“Adjusting the Moon (The right to non-imperative clarities): Waxing” (2019–20) is from @fireleibaez 'to breathe full and free,' launching tomorrow, Saturday, December 17 at 3PM at @jamescohangallery In her interview with the artist, @thelmagolden asks Báez how she navigates daily life. Báez responds: "Mostly just with curiosity. Knowing that I don't know certain kinds of things has been the main anchor. So, starting with a presumption that I am not the center and that I don't know, how do I then make sense of that? How do I navigate in a way that puts me in flow with the world around me?" Edited by @dlouisnorr Designed by @mikomcginty Published by @gregoryrmiller Text by @carlaacevedoyates @markgodfrey1973 & @ellerustle Interviews by @thelmagolden & @curator_on_the_run More info via linkinbio. #fireleibaez #fireleibaezbook #fireleibaeztobreathefullandfree #fireleibaezadjustingthemoon #adjustingthemoon https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPh5pIJZKg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reposted from @jamescohangallery:
In Untitled (Les tables de geographie reduites en un jeu de cartes), Firelei Báez has conjured a stampede of horses in various states of abstraction. Like a Rorschach, the more one gazes into the alchemical pours of paint, the more horses become apparent. For Báez, pours are markers of time and space; a doorway into her own experiences. This painting was begun during her residency at the American Academy in Rome, where Báez encountered many heraldic sculptures and paintings of horses. Unlike the images Báez encountered in Rome, these wildly rendered horses are not agents of battle or royal conquest, instead they are unbridled and free.
.
Beneath this dynamic painting is a rare geographic set of 52 playing cards game. developed by Pierre Duval in 1688. The broadside is dedicated to the Grand Dauphin (1661-1711), the son of King Louis XIV (1638-1715), and decorated with a royal coat of arms. The cards include inset maps of Africa, America, Europe, Asia, each represented by a playing card suit; clubs, spades, hearts and diamonds. The face cards contain a medallion portrait of a different leader for each continent, providing information, some reverent and others as caricature, on the countries represented. In this painting, Báez responds to the gamifying of colonial conquest, releasing nature from the arrogant grasp of man.
.
See Americananana, an exhibition of new paintings by Firelei Báez, on view at our 48 Walker Street gallery through December 21. Plan your visit or explore the exhibition online via link in bio.

For #WomensHistoryMonth we’re highlighting Firelei Báez’s “Ciguapa Antellana, me llamo sueño de la madrugada. (who more sci-fi than us)” (2018) at the 163 St-Amsterdam Ave (C) station, where the larger than life ciguapas (powerful convention-breaking feminine figures from Dominican folklore) immersed in tropical greenery intertwined with multicultural healing imagery, join passengers on the daily commute. Báez reworks diasporic history in her explorations of feminine mythology and artifacts overlaid onto large-scale maps and documents in her new exhibition at James Cohan Gallery, open through April 25th.

@fireleibaez #FireleiBaez @jamescohangallery "A Drexcyen Chronocommons (To win the war you fought it sideways)," an exhibition of new work by #FireleiBáez. Acknowledging the reciprocal nature of migration as a non-linear course of movement, Báez creates sites of connectivity, where overlapping histories and modes of understanding coexist. For "A Drexcyen Chronocommons (To win the war you fought it sideways)," the artist has created an immersive installation in the main gallery that spreads into the reception area. The space is cocooned in hand-perforated blue tarp—often used for temporary shelter, and thus a symbol of both disaster and refuge—casting light onto material patterned with black diasporic symbols of nurturing and resistance. Overhead is a geo-specific map of the stars as they appeared in the night sky at the onset of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804). A successful uprising led by self-liberated enslaved people against the French colonial government in Saint-Domingue, the Haitian Revolution was an early precursor to abolition movements internationally and had an indelible—if often unacknowledged—impact on the ideological and geopolitical landscape of the 19th century world. The installation’s oceanic quality suggests the broader history of black diaspora and the Middle Passage, in relationship to Glissant’s theory of the ocean as a connector and a repository of physical memory. . . Detail: FIRELEI BÁEZ, "A Drexcyen chronocommons (To win the war you fought it sideways)," 2019. Two paintings, hand-painted wooden frame, perforated tarp, printed mesh, handmade paper over found objects, plants, books, Oman incense, palo santo. . . . . #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #installation #drexcyen #drexciya #jamescohangallery #lowereastside #artcollector #artadvisor #joakimvonditmar (at James Cohan Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw5rdD7lZf5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=b7bse29dw7ee

“Chrono-DREAMer” (2019) is from @fireleibaez 'to breathe full and free,' the first comprehensive monograph on the artist, launching tomorrow, Saturday, December 17 at 3PM at @jamescohangallery In his essay on 'The Map Painting,' Mark Godfrey quotes the artist: "I grew up hearing stories of Lilith-like wild women from the forest, Ciguapas, told to me as a warning: you can’t be too wild, too much of nature, don’t be too independent. Everything that’s inscribed onto that figure becomes the antithesis of ideal femininity. And then as a kid I’d think, 'There’s so much freedom in that, why would I not want to be that? Why would I not want to be untraceable and fearless?'" Edited by @dlouisnorr Designed by @mikomcginty Published by @gregoryrmiller Text by @carlaacevedoyates @markgodfrey1973 & @ellerustle Interviews by @thelmagolden & @curator_on_the_run More info via linkinbio. #fireleibaez #fireleibaezbook #fireleibaeztobreathefullandfree #fireleibaezchronodreamer #chronodreamer https://www.instagram.com/p/CmPTULApxCI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
