Because I berate and insult practically everyone anyway!

also can i yell a lil bit about the alien design in Clone Wars so far cause there’s some that i REALLY like-!!!!!

obviously these races appear elsewhere but the particular style of Clone Wars lends itself really well to certain races, and in some cases being animated (as opposed to illustrated in comics, etc.) is when their traits really shine! the latter is true in the case of the Lurmen:

when i saw them, i kinda groaned inwardly because oh my god they’re literally just a bunch of hippies’ lemur fursonas. but then they started moving and i was delighted because holy shit they don’t just do the little sway-armed ‘chimpanzee’ shuffle that i expected (which lemurs would not do anyway but in this case would accommodate for their more ape-like and bipedal posture) - they actually do a little sideways hop like some species of lemur do. i can excuse aliens designed after ring-tailed lemurs moving like sifakas just for the sheer delight it gave me to see, both because it’s endearing and i love lemurs and also because we get so very few bipedal alien species that don’t just move like typical humanoids, so this was really refreshing. while the individuals’ designs are pretty basic, i’m still bummed these two concepts didn’t make it into the show:

and fanartists have produced some AMAZING designs of their own that are REALLY REALLY worth a look! 

another thing that’s not done enough in my humble opinion is aliens who don’t have the good fortune to be able to adapt to the oxygen-rich environments that most sci fi species require. i LOVE races designed to have evolved completely alternate respiratory systems (coughcoughlikefishpeoplecough), or those who simply require respiratory aid/protection from the environments we humans are used to. that’s why why i love the Kel Dor:

Plo Koon has been a favorite of mine since i was a kid, firstly because his harsh-looking facial apparatus makes him look like a typical villain but he’s of course a Jedi and one of the most kind-hearted and good Jedi out there, and secondly because the apparatus itself is SO COOL - both in aesthetics and practicality. its perfectly accommodated to his unique features to the point where you can’t tell if its actually a permanent attachment (i don’t think it is? at least not entirely), which speaks to how well it must function. i also like that in Clone Wars, he messes with it a little bit, and we get to see the ‘mandibles’ and tubes move, which makes it look a lot more comfortable than i initially assumed.

another Jedi Master of whom i’ve been a fan since childhood is Kit Fisto, so i was really happy to see him looking FINTASTIC in Clone Wars (i couldn’t resist and im not sorry):

the Nautolans are, to the surprise of no one, one of my favorite races and this style is perfect for highlighting my favorite aspects of their design. i love the care and effort the animators put into making his tendrils move realistically with him (as opposed to the live action movie where they kinda just flopped around loosely like hair). i’m in love with the way his gills follow the shape of his skull (although i have questions about how the fuck that kind of respiratory system is gonna work crammed that close to the brain) and i absolutely love his eyes, and i especially love that the animators utilized the fact that Nautolans communicate via the swirling of their eyes (unrelated to visual design, i also really love that their language is specified to work underwater, which i feel like isn’t usually considered or handled well - i’m looking at you, Aquaman)

to my great delight, i encountered a fish-person race in Clone Wars with which i was previously unfamiliar - the Patrolians.

we only get one example, but this design is just. *chef kiss* so appealing to me. i love that they didn’t shy away from making him more clearly designed for an aquatic lifestyle in favor of making him look more humanoid. the keel-like forearms are a brilliant solution, and the leg muscles make up for his scrawny upper arms to effectively tell us that he powers himself via kicking as opposed to crawling and uses his forearms to steer, which would be extremely effective and his body type is perfect for it. i also love bipedal designs that don’t have typical humanlike leg structure, and i think this is a pretty effective one (though i’ve seen better). also, bonus points for the outfit giving a nod to old-timey diving suits. the only thing i actually dislike about his design is the eye stalk, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense physiologically speaking given both that the rest of him is designed for rapid aquatic locomotion and being extended and exposed would be extremely dangerous for such a delicate organ (although its fair to assume he can retract them), and that typically an aquatic species that requires eyestalks has evolved them specifically for being able to peer above the surface of the water while the rest of their bodies remain hidden (we see this with the Gungan, who are imho an example of god-tier character design), and so would. really need to be positioned at the tops of their heads. his really wouldn’t do him any good at all haha.  

its really clear that the concept artists and animators both spent so much time and effort and put so much care and thought into these incredible designs. (these examples are also why i’m so perplexed that the absolute shit-tier designs on Ventress and Nuvo made it all the way into animation, but i guess they can’t all be winners :/) i’ll probably do another post like this as i move on through the series and encounter more races, and in the meantime if anyone actually read this and was interested, i’d LOVE to get any asks about other races i haven’t mentioned yet!
