I think the reason why "Fire Emblem" is the weird kid at the nintendo franchies table is because they don't really have a main charcter throughout their series.

Like, Legend of Zelda has Link, Mario Mario, Kirby Kirby, Pikmin the Pikmin/Olimar etc.

A few exptions that could be said is like, Xenoblade. But seeing as they have 3 games so they can just pick any MC they want for the time being to rep it.

Meanwhile the most noteable FE guy is Marth from number of apparances, but if you remove remakes that's like, two games. Even then, he was more in JP only games.

Other people who could have became the face of FE as the flagship mascot could have been

-Lyn: One of the most popular girls in FE. Was from the first US release of the game as a main lord. She most likely can't because she came at an akward time in gaming and would be seen as "wifu bait" to a lot of annoying people.

-Ike: One of the most popular lords in FE. a HUGE fan favorite and even cult following in Smash Bros (Like Smash HATES FE, but they chill with Ike. Because We Like ike). Most likly why he can't be the icon is Sales numbers. Love the Tellious saga but I'll be real, I did not contribute to the sales figure like most of you and played it years later. Also it's heavily implied through writing and breaking of story conventions that he's Gay/Ace/demi. And while Nintndo's super mario said "Gay people cool" it's a Multi billion dollar company so I don't think they'll want that.

-Chrom: For the 3DS people, Chrom is the most memeorible lord out of the bunch. Was the face of the game for a while, sorry lucina and robin fans, but chrom's popularity was bigger at the time of the game. Most likely why he can't be. well. it's Chrom and people's opions changed over time.

-Edelgard: Switch girlies, this one is for you. WE know you love badass women who break so many ethics we make conventions after it. There isn't really much reason to explain the why she can, but the reasons why she can't are kinda lame. Like Ike, she's outright shown being bisexual. And you can't really market that in some places. Plus, to say this the least. She is one of the most divisive FE characters because of how much Nuance is in 3 houses. Love or hate her, she brings out WAY to much from people to be a masctor charcter (Won't stop the FEH alts though). Plus, She's like tied to the other 2 lords that it's like the contract for Who Framed Rogger Rabbit saying "Bugs bunny and Mickey Mouse must be on screen for the same amount of time. Donald Duck and Daffy Duck (last names unrealated) must be on screen for the same amount of time."

-Ephram: he's here as the sacred stones rep. Reson why he can't. he's from sacred stones. that's a cult following in the FE community, sorry but he's not mascotting anything.

-Celica: With her apparance and precness in Engage, a good argument could be made for her. She's a really well written charcter but comes back to the issue of the amount of peopel who've played her game.

-Alfonse: GOTCHA GAME BABY ITS THE GOTCHA GAME GUY HE PROTAGNIST AND GAMBLGIN GOOD

-Veronica: The real rep from FEH. She is a very interesting character that takes up a lot of the story spot light with her growth into learning empathy and understanding. She isn't very static compared to Sherna (She did't even chage after learning she could have been an orphan swapped years ago into the role o a princess after a magical fairy land adventure. This HAPPENED IN BOOK 4. THE FUCK YOU MEAN SHE BARELY CHANGED.) and Alfonse (He changes but, not as much.). Plus she does have more unquie abilities compared to most of FE Cast which is good for a flagship charcter. Really the only reason she did't become FE's mascot and just FEH's is because, it's a gotcha game charcter. people shit on those ALL the time.

Anyway, next CYL they should make all characters votable again and say "Whoever wins the most popular vote will be the Mascot for Fire Emblem until the next game"

Happy Halloween! :D a Halloween Town Ienzo for your viewing pleasure!

I was able to do art for the first time in years recently, and I absolutely WENT OFF! The muses put me in a headlock and didn't let me go until they were satisfied, so this boi got done just in time for Halloween!

The amount of detail i put into this guy is INSANE! But the glazing and light filters messed up the small details that were only really visible anyway at 800% zoom, so i'll be including those under the cut.

