i just saw this tag on ao3 Max "Monaco Princess" Verstappen and wow

imagine charles being monaco royalty (well he is but imagine if it was by blood haha) and he for about year or more trying to make a move on still f1 red bull wac max. everyone is invested in this sorts of relationship between them because it's their prince and that guy looks cute and hot at the same time. like everyone from royal family to people who live in monaco wanting to their prince a good match who would be a great partner not be entitled etc.

and here is max who turned down every charles’ expensive gift, looking at prince with those beautiful bambi eyes and doing a hair trick with his imaginary long hair. people started calling him princess way before he even finally accepted charles' courting.

everyone loses their mind when they were spotted together and even more trilled after first public appearance together at some royal event. f1 fans are ecstatic because now apparently they will see max more times and not in no merch. and ofc max now likes going at public events and seems pretty happy doing them

That anon is a glory hunter, and this anon was probably apart of the people that were praising him for wining in Monaco and now hating on him for an engine problem that wasn’t even his fault. It’s sad to see how some people claim to be Charles fans but shit on him at the first opportunity

I'm not sure whether they are a Charles fan or not, but either way, it's important to look at the whole picture of what is happening during a race. Sure, I jump to conclusions myself from time to time. But when you hear the explanations from Charles and Fred, you see some of the onboards and listen to the team radio, it is very clear that the team was trying to solve the issues that were obviously completely out of Charles's control.

In fact, I am in awe of how he managed to keep that car in one piece while driving on Hards in the pouring rain on a track they already didn't have grip on with the Inters! In a race where cars were skating around like Bambi on ice left and right, and 4 other cars DNF-ed because they hit walls/other cars.

my first piece I've written for Tumblr. please be gentle it's a rough rough draft. and let me know if you'd want more. thanks :)

it's saturday night before the race. bambi sits in her hotel room scrolling through pinterest looking for outfit inspo for the next grand prix. she's currently in australia. the race looks good for the ferrari boys. definitely deserving of a podium. unbeknownst to her, down the hall carlos and rebecca are arguing about.... well her. 

"can you please tell me the truth." rebecca pleads. she's had a sense that carlos was with someone between her relationship and isa's relationship wiht carlos. while her relationship did sort of bud during the downfall of him and isa. she feels that there was a third making her feel betrayed. more importantly she feels it was bambi. she's always had this suspicion. seeing the prolonged glances, the intimate touches, and the comments on instagram. she's sure there's a deeper history there. bambi represents all her biggest insecurities. young, a world renowned beauty, a success model and actress. she's currently working with ferrari as an ambassador with unlimited access to the boys. especially carlos. finally carlos answers rebecca. "what are you talking about?" he strains. "I know you and bambi have a more intimate past than you're letting on. I know something has happened between you two". rebecca says as she waves her arms around. carlos rebuts, "nothing has ever happened okay. you're looking into something that's not even there". rebecca avoids eye contact and then yells, "fine! keep lying but if I find out the truth I'll go to the media and let them know all about how unfaithful you are!". carlos's eyes spring open with shock. while their relationship didn't start out the way it should've, he never expected her to use that against him. carlos doesn't answer and instead charges out of the room towards the one person he knows he needs to talk to. as carlos walks out, rebecca texts alex begging her to ask charles if he knows anything. 

alex's phone dings with that message from her now close friend. she feels uneasy asking as she's had similar thoughts about bambi and charles. those two were childhood friends as bambi grew up in monaco and her brothers were involved in racing. she's very close to charles, so close that the media always speculated about them. finally alex built up the courage to ask. "charles... can I ask you something? it's dumb but rebecca is begging for help" she says in an amused tone. he looks up from his phone giving her his undivided attention. she continues... "well rebecca thinks something happened between carlos and bambi, but there's no way right? i mean they are very close to eachother but....". charles smiles really big and grabs his phone again, "alex that's ridiculous I would know if something was happening. he's my teammate and she's one of my best friends". alex winces at that word... best friend. alex thinks some more and blurts out, "has anything happened between you two?". charles looks up with surprise. he stammers a bit, "wh-what? no of course not". he quickly looks away thinking of all the moments through the years where he's felt different with bambi. love? he doesn't know but definitely more than a friend. alex sees him contemplating and begins again, "have you ever felt romantic feelings toward her? you can be honest". charles keeps looking at the wall. "alex this is a dumb conversation. we're together, that's all that matters". she rolls her eyes because that's not a satisfactory answer. in fact that's almost a yes. she lets out a huff and rushes to the bathroom to frantically text rebecca. charles sits for a moment thinking. he needs to talk to bambi. he needs to ask her about the carlos situation himself. 

charles takes the elevator down to bambi's room. as he's standing there he is ruminating over all the interactions between her and carlos. he starts to feel heated. what if it's true? why wouldn't she tell him? why does he feel upset? the elevator finally reaches her level. he walks down the hallway that feels miles long. when he finally reaches her room, he swears he hears that signature carlos laugh. charles feels like his mind is playing tricks on him. he knocks on the door and the laughter ceases. he hears footsteps race to the door and as it creaks open he sees her. his heart clenches at the sight. her golden hair and amber eyes. she mischievously smiles up at him and asks, "what are you doing her leclerc?". just when he's about to answer carlos appears behind her. charles feels like throwing up. is everything true?

Lewis - Aisha. And no, it’s not because of what I saw earlier but Aisha loses the love of her life (his 8th title) and rightfully she should scorn the world of all its inhabitants but she decides to hope and trust.

Mick - Flora. Say what you will but Flora was calm and then she wasn’t sometimes and that’s Mick. One day when I’m not late for class, I’ll go into the characterization of Mick as the personified “I’ll have her home by twelve” and “She calls me Daddy too” Flora didn’t use her powers for bad but if she did, she’d be right.

Zhou & Lando - Roxie. Bambi legs but eventually became a very powerful fairy. His potential is coming or has already come and it’s been slept on.

Esteban & Alex - Musa. Slept on background characters. Have their own issues but like no one knows till it gets bad. (Fernando and RBR). Deserves Better.

Valterri & Yuki - Tecna. Supportive. Kind. Gracious. Underrated.

Carlos & Pierre - Sky (Bloom’s Boyfriend). Okay but it’s getting harder to defend you with the decisions you make. If you could sit still and look pretty then we would be fine.

M*x - Raven. Look the guy has his moments and if you know next to nothing about him, he is a good first pick but then after, run.

Fernando - Trixie. Like bro, no one is fighting you. You are looking for the problems and you will be defeated all the time.

Seb - Brandon (Stella’s Boyfriend). Severely overlooked in my opinion, mister won the last nine races because he could even though he has won the championship. Does a lot for everyone. Good fellow.

**Also Charles could be Stella because of the whole Shining Sun and Prancing Horse parallels. Fiercely loyal to a faulty system (Ferrari and her father).

Lewis hates to be in cool down rooms, he kinda tried bc Charles was there today but the only times he looked relaxed this year was when George was there with him and I’m not saying this bc yay britcedes, it’s just body language (same goes for Max with George, especially if Charles is there too). Everyone on tv and socials trying to make George the villain when he’s basically everyone’s emotional support teddy bambi—- err bear

I think it all comes down to the same reason George got voted as a GPDA director by the drivers. They know he stands for his own values and they know he's incredibly self-reflective. They know they don't have to face bitterness or whatever because George understands a lot of the situations that happen are by chance or because their team or car put them in this position. He will call out situations but he knows when the driver himself isn't to blame he's not calling them out (compare the conversation about the lack of punishment about Max and then Abu Dhabi). He's keeping it professional.

He accepts this is the show and the show must go on. Even when the show isn't a show because it's not fabricated to make Red Bull win. This was supposed to be a metaphor but it turned out to be a horrible comparison because the show suddenly has two meanings.

But I mean it in the way of an actor who watched the important prop on the other side of the grid fall and shatter who's already trying to bring out the best performance possible even though the important prop is missing.

They all get along with George. He doesn't need to be best friends with George. But George is probably the driver on the grid who so far has gotten the healthiest teammate relationships probably in the history of sport. And since this is number 3 now (technically 4) I don't htink this is a coincidence.

That being said. Do you know what makes George so different from all the teammates Lewis had in his life? George has his back. In the way that this is a teamsport and this is a fellow competitor. They're fighting together even if they're battling each other. This is a completely new situation Lewis finds himself in. He doesn't need to fear double crossing. He doesn't need to fear George manipulating everything around him to get his own results. They both know they will fight when they have the possibility to do so. But it's an honest fight. Without manipulation of any kind (at least between them).

And not just that: George has his back off track as well. Lewis has not had a teammate who backed him off track as much as George. Please if you think I'm wrong find me a quote (from the driver directly).

(Also can we talk about how George has the power to literally bring out the best in his teammates like what in the sports anime power of friendship is this?)

Yes, George is everyone's emotional comfort bambi. Yes, that is especially true for his teammates. But it's not true for Lewis. The way Lewis completely relaxes with George. We often talk about how George's body language is attuned to LEwis, or how he loves talking to or about Lewis. But idk Lewis always has a wall up. Oter than George it's maybe Seb that can let him relax be himself and forget about the world that wants to see him fall.

George is showing Lewis what having a good teammate really means and for the first time in his career Lewis is in this position. Yes, George can learn so much from Lewis. But I think Lewis is learning a lot from George as well

Year 1

Charles, or the Marquess for that matter, is quite off for a child his age. He does not speak much, if at all. If anything, he just whines about how boring everything is. The Duke does not care, however, but would rather have him put in his room. Isn’t it a bit too harsh to lock the door, though?

He’s a child… I think it’s better for him to go out and play with younger kids, but don’t tell the Duke that!

Year 4

This morning, I saw a haunting sight! I was cleaning up the kitchen for breakfast when I stumbled upon the Master’s son. He had found himself a lighter and was trying to torch the curtains! I immediately dropped everything and grabbed the tool out of his hand. I checked his hands after, and it looked like he had been burning himself, so I called the family physician right away.

But the nerve of this child… he looked at me like I was annoying him! He could have destroyed the whole house!

Year 5

This was the final straw for all of us! This mad child burnt down his own room! With a grinning smile and sadistic laugh too, mind you! He must be possessed by something, or got some mental disease from his dead whore of a mother. Either way, he’s too dangerous to be in the house, especially now that he’s developed that demonic fire magic.

Today was his birthday as well. He’ll be 16, but it appears his stay with us is finally over. Duke Vincent shall be sending him off to a college until he graduates.

I think if someone would want to really understand me they'd have to read, watch and listen to what I did growing up to understand how I got to where I am today and what might've influenced me.

