer's" (really supermarket rejects) market on Friday and Saturday is awesome! You can buy like a week's worth of fruit and veggies for two people for <$10, no kidding. The indoor permanent Haymarket market is also nice for street eats, but expensive.
Like long bike rides? Take the Minuteman bike trail up north from Alewife station (it connects with the regular Somerville/Cambridge bike corridor now, too, which goes all the way to the river by Lechmere). You can ride to Lexington/Concord/Bedford for a smaller town feel. In the summer get ice cream at the far end at Bedford Farms Ice Cream.
Vietnamese food in Dorchester is amazing. Get Pho or a whole fried fish somewhere. My favorite is Pho 2000.
While you're down that way, see if you can wrangle a bus (or car if you have one) to Kam Man in Quincy; it's a massive Chinese supermarket with really affordable and often hard-to-find stuff.
The Q Ballroom up by Alewife has swing dances every Friday night. Tickets are usually <$20, and that buys you an hour of absolute-beginners lesson up front and then several hours of amazing (usually live) music and dancing.
hi! i just moved to the boston area—i was wondering if you had any basic recommendations for things to do or places to eat that you’re willing to share!
Welcome! Some of my top recs include:
Any museum in the city! I may be biased in this, but we've got art museums, historical house museums, a museum of science and an aquarium...go nuts. Many have free or discounted admission days too, so keep an eye out for that. But if you see me at work when you visit, no you didn't.
Join a library or library network. For books, of course, but also for museum passes and other services
Speaking of libraries, the Boston Public Library is STUNNING. And they have a tea room where you can go and have high tea. It's pricey, but as a special treat, highly recommend
Dunkin has the cheapest Little Cafe DrinksTM in the city. Tatte (TAH-tay, local chain) has the best, in my opinion. Plus their London Fog is only $3.50, so that's nice!
"Locals don't go to Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market" is a filthy lie. QM is like a big indoor food court, perfect for feeding groups with different tastes. Plus...they have a macaroni and cheese stall. Heaven, IMO.
You do not have to take a stand in the Mike's vs. Modern "best North End Italian bakery" debate. Free yourself. Hipsters prefer Bova's anyway.
(But do go to some Italian restaurants in the North End. They're all pretty much excellent)
Do not go to Salem in October. It's insanely crowded.
Do go to Salem any other time of year. It's insanely fun.
Mount Auburn cemetery is gorgeous and garden cemeteries were built to be enjoyed by the living. Take advantage!
Like antiquing? Check out the four-story Cambridge Antique Market right next to Lechmere station. Fun Antiques in Cambridge is good for all your lamp repair needs. The antique stores on Charles and Newbury streets are good for window shopping and weeping internally at the prices.
Pandemonium Books and Games in Central Square is ideal for sci-fi and fantasy titles, as well as tabletop gaming supplies
Don't waste your time at Prudential/Copley mall. It's overpriced, full of chain stores, and depressing.
When Pigs Fly Bread stores have $3 loaves of normally $7 sourdough on Wednesdays. It's delicious and baked fresh daily, so get on that! You can call ahead in the morning to reserve a loaf if you want to be sure to get one.
I've probably got more, but that will be enough to start with. I hope you enjoy the city!

Who is that Cloaked Man?
Roger Conant 1592 to 1679
According to records, Roger Conant was baptized in East Budleigh, Devonshire, England in 1592, the youngest of eight children. In 1623 he immigrated to Plymouth with his wife, Sarah and son, Caleb. However, he was uncomfortable with the strict Pilgrim society in Plymouth and moved his family to Nantasket in 1624. In the late autumn of 1625, Conant was invited by the Rev. John White and other members of the Dorchester Company to move to their fishing settlement on Cape Ann as their governor.
Still looking for more favorable conditions for a settlement, he led a group of people to Naumkeag, now Salem, in 1626, and continued as their governor. In 1627 a patent was solicited from England and it was obtained by a group led by John Endicott who arrived in Naumkeag in 1628. Endicott and the other settlers of the New England Company now owned the rights to Naumkeag. Fortunately for the peaceful continuity of the settlement, Conant remained in Salem and, despite what must have been a disappointment for him, acceded to Endicott’s authority as the new governor.