Embroidery

Almost every embroidered symbol is unique, only mirrored on the other side of the coat. From top to bottom: the Nobody symbol, the Heartless symbol, a symbol found in the old mansion in Traverse down combining the fleur-de-lis heart and a crown, the symbol of Ansem the Wise, the Kingdom Hearts symbol, a stylized rose, an eight pointed star, the player pin from The World Ends With you and the one from the sequel, a symbol found in Scala ad Caelum, a rounded star, a book, scales of justice, a beaker, Sephiroth's symbol with the wing inside the meteor, Shinra's logo, the buster sword from Final Fantasy 7, a chocobo, a cactuar, a moogle, fleur-de-lis, Red XIII, the Unversed symbol, Nobody symbol, Heartless symbol, Kingdom Hearts symbol, Roxas’ symbol, Eraqus’ symbol, numbers 1-14 in roman numerals.

The general mirroring stops here, and the symbols on the right are: a sun, moon, pentacle, meteor, hidden Mickey/lucky emblem, demon and angel wings on a heartless symbol representing Riku, sea salt ice cream and a thalassa shell for Xion, and Roxas’ symbol and a cut-off Oathkeeper keyblade.

On the inside of the coat’s embroidery are funny easter eggs to fill out the space because I ran out of ideas, from right to left: Sans, Loss.jpg, Amogus, Anarchy symbol, the cool S, the symbol for pi, Bill Cipher, Kirby, Ali from “Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun”, Elmo, a rat, a bat, the Palestinian flag and a watermelon (free Palestine!), two band-aids, the Pokémon type symbols for ghost psychic and dark-types, and the Genshin Impact element icons in order as they appear on the loading screen.

I'm gonna play most FE games in the series as my main way to cope through tough times. I have a month long winter break, and only have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays next semester. From Binding Blade until Engage, those games will be blind so that'll be exciting!

I'll do my best to post thoughts about things I found fun or worthwhile during each game.

Not playing the 3DS games because my 3DS is dying after a decade, and not playing New Mystery because I don't have enough storage for another emulator at the moment. Probably gonna enable Elite mode for Thracia as well for both playthroughs, but I'll get there when I get there.

Tagged by @traveleorzea ! Thanks, friend! :D Last Song: The Mission Impossible Theme, the original and also the trailer theme from Final Reckoning. The latter hits me in the gut because the trailer theme's skillful arrangement of the iconic composition really sings, "We have come so far, so please stay with us unto the end, whatever it may chance to bring." Dead Reckoning made me thrill so hard, and laugh so hard, and cry, and yell...I remember running out of the theater, I was so amazed, so excited that movies today could still carry such deep themes with a character written and acted like Ethan Hunt in Dead Reckoning. I am beyond excited for the next part...and what looks like the finale of Ethan Hunt's impossible missions. I am so ready for Final Reckoning to do the same to me: make me thrill, and laugh, and cry, and yell. I can tell from the trailer that the story is not holding back. I can already sense some of the scenes that will happen, heartwrenching though they may be. And I'm so ready to go on this journey, whatever is ahead. I can hardly wait for May. Favorite Color: Rapid Blue in motorsports terms aka Champion's Blue in Zelda terms. 🔥 Last Book: What was the last book that I finished...? I don't know. But I'm currently in the middle of reading Darkblade Assassin by Andy Peloquin, which is quite fun! Imagine Assassin's Creed meets Jeritza von Hrym meets Castlevania, question mark on that last one because I'm still learning the mystery. I'm so invested. Last Movie x 2 ⤵️ Last good one: Last Breath. Loved the suspense. Loved the actual underwater cinematography. Very little use of CGI! Simu Liu being a grumpy character was entertaining after seeing him be goofy in other movies previously. Last bad one: Borderlands. Specifically to analyze what made it fall flat. It certainly did. The costume design and makeup was good though...makes me sad so much work was put into a movie that was so empty when it had so much narrative potential. It wasn't even a movie so bad that it was fun...it was just...hollow. It had some really cool moments, but then it downplayed what narrative weight it had, and therefore even the few cool moments lost their spark. I don't know how it executed this so...tremendously. But it was definitely fun to watch with a friend and make commentary over. Hehe. Last TV Show: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds...watched the first episode...sighed over the writing that was so determined to dump exposition instead of showing story. Sweet / Spicy / Savory: TRIPLE THREAT. I love things that are flavored with oomph. Last Thing I Searched for Online: These FE Heroes alts I love themmmmmmmmmmmm Look at her jumping rope with the flaming Sword of the Creator, what a silly goose. She contrasts his serious, sensible battle pose perfectly. And she finally gets black armor????? I made her a Dark Knight in my Crimson Flower playthrough so I screamed when I saw her Resplendent Design. It's about TIME SHE GOT TO LOOK COOL WITH DARK ARMOR TO CONTRAST HER FLAMES