So that would be Micheal Jackson and Phil Collins and Bryan Adams and some other artists I can't name coz they'd expose what country I'm from ahaa. They would have to read the little stories my grandfather wrote for me and gifted me for Christmas and my birthday and they'd have to watch 'little house on the prairie' and 'Fury' (also obviously taylor swift and lots of fairytales and Disney movies like Hercules and Bambi and Ariel and DreamWorks "Spririt Stallion of the Cimarron because that movie was my entire personality''

1. A children's book about fairies. Unfortunately I can't remember the title of it. But it was the book I picked to attend a reading competition for my school and it really helped boost my confidence at the time. All that practice and in the end; winning haha ;D

hello! I hope you don’t mind if I just make a basic list of some of the AU stories I have read or want to read. Not in any order I just went through my bookmarks on AO3 :) Also I need to read more...Under the cut because it got too long! 

Angel's Wild (not gonna lie this is my favorite fic. I have read this almost a dozen times now)

Summary: But that’s the whole reason he’s here, isn’t it? He’s not out here hunting Humans. He’s not even hunting deer, or bears, or anything else that featured in Bambi. He’s out here, freezing his nuts off every night, because he’s hunting Angels. 

Sometimes Dean wishes that Angels were like how they’re described in the Bible. How people from time too old for him to care much about thought Angels were messengers and warriors of God, protectors of Humans. He knows that how they’re really described in the Bible is actually pretty terrifying, but at least they were told by God that they’re supposed to love Humans, right? 

That’s a thousand times better than what Angels really turned out to be.

Summary: this doesn’t have a summary but it is dean and cas in purgatory and it’s soooo cool! I promise it’s amazing and worth the read!

Basic Lessons in First Aid, Magical or Otherwise

Summary: Most people probably wouldn’t take the naked, heavily wounded man they found in an alley home with them. Most people probably wouldn’t also offer that man a place to stay and become his best friend after realizing he’s suffering from an intense case of post-traumatic retrograde amnesia. Most people probably wouldn’t then risk almost everything they know to save said man, and maybe save the world in the process.

But then again, Dean Winchester, RN (with a specialty in supernatural care), has never been like most people. He may not have a magical bone in his body, unlike his brother Sam, but he’ll do whatever it takes to help. Even if Castiel has questionable opinions about Star Trek.

Summary: Story idea: The most wanted woman in town has announced that she’ll only marry the one who can open her front door with the key around her cat’s neck. Many men try to hunt the cat down, chase and trap it, but to no avail, the cat is simply too quick, smart and clever, and always finds a way to evade and avoid them. You are the first one to figure out the obvious: Do not chase the cat. The cat is befriendable. Get the cat to trust you, to genuinely enjoy your company, and you can hang out with the cat. You may eventually be allowed to touch the cat. The cat will freely let you take the key.

Summary: Dean and Castiel go undercover as a couple going through therapy, in order to catch a monster that specifically targets couples dealing with issues, feeding on their distress, anger, and pain.

They end up going through a lot more than a case, unfolding feelings left untold for so long, discovering parts of each other they never intended to uncover.

But will the feelings raging inside them be enough to bring their walls down?

A Fish Out of Water

Summary: To tie up the loose ends of a hunt, Dean is forced to go undercover and visit Brock Pleasure Ranch, a horrifying establishment that markets its inhabitants to people with ‘monstrous’ tastes.

It should have been a simple thing, to persuade a mer to give him a few scales for a spell. All part of the usual Winchester byline: saving people, hunting things.

But Castiel is far less of a ‘thing’ than Dean expected. He might not be human, but he’s definitely a person. And that means he needs saving, too.

Summary: Dean doesn't expect to see his one night stand again, but then again he also doesn't expect to find out he has an STD. Sometimes life is hilarious like that.

The Bad Cop, Worse Cop Adventures of Freckles and Feathers

The Five People You Meet in Heaven

Summary: Heaven is white.Well. Isn’t that fucking stereotypical.-Dean isn’t really sure how he got here. Or even why he’s here. And hell, for all the times the Winchesters have died, he thinks he ought to know the drill by now. But what he doesn’t know is when most folks go, they find something different.

There’s a system God put in place. That when you’re gone (for good), there are a couple things you gotta do first. There are five people waiting for you.

LUCY & BEDROCK! (TWIST! TWIST!)

Lucille Ball & “The Flintstones” 

“The Flintstones” was TV’s first primetime animated sitcom. It was produced by Hannah-Barbara animation and ran on ABC TV from 1960 to 1966. Following the show's cancellation, a film called The Man Called Flintstone, a musical spy caper that parodied James Bond, was released that same year. The show was revived in the early 1970s and several different series and made-for-TV movies. The original show also was adapted into a live-action film in 1994, and a prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, which followed in 2000.

Although not officially recognized by its creators, the show bears a very strong resemblance to TV’s “The Honeymooners”.  Fred and Wilma Flintstone are reminiscent of Ralph and Alice Kramden, and they have best friends and neighbors Betty and Barney Rubble that are very similar to Ed and Trixie Norton.  The original “Honeymooners” (1955-56) also was spun-off into future iterations, including musical episodes, just like “The Flintstones.”  

Lucille Ball admired “Honeymooners” creator and Jackie Gleason and Gleason even played Ralph Kramden on “Here’s Lucy.”  Ball also worked with the show’s other stars: Art Carney (in “Happy Anniversary and Goodbye” and “What Now Catherine Curtis”), Audrey Meadows (in “Mother of the Bride” on “Life With Lucy”) and even Jane Kean, who played Trixie in the color “Honeymooners” (who was seen on a 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show”).  

CAST CONNECTIONS 

Jean Vander Pyl (Wilma Flintstone / Pebbles) worked with Lucille Ball on several episodes of “My Favorite Husband” radio show in 1948. 

Alan Reed (Fred Flintstone) played a train station luncheon counter attendant in “Lucy Visits The White House” (TLS S1;E23) in 1963, while also playing Fred Flintstone on ABC.  He later appeared on an episode of Desi Arnaz’s “Mothers-in-Law”. 

Bea Benadaret (Betty Rubble) was one of Lucille Ball’s favorite performers. She played Iris Atterbury on “My Favorite Husband” and was Ball’s first choice to play Ethel Mertz.  Instead, she played Miss Lewis in “Lucy Plays Cupid” (ILL S1;E15). 

Mel Blanc (Barney Rubble) was a master of voices best known for Bugs Bunny. He also worked extensively with Jack Benny, once with Lucille Ball. He did two films with Lucille Ball: The Fuller Brush Girl (1950) and G.I. Journal (1944).  In 1969, Blanc did some ADR (dialogue replacement) work on “Here’s Lucy.” 

Hal Smith (Various Voices) is probably best known as Otis the Drunk on “The Andy Griffith Show”. He appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1963 film Critic’s Choice and did three episodes of “The Lucy Show” and one of “Here’s Lucy.”

Howard Morris (Various Voices) played Howard Coe in “Lucy and the Golden Greek” (TLS S4;E2) in 1965. 

Allan Melvin (Various Voices) is best remembered as Sam the Butcher on “The Brady Bunch” and Barney Hefner on “All in the Family.” In 1956, as Corporal Henshaw on “Sergeant Bilko,” he did was seen with Ball in “Bilko’s Ape Man.” Melvin and Ball also appeared together on the 8th Anniversary of “The Ed Sullivan Show” In 1954. 

Harvey Korman (The Great Gazzoo / Various Voices) is best remembered for his work with Carol Burnett on “The Carol Burnett Show”, several times with Lucille Ball. He also appeared on “The Lucy Show” three times. 

Janet Waldo (Mrs. Slaghoople / Hedda Rocker / Various Voices) is best remembered for voicing Judy Jetson on another Hanna-Barbera cartoon series, “The Jetsons” (1962-87). She played Peggy “Keep Jiggling” Dawson on “I Love Lucy” and Lucy Carmichael’s sister Marge on “The Lucy Show.” 

Frank Nelson (Rockbind / Rocky Stone / Various Clerks) did two recurring characters on “I Love Lucy” - Freddie Fiillmore and Ralph Ramsey, in addition to other characters. His distinctive voice was heard on “My Favorite Husband” and he made one appearance, as the harried train conductor, on “The Lucy Show.” 

June Foray (Granny / Nurses) was one of the most famous voice artists in Hollywood, most famous for Rocket J. Squirrel. Coincidentally, Warner Brothers recruited Foray to replace Bea Benadaret as Granny in their cartoons. On “I Love Lucy” she provided the bark of Fred the dog. 

Paula Winslowe (Mrs. Slate / Various Voices) played Mrs. Martha Conklin on “Our Miss Brooks” opposite Gale Gordon. On “I Love Lucy” she was one of the passengers on the S.S. Constitution in “Second Honeymoon” (ILL S5;E14) and a patient (in wheelchair, above) in “Lucy Plays Florence Nightingale” (TLS S2;E14). She was the voice of Bambi’s mother in the 1942 Disney film Bambi.

Verna Felton (Pearl Slaghoople) received two Emmy nominations for her role in the Desilu series “December Bride,” playing Hilda Crocker from 1955 to 1959. She did two episodes of “I Love Lucy,” including playing Lucy’s stern maid, Mrs. Porter. Felton voiced many characters for Disney. 

Howard McNear (Doctor) played Mr. Crawford, Little Ricky’s music teacher on “I Love Lucy.” McNear went on to play Floyd the Barber on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1961 to 1967, filmed on the Desilu backlot. He was also seen in Lucy and Desi’s 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer.

Herb Vigran (Cop) was one of the busiest character actors in Hollywood. He played Jule, Ricky Ricardo’s music agent on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” in addition to playing movie publicist Hal Sparks in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;23). He was seen in the Lucy-Desi film The Long, Long Trailer and six episodes of “The Lucy Show” - all as doctors!

Ginny Tyler (Daisy) voiced Clementine the sheep in “Lucy Buys a Sheep” (TLS S1;E5) and the bird voices in “Lucy Gets the Bird” (TLS S3;E12) and one episode of “Here’s Lucy.”  She did the voice of the sheep in Disney’s 1964 hit Mary Poppins. Although she died in 2012, her voice can still be heard in the chorus of birds outside The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Willard Waterman (Gus Gravel) was a versatile voice actor who appeared on hundreds of radio shows in the 1930s and 40s. He is probably best remembered for playing “The Great Gildersleeve” on both radio and TV.  He was seen on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and The Plumber” (above) and “Lucy the Rain Goddess” (S4;E15).  

Jerry Hausner (Clyde) was best remembered for playing Jerry, Ricky’s agent on “I Love Lucy” (including the pilot). He also did one appearance on “The Lucy Show.”

Sam Edwards (Agent) played the star-struck bellboy in “Lucy Meets the Queen” (ILL S5;E15). He was also the voice of the adult Thumper in Bambi (1942).

