♡ chronicle #4 : welcome back ♡
wc : 5338
somehow, you've gotten used to living without your dragon man.
it shouldn't have been that hard to began with, you reason. since you'd only been living with him for a couple of weeks. you'd spent your whole life without this rude, bratty, infuriatingly handsome dragon guy. it really shouldn't have been hard.
you wake up to get ready for work feeling more tired than usual. this had been the case for the last two weeks now. you're lost at work, you've been really close to coming late more than once. you're coworker sachi has also asked if you were sick at least 5 times in one week, so you assume you don't exactly look your best right now.
you grab some leftovers from the fridge, hastily throwing them in the microwave to check up on your coffee. when you're done eating with the only background noise being the tv playing some game show reruns, you put your plate in the sink and remember a little too late that no one's there to clean them up for you anymore. you feel stupid, staring at the dishes like they'll suddenly wash themselves.
you'll wash them when you get back.
work goes by in a blur. you hardly remember what you did, who you'd talked to or what you had for lunch. the trip back home feels unfamiliar, like someone else was controlling your body for you. you don't mind as long as you can go home and sleep.
when you walk through your door, you check your couch reflexively, even though you've reminded yourself multiple times no one would be waiting there for you. the tv's turned off like it was when you'd left, there's nothing cooking on the stove, and there's no one on your couch.
despite reminding yourself.
you really need some sleep.
you order take out and eat while watching your favorite show for the 5000th time. it feels boring instead of comforting like it usually is, so you end up skipping a bunch of episodes straight to your favorite.
sometimes, you feel like it was all one big dream. falling in love with a dragon only for him to leave you seemed like something you could really only see in your own fantasy. but you know it isn't, because if it were you'd be able to forget about it. about him. but you can't.
it isn't painful, it doesn't feel like your heart is about to burst. it just feels so lonely. you feel like a part of you is missing, like a piece of your heart was filled to the brim with warmth only for that part to be taken away from you and leaving you cold and hollow. you don't like feeling like this. you shouldn't feel like this over someone you'd technically just met.
but it wasn't like that with him, it didn't feel like you'd just met. despite only living with him for a few weeks, you felt like you'd known him all your life. it was like you were catching up with an old friend the more you spoke to him. everything in you felt good with him. everything felt so right with him.
before you know it there are tears clouding your vision, you will yourself not to let them overflow. you hadn't cried since the day he left, you'd been distracting yourself with work not to. your favorite part of the episode comes up yet all you can do is focus on not bursting into tears. you can't go to bed feeling like shit since you've got work tomorrow. you decide to head to bed early tonight.
you'd like to think you can fool yourself into believing you've gotten used to living without katsuki. but unfortunately, you have to admit you aren't that good at lying to yourself when the first teardrop hits your pillow.
katsuki feels incredibly wrong.
it's way past the time he's usually asleep, but despite tossing and turning he can't keep his eyes shut because every time he does he sees you.
you, with your stupid bright smile. you with your stupid puffed out cheeks and pout when you'd caught him nabbing your food too late. you with your bright eyes when you come back from work to see he's made your favorite.
and you, with your glossy wet eyes when he told you he was leaving.
he really needs some fuckin' sleep.
for the last two weeks, he's been telling himself that this was better for you—for you both. he knows he could never truly be good for you. no matter how well he'd learn to cook your favorite meal. no matter how many movies and tv shows you watch together. no matter how good it feels to be with you, you'll always be a human and he, a dragon.
you're different beings made for different lives. he wasn't raised for battle, but it is a primary part of the dragon code, especially in his faction. survival of the fittest and whatnot. you were made for office jobs and midnight take out and romance movies, not for anything he was.
his friends were more than happy to see he'd finally come back home. they had basically choke-slammed him to the ground to hug him, and he can't deny he felt really a little bit happy to see them again.
he'd expected his mom to nag his ear off like she usually does but he was more than shocked to feel her wrap her arms around him tightly. she had told him she was happy to see he hadn't caused any trouble for himself and he could hear the quiver in her voice and feel the slight shakiness in her tightly strung limbs. he hadn't said anything and simply quietly held her back. his father had joined the group hug soon after and katsuki closed his eyes, indulging in the warmth of his parents' love.
this is good. this feels nice. this is where he's supposed to be.
it felt nice at the time, he recalls. but it didn't feel right.
for the last two weeks, he's been trying to tell himself that despite how much he aches, how much he yearns for you, you aren't made for him.
unfortunately, besides admitedly being a horrible liar, katsuki will forever be a selfish dragon. he only focuses on what he wants, and he wants you more than anything. he needs you more than anything.
" fuck this.." he mutters, throwing and arm over his eyes. he starts absentmindedly rubbing at his hair, like you used to. but it doesn't feel as comforting, so he huffs again.
he'd been told he unfortunately couldn't do anything about the tournament, but on a better note the guy he faced off again would be disqualified from participating since he did end up getting something from a witch, like katsuki thought. kirishima had wrapped an arm around his shoulder and told him it was a good thing. but to be honest, katsuki had almost fully forgotten about that shitty tournament. his father told him there would always be a next one. the next one in ten years. the thought of not seeing you in that time crosses his mind at makes him feel like he swallowed something sour. there's a bitter taste in his mouth at the thought but he can do nothing but try to ignore it.
just as he's about to turn to the other side of his bed a knock his door startles him. his mom walks in shortly after, opening the door halfway before walking in when she sees him awake.
" i didn't say you could come in." he grumbles half heartedly, sleep riddled voice slightly groggy. mitsuki simply sits on his bed near him, patting at his leg over the covers.
"m'not allowed to check up on my runaway son ? don't want you to leave again." she jests. katsuki knows she's joking, but he still feels a pang of guilt in his chest. he grumbles something unintelligible in response.
no words are exchanged for a moment, then mitsuki pats her son's leg a little harder, he snarls at her but she simply smiles at him.
"what do you say we go get some air ?"
the night air feels good.
soaring through the sky feels comforting. feeling the way the wind rushes through his scales feels almost therapeutic to him. it can be thrilling to soar through the air the same way it can also be calming. it provides him serenity he can't quite put into words.
katsuki finds himself wishing he could fly like this with you like when he brought you back home from work. he remembers how you'd screamed your lungs out, clutched onto him so tightly and when you'd landed back home with wobbly legs and messy..everything, you'd proclaimed it was the first and last time you'd ever go for a dragon ride. he remembers how hard he laughed and he chuffs to himself unconsciously at the memory.
flying around when he was irritated or stressed wasn't uncommon for him but he only remembers a handful of times he'd went flying with his mother. other than the times he was younger and still learning how to get the hang of it. he has to admit that that feels good, too.
they decide to rest on a nearby mountain they saw in the horizon. as soon as they land katsuki changes back into his human form, stretching as he let's out a yawn. the only remaining traces of his dragon form being his red horns and scaley tail accompanied by large red wings. he hears his mom flap her wings behind him as she also let's out a little yawn of her own. she sits down onto the gravely bottom and katsuki raises a brow before taking a spot next to her.
it's quiet as they both silently stare at the moon. it's a little chilly out but katsuki doesn't mind much.
"so," mitsuki sighs, taking a large gulp of the fresh air " you gonna tell me what happened when you went on your little expedition?" she bumps her shoulder with his playfully, katsuki growls but doesn't snap back like he usually would.
he simply shrugs "it wasn't an expedition." he gulps, it feels like a knot grows in his throat. "it wasn't anything." he doesn't notice the way his hands are tightened into fists, but his mother does.
"that so ?" she utters. she speaks in a nurturing way. that soft tone that only a mother could use for her child. it upset him even more as the knot in his throat tightens.
"i.." katsuki starts "i was around a lot of humans.." he admits. his mother hums in response, urging him to continue. "saw a lot of things, tried a lot of human stuff."
"human stuff ?"
"human foods and desserts and stuff. and movies. they're people moving around acting inside a big box that they call a tv." he tries his best to explain it in the simplest way considering it took him a while to grasp the concept of electronics himself. he can tell his mother doesn't really understand, but he's thankful she simply nods and let's him continue.
"it wasn't too bad." he concedes. " i didn't wanna kill too many of them." he jokes, his mother chuckles in response.
"anything else happen ?" she asks with a smile. katsuki can already tell shes's onto him. screw this mother's intuition shit.
he opens and closes his mouth a few times, nothing he wants to say seems to come out right.
"ma.." he starts, she hums " when you--how did it feel for you when you fell in love with pops ?"
her eyes widen at his question. she sits and thinks about it for a minute, then a smile grows on her face. " it's not something i can really explain. i just knew it when i saw him, i knew he was meant to be mine."
"even though he's a human..?" he mumbles quietly. his mother doesn't seem fazed, her dazed smile remains.
"yeah." she answers simply.
"it didn't bother you ?"
"nope." she immediatly answers, popping the p.
"it wasn't weird ?"
" it took a little gettin' used to." she hums "we're completely different after all. his family wasn't exactly on board with it. but they didn't say anythin' when i showed 'em my dragon form, i think they were just really amazed." she laughs at her own joke and katsuki fights an eyeroll.
"how'd you do it then ? how'd you..get used to it ?" he asks almost urgently.
her smile hasn't faltered since the beginning of the conversation. it seems to have gotten even wider and even brighter. " i didn't do anything. i loved your father, i still do." she sighs dreamily " when i was around him i didn't worry about anything. i didn't worry about what others thought to begin with, but i didn't worry about that. i wasn't scared of the future or anything."
"there was nothing for me to be worried about when i was around him. it always just felt like things would work out. we made each other happy, and when i was around him it all felt so.." she can't seem to find the right word to use but katsuki finds one for her immediatly.
"right ?" he finishes.
"yeah" she smiles, eyes softening as she looks at her son "yeah, it felt really right."
for the last two weeks, katsuki's been trying to deceive himself. by now he knows it isn't working. at all. he'd been trying to keep his mind quiet. he's been spending time with his friends and it's been nice. but there's clearly something missing. something he knows that his parents or his friends can fill, despite them caring so much for him. and he feels bad because he cares, he really does. but there's something he needs.
you're the one he needs.
"i think.." katsuki jumps a little when his mom speaks up again "i think there's somewhere you need to be, isn't there ?" she asks, though that knowing look she gives him clearly says she already knows the answer.
katsuki bites his lip, looking down towards the ground below. he can't see the bottom.
"i'm scared, ma.." he admits, meekly. mitsuki's heart squeezes at her little boy's heart showing in his eyes, scared of the unknown despite trying his best to convince himself he isn't.
his mother places her hand ontop of his and squeezes " i know, i know you are.." she comforts.
"w-what if it's too late and i messed shit up ?" she shakes her head, shushing him.
"you didn't, i know you didn't." she speaks carefully "if that person is the right one for you, then there's absolutely no way you have." she pulls him into a hug and he hugs her back tightly. no more words are exchanged as katsuki and his mother sit there. she pulls away and presses her forehead to his.
"you get goin' now, okay ?" she feels him nod after a moment and her smiles grows wider. she ruffles her son's hair and he grumbles, pushing at her arm and he fights off a smile.
he's sure, he knows what he needs to do now.
he gets up with vigor and stretches out his limbs and his wings as they flex and expand on his back. before he takes off though, he hears his mom call for him. he turns to look at her proud smiling face.
"you'd better come and visit !" she grinned, sharp fangs on display. katsuki smiles back at that, sharp grin rivaling hers.
" obviously !" he affirms, before taking off.
you wake up like you'd had the best sleep in your life. probably because you cried yourself to sleep.
you're awake an hour earlier than you usually are and you can't seem to get back to sleep. so bitterly, you decide to just get up and start your day an hour early.
you're definitely not getting ready for work at this hour, so your hello- kitty jammies are staying on. you remember you have a half eaten tub of vanilla-caramel-brownie ice cream in the freezer and it makes you a little happier. you walk over to your fridge with a little skip in your step.
when you sit down on your couch and turn your tv on you can already see the sun rising from your balcony. and it makes you dread having to go to work in an hour and a few minutes, you do your best to ignore it and watch a rerun of some old drama tv show you found.
you take your first bite and hum to yourself happily. the ice cream melts on your tongue and the flavours burst onto your tastes buds. if you could you'd eat ice cream every single day.
but katsuki would scold you for it.
it feels a little harder to swallow down your next bite.
the female and male lead on the show are arguing about something. the man says he only has eyes for the lady. he says that it's always been her, that if he were reborn in another life, in another country, he would still always find his way back to her.
you quietly keep watching, taking smaller and smaller scoops of ice cream. the lady is doubtful, she asks the male how she knows he won't break her heart. he responds that she only needs to trust him, that she needs trust herself.
"what is your heart telling you right now ?" he asks.
"it's telling me.." there's a dramatic pause " that i love you..!" she declares.
the two share a hug and an old ending song plays, you can hear an audience clapping like you sometimes do in old sitcoms. you really wish you could go back to sleep when you check your phone and see that only twenty minutes have passed. you wonder if you can call in sick as you play around with your ice cream, but you draw the line at that. that'd be too childish and you're too grown to be faking sick just because you got your heart broken.
you switch through a couple of channels before you land on an animal documentary. it's about red panda's and red panda's are adorable, so you shuffle on your couch to get comfortable and scoop up another big bite of ice cream.
the moment you bring your spoon to your lips though, you suddenly feel a big gust of wind. accompanied by a loud crash. and a giant hole through your fucking wall.
your spoon stays frozen against your lips, it's cold but you can barely feel it. slowly, you turn to look at something coming out of the cloud of smoke caused by the debris.
or no, it's a someone. you can see them stand up straighter as huge wings stretch on their back along with huge pointy horns and—actually maybe it is a something after all.
except you squint and you realise that it isn't a something.
it's katsuki.
it's katsuki and he's looking at you, bright red eyes focused solely on yours. he's here, he's here with you.
and he's once again blasted a hole through your wall.
you almost want to laugh, but you're afraid if you do you'll start crying. so you simply stare at him. he takes a deep breath and opens his mouth
“hi..” he exhales.
he’s heaving, taking in the force at which your wall was blasted into pieces one could assume it was probably because he was flying really fast, and he was. but this wasn’t really going all out for him. frankly, katsuki bakugou is heaving because he’s so incredibly nervous.
“h-hi..” you utter back, wide eyed. katsuki zones in on something on your face and furrows his brows.