Conant built the first Salem house on what is Essex Street today, almost opposite the Town Market. In 1639, his was one of the signatures on the building contract for enlarging the meeting house in Town House Square for the First Church in Salem. This document remains part of the town records at City Hall. He was active in the affairs of the town throughout his life. In 1679, he died at the age of 87.
This dramatic, cloaked statue of Roger Conant faces the Salem Common and stands atop a huge boulder brought from the woods near the floating bridge at Lynn. Artist Henry H. Kitson designed this heroic bronze statue for the Conant Family Association and the statue was dedicated on June 17, 1913.

058: "We’ve become the clingy newlyweds you always complained about. " For reggsy if you're still doing the prompts? If not that's totally okay! :)
I AM still taking prompts! This probably isn’t quite what the prompt asked for but I thought it was cute anyway. Hopefully you like it!
The alarm started ringing on the nightstand next to him, Eggsy kept his eyes closed and groaned. The hand that had been resting on his chest throughout most of the night shifted, groping for the button to turn it off.
“Why do we have to wake up at this ungodly hour, again?” asked Eggsy as he rubbed his face, the back of his mind noting the extra weight on his finger. He still hadn’t quite gotten used to the ring, but a smile spread across his tired face all the same.
“Because we’re going to be busy all day,” replied Roxy, the glint from her own ring managing to find what little of the early dawn light that there was. “And if we want to spar at all, it has to be in the morning.”
Roxy was already up and about, rummaging through the chest of drawers and pulling out various clothing for the two of them.
“It’s called ‘a day off’ for a reason, Rox! What say we just spar here for a bit,” started Eggsy, who pat the bed and tried to pull off his most charming look but only managed to look charmingly daft. “Maybe follow it up with a little breakfast in bed?”
She turned around and threw the gym shorts she had just retrieved for Eggsy, nailing him in the face and earning her an “oof” from her husband.
“Because we’re supposed to have breakfast with my parents at nine, then we’re meeting my friends at the market at 10:30 and then we’re having afternoon tea with your mom and Daisy.”
Eggsy finally got out of bed, slipping the shorts on as he walked toward Roxy, putting his arms around her and resting his chin on her shoulder.
“And then a nap, yeah?
Roxy smiled and scratched at Eggsy’s scruff, “Only if you don’t want to take Daisy to Harry Potter World anymore.”
“Ah, right, Harry Potter World,” said Eggsy, smiling at the thought. “You know, the one in Orlando is supposed to be so much better, right?”
“We are not commandeering Kingsman resources so you and Daisy can get matching Harry Potter robes,” said Roxy, rolling her eyes. “Besides, we’re meeting Harry for dinner at The Dorchester at 8.”
“Ah yes, The Dorchester,” said Eggsy in his most affected posh accent, his pinky stuck firmly in the air. “I do say, this foamed fish mousse is divine.”
Roxy shook her head and laughed before fishing out the rest of their gym clothes and shoving Eggsy’s in his chest. “Right, a full day ahead of us, now get dressed! You still owe me a rematch for flipping me on the mat last time.”
“I’ll let you do whatever you want to me as long as it includes a good pinning,” said Eggsy with a mischievous wink. “You realize we’re like those couples we used to make fun of, right? Their whole days planned down to the minute with markets and tea and Harry Potter?”
Roxy thought for a moment before grabbing the back of Eggsy’s head and bringing him down to her height for a deep kiss, the two holding still for a long moment.
“Maybe, but they don’t go stop evil geniuses from destroying the world when they’re working do they?” asked Roxy, slapping Eggsy’s rear as she went to go put on her sneakers. “And you’re the one that loves Harry Potter.”
“I guess you have a point,” replied Eggsy with a smile, throwing on his shirt as he followed his wife down the stairs. “Now, about that rematch.”