Sandra Gould (Various Voices) was best remembered as Gladys Kravitz on “Bewitched”.  She made two appearances on “I Love Lucy” and one (above) on “The Lucy Show.”  

Ann-Margret (Ann Margrock) was one of several celebrity guest stars to be honored with character on “The Flintstones”. She was also a guest star (as herself) on “Here’s Lucy” in 1970 and had appeared on Ann-Margret’s 1969 special. 

Elizabeth Taylor (Pearl Slaghoople in The Flintstones live action film, 1994) was one of Hollywood’s most glamorous and popular stars when she guest starred with husband Richard Burton on “Here’s Lucy” in 1970.  It is odd, then, that she was cast as Pearl Slaghoople, a character that was previously considered frumpy. 

Paul Winchell (Umpire / Thief / Reporter in "Wind Up Wilma” - 1981) was best known as a ventriloquist, but he was also an accomplished character actor who appeared in two episodes of “The Lucy Show” and two of “Here’s Lucy.” 

Arte Johnson (”Flintstone Kids” - 1989) was best known as a cast member on “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”.  He also did an episode of “Here’s Lucy” as an eccentric bird watcher. 

George O’Hanlon (”Flintstone Kids” - 1989) was best remembered as the voice of George Jetson on “The Jetsons,” another hit Hanna-Barbera cartoon. On “I Love Lucy” he was one of two actors to play Charlie Appleby. 

"I Love Lucy” and “The Flintstones”

First, Lucille Ball bears more than a passing physical resemblance to Wilma Flintstone. In “The Flintstones” it is clear that Fred is the leading character and most stories revolve around Fred and Barney, rather than Lucy and Ethel. The tried and true formula of a leading couple and the best friends / neighbors as the secondary characters is used in “I Love Lucy”, “The Honeymooners” and “The Flintstones”.  

Here are a few more tangible connections:

The animated Lucy and Desi that opened pre-syndication airings of “I Love Lucy” were created by the Hanna-Barbera unit at MGM. 

And both shows were sponsored by cigarette companies; “I Love Lucy” by Philip Morris and “The Flintstones” by Winston.  

Wilma and Betty trying to sneak into the Water Buffalo convention in "Ladies Night at the Lodge" (1964) while disguised as men was very close to Lucy and Ethel disguising themselves as male reporters to infiltrate Ricky’s daddy shower in “Ricky Has Labor Pains” (1953). 

The plot of “Operation Switchover” (1964) recycles the premise and many of the same plot elements of “Job Switching” (1952) especially with the domestic disasters on Ricky and Fred's end: scorched clothes while ironing, a fallen cake, and overflowing rice on the stove. 

Like Lucy Ricardo, Wilma Flintstone’s pregnancy was incorporated into the storyline. It was originally thought that like Lucy, Wilma would have a boy, but merchandisers pointed out that there were more opportunities for products for girls, so Pebbles was born. Like Lucille Ball, Jean Vander Pyl (who voiced Wilma) was pregnant at the time of recording and gave birth to her son on the day "The Blessed Event" originally aired on February 22, 1963.

Fred and Barney undertake a rehearsal for the big moment, including Betty rehearsing telephoning the doctor, just like Ricky and the Mertz’s do for Lucy when ‘the time has come’. 

Wilma seems to get cravings for unusual foods including hot fudge and sardines that Fred dutifully supplies, just like Ricky did for Lucy. 

In the father’s waiting room, a man worries his wife might deliver more than one baby, just like Mr. Stanley (Charles Lane) on “I Love Lucy.”

In “Operation Switchover” a character named Hedda Rocker from Good Cavekeeping Magazine is obviously inspired by Hedda Hopper, the famous gossip columnist who appeared on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” as herself. 

Arthur Murray, who’s innovate dance instruction method and dance studios became iconic, is parodied on “The Flintstones” as Arthur Quarry.  In a 1965 episode, he was named Arthury Murrayrock. 

In “Lucy Meets the Mustache” (LDCH S3;E3) Lucy wants to open a sealed letter so she tries a inserting a knitting needle under the flap, a method she says she saw in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. The scene is underscored with “Funeral March of a Marionette” by Charles Gounod, which served as the theme tune of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”. On “The Flintstones” he is parodied as Alvin Brickrock. 

Hollyrock star Rock Quarry is a tribute to Rock Hudson, but talks like Gary Cooper.  Hudson guest-starred on an episode of “I Love Lucy” set in Palm Springs. Previously, Lucy dressed as Gary Cooper (complete with his trademark ‘yup’) to fool near-sighted Caroline Appleby. 

An episode titled “The Soft Touchables” is modeled after Desilu’s hit gangster series “The Untouchables.” “The Lucy Show” parodied their own show in an episode titled “Lucy The Gun Moll” (TLS S4;E25) in 1966 starring “The Untouchables Cast” but using different character names. 

Wilma and Betty’s favorite television show “Peek-A-Boo Camera” catches Fred and Barney acting silly in a 1963 episode that is clearly modeled after TV’s “Candid Camera” created by Allen Funt. In 1971, “Lucy and the Candid Camera” (HL S4;E14) also featured Funt in hidden camera shot plot. Lucy Carmichael also get involved in a hidden camera television show in “Lucy and the Beauty Doctor” (TLS S3;E24).  In that show, the program was called “The Boiling Point.”

The hit Broadway and movie musical movie My Fair Lady inspired many satires (some in name only) including “My Fair Freddy” (1966) and “My Fair Lucy” (TLS S3;E20) in 1965! 

In “Fred Flintstone Woos Again” (1961) Wilma convinces Fred to renew their wedding vows after realizing the official who originally married them wasn’t fully licensed!  On “I Love Lucy” Lucy realized that their wedding was also invalid when she found an error on their license. They go to the spot they first wed to renew their vows, just like “The Flintstones”. 

In “Dial ‘S’ for Suspicion” (1962) Wilma's devotion to a murder mystery novel causes Fred to wonder if Wilma is trying to away with him. In “Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying To Do Away With Her” (ILL S1;E4) Lucy's devotion to a murder mystery novel causes her to wonder if Ricky is trying to do away with her!

When Wilma can’t keep up with the housework, she hires a maid in “Wilma the Maid” (1963). The same situation happened in the Ricardo home in “Lucy Hires a Maid” (ILL S2;E23). While the Flintstone’s maid is an earthy Italian woman named Rockabrigida, the Ricardo’s maid is a humorless woman named Mrs. Porter. Coincidentally, Mrs. Porter was played by Verna Felton, who voices Pearl Slaghoople on “The Flintstones”. 

When superhero “Superstone” is hired for a birthday party but can’t make it - Fred takes his place. On “I Love Lucy” when Superman is promised for Little Ricky’s party, but can’t make it, Lucy takes his place - nearly! 

In “How To Pick A Fight With Your Wife” (1966) spats between spouses escalate to such a degree that the couples split: Fred and Barney are thrown together as roommates, while Wilma and Betty are bunking together at the other house. In “Vacation from Marriage” (ILL S2;E6) much the same thing occurs between the Ricardos and the Mertzes!

The real comparison with Lucy and Desi is something Joe Barbera could have only hoped for in 1960 — enduring popularity. Lucy is still justifiably loved by hoards of fans and “I Love Lucy” is on the air somewhere. “The Flintstones” remains a part of the popular culture, 60 years after the show’s debut.

Well, here is my nearly 7,000 words worth of answers for headcanons on my stories! Thank you to the Anons, @dreatine​, and @thatgeekwhotalks​ for submitting so many wonderful questions! I love you all very much!

Who is always horny and will have sex at any time, at any place and at any time?

Reader. While Spencer is basically always capable of being turned on, there are many situations where he would be uncomfortable. Reader would care much less. Basically the only way she would be completely against the idea is if there were unwilling participants nearby. 

Who is more seductive when they are drunk?

You’re going to see this in the story, but I’ll tell you anyway - Reader is more seductive. Spencer basically turns into a giant pile of mush that won’t stop talking about how much he loves his girlfriend. She’s the one who has to convince drunk Spencer to let her do anything, because he gets distracted every five seconds (again, distracted by telling her how much he loves his girlfriend).

Who is louder in bed?

Reader. Unless she’s gagged. There are some times when Spencer is louder (usually Sub!Spence), but Reader cares significantly less about being heard, so she’s usually louder. If they knew no one could hear them? They’d probably be evenly matched.

Who asks for more cuddles? Who’s the first to initiate cuddles?

Spencer. He’s the one who initiates more often. Reader claims she only does it because he seems like he needs them, but it’s really because she wants them; he knows and lets it go. Reader generally has a hard time admitting she needs gentle intimacy (something he is very aware of and tries to make up for). That’s why it was a big deal when she first asked him to just hold her.

Who makes fun of the other for having a crush on them, and who has to remind them that they are in a relationship?

Reader makes fun of Spencer for being sappy all the time, and he reminds her that she loves it. This cycle never ends. Even if/when (cough) they’re married, she constantly makes fun of him for being so in love with her.

Who starts a food fight in the kitchen?

READER. Spencer is disgusted (and kind of pissed lol), but also feels the undying urge to beat her. Afterwards they both clean the kitchen and each other happily.

Who initiates duets? And who is the better singer?

Reader always makes Spencer sing, even though they’re both bad at it. She’s much, much better than him, though. They like to listen to each other sing. She makes fun of him because theoretically, he should be good at singing, since he can remember all the words and how the notes go. But he sucks, and she loves how it’s one of the few things she’s better at.

Who starts the hand holding?

Spencer. Like I mentioned before, she has a really hard time requesting or initiating gentle intimacy without sex. He gives her an out by initiating it for her whenever he thinks she needs it.

Who grabs the others butt?

Tied. He grabs her butt all the time in public just because he loves how no one would ever believe that he did it. She does it because she just loves touching him. She’s not nearly as sneaky about it.

Who slides their arm around the other’s waist?

Reader puts her arm around him a lot. It’s basically a half-assed hug from her. She also does it anytime she gets even remotely sleepy.

Who likes to put their fingers in the belt loops?

Reader. She would basically always be holding them if he let her. He makes jokes about how she’s basically holding his pants up better than the belt (until she takes them off).

What’s something they like that may be surprising to others?

For Reader, she like to play strategy based board games with him. He didn’t believe it at first, either. For Spencer, he loves watching sitcoms with her (this will be in the story!)

Who is more likely to cheat?

I want to preface this by saying that neither would ever cheat. They both love each other very much and would both reach out to their partner before it reached that point.

That being said, Reader. Only because she is more aggressive in her pursuits. She would still have to essentially be blackout drunk, and even then I don’t think she would be able to go through with it. Spencer I could only see emotionally cheating, and even then I think he would have left Reader before it reached that point.