“you’re eating that cold shit that early in the morning ? you’ll get sick.” he chides. this time you do laugh, because he’s so insanely ridiculous, how could you not.
“yeah well, no one was here to stop me so..” he knows the other meaning to your joke very well and his heart hurts at the sadness in your eyes when you fully realize he’s actually here.
“why did you—i thought you had to go home ?” you stutter. he takes a hesitant step towards your couch, towards you. his hand twitches, wanting to reach out to you, to touch you, but he holds back for now.
“yeah i did.” he nods “so here i am.”
your heart feels like it’s beating while being held down under a huge weight. you want to do so many things. you want to cry, ask him so many questions and kiss his mouth off but you can only bring yourself to ask “why ?”
katsuki frowns at the way your bottom lip wobbles and he immediately decides he can’t have that. he walks up to you and grabs your hand to pull you towards him, you stand up with a squeal as he pulls you into him. you’re ice cream long forgotten as neither of you notice the tub hitting the floor.
right now you’re only focused on him and he on you.
“i-i tried to tell myself that i didn’t need you at first, that it was better if i didn’t. we both know we’re—more than completely different,” he chuckles humorlessly. “tried telling myself that i didn’t need you because i didn’t need you my entire life, so why should meeting you, a human, change anything ?”
"but then—i don’t know, i realized that i’d spent so much time with you and your normal human life. with your weird habits and routines and your cheesy animal love stories. and then suddenly i just—" he stops himself mid rambling, he’s still heaving and he can’t seem to calm down. until you reach up and place your hand in his hair.
in seconds it’s feels like he can breathe again. your hands in his hair feel like taking a flight in the dead of night. your entire being is like the way it feels when the wind rushes through his scales.
he needs you, he needs you, he needs you, he needs you and he needs you so bad.
he plops his head against your shoulder and you hear the purring sound from when you’d first pet him in your office building. when you didn’t really know why you did, and that it just felt right to.
“suddenly i realized that i couldn’t be without you. i couldn’t see myself without you and your stupid smug face whenever you’re being a smart ass. without you and your weird taste in movies and your hands in my hair and your smile and—" he cuts himself off again. seemingly realizing he’d said too much. you don’t want to embarrass him too much too soon so you hold back the giggle bubbling up in your throat.
“i thought you liked my taste in movies.” you joke, playing with the hair on his nape. you feel him huff a chuckle against your shoulder.
“never said i didn’t like it. said it’s weird.”
“is there really a difference?” you snort.
“hell yeah there is,” he retorts “ya go from watchin’ that weird demon cat on your phone to watching the conjuring in the same breath.”
“ that just means i'm open to a lot of genres, it’s a good thing !” he snorts then grumbles some kind of agreement under his breath “and don’t you insult hello kitty like that ! she’s done nothing to be classified as a ‘demon cat’.”
“ it’s fuckin’ weird. why doesn’t it have a mouth ? and why are it’s black beady eyes starin’ into my fuckin’ soul ?”
“ quit calling her 'it' ? and she’s adorable !”
“she’s freaky is what she is.” you groan.
"you're insufferable. so incredibly annoying." you grumble in defeat. he lifts his head up to look at you then, his award winning cheese on display with a tiny fang poking out.
"yeah, maybe..but you missed me." he counters. you huff, but you really can't lie "yeah, yeah i did" you say. it comes out sadder than you'd wanted it to, and he seems to notice it. his eyebrows furrow and the remorseful look on his face makes your heart burn. your expression mirrors his as you speak.
"i really did miss you, katsuki. i really did." you whisper sorrowfully. you feel him wipe the tears you didn't even know where about to spill from the corner of your eyes. he grabs your cheeks in both of his large hands and wipes at your eyes, then rubs at your cheeks softly. his eyes burn with unspoken words and feelings and you don't need to hear him say anything to understand. you understand him better than anyone. human or dragon.
and that's all you need.
"i know." he leans in until you're inches away and your eyes flutter closed when he nuzzles his nose against your tenderly. he places his forehead against yours in a way you can only describe as loving. "i know." he whispers again.
"but i won't leave again. i promise." he vows, rubbing his nose against your cheek. the gesture feels very animal like and you giggle a little. he huffs against your cheek in amusement. "you're mine, you've always been. i know that—i'm sure of it now." he corrects "so i'm not goin' anywhere." he's so close. just like that night.
you want to let go, want to give yourself to him and trust him but there's something holding you back. katsuki can tell you're doubtful. he nudges his head against your softly, "talk to me." he urges.
"i just..i'm scared.." you admit "what if things don't work out ? i really, really like you katsuki." your voice trembles and your bottom lip wobbles the slightest bit "i don't want you to go away again.." he shakes his head adamntly, his hair tickles against your forehead. he breathes a sigh and pulls back just enough to look you in the eyes properly.
"i don't know how the future will turn out, or what's gonna happen." he knocks his forehead against yours again "but that doesn't scare me. mostly cus i'm not scared of anything," you roll your eyes but you can't help the chuckle that rips out of you. he smiles, obviously proud of his joke.
"but also because i know you're it for me. no matter what happens, i trust that i'll always come back to you." he seems to realize he's been awfully out of character. a cute blush grows on his face but that doesn't deter him in the slightest, as his eyes stay fixed on you. it makes chills run down your spine.
"you..were made for me. that's all i need." he closes his eyes, embarrasment catching up to him. you smile at how adorable your cranky dragon man could be when he wanted to be.
that's all he needs. you're all he needs. the thought fills your body with so much warmth and love.
you bring your hands up to his cheeks. he opens his eyes. looking down at you with half lidded eyes and so much affection it makes you giddy.
"what is your heart telling you right now ?"
you smile up at him, a watery giggle slips past your lips.
" i love you."
you trust yourself. you trust katsuki. you trust your love for him.
his eyes widen. and suddenly he's leaning down and all he gives you as a warning is a breathy whisper of your name. you don't think twice when you nod your head fervently and then he's closing the distance and kissing you.
in a second it's like you feel whole. it's like he breathes life into you with the kiss he presses onto your lips. and the next one, and the one after that.
he pulls back to catch his breath for no less than three seconds before he's stealing yours away again. but you don't mind in the slightest. you'd give all of yourself up willingly to him. you wish you could stay close with him, holding onto him like this forever.
but then there's a sudden sharp pain in your lip.
"ouch !" you yelp. katsuki immediatly pulls back, eyes racking over your face until he notices red on your lip. you lick at your bottom lip and taste blood. you look up at him, a mix of amusement and suprise on your features. after a second, you let out a chuckle.
"guess you missed me lots, huh ?" you laugh some more when he growls at you. trying his best to seem somewhat intimidating despite the state he's in. he's breathing heavy and he's sweating a little bit, cheeks fully red.
"b-be quiet, human." he leans down and licks the blood off your lip. it flusters you despite him meaning it innocently, dragons are way more direct when it comes to physical affection, it seemed. "i'll roast you alive."
"no you won't, liar." you answer arrogantly. you bring your arms to rest around his neck, your hands play around with the hair on his nape. "you like me too much."
"you're gettin' real cocky, aren't ya ?"
"am i wrong ?" you counter. he narrows his eyes at your challenge but lowers his head in defeat soon after. he shakes his head with a chuckle. "no, guess you're not." he concedes.
"you guess ?" you tease.
"don't push your luck, loser." he nips at your nose, and you giggle. he snarls at you when you tug at his horn, but he can't hide the smile on his face.
"i—uh." he looks away, off to the side towards your tv "love. you. too..or whatever you humans say.." he confesses shyly. too much direct eye contact for one day, it seems. you giggle, then lean in and press a sweet kiss to his lips. it takes him a second before he eases into it. slowly, just as passionately as the first time, but you both know there's no rush to let each other know how you feel. you've got all the time in the world together.
"i'm glad.." you say once you pull away. "so, can i assume that means you're back now?" you joke.
"i told you i'm not goin' nowhere. you're mine." he asserts " i'm back." he states with a fanged grin.
you smile wider at his words. you're smiling so hard your cheeks start to hurt but you really don't mind "welcome back." you answer lovingly.
this feels right. this feels like where you both belong. he's back.
back where he belongs.
you pat his nape "to make yourself back at home, you can make me breakfast !" you chirp. "you owe me at least twenty five homemade dinners too, so you'd better get to work." you laugh out loud when he pokes at your side with one hand, with the one on your face squeezing your cheeks out.
"cheeky brat, already puttin' me to work, hah ?!" he grins "i guess i do owe you dinner though, but definitely not fuckin' twenty five of 'em !" you both laugh at each other some more and you wish all of your days with him here could feel like this. but even if they don't, you're not worried. as long as you're together, you know everything will be okay. you trust that with all your heart.
"katsuki ?" you start after a moment. he hums in response, urging you to continue while he nibbles and presses smooches on your shoulder. you smile, you're so incredibly happy.
"fix up my damn wall, would you ?"

Guys guys guys
So no thanks to the amazing Yuzuya the fantasy world of MHA has been plaguing me SO should I write a Bakugou x reader fantasy AU series?? It's also not helping @cashmoneyyysstuff finished her Fire Breathing Roommate Chronicles (which are AMAZING btw defo go read it he's so goofy but so sweet and clingy hello??? Elle ily you characterize him so well 😭) and @zanarkandskylines with her heartbreaking Hollow Hearts series that has left me in tears and more emotionally attached that I'd like to admit (the writing is amazing omfg rei I will always be the president of your fan club and I will die on that hill). The Nephilim Chronicles Ch. 2
Okay, so there will be romance, but there won't be smut. Still safe for younger audiences but also still a dark fantasy, so read at your own discretion.
All of that had happened a little over four years ago. Now, Char stood in the middle of her dorm room with an ancient leather-bound book in one hand and a glowing ball of light in the other.
She slammed the book closed in her hand and tossed it behind her, where it landed with a muted thud on her queen-sized bed. When she had first arrived at Marble Hills Academy, she had enjoyed the first year of having a roommate, but once the second year had rolled around, she was paired up with a totally different girl with a whole new personality and power type to get used to, Char was over it.
Now in her final year here, she finally had her own room. She shook her head to clear it of thoughts of Horizon Silkspark, the half-angel, half-fairy she had been paired with her second year, and brought her now book-free hand up to the other side of the ball of light.
Char focused as she pulled her hands apart and watched the ball grow in size and brightness, from roughly that of a pomegranate to that of an overgrown pumpkin. A week into her first year here, she had mastered this with ease.
She was days away from graduation and had only one more exam to take. Of course, they had reserved her specialty magic exam for the very last.
As Char took a deep breath, she changed the color of the ball of light, slowly rotating through all the visible colors, seamlessly blending each shade into the next. Her room was bathed in the glow of the ever-changing light.
Next, she would be required to double the size of the ball of light while still maintaining the color change. This, too, would have been easy—or it would have been if the door to her room hadn't flown open and smacked into the wall.
The ball of light flickered as Char's concentration faltered. Mor bounded in with a wide grin on her face, and the ball of light vanished altogether.
"I'm guessing by that grin you've either passed your last exam or you successfully pranked Peterion for all his stupid childish bullying against one of the younger students," Char said as she walked around to her bed and threw herself down next to the discarded spell book.
Peterion Kotalis was a fire magic Nephilim who had started at Marble Hills the same year they had, and he was a dickhead, to say the least. How a Boitatan-Humanoid Nephilim had become so aggressive was still confusing to Char. Sure, sometimes their species was known to have tempers at night, but nothing like Peterion.
His Boitatan features did nothing to help him out, either. That narrow face, with yellow eyes, slit pupils, and scales in places on his body, only served to make him more menacing. Let alone his wings, which were made of entirely red feathers, and along the tops, instead of the usual thicker small feathers, there were deep orange scales.
"Definitely the latter. And you should have seen the look on Peterion's face. Thankfully, he won't be here next year just like us, but I wasn't leaving here without putting him in his place one last time. He will never be able to look at ice cream the same again," Morgana explained. Char shook her head; she really didn't want to know.
"Well, hopefully, he learned his lesson this time," Char sighed before she dropped down onto the trunk at the foot of her bed.
She watched Mor, who was digging through the last bit of Char's snack stash like she always did. A soft smile played on her lips as the woman who was now her girlfriend after a lifetime of incredibly close friendship pulled out the last of her favorite pastries from the cafeteria.
"Oh, he most definitely did. Thanks to the help from that little ball of energy, Horizon. Her fairy magic is some terrifying shit sometimes," Mor explained in between bites of the pastry. Char herself knew this to be true from firsthand experience.
There was another different bully last year who had transferred from an academy across the continent that specialized in Selkie magic. He hadn't been showing any signs of progressing there but had really blossomed with Nephilim-focused lessons.
He had targeted Horizon from the start because of her personality. She wasn't the only fae Nephilim, but she was the most energetic of them all. He didn't seem to like that.
After a week of turning the other cheek, Horizon stood up in the middle of class after he had made a pretty disgusting remark about her lack of hesitation in participating in class. And had set so many bugs upon him.
The teacher had even tried to get him to stop all week long, so when Horizon covered every millimeter of the boy with centipedes and stink bugs, the teacher simply laughed with the rest of the class. He dropped out a week later, but the most terrifying part of the whole incident had been Horizon's appearance changing.
Her eyes had glowed blood red, her teeth appeared to suddenly decay, and her wings had turned black, with chunks of them appearing to be ripped out. She almost looked like some of her changeling classmates.
She had explained to Char that she only took on that appearance because she had overheard him being racist about their changeling classmates.
The whole class had partied out on the lawn for half the night, everyone taking turns to hoist Horizon onto their shoulder and parade her around for everyone to cheer and shower her flowers before they finally "got in trouble" with the teachers who just wanted them to sleep and not get alcohol poisoning.
"You know, one would think that when Horizon covered him in bugs in class that day, he would have gotten the hint," Char mused as Mor finished off two more pastries in seconds.
"Yeah, one really would think that," Mor muttered as she finally walked over to Char. The darkness magic Nephilim had suddenly lost her earlier amusement. The shadows she had learned to weave seemed to collect at her feet more.
Charamaline pulled Morgana into her lap and kissed her girlfriend deeply. She didn't pull away until she literally felt the shadows slip away.
"Now tell me why you really came in here," Char said as she kept her forehead pressed to Mor's.
"I really might have bombed that test," Mor whispered.
"What makes you say that?"