Budget-Friendly Shopping Tips for Grocery Store Visits
Shopping for groceries can be daunting, especially when trying to stick to a budget. However, with some planning and savvy strategies, you can navigate your next visit to the Top Grocery Store in Westwood, MA, like a pro. Here are some budget-friendly tips to help you save money without compromising quality or variety.
Make a Shopping List
One of the best ways to keep your grocery budget in check is to start with a shopping list. Before heading to the Grocery Store, plan your meals for the week. Write down the ingredients you need, and stick to your shopping list. This will help you avoid impulse and unnecessary purchases that can quickly add up.
Take Advantage of Sales and Discounts
Watch weekly ads or promotions from the Grocery Store in Westwood, MA. Many grocery stores offer discounts on specific items or promotions for loyalty card members. By planning your meals around these sales, you can save significant money. Additionally, consider using coupons, which can provide extra savings on products you already plan to buy.
Buy in Bulk
Purchasing items in bulk can be a great way to save money, especially for non-perishable goods. Look for bulk bins at the Grocery Store in Westwood, MA, for staples like rice, pasta, and beans. You’ll often find that buying in larger quantities reduces the cost per unit. Just be sure to buy items you know you'll use before expiring.
Choose Store Brands
Store brands often provide the same quality as name-brand products at a lower price. When shopping at the grocery store in Westwood, MA, consider choosing the store brand instead of more expensive options. You might be surprised at how much you can save without sacrificing quality.
Plan Your Meals Around Seasonal Produce
Seasonal produce is typically more affordable and fresher than out-of-season items. When planning your meals, incorporate fruits and vegetables that are in season. You will save money at the Grocery Store in Westwood, MA, and enjoy the delicious flavours of seasonal eating.
Use a Calculator
As you shop, track your spending with a calculator or a note on your phone. This will help you stay within your budget and make adjustments as needed. If you exceed your budget, consider removing some non-essential items from your cart.
Be Mindful of Packaging
Sometimes, products with fancy packaging can cost significantly more than their unadorned counterparts. When shopping at the grocery store in Westwood, MA, be mindful of how much you pay for packaging. Choose products that offer more value for your money, even if they don’t have the most eye-catching design.
Consider the Cost of Convenience
Pre-cut fruits, pre-packaged meals, and other convenience items can be tempting, but they often come at a premium. When visiting the Grocery Store, choose whole ingredients you can prepare yourself. Not only will this save you money, but it’s often healthier, too.
Don’t Shop When Hungry
It’s well-known that shopping on an empty stomach can lead to impulse buys. Before heading to the Grocery Store, eat a healthy snack to avoid making unhealthy decisions based on hunger. A full stomach will help you stick to your list and make more mindful choices.
Embrace Leftovers
Don’t forget to make the most of your leftovers! When cooking, prepare extra portions that can be stored for later. This will help you save time and money on future meals. When leftovers are in your fridge, you’ll be less likely to spend money on takeout or pre-packaged meals.
Conclusion
With these budget-friendly shopping tips, your next trip to the Grocery Store in Westwood, MA can be both enjoyable and economical. By planning and being mindful of your spending, you’ll find that sticking to a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or variety.

This Lomo Saltado Is Begging to Be Eaten
Tumblr media
Plus, Monsterella Stix are coming, kids can eat free at a couple local spots, and more news
Welcome back to AM Intel, a round-up of mini news bites to kick off the day.
Opening Alert
For a little while a few years back, it seemed a new restaurant was opening in Somerville’s Union Square every other week. But lately, the neighborhood has been quietly chugging along in culinary awesomeness — not just thanks to those newer spots, but thanks to its solid base of decades-old restaurants as well. This year, another wave of newness is approaching. Bow Market is on the way, packed full of vendors (and a brewery) and opening around May.