Who gets attacked by a bully and who protects them?

This will be in the story! The answer is honestly both. Bambi is more of a target than Spencer, but if she ever saw someone mess with Spencer, she would definitely fight for him. Her methods are much less physical than Spencer’s, tho.

Also, Spencer would let Bambi try to fight her own battles at first. He trusts that she’s strong and capable of protecting herself.

Who makes the bad puns and who makes a pained smile every time the other makes a pun?

It depends on the pun. Super technical/scientific puns are more often said by Spencer, and Bambi would cringe at most of them. When Bambi makes super technical/scientific puns (about psychology), Spencer just wants to jump her bones.

Bambi makes the pop culture references and puns that, once Spencer understands what they mean, he hates. Eventually they both start to find them genuinely hilarious.

Which one holds the umbrella over both of them when it rains?

Spencer, just because he’s taller. There are times Bambi demands to try and he just gets hit in the head a lot. He suffers through it for her, though.

If your OTP went on vacation, where would they go and what would they do?

I think they would go to London.

Bambi would want to go to the Freud Museum, and Spencer would hate it. He’d spend the whole trip asking her why she bothered studying someone who’s been so discredited (despite her explaining that’s why she’s interested! And it’s history, Spencer!)

To make up for it, she would surprise him by taking him to the Down House (home of Charles Darwin). She’d also book them a private Doctor Who sightseeing tour and pay the guide extra so that Spencer could tell her everything, instead.

Who would take the pictures?

Bambi. Spencer breaks every camera he touches. He also doesn’t like being in pictures, but will take them with her (so a lot of the pictures are selfies).  Occasionally he’ll snap a candid of her and she loves it even though it’s blurry. Most of the pictures taken are of their view, rather than either of them.

Spencer! This one should be pretty obvious (lmao). Although he’s less risky now than he was when he met her, he’s still pretty adventurous. She acts like she hates the idea, but she definitely is excited by it.

Bambi. She loves the chance to take care of him under any circumstances, which is why she tries to keep it relaxing. Problem is, someone taking care of Spencer awakes all of his urges (since it basically never happens, he’s spent his whole life taking care of other people, even his own mother), and he has to have her immediately. She usually lets him.

Who likes to walk around the house naked and who tells the other to go put some clothes on?

Spencer is basically never naked, so it’s Bambi. Since he lives in an apartment, he’s always concerned about all the different situations someone could walk in, or that he’d have to quickly evacuate. He wears pajamas basically all the time, and was shocked to find that Bambi basically doesn’t own any.

He tells her to put clothes on, but they’re always his clothes and they never stay on very long.

Who sleeps on the couch when they get into a fight?

Bambi. She’d wait until he fell asleep because she’s worried about him not getting enough, even when she’s angry. Afterwards she would get up and leave. She’d wake up in the morning to him desperately trying to fit on it with her while he apologized.

Who thinks they are not good enough for the others love?

Surprisingly, Bambi. She always wonders if she really did take advantage of Spencer, and if he would have ever considered her to be anything special if he’d met her before he went to prison. She never talks to him about it, but he can tell she’s worried about it so he constantly reassures her.

Who’s more afraid of losing the other?

Spencer. He’s petrified that he’ll make a mistake and lose her either by someone taking her (cough cough), or hurting her badly enough that she can’t be with him anymore. It takes him a long time to really open up about his problems because he’s worried she’ll start to view him as more of a client than a boyfriend.

Who thinks they keep messing up, only for the other to tell them they don’t need to worry?

Both of them. Spencer more often than Bambi. As he starts to actually unpack his trauma, he worries less about it and Bambi starts to worry more. At one point she worries that once he’s better, he won’t want to be with her anymore (essentially, that he’ll view her as a therapist instead of a girlfriend lmao).

Who starts randomly slow dancing with the other in the kitchen?

Spencer dances with her every chance he gets because he remembers that he never got a chance to dance with Maeve, and he never wants to wonder with Bambi. She comes to expect it and will put music on whenever she wants to dance with him. At one point, she jokes that they’ll have their first dance planned way before they get married. He gets very embarrassed but excited.

Who holds the other just above the ground and kisses them?

Spencer picks Bambi off the ground and kisses her all the time. Basically whenever she gets sad, he picks her up and carries her around.

Who says shitty puns and sex jokes just to see the other giggle and blush?

Bambi. Despite Spencer’s demeanor during sex, he gets very flustered when she brings it up or is raunchy outside of the bedroom. He never expects it, so she likes to mess with him.

Who said “I love you” first? and who ends their arguments in a fight with “Because I love you”?

Spencer said it first, and she immediately said it back. It was completely random, and neither of them made a big deal out of it. It was like they’d said it a million times before.

He’s also the one who ends arguments with “Because I love you.” Mostly because she knows if he’s using that line, he has an actual answer that’ll prove her wrong. It’s his way of letting her win, so it always successfully ends the argument.

Spencer, technically. She kept staring at his hands until he held hers. Eventually she admits that’s not why she was staring, but that she enjoys it nonetheless.

Bambi grabs and smacks his butt all the time. He jumps and blushes every single time.

Spencer pulls her close to him whenever they aren’t holding hands. She occasionally has to stop him. She’ll link arms if she’s worried he’s getting too touchy.

Bambi. It’s a (not at all) subtle way of telling him she wants them off.

Who likes to write the other’s name on their wrist?

Bambi won’t necessarily write it on her wrist, but she doodles his name in her notebooks often. At first he’s worried when he finds it because he thinks she’s keeping client notes, but then he realizes they’re really just teen-romance doodles (including her signature with “Reid” instead of her last name).

Does Bambi have a nickname for Spencer? If so, what is it?

She occasionally calls him Prince Charming to be funny. Otherwise, she calls him “darling” or “dear.” He always makes a joke about the latter (because Bambi is a deer).

Why did Spencer make first move to Bambi in the prison? What was it about her that he felt a connection to her that made him act that first day?

For one, she was just the first person he’d really seen and she was very beautiful. But beyond that, she immediately recognized that he was a good person, which was something he really, desperately needed someone to tell him.

She never doubted his intelligence or moral character (even when she should have). He could also see that despite not being scared of him, she was very… jumpy. He thought it was cute and wanted to experiment with it.

I also didn’t show their initial interaction, but she was generally interested in learning more about him and his work. Not to profile him, but because she recognized he was being dehumanized and wanted to offer him some reprieve. That really touched him and it made him a lot more vulnerable than he would have been with a more transactional person.

Was he surprised that she let him have sex with her in the prison? Did he honestly expect her NOT to come back?

At that point, he was kind of fucking losing it, so I’m not sure he ever really stopped to consider whether she would want to or not. He figured she would make it obvious if she didn’t want to. After every single one of their interactions, he was convinced he’d ruined everything and she wouldn’t come back. She felt the same and was always worried he’d turn away her visits.

After the events of Part 2, did Bambi and Spencer talk about what happened when she called out Flower?

Yes and no. They spoke a lot in generalities about their hard and soft boundaries. It did change how their later sexual interactions went. He was much more vocal about what was going to happen and she was more obvious about whether or not she was enjoying it.

For awhile, they used the red/yellow/green method to test how far the other was able to comfortably go. They also had a period where they only had vanilla sex to protect his psyche (and remind him that he doesn’t have to hurt her to make them happy).

How did that conversation go? Is that when they decided to become an actual couple or did they both know back at the prison that they were meant for the other?

Spencer’s joke about the husband was only half a joke; he really did wonder how wrong he’d been about her since he only got to see her very briefly. Although he wanted to be with her since the prison, it wasn’t until after the Flower situation that she asked him if they could be in a relationship. He was initially too stunned by the question to answer. When she asked again, he said yes.

Which one likes to surprise the other with a lot of small random gifts?

Bambi buys him the nerdiest gifts ever. She doesn’t even understand half the references, she just knows it’s something Spencer talked about before, so she gets it for him. Half of it she just keeps at her place so that he’ll feel more comfortable there.

Which one keeps accidentally using the other’s last name instead of their own?

Both of them! Since they both call each other Dr. (last name) when introducing them to others, they mix up their names all the time. Bambi always jokes that once they’re both Dr. Reid, things will be way easier.

Who spends almost all their money on the other?

Bambi spends a lot of money on him. She wants to make sure he always has something to remember her by. She also wants him to experience things with her – especially considering it doesn’t happen often. So when they go out, she usually goes pretty hard.

Who walks around the house half-naked and who yells at them to put on some clothes?

Neither of them, honestly! If anything, Bambi kind of wants him to be more naked, more often. Since he’s usually pretty self conscious, she likes the opportunity to surprise him with praise. She’s known to pop up behind him and put her hands up the front of his shirt.

Which one tells the other not to stay up all night and which one stays up all night anyway?

Both of them. They’re chaotic as hell. Even worse, their all-nighters never really seem to coincide. Bambi is more likely to get more sleep, even if it’s still not much.

Which one tries to make food for the other but burns it all by accident and which one tells them that it’s okay and makes them both cookies?

Bambi is a terrible cook, but an excellent baker. So while Spencer would tell her it’s okay, she would already have made the cookies to eat instead of dinner. His sweet tooth is usually pretty okay with it.

Who is more seductive when they are drunk?

Bambi. Spencer is surprised, because she usually is the more reserved of the two. When she drinks, he jokes that she becomes an entirely different person. He assumes that persona is more similar to what she was like as a teen/young adult.

Who is louder in bed?

Spencer. Bambi is very quiet, and enjoys hearing him more than she enjoys expressing herself. Spencer loves when she does make noise, because it shows just how overwhelmed she really is.

Who is more protective?

Spencer. Bambi gets pretty protective of him, but also knows that he can take care of himself. While Spencer wants to give Bambi a chance to take care of problems herself, he often finds himself unable to wait. He would throw hands for her in seconds. It would take a bit more for her to become violent.

Spencer talks to her while she’s sleeping often. She doesn’t have the heart to tell him that she’s a light sleeper. Sometimes when he suspects she can hear him, he’ll only talk to her in other languages.

Bambi usually drives! Just because she likes to, and he doesn’t.

Who falls asleep in the others lap and who carries them to bed?

Spencer falls asleep in her arms a lot, but she can’t carry him to bed, so they just sleep on the couch. On the off chance she’s the one curled in his lap, he would definitely carry her to bed.

They share the little spoon spot about 50/50. If one had to win, it would be Spencer as little spoon. Any chance for her to baby him and make him feel loved and vulnerable, she will jump on.

Most common argument?

Conversations about the zodiac and personality tests. They argue about whether or not one is more justified than the other. Basically any psychology topic ends up in a playful fight. She just hates that he’s always right, so she’ll argue whatever side he doesn’t take until he can’t handle it anymore and jumps her.