"Well, everything was going fine, even though the tester didn't know much about my type of magic. Then that memory of the time you got possessed came rushing back, and the next thing I knew, the room was covered in so much darkness I couldn't hear anything," Mor explained in a barely-there whisper. Thanks to their proximity and Char's elven ears, she heard every word.
And just like that, the memory she thought she had buried surfaced. It was a week after they had both taken their magic confirmation tests. She mostly remembered what Morgana had told her afterward.
"Though ye seek shelter, you will be given no refuge," the voice that came out of Char's mouth was loud. The hairs on every inch of Mor's body stood on end as she looked over at her girlfriend.
Char's eyes were glowing bright white, and she was hovering off the ground by a couple of inches, though her wings were still tucked against her back. Mor had taken a hesitant step forward, and Char's eyes immediately fixed on her.
"Char baby, what's going on?" Mor's voice was filled with fear. They were in the field behind Char's house, and though there wasn't anyone else nearby, she knew this would attract attention.
"The forces of darkness lie within you. You must not give in to the voices you hear, or you will be dealt with harshly," Char said, her voice still sounding like many.
"Charamaline babe, please, what are you talking about? Why does your voice sound like that? How are you floating without using your wings?" The questions kept tumbling out of Mor's mouth. Char floated up higher, and now her whole body started to glow bright white.
"We've been watching you, Morgana, since you were born. You are the one who will tip the scales. There is a reason Darkness Magic was wiped out almost a thousand years ago. It's not only hazardous, but every wielder in history has gone corrupt. We won't allow you to go corrupt. We will be keeping tabs on you even closer now that you've started to hear the whispers within the darkness," the voices grew louder, and a couple more appeared.
Mor felt a hand on her shoulder and turned around to see Char's mom, Hazel, standing there with an apprehensive look on her face. Suddenly, Char stopped glowing and then collapsed to the ground. Mor sprinted over to her without hesitation this time and pulled her into her lap.
"Char baby, speak to me. What the hell just happened?" Mor's voice had started trembling at that point. Char had been breathing slowly and deeply as she had been knocked unconscious.
"Morgana, dear, we need to get her to the town healer, and someone needs to go tell the elders what happened," Hazel said. Morgana got to her feet, still holding Char in her arms close to her chest, and extended her black wings.
"I'll take her to the healer. Can you please tell the elders?" Morgana asked. Hazel nodded and extended her wings before taking off.
Morgana pushed off the ground with her wings, keeping Char close to her chest as she flew across their vast village toward the healer's house.
She touched down a couple of minutes later, but before she could make it the rest of the way up the walkway, the door pulled open.
The healer, a full-blown male Angel named Davidson, had come tearing down the path toward them. He didn't even ask any questions as he scooped Char out of Mor's arms.
"Char sweetie, where'd you go," Mor asked as she pressed a kiss to her girlfriend's nose.
"Sorry. I was just remembering that day from what you told me about it," Char sighed. She knew she didn't have to apologize, but she felt the need to this time.
"Don't worry about it. I probably did better on the exam than I thought. And besides, in just another week, we will be out of here for three months no matter what," Mor explained. She slid off Char's lap and headed back for the door. "I'm going to let you finish practicing, but don't overdo it. I'll be back in a couple of hours to walk with you to your exam," Mor added with a blown kiss towards Char. Char mimed, catching the kiss as her girlfriend slipped out of the door.
With no distractions left, Char stood back up and summoned the ball of light again. This time, she would get it down without breaking a sweat.
Two hours later, true to her word, Morgana pushed open the door to Char's room. This time with more ease than earlier. The room was bathed in rainbows as Char finished shrinking the ball of light back to nothingness while maintaining the colors.
"That will never cease to amaze me," Mor breathed out as she leaned against the doorjamb.
"Honestly, I don't see myself getting used to it either. And it's my magic," Char agreed with Mor. She grabbed her journal of notes to study while she waited in case they arrived early. After making sure the lights were shut off in her room, she motioned for Morgana to lead the way.
"You'd think since we are both infrequent magic users, they wouldn't have any finals for us. But apparently, they felt the need to go to the lengths of digging out the tests from when both of our magics were last in use," Mor grumbled as they wound through the corridors that led to the office of Professor Neptune. He would be administering the final exam.
"At least they modified them, though," Char said as they rounded the last corner. Four years later, the towering door to Professor Neptune's office still amazed both girls.
"These are definitely going to be the things I miss the most in this place," Mor mused as she stroked her hand down the ornate carvings. Sea creatures of all kinds covered the doors. As well as water nymphs, hydra, sirens, and even some kelpies. But the best part of the door was the giant Kraken that made up the centerpiece. Even in shades of deep blues and soft greens, it looked menacing.
"This door and Professor Centruos's door are two of my favorites for sure," Char agreed. The silvery door is woven with designs that signify his time magic still left Char dizzy sometimes.
The door opened to reveal a man with short, curly black hair, stark blue eyes, and wings made of leathery skin and sinew. Professor Neptune was the most proficient water magic Nephilim the world had ever seen. His wings came from his Gargoyle mother. "Charamaline, right on time as always," he said by way of greeting.
He pulled the heavy wooden door open with ease and ushered Char inside. He reminded Morgana that the door was meant to stay closed and be a complete sound barrier, then pushed the door closed. To everyone's delight, the backside of his door matched the front identically. She took a seat in one of the comfortable plush chairs across from his desk.
"Alright, so as you know, today is the final examination you will ever have to take as a student here. Are there any questions before we begin?" Professor Neptune's voice was like a heavy storm—thunderous and deep even when he was trying to be quiet.
"No, Professor," Char said.
"Then, on that note, I need you to turn out every light in this room at once," he instructed as he rounded his desk and sat down.
With no more than a wave of her hand, Char put out every light in Neptune's office. Not even a fraction of a second of hesitation between any of them. Knowing he would ask her to return the light sources, she did so preemptively.
"That's quite impressive," he murmured as he noted down her actions. The rudimentary electrically powered lamp on his desk glowed just bright enough for him to see his notes.
The test went on and on. Put out these many lights at this interval. Return only these many lights. Turn half the lights green and the other half pink. Until they finally got to the part, Char had been struggling with the most.
"If you need to stand for this part, please go ahead and do so now," he instructed. Char nodded and pushed to her feet. The space behind his desk was mainly opened up, though she knew it was usually full of furniture and art. Once she was a reasonable distance from his desk, she stopped and turned to him.
"Alright now, I need you to make a ball of light as big as you can. Then, once it's as big as you can get it, I need you to make it dance through all of the colors on the spectrum that you can manage. After that, you'll be required to shrink it back down into nothingness while maintaining the color wave," he explained. Char already knew this, so it didn't take long for her to make the ball appear.
Once the disco of colors had faded into nothingness and Professor Neptune's face was its usual ashen gray, Char returned to her chair.
Neptune finished writing out his notes on her exam paper and then covered it with a nearby book.
"Alright, Charamaline, your exam is over. You are free to head back to your room. Exam results will be posted tomorrow morning at the final breakfast for your class," he said. Char took that as her dismissal and headed for the door.
Mor waited, leaning against the wall just outside of Neptune's office. Right where Char had left her.
"So, how did it go?"
"Honestly? I did pretty well. We will know for sure tomorrow morning at breakfast," Char shrugged as she headed back to her room. Their arms were linked, and they walked in comfortable silence.
On the way, they ran into Horizon, who let them know there would be a party in the woods tonight. Char normally didn't like the woods behind the school. Ancient and unspeakable creatures roamed in those woods. But they answered one of the professors and knew better than to harm students who weren't harming anyone.
"You know what? We will see where the night takes us," Mor provided as an excuse for Char, knowing her girlfriend hated the woods.
"Actually, I want to go. It's our last party as college students, so let's do it," Char said as she turned from Horizon to Morgana.
"I know, but you hate those woods, dear," Mor pushed back. She wanted to be sure Char was sure.
"Like I said. It's our last party as college students. Let's do it," Char doubled down.
"Alright, babe, as long as you want to. The second you say you want to leave, we will leave," Mor declared.
"Sounds like a plan," Horizon squealed and then flittered away on her sparkling fairy wings.
"You know, she might have been a super annoying roommate, but she's actually a really good friend," Char remarked as Horizon turned the corner opposite where they were headed and disappeared.
"I told you she would grow on you eventually, babe. Everyone does," Mor teased as they reached Char's room.
"Not everyone," Char objected.
"That's true. Though how Peterion could ever grow on anyone or anything but mold is surprising to me," Mor joked, but she was also serious.
Neither of them could understand how Peterion had ever managed to find friends. However, he did end up making friends with the changeling Nephilims and the werewolf Nephilims. So, he fit right in.
As they trudged along the path that had been carved from decades of students walking through here, Char could feel the beasts watching them. They were not close enough for her to see, hear, or smell them, but she could still feel the presence of dread they emitted.
Just when it was about to become unnerving, the woods opened up into a clearing. Usually, there was nothing here but grass and an unusual quietness, but not tonight. Tonight, the clearing was full of people, small fires, tables of food, kegs of alcohol, and two teachers. Char almost didn't notice them perched in the trees, trying to keep the students safe without interrupting. But the wind had blown Professor Fenix's long red hair and green dress, which was just enough for Char to notice.
The Seraphim Angel flashed a dozen of her hidden eyes at Char before turning and observing back to the party. This was her silent hello. And across the clearing sat another Seraphim Angel, Professor Douma. He also had long red hair, but unlike his twin, Professor Fenix, he wore tight black clothing to blend in better with the shadows of night settling in.
Mor tugged Char over to a nearby keg and poured them both a cup of beer. Cups in hand, they made their way over to the food. Once they both had a plate piled almost too high with food, they found an empty picnic-style table and sat down.
"You know, I'll really never get used to the fact that some people have more than two eyes," Mor admitted suddenly while they were eating. Someone had enchanted an orb to play music and had made it float just below where it would bother the Seraphim.
"And I'll never really get over that werewolf. Nephilim can still go through the full change during a full moon," Char responded, around a mouthful of food.
"You still haven't learned how to chew with your mouth closed? What are you like, two?" A voice sneered from behind Char. And with the way Mor's eyes darkened, she didn't even need to recognize Peterion's voice to know it was him.
"You still haven't learned your lesson?" Mor growled back. Char turned just enough to see Peterion was alone. That was truly stupid of him.
"You think having your shadows drag me through the muck in the horse stalls was a lesson? All you did was piss me off completely," he snarled in response.
"And all you've managed to do is make sure you're properly punished this time," came Douma's sudden and calm voice. Char whipped around at the same time as Mor to see the Seraphim land behind Morgana.
"But Sir, she literally dragged me through horse shit," Peterion protested. Douma just crossed his arms over his chest. Dozens of his eyes appeared along his skin and over his clothes. Each one was a different shade of the rainbow. They made his glowing white skin dance with a bit of color.
"As if that's going to work on me. You think I don't know why young Morgana did that? You're a bully. A fully grown-ass man and a bully. It's time to learn your lesson," Douma said, still cool and calm.
Tendrils of magic shot out and wrapped around Peterion's waist. At least eight distinct types of magic danced around his clothes, and the Seraphim unfurled all eight of his wings. The whole party came to a sudden standstill at the sight.
All four sets of wings were different from the others. The top set was feathered like an Angel's. The second set was like Harpy Wings. The third set was like those of Fairies. The fourth and final set was like those of the long-ago erased dragons. With a deafening boom, Douma launched into the air, allowing Peterion to dangle along in the grasp of the Seraphim's magic.
To his credit, Peterion managed not to scream like a little bitch. Everyone watched as Douma disappeared. Just as the party started up again, Char noticed Professor Neptune silently land on the tree Professor Douma had left.

Quarantine Fic Rec List Part 1
Since we’re all bored/stressed in quarantine, I thought I’d do a couple of rec lists. For this one I’m mostly doing some very well written but more unusual fics that you might not have come across before. I’ve listed the fandom and ships for each.
So Much More Than That by brocanteur (complete | 4,005 | T | Mean Girls; Regina George/Cady Heron )
"And she missed Cady Heron. She missed her and blamed her for everything." Post-film.
The Richest Men In Town by copperbadge (complete | 2,476 | G | It’s A Wonderful Life)
George Bailey, a year after meeting the angel Clarence (second-class), gets a message from Clarence via an unlikely third party: H.F. Potter.
A Marital Education by Yahtzee (complete | 12,707 | M | Pride & Prejudice; Elizabeth/Darcy; period typical)
Darcy's impotent.
The Kindness of Men by debit (complete | 2,476 | G | Black Beauty; Fixit)
The last time Ginger saw Black Beauty, she'd said, "I wish the end was come, I wish I was dead. I have seen dead horses, and I am sure they do not suffer pain."
Once Around the Block by ecouterbien (complete | 1,134 | M | The Drop; Bob Saginowski/Nadia Dunne)
She was shaking when he let her out of the bar, and it wasn’t because of the cold. It wasn’t even a long walk to her house, a block and a half at most, but it was the longest walk she ever remembered taking. She counted every breath, every footstep, all the time listening for his steps on the sidewalk behind her. He wouldn’t just let her go like that, would he? Not after what she’d seen him do.
You look so Seattle by chaosmanor (complete | 8,955 | T | Venom )
Eddie and Venom are in Seattle chasing leads. Shit gets blown up. And there's fish.
A Princess And A Guy Like Me by Yahtzee (complete | 7,107 | T | Rapunzel/Flynn Rider)
“Rapunzel has never had choices before. I want her to have choices now.”
I nodded. “Absolutely.”
He meant, at least in part, choices of guys to marry who were not impoverished orphans/recently reformed thieves.
gunna pass me to that house above by deadendtracks (amonitrate) (complete | 625 | T | Peaky Blinders )
This wasn’t the trenches but it was the closest Alfie’d been to pinned down since he got back, and while Tommy wasn’t exactly a friend, that didn’t make him an enemy, now, did it.
A Broken Soul by wheatear (complete | 4,529 | G | Harry Potter)
What exactly is the nature of a soul? And when Lord Voldemort so willingly split his own soul in half, what damage did he do to himself?
dying out on burnt rage by lunaskeeper (complete | 2,576 | M | Peaky Blinders; Tommy Shelby/Alfie Solomons; period typical attitudes, POV outsider )
John hadn’t seen the same, trapped look in Tommy’s eyes in his office. And all of a sudden it was bubbling out of John’s mouth, a question he'd been pondering since he’d met Stefan’s shaky gaze with his own.