Current Obsession: Fire Emblem. Not even one game, I've been Nerding out about ALL OF IT. There's so much care and passion poured into this franchise and Engage in particular is a testament to that. Fire Emblem balances a wacky wild multiverse but it makes it fun rather than tiresome (looking at you for the latter, MCU) through Heroes and Engage, and it just feels like a franchise that's celebrating being alive. Which, considering Awakening was supposed to be its last hurrah, is so beautiful to me. Fire Emblem is always about war and death but within those two things there always brims life and hope—just look to Marth, if you do not believe me—and the franchise's triumphant resurrection after the fittingly named Awakening that was supposed to end it all but only began a new birth of stories is a fourth-wall-breaking phenomenon that only upholds that very wonder, and the way the Emblems kindly speak to and exhort the young fighters in Engage shows how much the franchise takes its lifegiving impact on the real world seriously and in this essay I will— Looking Forward To: Big bang projects taking off. Spring and the flowers it brings. Motorcycles and sportscars emerging from hibernation once again. Meeting a long-ago friend for coffee. Meeting a not-so-long-ago friend to chat for hours once again. ;) More brainstorming and daydreaming an epic storyworld with my brother. So much. There is so much I am looking forward to. This world is crazy, and dark, and sad, and yet...there is so much I am looking forward to, all the same. I always like to add this one to this tag game as well, whenever I get a chance. Things I am Thankful For: My Father's provision when things look bleak. Bumblebee and what he means to me. A name so familiar, heard after so long. @mailrebel . Owl City. Sequels to RPGs and how they handle progression

One of the most story-rich, narrative-heavy genres in gaming. The kind of games that don't leave many stones unturned, trying to tell full, complete stories with the lore of the setting explored to the last letter. As well as a definitive ending waiting for player, after they defeat a dark deity, or a guy trying to become one, or just a guy who's a huge asshole. Endings that give the world and it's characters a happy conclusion. But what about games that just... don't do that? Games that, while giving you a complete story, still leave out many secrets, red herrings and unresolved plotlines? Games that are made with the intent of following themselves up with a part 2? How do they handle game-to-game character progression? All this growth the player has built up over the course of their long journey?

Game sequels are usually completely different worlds with different mechanics, and even if they're set in the same world and star the same characters, the different mechanics can require character progression to be reset, leading to funny explanations (if any) like Dante selling his weapons to pay rent, or Adol Christin losing his stuff because of constant shipwrecks. RPGs are in the same boat (no shipwrecks here). These game sequels don't interact with their predecessors whatsoever because of that, aside from maybe giving you extra goodies if they detect save data. And even sequels that ARE direct continuations to previous games don't interact with prequels for various reasons. Such as, like mentioned above, having completely different game mechanics, a brand new cast of characters (who would naturally have to start from 0), and/or setting the sequel years after part 1, aging the old cast and effectively "rusting" them. For example, Final Fantasy X-2, despite starring characters from the original FFX, has no data transfers whatsoever, due to different game mechanics. But there are outliers, and there have been different ways sequels have interacted with their prequels, so let's look at a few examples.