But first, today is opening day for Celeste (21 Bow St., Somerville), adding to the neighborhood’s Peruvian dining scene alongside veterans Machu Picchu and Machu Chicken. If pisco and ceviche (or lomo saltado, pictured above) sound like a good cure for this snow-covered day, head on over for lunch, dinner, or late-night. Here’s our sneak peek at the food and space from earlier this week.
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is today, and the Globe’s food section is celebrating by highlighting “six female restaurant owners who are transforming the Boston food scene,” discussing their successes, challenges, and thoughts on what’s happening with gender roles in the restaurant industry in the “Me Too era.” Head over to the Globe to learn more about Michelle White of Next Step Soul Food Cafe in Dorchester, Kathy Sidell of Saltie Girl and more, Cassie Piuma of Sarma, Mary Ting Hyatt of Bagelsaurus, Irene Li of Mei Mei, and Julie King of Villa Mexico Cafe.
Monsterella Stix Are Coming
Checkers & Rally’s — a company with two branded drive-through chains, Checkers and Rally’s — doesn’t currently have a Massachusetts presence, but it’s coming. The company has announced plans to open “upwards of 50 new restaurants” in the Boston area, plunking down locations quickly thanks to its “Modular 4.0” buildout model that entails putting together a modular building offsite and delivering it to a plot of land by truck. Checkers and Rally’s serve what you’d expect from drive-throughs, including burgers, hot dogs, fries, milkshakes, and “Monsterella Stix,” which are probably pretty standard mozzarella sticks but more fun to order.
Kids Eat Free
There is a such thing as a free meal, for kids at least. The Globe recently highlighted the Kirkland Tap & Trotter (425 Washington St., Somerville) deal: Kids eat free between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and the menu is kid-friendly but goes beyond “frozen chicken fingers and buttered noodles.” Think fish and chips, hot dogs, and spaghetti with meat sauce. And there are crayons for coloring, of course.
The Frogmore (365 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, Boston) is jumping in the game as well, offering a new kids menu. Kids under 12 eat free until 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and at other times, each menu item is $6. The menu includes mac and cheese topped with crumbled Ritz crackers, chicken tenders with mustard barbecue sauce, and more.

A well-designed commercial kitchen is integral to efficient, safe and profitable food preparation. Designing a commercial kitchen can be tricky because it consists of a more complex features and set up. The owner, chefs, and kitchen workers will appreciate a commercial kitchen with a design that considers ergonomics. Careful planning will avoid costly changes in equipment or construction. The design greatly depends on the space and features needed, and of course the budget. Having a detailed list or menu of all the foods that you plan to prepare in the commercial kitchen can also help in coming up with the design. The layout and design also considers the type of equipment you will be using not only or food preparation, but also for storage and display. Keep in mind the health and safety standards for the layout of the kitchen equipment. Determine if you will require a walk-in refrigeration unit or free-standing cold storage equipment. You’ll know how much space you need for constructing a commercial kitchen based on your equipment. Ultimately, the type of restaurant and clientèle influences your commercial kitchen.
Kitchen Remodeling Contractor Dorchester
In most cases, the kitchen is the most complex house renovation and probably the most expensive, depending on the size, design, and materials used. The project takes time and a lot of expertise is needed from a proficient contractor. Searching for a good contractor is like trying to catch a fish in the ocean, so take time to shop around. Ask around for any recommendation in terms of remodeling companies. Do a background check on the contractors and see if they have all legal documents such as license, authorization to operate, and other certifications particular to the job. Before you decide on hiring a contractor, interview him first to get to know him better personally. You will know that a contractor is a good one when he knows how to listen to your plan and needs. Chemistry also weighs heavily into the selection of a contractor. If they meet with approval, request references and then call to verify them. After zeroing in on one contractor who seems right for the job, take a look at the documents he or she has prepared for you. Check the inclusions of the agreement, so you will know what’s covered for your payment. Aside from materials and services, your agreement must also include a list of everyone who will be involved in your kitchen renovation, such as the carpenters, cabinet installers, painters, and flooring technicians, and ask if they provide insurance.