“Have you ever sucked cock?”
Rara Avis by Coryphasia (complete | 14,854 | G | My Fair Lady)
The night after the Embassy Ball, Eliza Doolittle walked out on Henry Higgins and disappeared. Three years later, she returns to see if wrongs can be made right
'til the walls did crumble by arahir (complete | 3,742 | G | Game of Thrones’ Jon/Tormund)
Jon Snow and Tormund Giantsbane and their giant dog go camping with a bunch of Wildlings. What happens next will SHOCK you. (They are buddies who fall in love lmao.)
“Not worried, are you?”
“For a crow boy? Never.” Tormund looks away, off toward the mountains in the distance where the Fist of the First Men sits as a jut of stone in the ice fields, which are turning greener day by day. “Don’t let them keep you down there, Jon Snow. Don't die in the South."
Be Careful What You Wish For by The_Necroposter (complete | 225,838 | M | Twilight; very dark, spitefic, horror, proceed with care; skip to the end for an author’s note in which the writer epically calls out the problematic aspects of the original canon )
What if Breaking Dawn wasn't a Mary Sue fantasy, but a story with a plot, character development, and consequences? What if Bella's transformation actually was a sacrifice, and not only her getting used to an alien body was a challenge, but also staying alive in a world filled with enemies? Find out how a naive, selfish girl grows up and copes with the biggest mistake of her life.
Naming of the Beast by NeurotropicAgentX (complete | 1,316 | T | Venom; pre-canon symbiote world building)
Consciousness hit like a wave, like a signal, like an attack. There had been nothing and now there was a jumble of concepts and thoughts and impulses. It writhed and thrashed, at once realising that it had a body that could do this, that could express this new consciousness.
It screeched.

Games of the Decade (2010-2019 Edition)
So since 2020 is approaching, I thought I’d make a list of games that I’ve played during my journey, the year is 2010 I was about 23 years old (on the cusp of being 24) and I’ve decided to stop playing World of Warcraft for my own physical and mental health (you see I never thought that this would happen to me being addicted to that game for so many years that I have shunned away from society, I gave up on humanity, I didn’t want to go out and celebrate with my ‘friends’ and Azeroth became my home for the past 6 years and it became an unhealthy obsession that one day I’ve collapsed at home and woke in a hospital.) When the doctors were swarming around my bed asked me “Can I remember what happened to me before I collapsed?” the answered but then they bombarded me with more questions... I wanted to scream “STOP!”, until one doctor (a psychiatrist) overheard my story and had an emergency 1-to-1 session with him, he even asked the ‘right questions’ (funny how we can say the wrong answers... but the wrong questions? Made me laugh.) The phychiatrist smiled and said “Welcome back”.
So I’ve decided to quit World of Warcraft and started to readjust to society that my Mum gave me an XBox 360. Now I was overwhelmed by the choices I didn’t know where to start (granted I had the Wii and now an XBox 360) I was really lost in thought until someone actually wanted to talk to me I shall call him ‘Dan’ and we hit it off “Yes, I do look like I am lost you see I am a recovering World of Warcrack addict and I am given an XBox 360, what games do you recommend?” and this is when Dan got out Borderlands, Fallout, Fallout: New Vegas (2010 Honourable Mention) and Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (2010). You see Dan’s preferred genre is Shoot ‘em ups and I on the other hand tend to enjoy RPGs so I got the best of both worlds.
Mass Effect 2 has this system where if you played and completed Mass Effect you can import your save file, get some additional perks and pick up where you have left off. I seem to like that concept where “Do I need to play the first game to play and understand the story?” to me the answer is “yes” as you gain additional content but it’s the iconic “suicide squad mission”
So we are at 2011 and Minecraft (2011 Honourable Mention) is in it’s infancy and even though I’ve played it later, I enjoyed watching the Yogscast’s “Shadow of Israfel” series and there are times when I occasionally watch a YouTube video looking at other people’s creations (“Man, I need to get myself a copy of Minecraft when I finish my games of the decade.” —Matt. But only 2 games have approached me and they are Xenoblade Chronicles (2011) and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011). With the Wii going into retirement and even though Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2011 Honourable Mention) is a popular title in the Wii library... I went down the niche path and picked Xenoblade Chronicles is the perfect swan song for the Wii and one of my all time favourite games that I’ve enjoyed playing. There are many things that Xenoblade Chronicles has offered me and what appealed to me are...
The amazing soundtrack (where it has music for the day and the night cycles)... I tend to use the nighttime music to help me go to sleep.
The unique world building, where Homs, Nopon and (there is this race of angels I can’t remember what they are called) live on these dead gigantic titans Bionis and the Mechonis.
A story that started out Shulk wanting revenge but that revenge eventually turned into understanding.
With Skyrim I ALWAYS seem to find my way coming back to this game as it gives me a ton of replay value that I even create my own D&D characters and put them in Skyrim. Whenever I am stressed with the latest releases I sometimes pop in Skyrim and go on all these adventures and explore and when I had enough I know I can always go to Whiterun and stay in Breezehome. I sometimes go on YouTube to watch my Grandma play Skyrim (OK she is not biologically my Grandma but she adopted/treated us like her grandkids).
During this 4 year skip all the way to 2014 and I’ve developed an awesome relationship with Dan for 5 years and I moved out of my parents house in 2011 (I was suffocating in my parents house (my sister was hit by clinical depression and my brother got kicked out of his flat by his knife weilding maniac of a wife) I am an adult and I NEED my own space so what did I get for a housewarming gift? Borderlands 2 (2014) I still have the loot box. But my independence was short lived by my roommate who I shall call William and he was so toxic to me and my friends who come round to visit, there was an incident when I left the house he goes into my room and steals my belongings (I know had to lock my bedroom door) It was Thanksgiving when I was in need of rescuing and William was becoming domestic abusive towards me and Dan’s Dad Scott who was visiting from the States felt a disturbance in the force... he felt that I was in danger and he was right. I had to move into a new flat (I was happy to live on my own) Dan saw it, my parents saw it and even my support workers saw how crappy/unhappy I was. When I moved into my new flat, Dan gave me a parting gift Shovel Knight (2014)
Now 2015 I have picked up the pieces that I’ve lost and rediscovered my sense of self after how much William warped mine for a few years and I’ve finally move on from it. With Dan moving back to the States and I picked up a copy of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt (2015) on a later date (I personally never thought it be be ported onto the Switch) I developed the concept that humans can be monsters (even in politics) and monsters can have a shred of humanity.
With 2017 was was hoping for Persona 5 to be released on Valentines Day but it was rescheduled and for me who has 8th Grader Syndrome (I know when to keep my Chunnibyou dormant and when to let my hair down and embrace it when the time is right) I enjoyed the story of how us millennials and Gen Z get to be viewed as degenerates. With the Wii U going into retirement I got the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and although not entirely my favourite Zelda title... I am a person who loves to have direction/structure and more importantly story (and not just charge into Hyrule Castle and fight Calamity Ganon) to have that amount of freedom and I can easily get distracted “Oooh let’s have a look over there!” I regret not giving Super Mario Odyssey (Honourable Mention) a chance nor gave it a fair shake, I bought the Switch because both of the joy-cons are uniform (I was leaning towards getting the grey but red spoke out to me the loudest).
2018 Super Smash Bros Ultimate need I need to say more? OK, I enjoyed the opening song Lifelight... Everyone is here (to have Roy from Fire Emblem) I even loved seeing the DLC fighters not being exclusive to Nintendo (Atlus) Joker from Persona 5, (Rare) Banjo Kazooie, (Square) ‘Hero’ from the Dragon Quest series, (SNK) Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury... although I wanted the Garou: Mark of the Wolves costume added into the equation.
2019 was the year that hit me hard the most Fire Emblem: Three Houses reminded me that I need to cherish the friends I have, I grew up with them since school and college but we all went on our separate paths. Some are married, some started have a family, some have jobs and some have moved to a different country. When I dumped my old friends that I grew up with since my childhood (but felt left out all the time) for new ones that I known for a decade as adults (and had a lot in common and felt that I was included.) So when Dan died in 2019... I felt a huge piece of me was ripped away from me... the man who exposed me to console gaming... I am never going to see him again.

FFF: Manic Pixie Dream
“Leia, what the fuck.”
Emily was not amused with her roommate/best friend/horrible person. She had warned her when they moved in to keep her stupid schemes out of her way because Emily had to watch kindergarteners for a living and coming home to kindergarten behavior wasn’t fun. Leia had just laughed, which Emily foolishly took as a yes.
Taking in the sight of her apartment, that was a mistake. It seemed that Leia had dug into the very back of her storage unit and unloaded it into their living space. An ancient piano, a bicycle she had never seen Leia ride, and every color and pattern of dishware strewn about. A record player was precariously balanced where their TV usually sat (where was their TV?) and was playing some vague meandering jazz music. And, because her roommate was actually a kindergartener, everything was draped in fairy lights and swaths of cloth and... was that paint on the couch?
“Leia, what fresh hell are you up to now?” Emily yelled into the bedroom, where she could hear her so-called friend shuffling around.
“Coming,” Leia sang. Emily, who was already mentally chronicling a list of obscenities to use, braced herself for Leia’s entrance. It wasn’t enough, because the list was abandoned the moment she pranced in. “How was your day?” Emily could hear the smirk in her voice. Asshole.
“Your hair is blue,” was all that Emily could choke out. And it was true, Leia’s hair was freshly dyed headache-inducing blue. Emily supposed it was so she could match her sundress, which was half-spray painted the same shade. Paired with her borderline tacky pastel eyeshadow, Doc Martens, and what seemed like every piece of jewelry she owned, Leia looked like she invented a new style. Person-Who-Should-Be-In-An-Insane-Asylum-Chic.
“Stellar observation, darling,” Leia tweeted. Fucking tweeted.
“You’re doing a stupid voice.”
“Guilty.”
“And our TV is gone.”
“I hid it in your room.”
“And then hid my door with a bookshelf.”
“And then hid your door with a bookshelf.”
“So are we just going to do this for the next hour or are you going to explain yourself?” Emily deadpanned. Leia tilted her head, her three earrings on each ear jangling with the motion.
“Explain what?” And then Emily lunged forward to strangle her. Luckily, Leia ducked before Emily could commit a horrible crime. “Sorry, sorry! Don’t kill me, please!” Emily just glowered at her. Leia visibly swallowed. “Remember when I came home last week wearing the red A-line and the sneakers and the yellow wig with the glitter?”
“In horrible detail.” Leia had, inexplicably, spilled so much food on her shirt she had to pick something up from the lost and found at the community center, the only decent thing being the dress. The wig was for ‘funsies’.
“Well, the bus was late, and the only person there was this guy that just... exuded beige. So I thought, hey, I look like a crazy person. I’m bored.”
“Leia.”
“And then I started some pseudo-philosophical bullshit about France and then he started making these moony eyes and then I realized he’s a rom-com guy.”
“Oh god.”
“And now he thinks I’m his tragic yet whimsical soulmate here to uplift him and keep him from succumbing to the boredom of the office life and then I got carried away and now the TV’s in your room.” Emily pinched the bridge of her nose. Leia’s been like this ever since they were kids, unintentional cons and all. She could never do anything halfway, she always had to draw it out into some harebrained opera only to be enjoyed by herself and, reluctantly, Emily.
“And what am I?”
“You get to pick?” Leia offered. She seemed genuinely sorry this time. Emily sighed, but scooped some paint off of the couch cushions and tangled it into her hair, twisting it into a simple knot. She was meaning to replace the couch anyway.
“French girl that you had a special connection to ever since you sent me a letter on a whim, and who has traveled to find you only to have to compete with the drab yet caring man you’ve decided to teach liveliness to?” Leia’s eyes sparkled deviously. Emily tried to seem exasperated, but she still readily applied heavy black eyeliner below her eyes for maximum tear streaking.
The pair waited by the door for footsteps, Emily steadily dripping fake tears into her eyes. The telltale sound of loafers on cheap carpet approached. Emily mouthed out a countdown.
“... two, one.”
“Amelie, please,” Leia fluttered, as Emily rapid-fire cussed in French. Slamming the door open, she threw herself forward right into a man in a cheap-looking suit. Huh. He did exude beige.
“Pardon me.” Emily kept her French accent thick, turning back to Leia. She was standing, arm outstretched, eyes widened attractively.
“Uh, Lilian?” The man had dropped the tulips he was holding. Emily recognized them from the bush outside the apartment building.
“Stuart, meet Amelie, Amelie, Stuart.,” Leia breathed, and Emily had to stifle a laugh. The voice was really stupid.

Psycho Killer - Chapter 9 - Boys Better
Summary: Archie Andrews hated when his job took him to high places. Betty Cooper loved when her job took her to posh places. Jughead’s job only took him to dark places. This is a story chronicling the lives of three young hired killers. AU/Majorly OOC, sex, swearing and violence. Jughead x Betty x Archie
Words: 1,478
Warnings: Swearing, sexual situations.
A/N: I edited this myself so there are probably errors. Here is chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 7 and 8 also find the story on AO3.
This was an outcome Jughead had expected but it didn’t mean it hurt any less. It reminded him of something a fellow soldier had said to him during his early days in the army. “Just because I know I could die doesn’t mean I’m any less scared to do it.”
James. His name was James...
Jughead couldn’t remember his last name for the life of him. He did know James was killed in action when he stepped on a hidden land mine. This was after Jughead had been pulled away from basic combat and given the job of interrogation specialist.
It felt like a lifetime ago.
He strode into the locker room needing a shower. He needed to wash the blood and Betty's scent off of him. He opened his locker and stripped naked, throwing his pants inside and fetching a fluffy white towel.
He was thankful it was a slow work day and no one was in the locker room. Not many of the office staff used the showers and it seemed most of the agents were out on assignment.
He stepped into the showers, it was a large room lined with basic white tiles and ten nozzles sprouting from the walls. Jughead claimed the one in the far corner, turning the handle from off to hot. He wanted to burn the last day away. If he couldn’t cleanse himself with fire he would do the next best thing.
He winced as the water cascaded down his body, inflaming his welts and cuts. The pressure was strong and he moaned when the water hit the right spots on his neck and shoulders, loosening his tense muscles.