Favorite non-sexual activity?

Holding hands while they both read their own books. A close second is walks the two take in the park.

What is their favorite feature of their partner?

Bambi loves how expressive his face is, and the way he uses his hands when he talks.

Spencer loves the way she’s always humming and singing when she thinks he isn’t paying attention. Sometimes when he’s having a hard time falling asleep on a case, he’ll think about her humming to help him fall asleep.

What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?

Spencer starts calling her by her real name more often. Bambi is much more affectionate (hugs, holding hands, kisses on the forehead/cheek).

Who wakes up first? Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?

Bambi. She usually wakes up with the sunrise. Unless Spencer has a case, he sleeps in late and basically never wants to leave. She keeps a book on her bedside table so he can cuddle with her until he’s ready to get up.

Spencer always wants to hold her hand. Whenever she lets go because she needs to do something, he gets very sad. She tries not to take too long.

Bambi initiates, Spencer kisses harder. If Bambi kisses hard, she is really turned on. Like, they better get in private real quick.

Has Bambi met Diana? If so, how was that meeting?

She hasn’t yet, but when she does, it goes well. Spencer was hesitant because he didn’t want Bambi to see what he might turn out to be. In the end, Bambi was very patient and enjoyed hearing Diana’s stories. She’s never bothered when Diana doesn’t remember her, and says she loves the chance to meet her over and over again.

Also, did Spencer, on some level, hope to get Bambi pregnant after he had sex with her in the prison and the time in part 2, considering he has an impregnation kink?

In the prison, probably not. Too many logistics that would be problematic if she got pregnant. Outside of the prison, yeah, he did. He wanted to dominate/claim her in any way he could. He was also very emotional in Part 2, so the idea of being with her forever sounded really ideal.

Spencer is always trying to sleep in her lap. Always. He’s like a cat; he falls asleep there so often and she just has to sit and suffer because she wants to get up but he looks so cute.

Reader walks around the house naked all the time and Spencer always freaks out because she leaves all her blinds open and she’s just like “who fucking cares?” Then he gives her a 20 minute lecture on stalkers and peeping toms.

Which one tries to make food for the other but burns it all by accident and which one tells them that it’s okay and makes them both cookies?

Spencer burns everything he tries to make her. Reader is actually a pretty good cook, although she eats at the bar way too often. When Spencer found out how much she loves baking, he almost made a joke that it didn’t seem to suit her, but got distracted by picturing her in a maternal setting.

Which one constantly wears the other’s clothes?

Surprisingly, Spencer steals her clothes a lot because she wears things around the house that are way too big for her (he also usually shows up straight from work and has no other clothes). She basically lost all of her basketball shorts, sweatpants, and big t-shirts.

Which one likes to surprise the other with a lot of small random gifts?

Reader has always wanted to do a road trip across the country, so Spencer is trying to buy her a small gift from every state. He’s like halfway there thanks to work. She plans to buy him one in each state once they finally get to go.

Which one keeps accidentally using the other’s last name instead of their own?

This one is the same for all of them, since Spencer is referred to as “Reid” all the time, it’s easy for his girlfriend to tag “Reid” on her own name, too. Less so a problem for this Reader as Dark Side, though! 

Which one gives the other their jacket?

Spencer gives her his jacket often, but every now and then she’ll drop her oversized clothes over his shoulders when he’s cold or sleepy. He snuggles it like a toy.

Who’s the first one to admit they have feelings for the other?

This wasn’t shown, but it was Spencer! She was having a really awful day, so he stayed after (per usual). Although she was the one to start the conversation and vent about her day, Spencer was the one who basically told her that she deserved to be treated better. Reader asked if he knew any willing men, and he (ahem) volunteered himself.

How good would your OTP be at parenting?

They would be the coolest and most chaotic parents ever. Reader would let the kids get away with everything, but they would be (for the most part) very well behaved. She would try to get them to get into trouble with her as they got older. Eventually, their idea of getting into trouble was things like correcting their teachers and grammar mistakes in graffiti. Spencer was very proud.

Who said “I love you” first?

Reader was the first one to say I love you, and it was a mistake. She was so embarrassed she covered his mouth and kicked him out. He shouted it back from the hallway.

Who ends their arguments in a fight with “Because I love you”?

Reader. After she got over the initial embarrassment, she says it nonstop now. Spencer knows she does it to win arguments, but he still lets her win every time.

After part 2, did the situation with the team get better for the Reader and Spencer? Who was the first to come around? And did JJ and Emily ever confront Spencer on catching him and the Reader finishing having sex?

Emily was the first person to come around. Her and Reader had a heart to heart at the bar a few nights later. Spencer and JJ had a talk, with the latter agreeing that both of them had been hard on the other.

At first, JJ and her were just cordial until one night JJ desperately needed a babysitter and asked Reader, who was so touched by the fact she trusted her with her kids that the two finally apologized to the other.

JJ and Emily are still mortified about what happened in the office, and Reader likes to bring it up often. Spencer is super embarrassed about it, but also a little proud, so he lets her.

Who whispers inappropriate things in the other’s ear during inappropriate times?

Both of them. All the time. At first, it’s mostly Reader, but as time goes on, he gets way raunchier than her.

Yes, she does meet Diana. Spencer is shocked by how calm and patient she is, and Reader gets mad at him for it (because of course she can be nice and maternal, asshole!) Diana loves how goofy and fun she is.

They would go on the road trip across the country! Reader would take a BILLION pictures, and demand Spencer take pics of her at landmarks (even though he’s terrible at it).

Reader hates having to wear glasses. Spencer thinks she looks adorable in them. She also loves his glasses - he rarely wears them because every time he does, she tries to have sex with him lmao.

Reader. The funniest part is she spends it on experiences she forces to Spencer have with her. Things like… going to amusement parks, watching movies he’d never otherwise see, etc. She also buys him lots of keychains, pins, stationery, and fancy pens. He basically always has at least one gift she’s given him on him at all times.

Who is insecure about deserving the other's love?

Spencer! It’s not that surprising considering who he is as a person, but… He’s always seen Reader as a super beautiful unattainable goddess who shouldn’t even look twice at him. Despite being super submissive in bed, outside of it she constantly showers him in praise and shows him off to everyone who will listen (including cashiers, family, and the rest of the team, all of whom are forced to listen).

What happened after? Did both the reader and Spencer go to therapy?

Spencer was put on paid administrative leave. His sabbatical was moved up so he could stay with Reader. They did both go to therapy, and he taught at university for a semester until Reader returned to work. 

Was Spencer able to properly tell the Reader that she was love of his life?

Yes! Not long after the situation, the two moved in together (out of her fear and also because they wanted to have a more serious relationship). Within a couple years, he would propose to her.

Were the team a little concerned with the aftermath of Spencer's rage?

Yes, but no more than they were with Hotch and Foyet. If anything, they were less concerned considering Spencer’s history with his girlfriends. Mostly they were just thinking “Thank god she’s alive.” Since Spencer was so open to therapy and an extended sabbatical, they knew he would be okay. They still stopped by and checked in on the two of them often. About halfway into the time off, they actually got worried Spencer wouldn’t want to come back because he was so happy spending time with her.

While this was the first time he’d done it in awhile, he continues to do things like this more often. Each time it gets a little bit easier. He can’t fix her problems by himself, but he does continue to find more ways to make her feel beautiful.

When they do eventually have sex with the lights on like it’s no big deal, it means a lot to both of them. She doesn’t actually even notice until much later, when he brings up how happy it made him.

Yes! He does this often, but is worried that it will distract her. He usually does it in a funny way, to show her that we’re our own worst critics.

Different Kind of Daddy

After he got the news, what changed for Spencer? Has his desire for the Reader grown exponentially? Was he afraid of hurting her? Did the reader reassure him?

Not too much changed in their dynamic - it was already pretty solid. While he was more attracted to her, most of that attraction was not necessarily sexual more than it was intimacy. Things like holding her more often, wanting to bathe with her, wanting pictures of her. He was afraid of hurting her, especially since they were used to more rough play (which she didn’t really want to stop, but he was uncomfortable with it).

Reader often reassured him that her and baby would be fine. One day she got tired of waiting and just straddled & rode him like an unhinged woman. After that he got a lot more lenient.

What has he done to prepare for the arrival?

Mostly normal things. He already knows a ton about the pregnancy and birthing process because he learned it when JJ was pregnant. He started looking at and buying more baby related things as the pregnancy went on. Mostly they did it together. The only thing he did by himself was buy small trinkets for her whenever he had to travel. He also started behaving more conservatively at work (taking less risks).

How protective did Spencer get with the Reader? More possessive? Did he confront anyone who so as much looked at the reader in a wrong way?

Very. While he wouldn’t ever get upset or hostile with anyone, he definitely didn’t like her being in any situation without him that was even slightly dangerous. He didn’t even really like her going to stores without him in the later months. He freaked himself out by looking up information about crimes against pregnant women.

But overall, he kept a handle on it. She did everything normal, anyway.

How was Spencer when the Reader first started showing? Pride? Horny?

He definitely felt a lot of pride. She would constantly wear maternity shirts that were nerdy or explicitly said she was pregnant. They made him happy. She also bought maternity specific lingerie, which was the most turned on he was the entire pregnancy.

For the most part, seeing how she looked while pregnant stirred up a lot of complicated emotions (Will I be a good dad? Am I supporting her enough?) but also a lot of very happy emotions (He never thought he’d get here, he loved other people knowing she was his). You know how it goes.

Repentance

Did Spencer and the Reader eventually get together?

Yes! While nothing happened that night, they started seeing each other more often (and not just when they were sad!). Eventually, he asked her on a real date. Their progress was very, very slow. It took them like another year before they actually started seriously dating and announced it to coworkers (who already been knew).

Has Spencer become more affectionate with the Reader?

He stopped holding himself back. Reader had to remind him often that most people don’t touch their friends like he does. He didn’t really know, since he doesn’t normally touch anyone. It was part of him realizing how much he liked her.

I think, eventually, yes. But like I said, it took a very long time. Spencer and Reader both had a lot to work through before they could give themselves to the other. They didn’t want to rush into things and make juvenile emotional mistakes.

He eventually climbed back into bed with her, but she was too tired to even notice at first. In the morning they wake up very hungover, but cuddling very intimately.

Yes! The next time she went to his place and saw the keyboard, she made him play for her. She sang though (he’s terrible at it).

She calls him Tomcat sometimes as a joke when he gets feisty and reminds her of the way he was at the Jazz Festival (where they heard “Tom Cat Blues”). He’s since started calling her Duchess in return since she made him watch Aristocats with her.