Creating Your Kitchen Space
Renovating your kitchen can spark up a great chance to lift up its whole vibe, placing new tools for things to be easily accomplished, and with your own unique charm. Choosing a similar concept for your kitchen taps and sinks to the rest of the area will aid you in gaining a unified look. Here is a kitchen guide for you to find out the perfect products to use and info on how to maintain clean and usable kitchen tools in the near future. Constructing the kitchen that you wish for, whether a bit of it or its overall appearance, it involves wise decision making. It’s the right moment for you to decide how your favoured space will function, to really give a space for you to produce quality food and give you enough space for enjoyment and relaxation. Just like most things in the kitchen, sinks and taps have undergone significant innovation over the last few years, with technology incorporated to make chores easier and water usage more efficient. In our kitchen guide you’ll also find information about ergonomic considerations, as well as tips on the installation, care and maintenance of your kitchen products. Redesigning your kitchen may be one of the interesting projects to do but it can also be pricey and tiring. There are numerous things to consider like the room’s vibe and its overall look. Even as there are many things to think about, you have to keep in mind to always think things through and decide wisely.
Fitting A New Kitchen Area
When you are not entertaining, the kitchen is where families spend a significant amount of time. Who doesn’t get excited with a new kitchen in the house? However, this home-improvement project can cost a lot, it takes time, and it comes with a high degree of stress and involved. From picking the right style to finding a designer and agreeing the layout, there’s a lot to take on board. First, you’ll have to deal with some demolition and removal of old kitchen units. The space and the layout of the kitchen needs to be considered when deciding in the number of kitchen units. If possible, they will extend worktops over washing machines and refrigerators, and sink will be fitted into the worktops as well. If you have a gas meter within the sink base unit and if they are having difficulty fitting in all the units, they may move your gas meter outside. If you have to have cupboards removed, the contractor will check if they are safe to remove just before the kitchen is installed. Any other essential alterations to plumbing, gas and electric services associated with the kitchen work will also be included in the plan. Electrical and plumbing work must be carried out by tradesmen registered with a competent and qualified person. This is, of course, for safety purposes.
The Price For Labor?
You need to know whether the quote include materials and labour, as well as any subcontracting the tradesman may do, and even VAT. Unreasonable low rate could be the sign of a tradesman who wants to win the job, but will make up the true value by adding on extra costs during the course of the build. Nonetheless, the cost will depend on size, the design, the equipment, and services needed for the entire project.
If you believe it is time for a fantastic fresh make over for your kitchen area, the entire job can be undertaken, from the planning phase to the removal of your old kitchen area systems to installing a brand brand-new cooking area. This consists of all plumbing work, tiling for walls and floors, painting, embellishing and maybe adding brand-new lighting. All this will assist to develop a remarkable and stylish, approximately date kitchen for you and your family to delight in for years to come. We service the whole Dorchester area.

Whats happened to Fishing Tails? We are back!
I am delighted to say that Fishing Tails is back and will be even better than ever. I won’t bore you with the details as to why I haven’t been around, but I would like to say thank you to those who have supported me over the past few months and have persuaded me to get the site back up and running.
I will start off with some bad news for me. I had almost all of my fishing tackle stolen from a lock up in Dorchester. I don’t know how long ago it was taken, as I hadn’t been over there for a couple of months. Yes that is how long its been since I have done any sea fishing. I am now going to have to replace my beach, boat and fly fishing gear. One thing that you don’t realise until you have to buy it all again, is how much all the little bits of terminal tackle cost. If there is a silver lining to this story, then it is that I will be replacing my gear with mostly new stuff. As I replace it I will write a review on most bits that I buy. This is where you get a bit of a say, as I am always happy to hear recommendations. I am currently in the market for a new head torch for night fishing. I have just bought a new Majorcraft Triplecross lure rod and I have one of the new Fladden Maxximus beach caster on the way. Feel free to drop me an email at [email protected] for any recommendations or any suggestions of tackle that you would like to see reviewed. I would also love to have your catch reports.
