In the beginning, our team was working on an idea to create a memory enhancement application, that would help people memorize things effortlessly. Something similar to the methods of passive haptic learning. Although the idea and the application itself turned out to be quite intricate, we still decided to pursue it.In July 2018, Zviad Sichinava, currently the CTO of the company, developed the first prototype of STACK as a “TweetDeck for web-applications” as his personal side project. After a month of receiving inspiring user feedback and having discovered a hidden pain on the market, Ziko suggested us to switch to the new idea and the team decided to grow a company around STACK.At that time from our team of four, 3 lived in the Netherlands and one in Georgia. In the Netherlands, 2 lived in Maastricht and 1 in Utrecht. As you can guess our communication was mainly online, which had a lot of limitations. All of us were working half time mostly after work for several hours and on weekends, mainly managing our tasks online. Writing code in that mode was quite tough, let alone developing business and running a startup. Soon we realized that this method of working was not delivering any results. And we had to come up with some sort of solution, that would streamline our work process. And that was so-called Weekend Working Retreats. We decided to forget about spending weekends with our family, but instead went to the place of one of us on Friday evening, and spend weekend days and nights together, working 16 hours per day. This gave us a minimum of an additional 30 hours per person per week spent on Stack. And things started to change.Pretty soon we saw the first tangible results. In December 2018 Stack was selected as a Top Pick startup by Tech Crunch. Throughout the year, we have also exhibited it at some of the most important tech-conferences in Europe like TNW, EU Startup Summit, Pirate Summit, and was named one of the top 20 startups of the year by StartupGrind. We also won a matching grant by Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency and The World Bank. We have contracted Cambridge Innovation Center Rotterdam and Firmhouse, that is one of the most reputable Dutch startup mentorship company, providing us with coaching and legal support. And last but not least, we have won €100k Euro investment (with an extra €900k Euro possible follow-up investment) in a very competitive selection process with accelerator 360Lab which is based in Austria and has an office in Silicon Valley, allowing all of us to move full time on Stack. In short, yes, working remotely is possible, but in our case, it started to deliver serious results only after we made a small change in our work ethic - started doing weekend working retreats. And that got us to where we are now, as we grew rapidly from 4 part-time to 8 full-time employees, allowing us to speed up the process of changing the way how people interact with the internet.