Callie’s Disney Princess Retrospective: Cinderella

(Snow White Review)

The year was 1950, 13 years after Snow White’s release. Despite that film’s mass success, Walt Disney’s next feature films during the 1940’s such as Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi would all bomb. His only true success at the time was Dumbo, and that film was dampened by a mass strike during production that saw many animators walk out. It didn’t get any better when America entered World War II and the military took over many different animation studios, including Disney. They not only had to produce propaganda shorts but due to the limited funds, they were forced to rely on Package Films and live-action to survive. As the 1950s began to dawn, it was clear to Walt that if he wanted to stay in business, he needed another hit. But not just any hit, he needed the same kind of success that Snow White brought him. But what film could give him that success?

For that, he returned to fairy tales, and he found one. A story that he could relate to as a Missouri-born boy who began with nothing. A tale that could appeal to just about anyone. A true rags to riches story of one down-on-her-luck girl having all of her dreams come true. That film would be Walt Disney’s twelfth animated feature, his second fairy tale-based film, and of course the creation of the second Disney Princess who quickly became one of the most famous. Thus, let us discuss the 1950 film, Cinderella.

Overview

Since a young child, Cinderella has been in servitude by her cruel stepmother Lady Tremaine. She is regularly mistreated and worked to the bone by both Tremaine and her nasty stepsisters Drizella and Anastasia. Despite this, Cinderella keeps a cheerful and hopeful demeanor, caring for her mouse friends and hoping that someday the dream that she has wished for will come true. A day that seems to have arrived when the family gets an invitation to a ball held to find a suitor for The Prince. With all eligible maidens asked to attend, Cinderella believes that her chance has arrived, but Lady Tremaine has other plans.

Just as it looks like all of her hopes have been shattered, Cinderella’s kindness and hard-work are rewarded by her Fairy Godmother giving her what she needs to attend the ball. She has a lovely time but is forced to flee at midnight with only a lone glass slipper to remind her of that night. But the ended up charming the Prince and left the other slipper behind, so now the girl who fits the slipper will be made the prince’s bride. Once more, Tremaine tries to prevent Cinderella from succeeding. But with the help of her animal friends and her own hope, Cinderella’s dreams will at long last come true.

Review

As a little girl, there were many films that I would watch over and over again, such as The Aristocats or The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. But I think that Cinderella was the one that I would play back the most. I remember every single part of this movie. The music, the story, the characters, just everything. And even after all of these years, my feelings and love for the film haven’t changed. If anything, it’s only grown. I still remember when my family went to Walt Disney World, and aside from Mickey Mouse the only thing that I cared about was meeting Cinderella. I did so on the last day in the Magic Kingdom, and she was so kind and beautiful and was everything I ever dreamed of. It is a moment that I will never forget.

Looking at the film itself, it’s clear that it took a lot from Snow White. A fairy tale-inspired movie, a heroine in servitude who charms all around her, an evil stepmother, a handsome prince, animal companions, you name it. I don’t think that it was accidental either. As I said, Walt /needed/ another Snow White success story. He needed to replicate what made that film work and make it better. Which he did. While the two films are similar, it’s arguable that Cinderella improved on many of those elements. While we only really get told that Snow was a servant and only see it briefly at the start, we see Cinderella’s suffering throughout the film. While Snow could look a little off due to the animators still getting used to animating realistic humans, Cinderella looks realistic, moves more fluidly, and fits the style of the film much better. While The Queen never interacted with Snow until the end and therefore never see how she treats her, we see Lady Tremaine’s cruelty towards her stepdaughter in full force and it’s equally as chilling. It truly feels like Walt looked over Snow White, saw what could be improved on, and did so with Cinderella. It really shows how far the company had come since 1937.

But Walt wasn’t the only important person on the film. In fact, he was less involved than he was with Snow White since he was focusing more on live-action and developing Disneyland. This was the film that established Disney’s most talented and loyal animators, his Nine Old Men. These men not only worked on the first five features and the Package Films, but they would go on to work on every film up to The Fox and the Hound and some even went into Imagineering. These would be the men who not only pulled the company back onto its feet after WW2, but they would teach future Disney animators/directors such as Glen Keane, Jon Musker, Rob Clements, Andreas Deja, Brad Bird, and so many others who would continue their legacy. Cinderella herself was done primarily by Marc Davis, Eric Larson, and Les Clark.

Like Snow White, the story is pretty straight-forward. It seems to be based mainly on the version written by Charles Perrault and some of the Grimm Brothers version. It does some expansion, like showing what Cindy’s daily life is like. Having her dress get ripped apart, her getting locked up, and of course, giving an expanded role to the mice. Otherwise though like with Snow White, it’s one of the more faithful adaptations minus a few things. For example, if we go off the Grimm version, the stepsisters don’t mutilate themselves to fit into the slipper… and I don’t have an issue with that either. It can feel a little dragged out, like IDK how necessary the King and Grand Duke scenes were aside from establishing certain things like the ball and the slipper search, but it’s nothing that brings anything to a halt.

The animation is gorgeous. The Nine Old Men weren’t chosen out of random, after all. This film really shows off their talents. Characters like Jaq and Gus, Lucifer, and the Stepsisters are very lively and entertaining to watch. Ward Kimball, who was the main animator for Lucifer the Cat, used his own cat as a reference after Walt pointed it out to him, and you can tell that he was having fun with it. The more realistic characters like Cinderella and Lady Tremaine look and move very well despite the challenge the animators had keeping that realism up. I’d say that their work paid off though. Lady Tremaine especially has some of the most chilling, frightening expressions of any Disney Villain. Frank Thomas did a masterful job making her cold demeanor reach through the screen and to the audience. The art itself looks beautiful and we can thank artist Mary Blair for it as she did the concept art for the film. The use of colors and shadows were done very well. It’s just the right amount of brightness when necessary, and the right amount of darkness when necessary. It hits the mark perfectly.

Then there’s the sound and the music. On the latest rewatch, I noticed how they use music for characters a lot. Take the sequence where Jaq has to distract Lucifer in the first act for example. When he’s crawling across the wall, getting ready to get at Lucifer and kick him into his own milk bowl. They use strings for his movements as well as for strings, like the other mice shutting up Gus when he laughs. It’s nothing new for Disney, after all, it was doing this in Steamboat Willie that launched the company into fame. But it always adds so much even if you don’t realize it. The score uses a lot of strings and horns, knowing when to sound triumphant and when to be subdued. It’s a very good score.

Cinderella’s soundtrack was the first to be done by the newly established Walt Disney Records, allowing the company to gain profit for their own music. The vocal tracks have two classics worth mentioning. The first is Bippidi-Boppidi-Boo, the Fairy Godmother’s song. It’s a super fun, whimsical song and even though I still struggle to get the words right, it really fits the Fairy Godmother’s nature and is just so darn catchy! The other is of course the theme of the film,  Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes. There are several variations of the song throughout the film, but of course, the first time done by Ilene Woods (I’ll talk about her more when I do Cinderella’s character in-depth) is the one we remember most. It’s beautiful, hopeful, and was one of my favorite songs as a little kid. I used to annoy people with how much I would try to sing it, haha. It really tries to convince you that your dreams CAN come true, and by golly did I believe it when I was a kid… and deep down I still do, I supposed. Point is, it’s a lovely song~

What about the characters though? Well, let us have a looksie.

As with Snow White, there are many animals, though this time it’s mainly mice and birds. The mice are the main ones, as well as the only ones who can talk. There are other animals like the birds, a horse, and of course Bruno the Dog. But the main animals to discuss are Lucifer the Cat and the du of Jaq and Gus. Lucifer is a cat, so as expected he chases the mice. But it’s clearly not just due to instinct. It’s shown throughout the movie that he seems to take sadistic glee in chasing after them, especially Gus which is especially clear in the final act. But he also enjoys tormenting Cinderella, such as messing up the floor when she’s wiping it down during the Sweet Nightingale sequence and trapping Gus with the key in part to keep her locked up. He also enjoyed getting Bruno into trouble at the start of the film, which ends up being his downfall at the end. He seems genuinely cruel which...I mean with a name like Lucifer, is it a surprise that he’s a little devil? He has some great expressions thanks to Ward Kimball and was a fun challenge for our favorite mice.  

Speaking of, Jaq and Gus serve as comedic relief and the unofficial heroes of the film when you really think about it. They drive many of the events forward such as making Cinderella’s dress and retrieving the key from Lady Tremaine. Jaq is the unofficial leader of the mice and the most talkative by far. He’s charismatic and crafty, usually unafraid (for the most part) of going up against Lucifer or from helping Cinderella whom he cares greatly for. We don’t know how long he’s known Cinderella, but he’s the one who assures Gus that she’s a nice person. Gus the newbie of the mice and a little dim-witted, but well-meaning. Due to being new, he ends up getting into several incidents like nearly being caught by Lucifer several times. Jaq and Gus make a fun duo and I always enjoyed seeing what the two would get themselves into. Also for added fun, both mice were voiced by Jimmy MacDonald (nowadays they’re played by Rob Paulsen and Corey Burton respectively). Jimmy was not only the main sound effects man for the studio but at the time he was also the voice of Mickey Mouse himself. Guess he’s a natural fit for mice, huh?

Next, we’ll go to the royals. Sadly, like with Snow White, the prince is more or less a plot device. I guess they were still having a tough time with realistic male characters. He’s a handsome young man, but sadly that’s all there really is. He doesn’t even get a name, being dubbed as Prince Charming in most material and IDK if that’s really official. They DID plan on giving the Prince more of a role, such a planned sequence with him hunting a deer but it turned out it was play hunting, but this never happened. He doesn’t even go looking for his mystery girl in the end, the Grand Duke does which is pretty disappointing. It’s a shame too since going off the King’s dialogue about how he’s been evading mariage he could have been like the male version of Jasmine. A royal who’s being pushed to get married, even though he wants to find true love on his own time and just have some freedom. They did do a bit more with him in Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. They also did more with him in the live-action remake, expanding his and Cinderella’s relationship and giving him an actual name (Kit). But we’re focusing on the original, and it’s sad that he didn’t get more to him.

The King and Grand Duke are also comedic relief and overall pretty good ones. The King is loud, blusterous, and quick to anger. He’s not a bad man, after all the only reason he wants his son to get hitched is because he feels lonely and wants grandchildren. It’s kind of cute when you think about it, even if unfair to his own son. He can be very friendly, but as I said quickly to anger. After all, when the mystery girl got away, he outright attempted to /behead/ the Grand Duke until he told him about the slipper. In comparison, the Grand Duke is more timid, but quite sarcastic as well. Very much the straight man to the King’s blusterous personality. While very much afraid of the king (though not unwilling to backtalk him), up against anyone else he takes no crap from anyone. Just watch him as he tries to endure the Tremaines, it’s amazing how absolutely done he is with all of them, and he wins points for shutting up Lady Tremaine when Cinderella makes her way downstairs. A good man!