Now, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn is your typical case of a RPG sequel. Brand new cast of characters, set years apart from Path of Radiance (part 1 of the story), and also released on a different platform! Despite that, through the usage of GameCube memory card slots present on most Wii models, the game allows you to transfer your clear data of Path of Radiance which can affect various functions in your Radiant Dawn playthrough. For the most part, save transferring will affect characters from the first game in a minor way, due to those characters appearing much later in the story. Transferring will only give +2 to the stats a character has capped by the time they hit Level 20 on their promoted class, with a few exceptions to certain characters. One such character being Sothe, a sort of guardian figure to Radiant Dawn's new main cast, and as such he is present from the very start. In his case, his Level 20 stats by the end of Path of Radiance will carry over directly to Radiant Dawn, overwriting his base stats that he would have without save transfer, even if some stats are lower than his base stats. Interestingly enough, the other Fire Emblem sequel game(s), Mystery of the Emblem and it's DS remake don't have any interactivity with their Book 1s. The only difference being that in Mystery of the Emblem SNES, Marth gets a special icon next to his name for just one chapter. This type of data transfer, fully carrying over character levels, is very rare in RPGs, and there's only one RPG series I can think of that does this.

The Trails series, or simply Kiseki, is a very unique series, due to it's 12 and counting games all being set in one, continuous timeline, happening one after another, with some games even happening at the same time as each other. This is because the series is cleanly split into different story arcs, each arc set in a separate in-universe country, so even here we run into the case of new games starring new casts. But the games within those arcs have interesting approaches to save transfers.

For example; Trails in the Sky SC and Trails to Azure, sequels to Trails in the Sky and Trails from Zero respectively, allow you to fully transfer the stats and levels of protagonists Estelle and Lloyd, allowing both to start at a higher level than they would otherwise, as well as having alternate versions of certain scenes, affected by how much side content you did in the prequels. Beyond those two games, a constant between all Trails sequels is that characters retain all of their abilities and the level cap is raised, due to the sequels having a much higher starting level for progression consistency. Characters will get upgrades to their old abilities on top of new ones, and if part 1's level cap was 50, in part 2 it would be raised to 100, with the characters' starting level being above 50. And that's very cool. Not a lot of games care about character progression from previous games and yet here's a series of RPGs that put care and attention to their stories so much that they even maintain character progression consistency.

Now for something completely different, with the way the data is transferred being the unique part.

Two GBA games! But how is that possible? Save data is saved on the carts, not on the system itself! Here the developers used the ol' reliable method of passwords, with password length determining what you get to transfer over.

Short "bronze" passwords only transfer custom character names and certain event flags. Moderate "silver" passwords transfer full character stats from the original Golden Sun, as well as bronze transfers. And now the fun, stupidly long, 260-character "golden" passwords, which on top of previous bonuses, also transfer every item the party members had in their inventory by the end of the game, including exclusive items not present in Golden Sun Lost Age. A huge reward for the patient gamer who managed to put in all 260 characters correctly.

Or, y'know, you could just transfer over through the Link Cable, like a chump.

These were some of the examples of how sequels to RPGs handled character progression, if they bothered to at all. While it is a bit of a bummer that more games don't do this, it's understandable why sequels ultimately decide to separate themselves from their predecessors, even if they are direct continuations. But that's a topic for another day.

Like, listen. Listen, okay. The moment I learned they were making Galadriel's character revolve around needless revenge over a man (her brother who is currently happily traipsing across Valinor because that's how death works for elves) I was already mad enough to never touch RoP with a ten foot pole

But this? Taking one of her most iconic lines and attributing it to Sauron? I am livid.

The real Galadriel, the book Galadriel, was always an ambitious woman. She left Valinor to rule a realm of her own, to shape a land the way she thought right. She watched her male relatives do shit and was like "I can do better" and that's what she did

She was driven, intelligent and gifted, she was one of the greatest things that ever happened to the elves, and it all came from herself.

