Chapter 1; 2080
It had been ten years. Naturally, technology had moved forward, Lita could testify to that. By now One was 20, yet the government still kept her under heavy surveillance. Lita had made alterations to her DNA to keep her heart stable, but since mental stability was also partially genetic, the government didn't fully trust it. Lita was currently on her way to see One. Sure, she could have named the child anything else, but she struggled with names so she had picked the easiest one. One didn't seem to mind, then again, she thought it was normal to be kept under surveillance and she had never had much social contact besides Lita. Lita sighed as she readjusted her headscarf, a common sight nowadays, before swiping her pass through the device on the left of the plain, white door. She was greeted by an overjoyed woman "Hi mom!". One hugged the woman she knew as her mother, after all, the woman had created her. The room itself was simple. White walls, with colourful stickers pasted on from when One was around fifteen. There was a bed, with simple white sheets. The floor was made of dark wood, and a small, pink carpet laid in the middle. You also had a desk and a bookcase. There was a bathroom and a small garden attached, each on opposite sides of the main room. One herself was rather tall, almost unnatural, even. She had jet-black hair and eyes, her skin, however, was unnaturally pale. It wasn't from lack of sunlight, as Lita and One took a walk everyday under the artificial sky, which was designed to let sunlight through, although you'd never notice. One also tended to her garden whenever she could. Since it didn't limit her health, Lita had decided against altering it. "How have you been?" Lita gave one some affectionate pats on the shoulders. The woman in question gave a grin "Good! Mister van Eijk told me that I'll be allowed to have my own phone and laptop soon, and perhaps I'll be allowed to go outside on my own." Lita's heart made a small jump. Was the government finally starting to trust her? She really hoped so. "Perhaps you'll be allowed to live with me then." She made a mental note to ask her superiors. It was about time that One got integrated into society. It had already been ten years since she had first opened her eyes. That fact alone was outstanding to Lita. She had managed this, and this reality was like a dream that had gone on for too long. She had not expected this to go so well. Not to forget that another artificial human was already being made. The project was named Two, very original, she knew, but she decided she could as well keep going with the naming scheme. She was pulled from her thoughts when One dragged her to the garden. "You know that plant that refused to bloom?! It finally started blooming!". Her eyes twinkled with pure pride. Her garden was pretty much her life, therefore this was an amazing achievement. And indeed, the flowers were gorgeous, with layers and layers of petals, arranged in a symmetrical pattern. It was truly one of nature's most valued gifts. "The Eight Scholars." Lita gave an approving nod. The flowers reminded her of One. There was so much to her, all stacking up like the petals of the flower, making the whole a stunning beauty. One could only smile, her eyes gleaming with joy. She wasn't fazed by Lita spacing out, it happened rather often. "Since when have they been blooming?" Lita turned to face One. "Yesterday, I think. They were blooming when I woke up." One shrugged, a grin still on her face. Lita couldn't help but smile once more. Perhaps One could become a botanist. She seemed to have a love for plants. There were many more that had popped up as the climate changed, back when Lita was just born. Back then everything was chaos. Many had died, others emigrated to countries with more bearable climates. With many pieces of land now unusable many more died from famine, others died in fights over the left-over supplies. They eventually all gathered under one central government. Special groups had been sent out to salvage what they could, once they started rebuilding society, under which the scientific knowledge that had created One. The Great Change had been 25 years ago. The buildup had been there, but those in power favoured money over safety, wellbeing, and the preservation of a livable climate. Now money was no longer being used, but Lita had seen pictures. She wondered what life was like before humanity went to ruin. What did the cities look like? What food did they eat? There had been an abundance of supplies after all. Once again One pulled her out of her thoughts. "Mom! What were your parents like? Did they also have chocolate skin?" Lita shrugged "According to genetics, most likely." It was the truth, right? If she had to be honest, she could not remember. It was like a shadow, present, but an intangible image of oneself without detail. Her phone rang. She ignored it. Perhaps she should put it on silent whenever she visited One. This time was for her and One alone. She'd call back later. The two went out for their walk. This would be monotone, if it weren't for the small park in the center of the city. The rest consisted of white buildings, which hid the sky from view with the roof connecting all of them. This had been done to protect everyone from the weather. Lita had been told that if you stepped outside, you'd die pretty quickly. The park had been made to preserve plants used for medicine, however, most of the plants looked pretty as well, and since the government wanted to keep the morale high, they made a park. It was the only bit of colour in the black and white city. As the duo walked into the park Lita's phone rang once again. She sighed in annoyance, and answered the call. "What is it?" "Two has obtained a stable heartbeat and brain activity." Note
3 + 4 for Lascivious please!
3: What's your favorite line of narration?
This is two sentences sry but I’m really proud of this bit!
In this disembodied purgatory, thought was asdangerous as confession, with Lust picking apart his mind, anxiously grasping ontoany information Roy could give him. The more he knew, the more memories ofRoy’s he obtained, the more the distinction between man and monster began toblur, until eventually Roy’s soul, his individuality, already worn and frayed, would cease to exist and Lust would have unlimited access to the fruits of acareer built on secrets.
4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?
Okay I’m not even going to pretend that wanting to include this bit wasn’t a major reason I wrote this fic in the first place.
Rebecca whistledsoftly. “I suppose you could say Roy Mustang has truly become Roy Mustbang.”
“Roy Lustang, if youwill,” Jean added.