The Fairy Godmother is only in the film briefly, but she leaves a major impact. She is the first decent person to Cinderella in a long, /long/ time. She is very grandmotherly in her design, voice, and demeanor. She’s a little forgetful and scatterbrained, as she forgot where her wand was and it takes a good while for her to notice Cindy’s torn up dress. But she is a kindly old woman who was summoned by the hope remaining in Cinderella’s heart. She came at the girl’s darkest hour and gave her the one night that she had always dreamed of. She is voiced by Verna Felton, who was a pretty regular VA for Disney at the time. Though she often did much harsher characters such as The Matriarch in Dumbo and the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland. But she perfectly portrays the Godmother’s kindly grandmother persona. Her modern VA was Disney Legend Russi Taylor, who also took over Drizella, who sadly passed away last year. It is unknown who will do the Godmother in the future, but I have no doubt that she will emerge again one day

We now come to the Tremaines. First, the daughters. Drizella and Anastasia are ugly, loud, snooty, and mean to both Cinderella and each other. They argue frequently, outright hitting each other during their… ugh… we’ll call it a music lesson. They’re spoiled in the worst way, never being happy with what they have yet get angry if Cinderella dares wear the things that they outright discarded as trash. It’s clear that their mother raised them to be as horrid as her, though they’re nowhere near as calculating. She pretty much raised them to be her attack dogs against Cinderella as well as to use them to marry off and move up in the world. Their obnoxiousness is their only real character trait, though their character animation via Ollie Johnston is quite fun to watch. Anastasia would gain more depth in the two direct-to-video sequels at the very least, more or less also getting a redemption arc. She was also voiced previously by Lucille Bliss, who played the teacher in Invader Zim, and is now voiced by the legendary Tress Macneille.

Then there is Lady Tremaine. Ho boy, Lady Tremaine. If I had the time, I could do an entire essay on this woman alone. She is one of the most chilling, yet memorable Disney Villains despite being nothing but an old woman. Why? First, her voice. In the film, she is voiced by Eleanor Audley, which remember that name cause it’s gonna come back later in this series. She is able to keep the perfect balance of calm and methodical, yet sharp when necessary. Perfectly in control. Actually, that’s a great way to describe Lady Tremaine, in control. She knows what she wants and is willing to go to any length to get it. She carries herself with confidence and regality, very rarely losing her cool. She’s calculative and methodical and you never quite know what she’s going to do until she does it. But most of all, she is cruel and petty, especially towards Cinderella.

Unlike her obnoxious daughters, Tremaine’s abuse towards Cinderella is calm and subdued, preferring to use emotional abuse and manipulation. She has brow-beaten the poor girl so bad that she becomes obedient as soon as the old woman speaks up. Tremaine is jealous of Cinderella’s beauty and therefore tries to make the girl’s life as difficult as possible. She enjoys mistreating and controlling Cinderella, wearing a cold smirk any time that she ramps up the cruelty. Probably her cruelest act in the film is manipulating her own daughters into ripping Cinderella’s dress right off of her after she managed to get it on for the ball. Despite having agreed to let Cindy go to the ball if she got her work done, she ruined her chances anyway just because she could. She’s not only horrible to her stepdaughter but even to her own daughters with how they ultimately turned out and clearly only interested in marrying them off

What makes Tremaine scary though is because… well, compare her to The Queen/Hag and later villainess Maleficent. In the real world, you’re not likely to encounter an evil queen who uses witchcraft and turn herself into an old hag just to poison you. In the real world, you’re unlikely to encounter an evil fairy witch who can curse you to die and transform into a ferocious dragon. But running into a cruel, petty old woman who will abuse you due to jealousy and for her own enjoyment? Oh yes, that can and does happen. Lady Tremaine is real. She is a perfect depiction of an abusive stepparent.  Plus as I said before, Frank Thomas did an excellent job depicting her expressions as utterly chilling. I was afraid of her as a child, and I still am now. Even at the end after her daughters failed to get on the slipper, she breaks it just to keep Cinderella from achieving a life of happiness out of pure spite. On the upside, seeing her plans all fall apart and especially her face when Cinderella reveals the other slipper is deliciously satisfying. One of the greatest all-time Disney moments.

Well, that was a lot more than I thought. But with all of that out of the way, there’s only one more character to discuss. Strap yourself in folks, because I have been waiting /years/ for this.

Cinderella Analysis

As I said above, Cinderella was one of my favorite princesses as a child. She was beautiful, had an amazing singing voice, was kind, and I wanted to have my dreams come true just as she did. She is one of the most famous Disney characters by far. I remember her pretty much being the face of the Disney Princess line when I was a kid. Nowadays I’d argue that Rapunzel is more of the face (or if we wanna count Frozen, Elsa is) but that doesn’t mean that Cindy has faded out of the public eye. After all, it is her castle that stands as the main landmark at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. That alone will ensure that she never fades out of popular consciousness.

In return, however, Cinderella is probably the most criticized princess of the Classic Three. It’s mostly for the same reasons as those two. She was a damsel-in-distress. She was domestic and passive. She got together with a man at first sight. She needed others to save her. It’s all the same thing you hear about pre-The Little Mermaid, but since Cinderella is probably the most well-known, she’s the one who gets it levied against her the most. As I said in Snow White, there is some truth about this portrayal furthering the depiction of women as domestic/passive in film. But it truly baffles me as to why Cinderella is the one who gets this criticism the most. It really, really baffles me. I can somewhat get it with Snow White and I can get it with Aurora, but Cinderella? Ugh… no. Just… no.

First of all, let’s get this part out of the way. Cinderella is an abuse victim. I think that Cinderella is meant to be about 19 years old in the film. While we don’t know how old she was exactly when her father died, we see in the opening narration that she was still a child. A child. Let’s say that she was around nine years old. That would mean that she has been under Lady Tremaine’s thumb for ten years. A full decade. If you are under abuse for that long at any age, but especially ever since a child, then that is going to affect you. So Cinderella being passive? Yeah, that’s likely in part because of the abuse that she went through. She was conditioned to not fight back, or if she did she would pay the consequences. As great as imagining standing up and fighting against your abuser is,  it is unfortunately very rarely that simple especially when you are under years of psychological conditioning like Cinderella was.

But it is also unfair to say that Cinderella is blindly obedient and broken either. She isn’t. Cinderella is introduced as kind, cheerful, and playful when she teases her bird friends and gets ready for the day. Cinderella is a kind young woman, facing every day with a smile despite her treatment. The girl lives in an attic, yet she happily sings as she gets her day started. Cinderella’s defining trait is that she is a dreamer. As she herself says in the opening, her dreams are something that no one can control. Not her step-family. Not the clock telling her that it’s time to get on with a new day. In her dreams, she is able to do whatever she wants. It is her escape. The one thing that gets her through the day, hoping that one day the dreams that she wishes in her heart will come true.

This is what fuels Cinderella ahead. It is what allows her to remain kind. It is what allows her to be sympathetic to others. What shows this most is her treatment of the mice. She treats them as her friends, making them clothing, feeds them, and frees them from traps. This is important for what happens later, but we’ll get to that later. She is also kind to the other animals, such as the horse and to her dog Bruno. In fact, it’s pretty interesting when she scolds Bruno for wanting to chase Lucifer. She tells him that it’s bad, how he’ll lose his warm bed, and quote “you know the orders”. She expects Bruno to obey the same way that she must obey. Doing so otherwise will mean consequences such as losing one’s own bed. The only animal that Cinderella doesn’t get along with is Lucifer, who is also the only character she is willing to speak against. At one point she was even willing to smack him with her broom when he ruined the floor she just finished scrubbing. It makes sense since Lucifer not only goes out of his way to make things more difficult for her, but he can’t order her around or really do anything to her as Lady Tremaine can. So in a way, it’s one thing that she has some power over.

Still, the first act shows what Cinderella’s life is like. It doesn’t seem too bad at first glance. She seems happy and treats her morning more like an annoyance than anything. But once we meet the Tremaines, it becomes clear just how bad it is. Anastasia immediately accuses Cindy of planting a mouse under her cup on purpose and Cinderella gets no chance to defend herself, though she is able to make Lucifer free Gus. She’s then summoned into Lady Tremaine’s room, clearly uneasy. Whenever she tries to explain herself, Lady Tremaine snaps back at her, making her go silent. There is no arguing. Lady Tremaine likely knows that Cinderella did nothing wrong, but doesn’t care. Whatever makes the girl miserable works for her and gives her an excuse to pile on that misery. Thus she piles on the workload, even making Cinderella do things that she already did once over again. Cinderella is unable to do anything but listen to the commands.

Everything changes, however, when the invitation to the ball arrives. Now we go back to one of the criticisms against Cinderella. Many accuse her of only going to the ball to meet the prince and get married. Now I will go more into this later, but there’s a reason why I am bringing it up now. Cinderella never at any point time from this point until the search for the mystery girl starts, even so much as mentions the prince. The ones who want to go to get married are the Tremaines. The whole reason that they go is because of the royal command for every eligible maiden to attend. Lady Tremaine wants to marry off her daughters. The sisters obviously want to get hitched to a good-looking man of power like the prince. Cinderella though? She just wants to go to a fancy ball because she can. By royal command every maiden is to attend no matter their status, so a lowly servant girl like herself is allowed. She even points this out to her step-family in one of the few cases she does stand up to them. Not by getting angry or defensive, she just outright points out the fine print. But no, nothing about getting with a guy ever comes up until much, much later.

Lady Tremaine agrees that Cinderella can go if gets her work done and finds a dress. But she uses the first part of that deal to bombard Cinderella with orders to make her unable to accomplish the second half. Cinderella has the dress picked, one of her mother’s, but she has no time to mend it up. As Jaq points out to the other mice, the Tremaines are going to make her do everything to make her unable to get her dress. But this is where Cinderella’s previous kindness kicks in. It’s clear that the mice really care for her because of how she cares for them. As such, they decide to fix up the dress for her. Jaq and Gus outright risk their lives against Lucifer to get some discarded trimmings.

Sure Cindy ultimately didn’t mend the dress herself, but it shows how her kindness came back to reward her. Just look at how downcast she is when the carriage arrives. She realized far too late that her step-family was never going to give her the chance to go to the ball. She is saddened as she returns to her attic-dwelling, looking out at the castle from the window and trying to convince herself that the ball would have been boring anyway. It fails. She is standing in darkness until the room lights up via candlelight and the mice reveal the mended dress to her. You can just hear the glee and gratitude in her voice as she swings around the dress and is at a loss of words before thanking her friends. Her kindness was rewarded… but sadly, not for long.