He blindly felt for the shampoo and squeezed more than he needed into his hand. He massaged his scalp, working the soap into a lather, enjoying the spicy scent. It was refreshing after breathing the stench of sweat and blood for so long.
He went on to condition his hair and wash his body, scrubbing himself clean with a wash cloth.
Jughead decided to stand under the spray until the water ran cold. It was still steaming hot and the area was now foggy, obscuring his figure. He'd be there awhile.
“Hot enough for you?” Archie snarked as he entered the showers as naked as Jughead was.
“I like it hot.” Jughead responded looking over his shoulder taking in his roommates body. Archie’s solid, muscular form was hard not to marvel at. A trail of hair as red as that on his head led to his impressive dick, not as long as Jughead's but with slightly more girth.
“You didn’t spar for that long.” He observed.
“Since both of you ran out of there like bats outta hell, I didn’t really have much of a choice.” Another shower began to run and Jughead soon smelt the scent of sandalwood. It was the combination shampoo and body wash Archie always used.
“Did Betty say anything to you?” He asked, his back to him still.
“No,” Archie said, “would she have anything she’d need to tell me?” He asked, the sound of water erratically hitting the tiles beneath them.
“No, we went at it pretty hard, though.” Jughead commented not sure what else to say. "So she might have been pissed or regretful."
There was a long silence between the two of them, it was so long he thought Archie may have left. Jughead tensed when strong fingers began to caress the welts on his back.
“She certainly did a number on you, didn’t she?” Archie commented, continuing to touch him.
Jughead relaxed. “Yeah, she got a few good hits in.” He responded.
“That’s not what I meant.” He whispered compassionately.
Jughead looked over his shoulder. Archie’s brown eyes were looking up at him through his lashes, a knowing smile on his face.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Jughead asked looking forward again.
Archie lips drifted over his wounds. “I’m not an idiot Jughead. Something happened between you two.” He planted a kiss on his shoulder. “What happened?”
“I went down on her.” Jughead responded bluntly.
“She can be so ungrateful sometimes.” Archie commented, running his hands down Jughead’s muscular sides.
“You’re not mad?” He asked. His voice shaky as Archie fingers caressed Jughead’s chest and stomach, pushing his body flush against Jughead’s back. He could feel Archie’s prominent erection pressing against his lower back.
“I wanted this to happen. All of it. Don’t you want this to happen?” Archie whispered, grasping Jughead’s dick in his hand.
Jughead moaned and placed one of his hands against the tile in front of him. “I want this to happen.” He admitted as Archie began stroking the length of Jughead’s cock.
“It can be like this, you know. You, me, Betty.” Archie kissed him wherever he could. “Can you imagine it? Lying in bed all day, naked, tangled up together. Imagine her moans as you bury yourself deep inside her, while I bury myself deep inside of you.” Archie sunk his teeth into the skin between the Jughead’s neck and shoulder.
Jughead let out a shuddering gasp at the thought, Archie’s stroking speeding up, his orgasm building.
“Is that something you’d like?” Archie asked, hooking his arm under Jughead’s armpit and over his shoulder, pushing their bodies even closer together.
“Yes.” Jughead stuttered out, putting his other hand on the wall steadying himself, knowing his was about to cum. He wasn't going to fake it like the night before.
Archie quickened his motions, continuing to brush the raven haired mans back with his lips.
“Arch…” Jughead breathed.
“Let go, baby, cum for me.” Archie encouraged. "You need this."
Jughead let out a deep groan as thick white spurts of ejaculate hit the white tiles in front of him. It ran down the wall and past both of their feet, disappearing down the drain.
He let out an unsteady breath as a feeling of ecstasy coursed through him. It had been so long since he had been touched the way Archie had touched him. Everyone he could remember being with had always been in it for themselves. Jughead could have been anyone and the person he was with would have been just as happy. No one cared if he was enjoying himself, that he got his too.
Jughead turned, cradled Archie’s face in his hands and looked into his eyes. “Why did you do that? Why aren’t you mad?” He asked.
Archie chuckled. “You are terrible at reading social cues. Jug, I've wanted you for so long.” Archie stood on his tippy toes to close the height difference between the two and kissed him. Their lips were soft and wet against the each others, skin warm from the water. Archie’s erection pushing up against Jughead’s taut stomach.
The kiss intensified, Jughead aggressively pushing Archie up against the wall. “I really wish you could see yourself like I see you.” The redhead breathed between each meeting of lips. “But there’s something missing, wouldn’t you say?”
Jughead moved away and looked at him with a furrowed brow. “Betty?”
Archie nodded slowly.
“I just told you she’s not interested.” Jughead reiterated with a bite of anger.
“Yes, she is. Betty is a very cautious girl when it comes to things that matter to her. She hasn’t told you about how she got into this business did she?” He asked.
Jughead shook his head.
“She will but that’s not my story to tell. It might make a little more sense then.” Archie kissed him again, his fingers running down Jughead’s muscular arms. “And sex can complicate things but it won’t, not for us.”
“I wish I could believe you.” Jughead lamented pushing the wet red locks away from Archie’s face, moving his fingers down and along his jawline.
“Believe me, I know her, I know you. I promise, in a few weeks time your life is going to be very different.” Archie left a lingering kiss on his roommate lips and took a step away from him. “Let me take care of it. Betty’s teetering on the edge, she just needs a little push.”
Archie began to leave the showers and was stopped by Jughead’s voice. “You’re not forcing her into anything, right Arch?” He looked at the redhead over his shoulder.
His lips pulled up into his signature smirk. “You can force someone to do something they already want to do. Finish up in here, Bets and I will meet you by the doors.”
Archie left the room and Jughead looked around, the steam had gone when the water had started to run cold. If someone were to walk in at that moment they would have no idea what he was just doing and who he was doing it with. They wouldn’t know that Archie was right and their lives were about to change, in more ways in one.

kinktober day 9 - frottage
title: care for you (could be a good excuse) [ao3: here]
fandom: Shadowhunters (TV)
main pairing: Jace/Simon
rating: T, for drinking and non-explicit sexual content.
word count: ~1300 words
written for: kinktober 2017, using the prompt ‘frottage,’ and for inktober for writers 2017, using the prompt ‘strings’
short summary/tags: A chronicle of the various excuses Jace comes up with to explain why he keeps sleeping with Simon.
Spoiler alert: he runs out of good ones quite quickly.
Tags: human au, college/university au, drunk sex, getting together, 5 things, happy ending.
The first time it happens, Jace has an irrefutable excuse when the morning after comes around.
Said excuse has more than a little to do with the hangover pounding at his temples and unsettling his stomach, the first one he’s had in years.
&.
The Hunter’s Moon is packed with people from wall to wall, crowded around the pool tables two deep, pressed up against the bar, arms waving in the air for service. It’s somebody’s birthday-
(whose birthday, Jace doesn’t exactly remember, even before he starts drinking)
-and the air is buzzing with celebration. Every so often, the room fills with raucous cheers as somebody offers to buy a round of shots for the entire bar, and the mood is just so damn festive that it’s hard to keep from being swept away on it like a wave at the beach.
So Jace doesn’t resist.
When the free rounds of shots are announced, he indulges gratefully, whenever he can shoulder his way up to the bar. Every so often, one of his friends passes by and shoves another drink into his hands, and who is he to say no?
By the time he realizes that he’s unsteady on his feet, he’s lost count of how many drinks he’s had, but he knows that he only paid for four of them.
He drifts through the crowd when he can, but it’s easier said than done; the sheer amount of people packed into the bar has to violate the fire code. Eventually, buffeted along by the tide, he ends up in the corner of the bar furthest from the front door, crowded into a booth with eight other people. He doesn’t know either of the girls sitting between him and the wall, both of whom seem to have a strong case of the giggles.
But on his other side, pressed right against him and still almost falling off the seat, one arm slung around the top of the booth that keeps falling down to drape across Jace’s shoulders, is Simon.
Simon from his Introductory Film Studies class, the one Jace had taken because nothing else fit into his schedule with his fourth year history and psychology classes.
Simon, who talks too much in class, who would probably teach the class if he could get away with it.
Simon, who actually does his share of the work (and more, sometimes) when they’ve been thrown together for group projects.
Simon, who not only smells good but also looks good in dark jeans and a deep blue button-up over a black t-shirt, dark hair slicked away from his forehead, glasses slipping down his nose, smile bright enough to light up a whole damn city, just as drunk as Jace.
In retrospect, frankly, Jace is surprised that they didn’t end up in the alley out back sooner, mere inches away from a fetid dumpster, clumsily frotting against each other until they both come in their pants like teenagers having their first time.
How he gets home is a little bit of a blur, but when he awakens the next morning, his memory of what happened is all too clear.
He blames it on the booze and doesn’t bother to send Simon a text about the subject.
He doesn’t get one in return.
When Simon comes to class on Monday, he takes a seat two spots away from Jace, talks just as much as normal, and when they are told to get into groups to discuss the film they were supposed to watch over the weekend, he slides over and immediately starts giving Jace his opinion.
But he doesn’t bring up the alley, and neither does Jace.
&.
The second time it happens, he has a different excuse.
Unfortunately, this one has far less to do with alcohol and festivities.
&.
It’s a Friday night, and he has his shared suite in the upper-years residence to himself, roommate back home visiting their parents for the weekend. He has a textbook spread across his lap and his phone resting in his hand, displaying a message from Izzy that’s so long Jace has to scroll to read the entire thing.
Despite the length, the message can really be summed up in the first sentence.
Dad had an affair, and Mom is filing for divorce.
He reads the message over and over again, tries to think of how to respond, and eventually gives up in favor of tossing the phone across the room, where it thankfully lands in his laundry basket. His parents have never had a perfect relationship, spent so much time arguing that Jace learned long ago to simply tune it out, but an affair?
He should call Alec or Izzy. Maybe even his mom, see how she’s doing, if there’s anything he can do to help her. Any of those options would be the right thing to do.
And he will do them. Eventually.
But first, to keep himself from calling his father and exploding on him, he needs a distraction.
He’s just reached for his gym bag when there’s a knock on the door.
Simon is standing on the other side, rubbing at the back of his neck, holding his tablet in his hand.
“Hey! Have you had any luck finding a stream for The-”
Jace wraps his fingers into the front of Simon’s obnoxious graphic t-shirt, yanks him in close, and kisses him until he can’t breathe.
When Simon pulls away, cheeks flushed almost comically red, his eyes are owlishly large behind his glasses, and there’s a grin slowly spreading across his face.
“Okay,” he says, pushing his glasses up his nose. “Okay, sure. I can work with this.”
With that, Jace tugs him into his room and kicks the door shut.
Monday dawns bright and sunny, but fall is unmistakably on the way, present in the orange leaves falling from the trees dotting the campus and the brisk wind that keeps finding its way through Jace’s layers as he walks to class.
This time, Simon takes the seat right next to him.
But they don’t talk about it.
&.
The third time it happens, Simon’s hands are Jace’s excuse.
&.
He walks into the Hunter’s Moon on a Thursday night, which happens to be Open Mic night, apparently. Simon is onstage, perched on a stool, strumming an acoustic guitar. After making a few adjustments to the tuning pegs, he waves to the group of people clustered around the stage at the back of the bar, and launches into a song. His voice is clear and confident, fills the room from wall to wall, and his long fingers move effortlessly along the strings, forming chords and picking out notes effortlessly. It seems to be a song of his own creation, so Jace doesn’t know if Simon makes any mistakes, but he certainly doesn’t make any obvious ones, doesn’t fumble with his hand placement or stutter.
Such talent deserves to be appreciated, and that’s the only reason Jace offers to walk Simon home once the show is over.
Really. That’s the only reason.
(They end up making out against the wall just inside the door of Simon’s tiny apartment, jackets shrugged to the floor even though there are coat hooks mere inches away.
“One of these days, I’m going to get you into my bed,” Simon gasps against Jace’s mouth, just as he pops open the button on Jace’s pants.
Jace doesn’t bother to rebut him.)
&.
As for the fourth time...
Well, Jace has an excuse.
Really. He does.
A damn good excuse.
He just can’t quite remember what it is.
(He blames that on how absurdly talented Simon’s mouth is.)
&.
By the fifteenth time, the only excuse Jace has left is that he likes Simon. Really likes him, even if he does talk too much in class, even if his opinions on the movies they watch in class are always the total opposite of Jace’s, even if he has a penchant for kicking Jace hard in his sleep.
And Jace is...
Well. Jace is actually completely fine with that particular excuse.

Our Story
December 2028
Claire was 36 when she saw New York City for the first time. A weekend trip—the city’s dreamers dumped into the dependable wombs of their parents’ basements; the Wall Street scions into the greens of gated Connecticut. Two days that are only distinguishable by the fact that her decisions—to walk in the rain without an umbrella, to buy a Chinatown souvenir—were not shadowed by Frank’s judgment.
For the first time since Frank’s death, Claire was on a trip, alone. She had one suitcase, and a hotel bed to herself. For the first time, she could adjust the thermostat without complaint—set herself to freezing or to boiling, and damn what anyone else had to say about it. She could use every closet hanger, order room service without Frank’s worried appraisal of the menu prices. The dissatisfied cluck over a third, offensive digit.
“I’d like the fettuccine please. With a side of fries. Oh, and a bottle of Chianti. Yes. Yes, the whole bottle.”
It was a freedom that felt fresh when she took a shower (the complimentary shampoo and conditioner, all hers), and which rotted—just slightly—at the sight of the two unused towels. She unfolded them, set one under the faucet, swept a streak of foundation across the other. Better.
Her second and last night there, and it was dark. She drew the curtains, heard the chains clinking as the vertical blinds swayed to reveal the—
No. Not the city she was expecting, but a sudden fog. Thick and impenetrable, even the gleam of the Empire’s spire was hidden behind its cloud. Windows were blurred, merely shapes of half-hearted light inside an apocalyptic limbo. All this blank space where there’d once been buildings, standing cheek by jowl like J-train passengers.
It was, in that moment, an unsettling sight. How could the world vanish without a trace, and she none the wiser? She’d been slurping a bowl of fettuccine just an hour before—when had New York left her behind? When had it disappeared?
Twenty-five years later—Jamie’s diagnosis no longer new, but still a sting—she thinks of this night: the missing city, taken by a thief under a cloak of darkness. It is how she pictures her husband’s brain, the only way she can understand its fickle progressions and regressions: The life erased by a fog she cannot see through, but which dissipates and then reconvenes without any discernible pattern.