One of the most notable changes in shore fishing over the past couple of years, is the switch from the traditional fairly stiff UK rods, that mostly perform better with a multiplier, to the much longer, lighter and slimmer European style fix spool rods. I will be testing both extensively and will give you my opinion on which is the better style.
So the big question for this weekend is, will Chesil be fishable? The simple answer is no. There will always be the small minority that think they know better and will try and win against Mother Nature. Don’t be stupid, all you will do is put your own life in danger and more importantly the lives of the rescue services.
Looking at the wind forecast, it would seem that there is a window opening up on Monday. The sea will be rough and coloured, but the wind should drop enough, to allow us to get a cast far enough behind the breakers, to prevent your line being buried under the shingle. Expect to catch Bass, Cod, Whiting and Dogfish, with the chance of a large Conger.
Danny Hardwick and a couple of his mates, took advantage of just that type of conditions on Wednesday evening a couple of years back. They managed to land some nice sized Codling.
The fish fell to black legwork, tipped with peeler crab.
I am certainly looking forward to Monday, where I will give live updates via Instagram and Facebook. If you are desperate for a fix over the weekend, you could do worse than Preston Beach. Conditions look good for a Bass in the surf.
Conditions:
Chesil Beach: Very rough, bordering on unfishable
Portland: Rough on the West side and around Portland Bill, with poor water clarity. The clarity on the East side is also poor, but it will be a lot calmer, with waves around 1m.
Portland Harbour: Wavelets with clear water
Weymouth Bay: Surf up to 1m with good water clarity
Chesil Beach forecast: Not much more to be said about Chesil, other than avoid it until Monday, unless the wind does drop significantly over the weekend.
Portland Harbour: Plenty of Bass can still be caught in the harbour on lures and bait. If my memory serves me well, November used to be the best time for the large Bass in the harbour. If you don’t want to try my favoured method of lure fishing, then go big and put on a whole squid. It will last a lot longer against the crabs than worms.
Garfish and Pollock can all be caught around Ferrybridge and Castle Cove on float fished Mackerel or small lures. Hamm Beach can often produce Flounder as well as Pout.
Portland: The coloured water will make lure fishing almost impossible around the Portland Bill, but it may work on the East side, if you are prepared for a bit of a walk. It will certainly be more sheltered and fishing with bait during the day should produce Wrasse. Night tides and large fish baits may tempt Conger or Bull Huss.
Weymouth Bay: Weymouth always provides a safe haven and a reasonable mark to fish, when we have a big SW gale. The piers also offer good marks for anglers of all abilities. I have seen reports of numerous squid being caught, but windy conditions and not great water clarity, normally put put the squid off. However you can catch plenty of small Pollock, Wrasse and Garfish from both piers.
As I mentioned earlier the beach towards Preston and Bowleaze looks very good for a Bass. Expect Flounder and Dab to show, as well as Whiting and Dogfish after dark

Roger Conant

McDonald's > DC Brunch: And Other Things To Do
var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth; if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) { /* desktop monitors */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width < 1140 ) { /* tablet landscape */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 768 && quads_screen_width < 1024 ) { /* tablet portrait */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width < 768 ) { /* phone */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }
For the most part, my D.C. friends are quite pretentious, bourgeois, and fancy, and hop at the chance to prove all of the above to anyone looking, and they’ve been in too deep for so long, they’ve forgotten their oodles o’ noodles roots and they’ve forgotten about everything else D.C. has to offer on weekends, none of which include extravagant French toast and egg dishes with bottomless mimosas.
I dig Blavity’s 15 Reasons Why Brunch Is A Preferred Turn-Up For Black Millennials. I also won’t front like I don’t enjoy the occasional at-home brunch with strangers I met the day before at the airport. I’m simply here to say: (1) everything they say brunch brings can be achieved elsewhere, and (2) there’s more.