But now they changed her story. This Galadriel isn't traveling Middle-earth to find a place for herself, she's traveling it to avenge a man who doesn't need avenging. And then Sauron pops up and tells her she could be a queen "stronger than the foundations of the earth"? The line she originally said about herself?

The way this is all set up makes it look like a man planted the idea in her that she could be a queen, a man tempted her into becoming a queen, and then continued to tempt her until she refused the ring.

Her whole thing in the books was overcoming the temptation of power and choosing what was right and good. But it wasn't the ring that she needed to beat, she needed to overcome the desires and ambitions inside herself that the ring was using against her

She was her own greatest enemy and she won.

But now they made it all revolve around a man. A man gave her the idea, a man tried to tempt her, a man is who she quotes when she's overcoming temptation...

Do I really need to spell out why the story of a woman whose biggest enemy is herself being changed to so heavily focus on a man's effect is bad? Do I really??

The little "brgh" sound the cat makes sometimes when you jump, the way it just instantly drops when B-12 puts the little backpack on it and then continues to crawl across the ground like a dramatic little shit, the button prompt to push stuff off shelves for absolutely no reason except chaos, the quick little tap tap tap of the paw when it inspects something, how it just SLAPS the first two robots it meets (the dying one at the beginning and B-12 after booting it up), the way it licks its lips after hissing...

These people really paid a shit ton of attention to how cats work and it's given us an extremely realistic little guy that I will love with my whole heart until the day I die

I got the book A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games about a week ago. It's a massive publication (seriously, it weighs over 2 kgs and it's the thickest book in our shelf) covering the history of the JRPG genre. 

The Bitmap Books published hardback has 652 pages shedding light on both obscure and more famous titles from 1982 to 2020. In addition to featuring singular games, game series and JRPG subgenres, the guide also gives some insight into what kind of obstacles have to be overcome in order to localize Japanese games into English. 

Just to list a few of the iconic series that make an appearance in the book: Atelier, Breath of Fire, Dragon Quest, Etrian Odyssey, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Kingdom Hearts, Megami Tensei, Mystery Dungeon, Paper Mario, Persona, Pokémon, Star Ocean, Tales of, Trails, SaGa, Sakura Wars, Wild Arms, Xenoblade. 

There’s a lot of interesting info about these games and many more, including ones that were never published outside Japan.

An Interview with Mr. Toshiyuki Toyonaga about Fire Emblem (Claude‘s Japanese VA), Pgs. 1 & 2

The gaming magazine scene is still a pretty big deal in Japan to this day. Admittedly... I only cared about them to collect the giant bonus posters. I always swore I would read the magazine, but with the hours in a day being so limited, I never did.

Until last November, that is!! I bought Nindori (Nintendo Dream) for a Zelda poster, and saw that the main article of the issue was... An interview with Claude’s Japanese VA!! Now that’s the real treasure!!

And as I read, it only got more and more interesting... turns out Mr. Toshiyuki Toyonaga has been a Fire Emblem fan since the very, very beginning, and has all the unique feelings towards FE of someone who is simultaneously a fan and a professional.

I’ve gone to hell and back slowly working my way through this translation. It just so happened to be at a really high level of Japanese. One of the fun things about being a translator is, you never really know exactly what’s going to be a challenge to translate for you. (Even kid’s books can use a bunch of words you don’t know and throw you in for a loop sometimes.)

And now, it’s finally ready to start posting!! Please enjoy it to your heart’s content!!

[rough sketch] The scene for this art is the ball, so I decided to use warm tones, and bring the entire piece together with an orange-gold color. I arranged the information that I wanted to convey (that Claude is drawing the hand to him) in such a way that it would not be covered by the card icons or frame.

[midway progress] I cleaned up the lines that I drew loosely on the rough draft. I also created different layers for the outline and the colors to make it easier to color when the time came.