And in this scenario, Claire is there, back in New York City—not noticing her diminishment within it (in the only mind that matters).
She is too blind, too oblivious as the world fades, building by building. Too busy eating a bowl of fettuccine to realize everything she knows is going, going—gone.
They refer to the incident as “the big house fire.” It is an event chronicled between whispering neighbors, fellow parishioners, in the butcher shop on Healy Lane. The story has become a rusted scythe, worn down by every tongue that has remolded it—still slightly sharp, though, under the right circumstances. (Even an old saw will do its job if its victim is vulnerable enough.)
And while “the big house fire” does, in just four words, describe what happened—Claire and Jamie’s woodland castle reduced to rubble—it is not the most accurate version of the story.
If they were to tell it, in full and with absolute transparency, they would mention Claire’s flight home. How she’d been tucking into a packet of Oreos when the phone rang: There’s been an accident, and had run out of the hotel without her luggage and her shoes. (She will remember her scraped big toe, bleeding into the taxi carpet, until the day she dies.)
The Frasers would also recall how she’d shut the plane’s window shade—how she’d refused to look at the school of shrinking cars. Their ongoing movement, she’d thought then, had suggested a galling lack of compassion.
They would also talk about Bree, just sitting down to a dinner with Roger. Scallops, bought fresh from the market, and Italian wine to celebrate the semester. Their plates, once piled high, had disappeared in their absence, Bree’s roommates picking at the food abandoned for a North Carolina hospital. There’s been an accident.
And if the Frasers were truly brave enough, they would mention the diagnosis: Jamie, aged 60 and patient #123. The candle, which he cannot remember lighting, and Adso, whom he often does not remember owning, knocking over Red Apple Wreath in the night. (A sheet of ice had slid off the roof, startling the dog. Funny, how such innocence can beget such tragedy.)
It was her friend, Denzell Hunter, who had been there first, tending to the burns that had branded Jamie’s back. And it was Denny who broke the news to Claire, the pair of them sipping spiked coffee in his office. The chair, with its one rickety leg, had barely held her when he’d said, We think this is a sign. (The heavy, leaden core of her had grown heavier still.)
“How long before it all goes?” she’d asked some time later, and even though Denny had made to answer, she’d gone on. As if, in the face of something so incomprehensible, clarification could stop the monster infecting Jamie’s brain. “How long before he won’t remember anything?”
“I don’t know, Claire,” Denny had said. A hand on her shoulder, on her knee. More weight to carry, dragging her to the floor. “It’s impossible to say. A couple years, maybe?”
The sound she’d made, then. If someone were to describe it, they might use such words as:
Devastated.
Destroyed.
Unhinged.
(It was all of these things, at once, and more.)
“Can I see him?”
Claire had paused before entering Jamie’s room, half-expecting the expression of confusion, Who are you?, she’d feared all afternoon. She watched him from the doorway, searching for the evidence she had not seen and which had become its own sort of beast in her mind: Guilt.
But what she saw, instead, was this: Jamie’s same eyes, Jamie’s same mouth. His same voice, saying her name. The same, the same, all still the same.
She whispered, face crumpling, “You’re here.”
And the image of them, then: her forehead pressed into his same chest; his same hand on her shaking shoulders as he says, in his same voice, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”
If someone were to paint it, they would use the starkest, most sterile white. The brightest blue for Jamie’s eyes, somehow made brighter by his tears. A tiny spec of red—blood on Claire’s sleeve, from washing the cuts on her feet.
If someone were to name it, they would have difficulty calling it anything but what it clearly, inevitably, dishearteningly was:
Beginning of the End.
Jamie is sent home a week later. His thighs, patched like a quilt of skin—raw, untouched, raw, untouched—from the grafts taken for his back. All of him, raw as a newborn, and so at odds with the eroding mind inside his head.
Claire’s eyes swim as they drive away from the hospital, and do not spill until she turns onto a certain gravel road. Pure instinct taking them through the trees, past the fallen oak where, on an autumn night, she had finally told him what she’d always meant to. (“I was born for you.”)
Realization dawns in a flood of ghostly sound: footsteps in the study, the languid pour of milk. Flesh slapping flesh, as Jamie takes her over the kitchen island. All of it, a story given to the past tense, now existing in the dust motes floating between the trees. (There was nothing waiting for them at the end of that gravel road. A breath of snow and ashes—only a piece of blue porcelain left unscathed.)
It is then that Claire begins to weep.
“Don’t you bloody do that to me ever again, do you hear me?” she hiccups, the car rolling to a stop. “Don’t scare me like that ever again.”
(He does not say he won’t.)
“I thought I’d lost you, Jamie,” she whispers quietly. “And if I’d lost you, I—”
“You didn’t,” he replies, looking at her. And when she shudders, he feels like saying it again. “You didn’t lose me, mo chridhe. Promise.”
Claire’s hand reaches for his, and so he brings it to his lips, kisses the knuckles, then the ring he’s wrapped there not once, but twice (a thousand times). I’m here. And Jamie does not wince as he leans over to kiss her tears, just as he had not said that she wouldn’t, eventually, lose him. That she couldn’t, eventually, live without him.
(She would. She could. Eventually.)
#welp i did not mean for this to be so sad but it's a transitional chapter promise#for once i'm actually quite jazzed about writing the next one#our story au#;mod liv

Heyyy you were asking for recs for the Fire Breathing Roommate right???
Imagine Mitsuki coming to reader and Katsuki’s apartment for his birthday and reader’s like who is THIS goddess at my doorstep like- And Katsuki’s like: Babe- that’s my mother.
I just think it would be SO FUNNY to try to celebrate Katsuki’s birthday the way humans do - because I bet dragons celebrate them very differently. So when reader gives him a big wrapped box and a cake that’s ON FIRE he’s like OH MY GOD THE WORLD IS ENDING
oh my god. you are literally a GENIUS THIS IS SOOOO GOOD AND HONESTLY ADORABLE !!! i had sm fun writing this n i hope you enjoy ! <3 if you guys have any more fbbcXtra requests, feel free to send em to me !! ps. this was way longer than i planned it to be which is funny cus this is supposed to be a mini extra's series, but oh well ! i had fun writing ! and i hope you enjoy reading as well !
♡ extra #2 : birthday battle ♡
in which : you celebrate katsuki’s birthday but you end up getting a surprise.
you wake up like usual in the morning, enjoying your day off as you laze around in bed, shuffling the most you can with the big dragon man’s arms around you, snuggly trapping you in his snake like hold and his tail warm and draped on top of your legs beneath the sheets.
just like usual, except things are a little different today and you crack a smile when you manage to free your head from his iron grip.
today is katsuki’s birthday.
he'd told you about it a few month ago in passing, and ever since you found out you'd planned everything meticulously, hence your day off, so you could make his first birthday here as memorable as possible.
you look up at his relaxed sleeping face with a soft smile, before pressing a small kiss to his chin. then another one to his nose and you giggle quietly when his nose twitches. he grouses quietly in response when you lean up and kiss him again, the corner of his mouth, his cheeks and the ones on his eyelids make him grumble. his arms around your waist squeeze.
"s'too early fer you to be botherin' me, human.." the blonde man slurs. one of his red eyes opens to peek at your smiling face, your smile widening seeing him awake. you press another kiss to the tip of his nose and he grunts in appreciation.
"s'never too early to wish a happy birthday to my dragon man." you croon. katsuki closes his eyes at your affection, but his eyebrows furrow in confusion and his grip on you gets tighter somehow.
"that's what you woke me up for ?"
"of course it is, it's your birthday !" he flops down onto his back on the bed and you break out of his hold to sit up, leaning on your shoulder to watch him. he throws an arm over his eyes but the one closest to you feels around the bed for you.
"babe, it's really not that big of a deal." he utters simply.
he'd told you, and you'd assumed, that dragons celebrate and see birthdays way differently than humans do. it's somewhat of a celebration, but not for very long. dragonshifter where usually raised to be able to hold their own; being taught to be indepented and skilled fighters from a very young age.
"it depends from faction to faction," is what he'd said, "but birth celebrations usually don't last any longer than a few minutes. and we don't do whole birthdays like you do. most ya get is a pat on the back and the most to eat for dinner." he had shrugged. a frown pulled at your face and he smirked at you, ruffling your hair as he told you not to get 'all mopey' for him, and that he didn't mind. but in that moment your mind was set.
you'd get him to experience a human birthday. and it'd be his best one ever.
you pout at him, nudging his arms and he groans despite only barely budging like jello. "it is a big deal ! i wanna be able to celebrate with you." you place your head on his chest. he lifts his arm just a bit to look at you. "birthdays are so much fun, i wanna show you that..i planned everything out too-"
"you planned this out ?" he squints.
"-pleaseee ?" you plead, ignoring his earlier question. the blonde huffs out a large sigh and covers his eyes again.
"fine. what am i g'nna do with you ?" he concedes to himself quietly, but he grabs at your waist and pulls at it, signalling for you to shuffle up towards him. you do, until your face to face with him and he sighs again, eyes softened.
"since it's my birthday, i can do what i want right ?"
"mostly, yeah. no burning anyone though." you poke his nose and giggle when he scoffs a sharp click of his teeth in annoyance.
"whatever, how 'bout you just let me sleep in then ?" he snarks.
"i can do that." you grin back at him and he tries to lean in just enough to bite your nose, but he doesn't lean far enough and simply throws his head back in defeat. you laugh and since it's his birthday, you'll let him have it, so you lean in a bit closer to his face. he takes a modest chomp at your nose and you roll your eyes with a huff at the tired smirk on his face like he'd won some type of prize. and despite his sleepy eyes he still manages to lean in again to rub his nose against yours in lazy greeting. you close your eyes and sigh at his ministrations.
but of course, your katsuki cannot live with himself if his not being a little shit and he yawns in your face. you smack a hand over his mouth and groan in disgust. he just laughs into your hand, then he bites at your palm.
"can you be not-insufferable for at least five minutes after you wake up ?" you whine, childishly wiping your hand onto his tank top.
"no can do baby, s'my birthday." the shit eating grin on his face almost makes you regret introducing him to the concept of human birthdays as a whole. almost though, because unfortunately this absolute demon man has your heart fitted nicely into the palm of his hand.
"you are truly something else." you grumble. katsuki snickers at your annoyance. "mhmm. hurry up an' gimme a kiss." he says but doesn't even give you a chance to respond when he grabs the back of your head and brings you to his lips, you don't put up much resistance either. he makes a forced face when you pull away.
"your breath smells like shit."
"you should absolutely not be talking."
the day has been going extremely well. you'd done what katsuki wanted today. which consisted of sleeping in. having his favorite for breakfast and some birthday pancakes, courtesy of you, which he gobbled up in the blink of an eye. watching his favorite movie to make fun of at the moment and taking a nap again. before going out for a birthday lunch and a (extremely tiring) hike all before dinner. the dinner and hike where set up by you. you could tell he enjoyed the activities even if he hadn't knocked his forehead to yours with a kiss to your forehead and a big blush on his face as thanks, but it was a very nice plus.
katsuki's lazing around on the couch asking you which show you want to watch while you're busying yourself with his secret chocolate fudge birthday cake. you plan to give it to him later tonight. you hide it behind a big tupperware box after checking to see if it was still intact. "just pick whatever !" you call loud enough for him to hear. carefully placing the bakery box back behind all of the other foods.
"i can't pick whatever, 'ts why i'm asking you !" you roll your eyes at his sass, a smile pulls at your face at the idea of a little revenge.
"it's your birthday, so figure something out !" you sing, he doesn't respond but growls loud enough for you to faintly hear it, and soon enough you hear a bunch of netflix prequels playing in quick succesion. you can't help but giggle.
then you hear the doorbell ring. and then again, longer and louder. it's way louder than you ever thought was possible and you wondered if it was maybe time to change some type of batteries or maybe have your boyfriend fix it for you.
"ugh, i'll get it !" you groan. you mutter a bitter 'yeah, yeah, i'm coming.' at the door. sachi definitely doesn't ring your doorbell like..that. and the only friend of katsuki's who'd probably ring the doorbell like this is kaminari, since for some reason he seems to be fixated on loud noises and specifically the noises your doorbell makes.
then you swing your door open and your met with katsuki. except a little bit taller and also a woman.
you have to blink to realise that that's not your katsuki at the door because he's already inside scrolling through shows and movies. rather, it's someone who looks extremely similar to him. the same blonde hair and same piercing red eyes and that same hardened stare. and of course, those fiery red horns and matching tail, altough hers was a little slimmer. she's extremely gorgeous.
you blink and gasp, words won't come out and the woman simply stares like she's analyzing you. you think you see the tiniest of smiles break into her face but you turn your head too quickly to tell.
"katsukiiiii !" you call "there's a very gorgeous dragon lady here who looks exactly like you ! "
in an instant it's like he teleported over to you, already in a fighting stance until he realizes who's at the door and you presume she's here for, and knows, him. his shoulders slum forward and an almost guilty expression crosses his face when he sees your widely blown eyes.
"do you know her???" you whisper yell. you forget the woman is right in front of you and can most definetly hear you, not to mention her superior hearing. katsuki exhales.
"babe.." katsuki winces apologetically "that's..my mom."
huh????
katsuki's mom hasn't stopped touching you since she got here 10 minutes ago.
from what you'd heard from your boyfriend his mother was a ruthless, aggressive stubborn and strict 'old bat' (you quickly scolded him about the way he adressed his mother) but from what you're experiencing now, this was anything but the case, though katsuki had the habit of being quite the unreliable narrator.
because ever since you'd brought her into your apartment, she has not gotten her hands off of you. to the great displeasure of your boyfriend, who's sitting on the kitchen chair glaring at the tv with his head resting against his palm and tapping his foot. when you'd went to bow to greet her she quickly scooped you up in her arms, shaking you around in her arms like a ragdoll with such force katsuki growled at her to let you go. you can't tell if being so affectionate is truly a dragon thing or if it runs in the family.
"oh aren't you just such a sweetheart !" she squeals, grabbing onto your shoulder to bring you closer to her and you squeak at the force. her slit eyes scanning over every corner of your face and she hums.
