Jamil with a Parrot Beastwoman āFriendā š¦šŗš
(I got the art commissioned for my oc and she turned out super pretty š„ŗāØ)
Note: VERY self indulgent (sorta oc x canon). I came up with a waifu-fied Iago (called her Imani) a few months ago for funā¦. and here I am now ehe.Ā If someone else thinks this is mildly interesting, leaving a like would be appreciated!
whether or not he will admit it, Imani (the hot headed, easy to fluster and bratty) parrot beastwoman has been a huge help to JamilĀ
Indebted to him, she has been sneaking in on campus to help him with whatever task he has for her
A feeling of relief washes over Jamil as soon as he sees her fly through his roomās window.Ā The determined fiery look in her eyes to make him sparks a sort of pride in his chest.
He leaves some cleaning up and laundry duties to her. It gives him some extra time to catch up on studying, as well as assignments, so he can sleep early
Jamil āaccidentallyā slipped up to Najma about Imani (asking for advice?)Ā
Jamil has been gifted gems and jewellery by Imani (from treasure hunts) on a couple of occasions. The first time he was given a gift, he wasnāt sure how to respond! Usually, itās Kalim receiving expensive goods
Jamil found a parrot plush at Samās store, and compares her to it (just to see her reaction)Ā
He enjoys making her mad (he finds it cute, but definitely wonāt admit it)Ā
Teases her every opportunity he gets
For some reason, she hates biscuits and crackers. Jamil oftens threatens (in a joking manner) her with them
He trusts her enough to have serious heart-to-heart conversations: such as venting his frustrations and fears of his future being spent as nothing but a servant
As seen during the glorious masquerade event, Jamil has quite the devious mind. While venting to her, Jamil has shown this side of his personality a few times.Ā
Imani has indulged in her mischevious side because of thisĀ
Imani doesnāt really know how to help except promising to stick with himĀ
Jamil appreciates her loyalty and dedication. He sees through her clearly and knows that she is a loyal friend who truly cares about him. The last thing he would want to do is lose her.
The two love dancing! They take turn teaching each other movesĀ
Imani absolutely loves watching Jamil dance. She thinks heās the most graceful, expressive and well choreographed one ever. She has secretly tried doing his moves in private
If heās that tired, Jamil will ask Imani to brush his hair. For some reason, this makes her really flustered (preening)
When it comes to cooking, Jamil often invites her to help him out in the kitchen. Itās through this he introduces her to the foods of his home.Ā
He packs her extra as a small thank youĀ
she loves his cooking
he wishes he could keep her around, just like how the great Sorcerer of the Sand kept a parrot on his shoulder

Virginia's governor digs an even deeper hole with his 'indentured servants' comparison
Governor Ralph Northam has dug himself so far into a hole I'm not sure who can rescue him.
The Virginia governor is already under pressure to resign after a photo emerged of his yearbook page featuring two people, one in blackface and one dressed as a Ku Klux Klan member. The governor claimed he's not either of the people in that photo, but then admitted he once put shoe polish on his face for a Michael Jackson costume.Ā
Northam, who has so far resisted calls to resign, stirred up controversy on CBS This Morning Sunday after he initially referred to the Africans who landed on Virginia's shores hundreds of years ago as "indentured servants."

"We are now at the 400-year anniversary ā just 90 miles from here in 1619. The first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Old Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe, and while ā " Northam said on the show.
"Also known as slavery," Gayle King said, interrupting him.
"Yes," Northam conceded.

Were Northam not in the situation he's in, this moment might have gone by unnoticed. As it is, however, the governor came under fire for seemingly minimizing this grotesque chapter of Virginia history:
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam called Black Americans who were forcefully enslaved āindentured servantsā and Gayle King had to correct him. The fact that this man was not immediately removed from office after photos of him wearing Blackface and klan attire surfaced, is beyond me pic.twitter.com/rILtVbuLJE

What can you do with a history degree? A better job than Governor Northam.
ā And no I do not yield. Not one second to you. (@GilmoreGlenda) February 10, 2019
STOP IT. Resign NOW. You are incapable of leading a state when you canāt call slavery slavery. Black people were ENSLAVED. This is American History 101. https://t.co/4aoZb9CHsk

My God, it just gets worse & worse.š Asked about this week in VA, Northam responds by referring to kidnapped, enslaved, & trafficked Africans as āindentured servants.āš¤¦š½āāļø Thank you @GayleKing for shutting that downpic.twitter.com/PpPm0xceua

INDENTURED SERVANTS FROM AFRICA. Iām going back to bed
ā Imani Gandy (@AngryBlackLady) February 10, 2019
Virginia deserves a governor that knows the folks who were stolen from their land & brought to present day Virginia on cargo ships in 1619 were not "indentured servants" they were mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, leaders, warriors, elders who were captured & enslaved. SIGH
ā Symone D. Sanders (@SymoneDSanders) February 10, 2019
This a classic old white Virginia guy thing to believe ā the lore is that they were indentured servants, but there are no records suggesting that. Gets back to whether he is the best person to lead "racial healing." https://t.co/nTiKM3cC9w

.@GayleKing showing exactly how you interview someone. What an incredible moment. https://t.co/puhwsrESKK
ā Yamiche Alcindor (@Yamiche) February 10, 2019
To add a little context, as recently as the 80s/early-90s, rural Virginia public education re: VAās history leaned heavily on the āindentured servantā narrative. I had a teacher claim VA had only a few slaves (vs other states) & a bunch of folks happily working towards freedom
ā michael raumer (@mindpivot) February 10, 2019
Other journalists and critics weren't so sure that Northam committed a grand gaffe on Sunday (though no one disputes how much trouble he's created for himself generally).Ā
Northam is in enough trouble but this isnāt part of it. The early black arrivals in the British North American colonies, and likely those at Jamestown, were often given the status of indentured servants. The slave system took time to evolve in the 17th century. @GayleKing https://t.co/zfGNGkQl5x
ā jelani cobb (@jelani9) February 10, 2019
Iāll be clear about what I mean. Northam is actually correct about indentured servants arriving in 1619. I am happy that he is learning. He needs to grasp the history. But if he stays, what policies will he enact? Virginians need him to fight systemic racism, not pass an AP exam.
ā Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) February 10, 2019
No, theyāre not the same thing. But I believe the first Africans brought to the colonies were given the status of indentured servants. The system later became slavery. Northamās problem isnāt this statement.
ā Matthew Rosenberg (@AllMattNYT) February 10, 2019
Approximately 47 percent of Virginians believe Northam should step down, according to a new poll Ā conducted by The Washington Post-Schar School.
Northam has pledged to remain in office despite public pressure.