We now come to what is by far the darkest scene in the movie. Cinderella comes down to the door, shocking her stepfamily that she actually got a dress. At first, Cinderella is elated that she can actually go… until Lady Tremaine begins to approach. The old woman doesn’t seem to be doing anything wrong, agreeing that Cindy kept her end of the deal and even compliments the dress. But then she points out the beads to Drizella, who previously discarded them. It provokes her and Anastasia into a bitter, angry frenzy. They outright rip the dress apart while Cinderella is still in it. It is disturbing, Cinderella unable to do anything as her dreams are literally ripped away from her bit by bit. By the end, Tremaine calmly calls her daughters away and bids Cinderella a good night, leaving the girl standing in a pile of rags.

This is the final straw for Cinderella. She runs out to the back garden and breaks down. After trying so hard for so long to keep her hopes up, she can’t. All that she wanted was to go to the ball. Not to get married, just to have one night where she could have a good time. That was it. But her stepfamily just couldn’t allow for even that and tore it all away from her. Can you blame her for crying after all that? After dealing with that kind of treatment since she was a little girl? I can’t blame her. Her friends can only watch in sympathy and sadness as she says that there’s no use in dreaming and that she can’t dream anymore. She has hit her breaking point, a far cry from the hopeful young dreamer she was at the start of the film.

But not all is lost. In her despair, Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother is summoned. So a big question I’ve seen some ask is how the Fairy Godmother was summoned to begin with? Well, it’s as she herself said, she couldn’t be there if Cinderella didn’t have hope in her heart still. She is essentially a manifestation of Cinderella’s hopes and dreams. If I had to guess with Cinderella reaching her breaking point and ready to give in to despair, the Fairy Godmother manifested because she now truly needed help. It was to restore her hopes and allow her to get to the ball after the chance was so cruelly ripped away from her. I know what some are going to say, once again Cinderella got something handed to her. But this is a case where Cinderella herself more or less summoned the one who would help her. Her kindness caused the mice to help her, now her hope summoned up her Fairy Godmother to help her. It’s not happening just because.

So The Fairy Godmother creates her carriage, makes her new dress, and gives her the glass slippers. But like all dreams, this can’t last forever. She has until midnight, after which the spell will be broken. Which is perfectly fine with Cinderella, she’s just grateful for what her Fairy Godmother has done for her. Seeing her smiling and hopeful again after the previous moment and her just receiving some motherly kindness from someone is just really nice to see. Thus, she is whisked away to the ball, and almost as quickly as she arrives, she catches the eye of The Prince himself. While Drizella and Anastasia are trying to get him to look at them, funny enough.

So let’s get back to the ‘Cindy only wanted a man!’ critique. As I already said, she never mentions a man until near the end. But here at the ball, it’s not even her who goes to The Prince. Heck later when midnight hits, it’s pretty clear that she didn’t even know that the guy she was dancing with was The Prince. No, it is Prince Charming who approaches her. We outright see him look up, notice her as she enters, and is stricken by her beauty. It is him who walks to her and presents himself to her, a major contrast to how all the other girls were going up to him with him clearly bored. So no, Cinderella never wanted to get a man. It all happened purely by chance, and again she didn’t even realize that he was The Prince until after the ball was long over.

Cinderella dances with the prince throughout the night, getting so caught up that she loses track of time until the clock goes off. Once again, the clock is telling her that it’s time to wake up from her dream. She flees, but loses one of her slippers along the way. Midway on the road home, the spell is broken and she is once more in her torn-up dress. She apologizes to her animal friends for losing track of time, but happily recalls the night. But the mice then point something out to her: her glass slipper is still on her foot. Now… why is that? Well what summoned the Fairy Godmother to begin with? Hope. It is my opinion that this is why the slippers didn’t disappear as well. Cindy’s hope kept them manifested, to the point that I don’t believe that her losing one happened by chance. It is the key to her having a chance at a better life. It slippped off her foot due to that, and the other one remained for the same reason. Cindy seems to think it’s the Fary Godmother’s doing as she thanks her, but the truth is it is herself who caused both of those.

Thus, we come to the next day. The Grand Duke is looking for the mystery girl, and Tremaine is ready to leap at the chance. At first, Cinderella is pretty much ready to resume her regular life now that she’s gotten the one night that she had wanted. But as Tremaine explains the new development to her daughters, Cinderella hears it. This is when she realizes that it was The Prince that she was dancing with. That it was her slipper that was found, which means that she’s the mystery girl. Which means that she’s the one who can fit it and thus she will become The Prince's bride. This is the point that she wanted to get married to a man. In the final fifteen or so minutes. But look as to why she wants to. This will absolutely ensure that she is able to have a better life than she has now, so can we blame her for being happy?

Cinderella is so elated that she outright ignores her stepsisters demands and starts to day-dreamingly go to her room to prepare for the Grand Duke’s arrival. But this turns out to be a mistake. Because of her elation, Lady Tremaine immediately puts the pieces together. Cinderella not only managed to defy her and go to the ball, but she is now in the way of her plans to marry her daughters off. If she is there when the Grand Duke arrives, then that’ll be it. She’ll fit the slipper, be taken to the palace, and will marry The Prince not long after. That is something that Lady Tremaine simply cannot allow. Not to mention that she can’t allow the girl to go unpunished for her defiance. Thus, she locks Cinderella in her room. To both keep her out of the way and to make sure that she can never leave.

So… it looks like that’s it. There is nothing that Cinderella can do at this point. She realizes that she’s once more going to be trapped in a cruel life and begs Tremaine to let her out before just breaking down. She had her chance once more, and once more her stepmother took it away. But once more, Jaq and Gus act to help their friend and manage to get the key. But of course Lucifer interferes, trapping both Gus and the key and Cinderella is now in a position where she can’t make him stop. All of her animal friends try to help, but it proves futile. That is, until Cinderella has a realization. There is someone who can chase off Lucifer. The same someone that she previously scolded because it would be going against orders; Bruno the Dog.

Remember when I pointed out how Cinderella got after Bruno dreaming of chasing Lucifer because he’d lose his home otherwise? Yeah, it comes back around here. She’s now close to getting out of her situation, so why not allow Bruno the same thing? She has her bird friends alert Bruno, and indeed the dog rushes in and causes the evil cat to jump from the window. I think it was supposed to be implied that this killed Lucifer, but we see in the later sequels that he survived. But with him out of the way, the mice slip Cinderella the key and she is able to get out and to the stairs just as the Grand Duke is beginning to walk out. And he’s clearly glad to see her to, outright making his way past Lady Tremaine and reminding her that he’s supposed to give every maiden a chance when she tries to ward him away,

But, of course, Tremaine can’t just accept defeat. She trips the earl and the slipper is shattered. It looks like once again, Cinderella’s hopes have been for naught. But this time, she doesn't cry. She doesn’t even get sad. Why? Simple, because it wasn’t for naught. She pulls out the other slipper, proving beyond doubt that she is the mystery girl. It was her hope that created the slippers. It was her hope that kept them manifested when the spell was broken. Now it is her hope that gave her the key to at long last break free from her stepfamily for good. She gets married to The Prince (we don’t know how long after, so there is a window open for those who want to get after her for marrying a guy she just met) and is whisked away to a better life. The wish that she made at last came true.

Cinderella is defined by hope, kindness, and dreams. It is these things that fuel her to continue on with her life. It is these things that allow her to remain a good person and not be broken by her stepmother’s attempts to humiliate and demean her. Even at her lowest moment, her hope couldn’t be truly broken. Sure in real life you’re not going to be able to magically summon a Fairy Godmother or be married into royalty because of a shoe. But this is NOT real life. This is a fairy tale. It is escapism. It doesn't have to adhere to reality exactly. Plus even then, there is something to be said about not giving up hope and remaining kind in the face of adversity. It is that lesson that I have carried with me since I was a child, to remain kind no matter what. I’ve had my own breakdowns, especially since it’s still 2020 at the time of this writing. But even so, I’ve tried to remain kind. Because Cinderella taught me to do so.

It is why I have never understood the hate against her, and never will. I love the modern princesses and yes, they did need to become more proactive and strong. But this does NOT make the first three bad. Especially not Cinderella. She is an abuse survivor. She is a dreamer. She is a young woman who only wanted to have some happiness in her life. Her kindness and hope was eventually rewarded, and in a way was granted to her by herself. The mice helped her with both her first dress and to escape the attic because she was kind to them. Bruno and the animals liked her because she was kind to them, so they repaid her. The Fairy Godmother manifested because Cinderella wanted to give up, but hope still remained in her heart and gave her the help she desperately needed. The glass slippers remained because of her hope, and became the keys to her achieving a better life. Sure she didn’t have to physically fight for it, but it doesn't change the fact that things happened, that others helped her because she was kind and hopeful. Because of herself.

The last thing to note is her voice actress, Ilene Woods. She was originally hired to do the singing for Cinderella, but after Walt heard her he cast her to also do the speaking lines. She did a beautiful job. She conveys Cinderella’s grace, kindness, and hopeful nature absolutely beautifully and her singing voice is outright angelic. Do you want to know a sad, yet beautiful story? Well at the end of her life, Ilene Woods had sadly been inflicted with Alzheimer. I think we all know how devastating that disease is. She was living in a nursing home, unable to recall anything. Reportedly, the nurses would often play A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes for her. Even though Ilene couldn’t recognize that it was herself singing, it was the one thing that could make her happy all the way up to her passing in 2010. Mind you that story is from Wikipedia /TV Tropes and I haven’t been able to find an actual source saying this, but I’ve never seen anyone contest if this was true. Either way, Ilene was and will always be the Cinderella, a legacy that the current actress Jennifer Hale is keeping alive and well today.

Final Thoughts

Cinderella will always be special to me. She’s not my overall favorite princess, we still have quite a while before we get to her. But she is firmly my second favorite. The film is outright my second favorite of all time (again, we’ll get to number one later). It’s the first movie that I remember seeing in my life. I would watch it for hours over and over again. I had dolls of her. I would dress up as her. The whole reason I wanted to go to Disney World was to meet her, and I did. The film looks beautiful. The music is beautiful. The characters are memorable. The story is an outright classic even before Disney adapted it. To quote Beauty and the Beast, it is a tale as old as time. Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking, but even after all these years, I love this movie just as much as I did when I was a little girl. Maybe even moreso now. It is a true Disney Masterpiece.

Disney was hoping for a miracle, and he got it. Cinderella was the biggest hit that they had had in a looong time. Audiences and critics loved it. It was the moment that Disney was back in business and able to return to feature film, launching them into the Silver Age of Animation. While his next film, Alice in Wonderland, didn’t go very well, both Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp helped keep the studio afloat. As the decade came to a close, the studio decided that it was time to release another fairy tale-inspired film. Would this one strike gold like the first two?