"mhmm, very good.." she pinches your cheeks between her pointer and thumb and tilts your face around, continuing to exam you. "oh, and so soft an' squishy too, like a little dumpling !" she coo's, smiling softly at you. she's a little rough, but she means well, you think. at least that's what you try to think when she suddenly grabs at your jaw to pry your mouth open. you let out a surprised gutteral noise but mitsuki doesn't seem the least bit fazed, she keeps humming to herself like a doctor. it's stupid but you're a little embarrassed because you'd recently eaten and you don't think your breath smells the best, she doesn't seem to mind that either.
"hmm..teeth aren't very sharp though.." she pouts, before a smile shines back onto her face as if to reassure you "that's okay though, sweetheart ! we can probably do something about that-"
suddenly a hand grabs at the woman's wrist and pulls her away from you and it's none other than katsuki. you smack a few times to readjust the slight pain in your jaw and you look up to see the two shifters in a heated stare down. it kinda looks ike a mirror trick because they're just so similar, it almost makes your head spin.
"quit touchin' on her old hag, at the rate you're going you'll break her fuckin' jaw." katsuki spits, dropping his mom's wrists with furrowed brows. his expression mirrors her own as she stands up to glare down at him fiercely. her eyes locking on yours make you flinch but a second passes and her face morphs, she's smiling. mitsuki grabs the top of her son's head and playfully (you hope..) smacks it a couple times, he snarls and growls but she ignores him in favor of giggling at you.
"he can be quite the brat sometimes, am i right ?!" her forced chuckles quickly turn into her pinching her son's cheeks with gritted teeth and a tick mark on her forehead. katsuki's complaint and what looks like to be an almost scorching grip on her wrist is ignored, she ignores him like he's a mere insect on her shoulder and keeps talking to you like he isn't there. "i hope he doesn't cause you too much trouble ? i know my son is a lot to handle." she asks, her sweet tone of voice returns and you sit up straighter. despite the..interesting first impression you still want your boyfriend's mother to like you.
"oh no, not at all ! katsuki's a sweetie." you smile and she coo's at you like a baby. she laughs like you'd just told her a joke and she pinches at her son's face to get his attention "heh. a real sweetie, eh ?" she mocks, raising a brow. katsuki finally manages to rip her hand off his face and he all but growls at her.
"shut up ! what're you even here for ?!" katsuki's complaint is grumbled as he shoves his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants. the only thing differentiating the two of them is that katsuki is currently hiding his tail, it gets in the way around your small apartment and he says it's annoying to sit with it on the couch and he hates tearing holes in his pants, so he mostly only has his horns out. horns identical to his mothers that point back when she raises her nose up at him with a dissapointed huff.
"oh please, it feels like everyone's been able to see your human den besides me !" she exclaims, resting her hands on her waist. "is it so bad that i wanted to come visit my son, and on his birthday of all days !" she huffs. katsuki scrunches his nose up in response. mitsuki continues, she fixes her warm gaze onto you and you blink up at her in surprise. she immediatly chippers up and swoops down to pick you up and hug you.
"and when was it you where planning on introducing me to your mate, and one who's such a cutie at that !" she rubs her cheeks against yours and you're glad she isn't lifting you off the ground but the way she's leaning over you makes your back hurt and has you gripping her arms. a bad decision since she thinks you're returning her affection and squeezes you harder. she glares at her son "as your mother-"
"urrghh-" he groans
"-and the one who practically set you up, i think you should've invited me sooner." she chides, patting at your head. katsuki's almost pout and slouched back reminds you of a little kid getting scolded. you supress a snort when you make eye contact and his frown deepens when you throw him a questioning lifted brow, he just shrugs and looks away again.
"pops hasn't been here yet either." he shrugs off, adjusting to cross his arms.
"you know how nervous your father gets katsuki." mitsuki scoffs, rolling her eyes at her son's comment. said son mirrors her expression, they seriously make your head spin.
"whatever. you came, you saw-" katsuki starts, heading over to rip you away from his mom's grip with minor resistance. "ya put yer paws all over my mate," he growls bitterly, giving you a firm squeeze before letting you go but never too far away from you. “so you can go now.” he says through gritted teeth and squinting eyes.
mitsuki scoffs, dramatically placing her hand onto her chest and even leans back a bit "how rude !" her wide eyes fix themselves to you and you instinctively nod, earning you a growl from the man next to you.
"while it is true i came here to see where you're living, i did come all the way here to wish my son, a happy birthday." she accentuates, putting extra intonation on specific words and every time she does katsuki shrinks into himself a bit. though after a moment he raises a brow
"there's no way you came all the way here just to wish me happy birthday." he deadpanned "what do you want ?" suddenly a smirk crosses the older woman's face and you see how on guard katsuki gets. you start getting a little nervous when stances start getting more..combative.
"do you think that ill of me, katsuki ? i'm hurt you'd thinkso little of me.. i even brought a gift too.." you start to realise how her horns starts to glow as she also backs up a bit, seeming ready to pounce. you hear katsuki scoff out a laugh and your head whips around to stare at the two. two big wings suddenly sprawl from the woman's back, your dragon man grins, doing the same and you realize-
where they planning to fight in your apartment ????
"woah, woah, woah, woah, WOAH." you get in between the both, frantically waving your arms around (you realize this is the second time you've stood in between two dragons now). immediately there's a shift. the tension remains, both blondes staying on guard but gazes fixed onto you.
"what're you guys planning to do ?!" you lock eyes with the older bakugou and shrink back "..if i may ask.." you squeak out. she giggles at your cuteness.
"oh, don't worry darling, this is totally normal ! i know you humans aren't familiar with birthday battles, but they're harmless, really !" she chirps.
"BIRTHDAY BATTLES???" you shriek, whipping your head around to see katsuki unfazed. he simply shrugs at you and your eye twitches at his nonchalance.
"it's fine. m'stronger than her anyways." he waves off, his mother barks out a laugh.
"hah ! is that the hill you wanna die on ?!" she challenges, your boyfriend has the nerve to try to respond until you cut him off before he can.
"katsuki. you are not battling in the house." you squeak, voice pitched high in distress. katsuki, the dragon man who was just about to fight his mother, apparently to the death, has the gall to pout at you.
"it'll be fine, i'll just fix it later." he grumbles.
"and where am i supposed to be while you guys fight to the death ?!" you say, your arms are still spread out like this could somehow stop the two beasts from duking it out should they decide to right now. his shoulders drop, his horns dimming. he pouts harder and you can already see what's coming.
"katsuki-"
"'ts my birthday."
"katsuki. don't-"
"you said i could do what i want."
"but i didn't think you'd do this ??" you try helplessly, giving him your best puppy dog eyes as a last ditch effort. incredibly stubborn as he is,katsuki doesn't budge. you pause to think.
it is his birthday.
and you did want to make his birthday as enjoyable as possible..and if it meant fighting with his mom would accomplish that, then so be it.
you sigh, loudly, and you want to hate the pleased little smirk on your rabid boyfriend's face so bad. but unfortunately, you can't. and that makes you sigh again.
"fine," you look up at him seriously "but not here. i'm sure you can find a field so you can..duke it out. don't get too injured." your boyfriend scoffs boastfully at your words, he pulls you in and wraps a strong arm around your waist, pulling you in. he seems to forget his mom's presence, who's now staring at you both with a smirk. you grip at his shoulders in embarrassment.
"nah, i told you i'm stronger." he says simply, kissing your cheek hard and sloppily "gonna come cheer me on ?" he offers, teasing smile on display.
"i fear i'd die of a heart attack, so i'm gonna sit this one out." you sweatdrop, patting his chest. he grunts in dissaproval but quickly shrugs it off, pressing a kiss to your head before fixing his fiery gaze onto his mother. "well, you gonna chicken out ?" he jeers.
"don't you underestimate your mother." she flashes you a loving grin, walking over to you and pressing her forehead to yours quickly and you feel your whole body warm up happily "it was wonderful meeting you dear. i hope you'll let me visit again soon."
"hell no."
"of course !" you and katsuki respond in unison. as expected mitsuki ignores her son's words and grins at you again. before she leaves she wraps you up in one of her tight hugs, thanks you for taking care of her son, then follows katsuki to the front door. the blond quickly throwing out a "i'll be back later !" loud enough for you to hear and you wave them off before you hear the door click shut. when they leave you heave a long sigh.
that was definitely one way to meet his mother, but you're at least happy it went well.
you truly hope this birthday battle really as harmless as mitsuki claimed it was, though..
after a few hours katsuki returns. not heavily injured, but extremely dirty and with tears in his clothes.
"katsuki !" you whine, walking over and inspecting his upper body and sleepy albeit satisfied face. you grab his face between your palms to get him to look at you. he closes his eyes, "i told you not to get injured !"
he simply huffs and nuzzles into your palm "m'not injured though. can see it can't you ?" he points towards his very exposed chest and his eyes shine mischievously at your flustered splutters. before you can get another complaint in he shoves his head into your shoulder and you squeal, pushing him away.
"no-katsuki, no." he growls lowly at your denial "you're dirty. go shower."
"s'my birthday-"
"you're stinky, birthday or not. you can't keep using that as an excuse you know." you snort, trying your best to stay firm, you quickly check the clock "your birthday's almost over by now." you push at his shoulders so he wouldn't get the opportunity to get comfy and try to coax you into cuddling with him.
he grumbles something unintelligible before lifting his head up to simply stare at you. "did you win ?" you ask and he huffs but he smirks
"nah, almost got her though."
"well, there's always next year."
he squints, scrunching his nose up at your words "she's not coming here next year." you squeeze his scrunched up nose and he pretends to bite at you. "stop being so mean to your mom."
"m'gonna go shower." he ignores you and you roll your eyes as you watch his tail trail behind him to your bedroom to get a change of clothes before making his way to the bathroom.
as soon as the door clicks shut you jump into motion. you bound over to the kitchen, reaching the fridge you slowly pull the chocolate fudge cake out. placing the candles on it carefully, sticking out your tongue for utmost focus. you're happy with the positioning, leaning back to admire your work. afterwards you quickly search for a lighter, and place it next to the cake, you smile when you hear the faucet turn off, just in time.
when katsuki comes out, hair still wet and puffy wearing a simple grey lounge sweater and sweatpants, you're standing in front of him. he raises a brow at your bright smile, he tilts his head back questioningly "what's up ?" he asks, suspecting some type of trick. but he was in for a surprise.
you lean forwards and grab both his hands to drag him over to the couch. "come on." you urge, pulling him along but keeping your gaze fixed on him. a huff of laughter through his nose, he barely supresses a curious smile at your giggles "what ?" he asks again when your closer to the couch.
"just siddown." you push him down rather harshly and he grunts in surprise. "i'll be right back !" before he can say anything you sprint to the kitchen and bring back his cake. "tadaaa !" you exclaim. his eyes widen.
"what's the cake for ?" he asks gruffly and you shake your head. "s'for you, silly !" you giggle. his confused stare has you explain further "for your birthday, it's what we do here." his eyes fly from you, to the cake, then back to you and you can't help but giggle.
"it's dark chocolate since i know you don't like overly sweet stuff, i figured this is sort of a rite of passage for human birthdays" you laugh, but you're interrupted when your body releases a loud "oof !" when your boyfriend's large body topples over yours. you wrap your arms around his neck almost instinctively with a loud squeak.
he doesn't say anything even as you call out to him, but you think you know what he's trying to say when he nuzzles against your neck and squeezes you tight, so tight you grunt a bit and pat at his back and he plops a wet kiss on your shoulder as apology. you smile, patting his back again, because you know what he's trying to say.
"alright big guy." you start rubbing up and down his back and giggling at his annoyed grumbles. "we still have to eat the cake right ?" you nudge your shoulder a bit to encourage him and he gets off of you after a second. he looks away from you with pink cheeks and scratching at his nape. l-let's eat it then." he mumbles. you can't help the smile that grows on your face, when you remember.
"i'll go get a knife-"
"wait, wait, wait !" you lift your arms into his face and his eyes widen "i'll go get it !" you're already getting up before he can protest fully.
"it's fine, i can do it-"
"no, no ! you. sit." you wave your finger at him and he crosses his arms "m'not a dog." he mutters, but he does as you say, begrudingly.
"c'mooon, it's your birthday right ?" you tease, laughing to yourself as you head over to the kitchen again hearing him groan a 'oh, fuck off'.
you come back with a knife, two little plates, two spoons and lighter. you place them on the little table in front of you and katsuki scans your movements carefully as you grab the lighter first. you don't think he knows what they are and thinking on it now, you probably should've at least shown him how they work. because his eyes practically bulge out of their sockets when you flick it on and the small flame comes out.
"the hell are you doin' ?!!" he shouts, quickly reaching over to grab your lighter away. you manage to carefully swerve out of his way, eyes also wide as saucers.
"what are you doing ??!" you excaim back
"why are you trynna set shit on fire ??!"
"i'm not--i'm just trying to light the candles-it's normal !!" you heave. you both stare at each other chest rapidly expanding.
"oh." is all he says. you let out a loud sigh.
"yeah." you breathe. his shoulder slump and he places his elbows onto his knees, opening his hand up signalling you to give the device to him so he could analyze it.
"you flick it on like this, see ?" you teach, showcasing it to him and handing it over so he can test it out himself. he spins it around in his hands, then flicks it on. his eyes scan the flame before he squints at it.
"f'you wanted a flame, you could've just asked me to do it instead of using this wimpy shit." your mouth almost drops in shock and you chuckle, of course he'd get jealous of the lighter. you reach for the lighter and he gives it back, not before fixing it with a scowl. you calmly now, light the candles slowly while he stares.
"i just need a little light, not a flame thrower." you jest.
"m'better than that too."
"oh, i'm sure of it." you decide to humor him, it was his birthday after all, though you are pretty positive he would be better than a flame thrower and a mini lighter.
you beckon him over and he leans towards you and the cake "now you need to blow the candles out, and make a wish !" his eyebrows furrows.
"it's just tradition." you explain, batting your lashes up at him. he drops his head with a sigh and smirks to himself before leaning in, closing his eyes for a few seconds, then he leans back as his chest expands, your eyes widen again.
"katsuki, just blow on it !"
he stops, annoyed " that's what i was gonna do, if you'd let me get it out."
"i said blow, not extinguish it." you quip. he growls then leans in, closing his eyes again to reiterate his wish (despite making fun of it at first he seemed to be taking his wish pretty serious) then softly blows the candles out, huffing out a laugh when you cheer and clap for him.