[finished drawing] I adjusted Claude’s right hand to give it depth, then added another chandelier in the background. When I finished coloring the entire piece, I adjusted it to fit the color scheme I had first imagined. Finally, I added the glittering lights as a finishing touch.

“There’s only one expression that Claude would have in an illustration on the dance floor at the ball!” I thought, and drew him winking. I thought it would be fun for it to seem like his dance was gradually pulling in the wallflowers, so I created that feeling. I left it up to imagination whose hand he is pulling (because everyone is wearing formal clothing that’s different from their casual outfits). I also studied all the art I had of him as closely as I possibly could to get his face just right. I wanted his personality to come out in the illustration, so I hope I got it right!

An illustrator. She’s worked as a designer and pixel artist at several game development companies, and was the illustrator for FE: Path of Radiance (GameCube), as well as the pixel artist for Kirby: Squeak Squad (DS). Freelancer since 2006. For FE Cipher, she’s provided the art for many characters, including Ike (from Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn) and Gatekeeper (from Three Houses), who’s always standing in his unique spot. She is an active creator of character art and other illustrations for the app game Fire Emblem Heroes.

21) Support chain(s) you think had wasted potential, and why? I still think about the Ingrid & Dorothea support chain leaving us hanging for resolution like that. I know we all say it, but literally the whiplash of Ingrid telling Dot to fuck off and their paralog.... the potentiality for an A-support digging into how they present themselves like characters is unparalleled. like of ALL the characters to have a Discussion^TM about how they're perceived and how they want to be perceived, it should have been those two. to quote mercymorn the first of the locked tomb series: i often think about this. bc i'm sure everyone has said these two icons, the other support i wish was just... more than it was is Constance & Ferdinand. Honestly what I wanted was a lore dump about their lives or Enbarr or their lives in Enbarr, and what i heard from them was a couple of metaphors about nobility. I just... (brian david gilbert voice) needed more meat for the grind, you know? i just think they could have really dug into something with them; like edelgard & caspar's support chain.

35) What are some of your most unpopular opinions about the game/characters/story? ohhhhhh ok. idk if it's an unpopular opinion per se, but the opinion i don't think would win me favours at a company dinner is the fact i'm not fond of the extremely linear gameplay, largely as it makes the story actually very hard to understand. 3H forces my hand into playing it for dedicated hours because of the volume of cutscenes and lack of natural stopping places (at least to me, ymmv) and because i am not a video game player outside of animal crossing and fire emblem, i just find it very hard to pick up (and subsequently put down). But with 3H, there's no pokemon journal to tell you what you caught and who you fought, there's no recap of here's what you missed on glee - and there's no way to turn back time to remember the intricacies of the relationships and plot for meta-writing reasons. i played Claude's route over the course of a year and honestly? i didn't really remember all the hints of dragon-related information to actually understand the depth of the cutscenes i was watching. the linear style of a half open-world game is fascinating on a 'im going to use my literature degree for evil' level because you are given so much freedom to Play The Game and then railroaded into progress. inset absolute bullshit about how both the intricacies of the story's past and the game's present are lost to the slow plod of time and how the victors (the surviving memories) guide your judgement of events, etc etc. but when it comes to discussing the game i think it's a massive drawback for how much time/effort has to go into simply getting your evidence. whereas with a book, i can flick to any page and gather my quotes. i have to play through to remire village if i want to get to Jeralt Content. it's probably the thing that irks me most, the extremely linear interaction i have to have with it. that was such a ramble haha but of course ymmv with everything i just said, i'm not here to invade fodlan over this u know. i just have shit memory and i wish the divine pulse had a plot recap setting lmao

42) Least favourite monastery activity, and why? i'll go with cooking - i'm one of those horrible pokemon players that just goes for raw power and nothing but power, and i have carried my heathenous ways over to fire emblem. as such, don't have time for stat boosts, and why support 1 of the kids when you can support 2. min-maxing my relationship gains over here lmao