In the not too distant past, I spent a weekend in DC and challenged my brunch connoisseur friends to show me the most exciting things in their city that didn’t include an hours-long champagne fest on a rooftop on U Street. Here’s are the things that happened:
1. Find the best views. There are hundreds of places in such a small place to see some of the most incredible views. The National Mall at sunset is rarely beat. Other places: Georgetown Waterfront Park; Washington National Catherdral; Dorchester House; The Cairo Apartment Building; The Hay-Adams; Tidal Basin; Hains Point; Frederick Douglass’ House.
2. Walk the city. Unlike the one-horse, one-light towns most of these new brunch goers come from, DC has plenty to see, and plenty of hidden pockets waiting to be rediscovered. Put on your good walking shoes and take them out onto the streets. I like to start at the edge of Georgetown. Don’t stop til your thighs are chafed and your soles are worn. This also works with a bike.
Tumblr media
3. Be the best damn tour guide! Hop on Couchsurfing or Craigslist and find some folks interested in a free walking tour, do a little research, and be their tour guide. Take tips in the end. Thank me later. Places you should visit: a. The Adams Memorial: tribute to photographer. Clover Adams b. The Mary Surratt Boarding House: Where John Wilkes Booth conspired to do the work of God. c. The Exorcist Stairs. Remember the film? Remember the climactic scene? The stairs are still there. d. Rockefeller Mansion in Rock Creek Park. e. Foundry Branch Trolley Trestle Ruins.
var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth; if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) { /* desktop monitors */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width < 1140 ) { /* tablet landscape */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 768 && quads_screen_width < 1024 ) { /* tablet portrait */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width < 768 ) { /* phone */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="pub-2620102590868067" data-ad-slot="3714046831" >'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }
4. Catch a free show. Undoubtedly, there are many many many shows happening each day in D.C. Music, theater, improve, art, etc. Find them! Some of my favorite bands were found by doing this. Hunt them down in bars, parks, or opera halls.
5. The Cuban-American Friendship Urn. Since so many of you fancy, half-woke folks just heard about Cuba for the first time and are now going because it’s the “you ain’t up on this” thing to do, you should also head over to check out this National Monument that went missing for half a century and suddenly appeared in a dump.
6. The Wharf. For those who believe weekend clothes were created to get dirty, head down to Maine Avenue’s Fish Market, get a couple dozen crabs, some crawfish, and have them steam them thangs. Then rip them apart in the parking lot or in one of DC’s dope ass parks: a. Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill b. Dumbarton’s Garden c. The National Mall, of course d. Rock Creek Park e. Malcolm X Park f. Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens g. Constitution Gardens
7. Myth Busters. Head across the river to Southeast D.C. and obtain proof that it isn’t as violence or chaotic as the bourgeois would have us all believe. Check out the dope history, talk to the old folks who go out of their way to speak, and catch a street ball game with the folks. For extra fun, attempt to adopt a DC accent and ask “aye mo, where can I get some utz or carry out ’round here?”
Tumblr media
8. EAT! Some of the most amazing food I’ve eaten came from D.C., just avoid the term “brunch.” Head to Union Market where over 40 vendors are waiting for your money. Check out areas none of your friends have ever mentioned that are lined with mom-n-pop restaurants, avoiding chains by any means necessary. Chase it with a craft beer or tequila, whatever you so choose.
9. The Only Museum That Matters Right Now. Wake up early and hop online to try to get a ticket or two for entry into the hottest thing in DC. With the wait list longer than a mofo, there must be pure platinum in there! Go see for yourself. This is, without a doubt, the best thing happening right now in the district.
10. DM my brother, Vernon (@du_bois100), and ask him where you should be. When he’s not shaming us for missing out on valuable stock buy-ins, he’s out in the street, mingling and being dope.
If these sound boring as fu*k to you, and in reality you came to D.C. to fit in with the brunch-goers, by all means…GO! But if you’re down for exploring, pull out the machete you picked up in that Colombian jungle and chop some weeds and create your own shit.
Happy Weekends!
*Title is Clickbait. I lied. McDonald’s is not better than DC brunch*
