Tonight, in yet another heartbreaking turn of events that seem to rock the firefighting world during fire season, we learned of the tragic death of a volunteer firefighter from the NSW Rural Fire Service, who was fighting a fire at Stanford Merthyr near Cessnock. To our counterparts in the NSW Rural Fire Service, to the friends and family of our dear departed comrade, and to his fellow crew members, we extend to you, on behalf of not only the crew at 312 Gulgong, but the whole of Fire & Rescue NSW, our sincerest of condolences. In times gone by where we have lost firefighters of our own, you have stood behind us and given us strength when we needed it most, and now it's our turn to do the same in return. May you rest in peace, our dear friend, and while time will never fill the void, we certainly hope it will help all of you come to some level of peace, knowing what a wonderful contribution this man made to his community and the state of New South Wales. We are forever indebted to him for paying the ultimate price in the line of duty. Officially receiving the keys to our Mercedes Benz Class 2 Atego fire appliance a few months ago. The state of the art, $300,000 fire appliance gives firefighters a whole range of new capabilities and affords greater protection to the local communities of Mudgee and Gulgong.