"man, i wish i'd bought party poppers.." you whine "guess that's for next year." you shrug off. unbeknownst to you, katsuki feels stupid, but he also feels his heart warm at how casual you uttered those words. next year for his next birthday here with you. he nods quietly.
you cut up a slice and place it on one of the plates, you grab a spoon and scoop up a small bite. then, you jokingly raise it up to your boyfriend who's cheeks burn bright red when you go "alright, say ahh !"
he squints at you "..seriously ?" you chortle.
"it's your birth-daaay.." you sing, inching the spoon closer to his face. he rolls his eyes, then grumbles to himself. he leans in, sharp teeth peeking as he opens his mouth with a half hearted "aah.." and taking a bite. you giggle seeing him look up at the ceiling to taste the sweet treat better, his eyes postively light up and he groans in delight when the taste finally hits. you sit on the couch, and try some of the cake yourself. it's heavenly and you hum in content "s'it good ?" you snicker with your mouth full.
"s'fuckin' good." he confirms, you snort. he let's his head rolls towards you, eyes still closed "gimme more." he demands, you roll your eyes but it's his birthday so you'll comply, feeding him another spoonful of cake.
you sit around like this the whole evening, eating cake and making jokes. and of course, finishing the day by watching a movie. you pull your hands from your boyfriends head in your lap to grab your phone, he grumbles but you ignore it in favor of checking the time. it's well over midnight now and katsuki's birthday is unfortunately over. you're happy, but it has you smiling sadly.
"what's up ?" bakugou raises a brow. his hand grabs yours.
"you're officially no longer the birthday boy.." you whisper, leaning down to place a kiss against his nose. he scrunches it and puckers his lips up, grouchy face and furrowed brows on display to get you to kiss his lips instead. you roll your eyes and even if it isn't his birthday anymore, you comply.
"was good while it lasted." he shrugs off, his eyes dart across the room "i--today was..fun." he admits bashfully, you smile sweetly. he looks up at you and closes his eyes with a huff, pulling your hand into his hair.
"'cept when that old bat barged in here."
"quit talking about your mother that way." you tug at his strands and he bites at you.
a beat passes and bakugou's pulling at your shirt roughly, and you squeak when he presses his lips to yours, pillowy lips biting at your bottom one and making you gasp which gives him the opportunity to slip his tongue into your mouth, grabbing the back of your head to kiss you deeper.
when you pull away, heaving and lips shining with spit and his hair tousled from your earlier ministrations he smiles softly. it's faint but his eyes shine as hard as his cheeks when he speaks "thanks..for today an' all." he plays with your fingers to hide his nervousness to meet your soft eyes "dunno why you care s'much about this birthday stuff," you try to speak but he bites at your finger to silence "but..m'glad you do, or whatever. had a good day. better be ready to spend it with me again next year." he challenges, smirking up at you.
you smile back brightly, because you'll be ready to spend it with him next year and the year after and the years after that. you'd make sure to be with katsuki for every human birthday to come.
(little did you know, it was katsuki's wish too.)
this took forever but this part is done !! i had a lot of fun writing this one and even tho im a lot of days late (lol) heres another katsuki birthday piece ! i hope yall enjoy reading !! <3 if yall wanna keep being tagged jus lemme know but im only doing this bc some ppl wanted to be tagged for the first part !

Why Cassandra Clare and her Shadowhunter Chronicles are so important to me.
For the record. I’m autistic. 85% of my friends are on the Spectrum or some other kind of neuro-divergent. And they are all artists, creators, innovators, scholars, entrepreneurs, and HUGE FUCKING NERDS. Maybe that’s a Spectrum thing. Maybe that’s because I live in the SF Bay Area. Maybe it’s both. Maybe those things are all related. Anyways. Hopefully that gives you some context for what I’m about to write about in my rambly way that I do. And for future posts.
OH YEAH. Spoilers.
--
Something that I am really big on is reading. I love to read. I devoured novels all through middle school. I think some “friends” I went to middle and high school with are surprised at how extroverted I am in adulthood. In reality I was always an extrovert I just preferred hanging out with fictional people back then.
A series that was very important to me early on was The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. When I was 14 I was put into foster care. I’ll spare you that tragic backstory for another post that’s more about that, but for now what you need to know is nobody wants a brand new teenager. So I was in grouphomes. The first one I was at I was roommates with a girl. We’ll call her M’Kenzie.
“That’s spelled Capital M - breath mark - capital K- e - n - z - i - e,” She would say then go back to texting thirty year old men she met on craigslist. I was enveloped in some book I had with me. Probably The Wizard of Oz or Frankenstein.
My new roommate looks up from her phone. “You like to read.”
I nod. Barely looking up from the worn pages of my literary classic. She hands me a box. In it are 3 books. City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass.
I read the City of Bones over the course of the next week. It didn’t grip me, but I was intrigued. Cassie brought me into a Demon filled NYC, where dorky nerdy girls like me who would rather be reading comics could be badasses.
And still at that time it was just... something to read.
For whatever reason City of Ashes was so hard for me to get through. Looking back, it was probably due to the incestuous themes. It became my BART/bus book and I read it on my way to school, and therapy and social worker appts.
I finished City of Glass in the car ride being transferred to another group home. I don’t think I even asked. M’Kenzie if I could keep them. And then that was it. No more. It was over. It wasn’t until after City of Glass that I realized that I was so engrossed in the world.
About six months later I am at Borders (RIP) and my Dad and Stepmom are visiting me from Michigan. My dad knows my love of books and offers to get me one. I’m browsing and browsing until - What’s this? Clockwork Angel. Could it be?! Another chance to go back into this world. And so I do.
I fall in love with Tessa and Will and Jem. I rejoice as I uncover these things. I’m even more pleased when I discover the teaser that More Mortal Instruments books would be released.
I’m at my 3rd grouphome in San Francisco, CA when Clockwork Princess the final book in The Infernal Devices is released. My social worker brought me to Menlo-Atherton high school on my 17th birthday when Cassandra Clare is there for the release tour. You can actually see me in the picture the Mundie Moms posted that night.
I remember the question I asked too. “Where’s Will’s dragon tattoo?” That’s right guys. That tour. That night. That was me who asked about that: And Sarah Rees Brennan announced that it was in the “ahem butt-chular area.”
When she signed my book, she said “You know, Simon’s sister’s name is Rebecca.”
I nodded, already knowing this piece of information. I told her it was my birthday and she wished me a happy birthday and wrote it into the sign.
“I like the way you spell it.” She said.
Gosh. I meant for this post to be something else entirely but here I am just remembering my adolescence in relation to these books. I promise there is a point to this all.
Ok. Now Bekka’s 18 and living with her father in Michigan. I am the proud owner of a PowerPuff Girls shirt that my dad really wants (That one is also a conversation for a later post.) I tell him I’ll give it to him jokingly if he buys me City of Heavenly Fire on release day. And he agrees. I read it over the course of the next two days. My eyes fall out of my eye-sockets you get the picture.
A year later. I’m attending community college in Grand Rapids Michigan, I’m engaged to a shitlord that I have dubbed Sebastian so I can think of him as the rotten piece of shit he is. Anyways. A friend of mine bond over the series and talk Lady Midnight together, but unfortunately because of “Sebastian” and his drama I’m unable to finish it until I move back to California after we split up.
I purchase Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy days after getting my new apartment. I remember reading it at work and laughing out loud and having my co-workers start at me like I’m crazy.
And now, 21 years old. I had just moved to Oakland. I bought Lord of Shadows the day it came out and am working my way through it now.
And... I just...
I have been through such a journey in life that it’s so crazy that these books. These characters. This world has stuck with me.
I have the privilege of sharing it with a close friend of mine, Dani, by reading it to her aloud. It’s so... wonderful to be able to revisit the world in a new light by rereading it for myself and helping someone experience it for the first time.
I don’t know where my life will take me. Or where Cassie plans on taking the Shadowhunters. But I do know that no matter what they’ll be by my side. No matter what. They are the friends I have always had and always will have.
So thank you Cassandra Clare.
Thank you.

Klance Fic Recs, AU Settings I
Okay so I might end up making multiple parts for AU settings. This one contains mostly occupational/hobby/setting AU stuff. So unless an AU fic prominently featured a certain element, it’ll go on another list. So there are some College AUs, 2 Soulmate AUs, and maybe a few others.
SPORTS
Olympians house on fire by ilgaksu When Lance McClain is eighteen, he qualifies for the Olympics.
When he's nineteen, he meets Keith.
Correlation does not mean cause, until it totally does.
your love is bright as ever by aknightley (gymnast!Keith, swimmer!Lance) A brief interlude in the future of the Olympic AU, Christmas with Keith and Lance and their cats.
"This always looks easier in those made for television movies," Keith tells Blue, who rolls over and out of his lap, chasing her own bits of tinsel.
In It To Win It by Lucy_Claire One of two things was happening right now, either Lance was having a heart attack on of the biggest day of his life, or he had just laid eyes on his Soulmate. _______
Competitive swimmer Lance McClain feels his Timer counting down right when he's about to jump in the water and finish up his race. He's faced with two choices in this moment: Continue the race and miss meeting his Soulmate at their fateful time or abandon his life's work for someone he never met.Lance makes his choice and has to suffer the consequence of never getting back what he missed out on. Or does he?
Swimmers Ocean Eyes by spacezuko Lance himself doesn't even believe in his own abilities. He is drowning in his own pool of desire to be everything that he claims he is. Everything that he wants to be. Keith wonders if he’s broken Lance because he doesn't say a word, his eyes filled with something opaque that Keith can't quite pinpoint the meaning of. Lance’s eyes are a deep blue. Not the typical morning sky blue, but the kind of ocean blue one wants to drown in.
With legs like these by Queerswimming In which Lance finds out that there's a pool in the castle and challenges Keith to a race.
Lance did NOT think this through. Because not a single thing in this universe could’ve prepare him for the sight of Keith in nothing but a red pair of swimming trunks.
Keith has one arm bend behind his head and stretches it with the other. His back arches beautifully, presenting Lance a perfect view of his well-defined torso. At least the last thing Lance sees right before he dies are those ripped abs.
Football Mistakes were made by Lynn1998 Lance can't stand the captain of the football team…so why is he having sex with him? Part 1 of skinny band nerd takes it up the ass from the beefcake football captain series
Ice Skating/Hockey On Thin Ice (WIP) by Minadora Once upon a time, two Canadian nerds decided to start a figure skating au about their two space sons and their wonderful misfit friends. Ten pages of headcanons later we finally put electronic pen to electronic paper and created this monstrosity.
This multi-chapter fic chronicles the lives of a hockey player named Keith who gets forcibly enlisted into figure skating lessons by his brother, Shiro, to "work on his footwork". There he meets a pompous - yet talented - figure skater named Lance and gets swept away by both the sport and the skater.Enjoy the ride because it's only just started.
Kiss My Ice (WIP) by delictor Lance hasn't skated in a year since the accident that cost him the Olympics. Keith can't skate for shit but that doesn't stop him from catching Lance's attention, even when he can't so much as stand up after falling on the ice.
'When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.'
“Soon as we're off this ice you're dead.” Keith's threat is an empty one and he knows Lance can tell by the way he laughs at it. “Serious question though, do you not know who I am?” Lance questions. “Should I?” “No, I guess not.” Lance shrugs. “I'm gonna twirl you, okay?” “No, no don't—wait!” Keith cries out as he's suddenly viewing the entire arena and his legs go rigid before colliding into Lance's chest, his chest rising and falling with laughter, hands gripping Keith's upper arms gently. “Put me back on land.” “Technically, we are on land.” “We're on frozen water, get me off it.”
Quidditch (Non Hogwarts AU) The Marks We Make (WIP) by wittyy_name Lance McClain constantly dreams of the day he'll finally meet his mysterious soulmate. They don't say much, if anything at all, but they leave him with gorgeous paintings temporarily tattooing his skin. It's not exactly the situation he hoped for, but when he feels the connection between them, he can't bring himself to resent them. As much as he wishes his soulmate would just talk to him, he's resigned himself to being patient. In the meantime, he has a loving family and good friends to help him get by.
Keith Kogane dreads the day he'll finally meet his obnoxious soulmate. He's just an art student who's struggling to find his place in the world. There's so much he hasn't been able to control in his life, and the thought of having a soulmate, just another thing in his life which he also has no control over yet can't do anything about, is a little terrifying. So he ignores the words that occasionally appear on his skin. He has other things to focus on: like being a new student at a big university where his childhood friend and step-brother go.
Surfers (mostly surfer!Lance) Should I Stand Up on Fear (And Tell You How I Feel?) by Lulatic “So, it’s really a good thing that Lance got distracted before he dragged you out there with him,” Hunk chuckled. “I guess flirting became more important than your guys’ rivalry.’
Keith blushed again, looking away with a huff. “Yeah, whatever. He’ll probably be distracted long enough that I can go back to the Castle before he decides I need some surfing lessons.”
Pidge laughed, that kind of cheeky giggle that made Keith and Hunk look over at them with wide eyes. Pidge raised a single eyebrow at Keith, grinning mischievously. “Oh, but you won’t be going back to the Castle any time soon, now will you? Not when Lance is out there, soaking wet, wearing nothing but a pair of swimming trunks.”
Pride Tide by lemoninagin He’d stared up, watched the differing patches of sunlight play the most stunning array of colored patterns across Keith’s pale face as he grinned mischievously over him. Time slowed, his own breathing became laboured and caught in his throat.
“You can teach me, right?” Keith had asked in a shyer voice than usual, brushing the tangled mess of his windswept hair away from his eyes and cocking his head towards the boards.
Save his smile by Queerswimming Keith wants to protect Lance's smile and finds his answer at the beach. Starring an awkward Keith, Surfer Lance and Hunk playing a giant ice berg.
Lance caresses the wood gently. His eyes turn soft as he speaks. “My big brother taught me how to build a board.” He laughs softly. “I always messed it up though. I wasn't patient enough to do it right." He taps on the wood and looks at Keith with a sad smile that knocks the breath out of Keith lungs.
“Who would have thought that I would build a surf board in space though.”
He laughs at that but Keith can tell that Lance is faking it. He always can.
Roller Derby Like Devo by surveycorpsjean As rival jammers, they're rough, skating around the rink, giving bruises, bloody noses, broken ribs and snapped fingers-
But when the cops show up, Keith grabs his hand and yanks Lance into the storm drain.
And thats how they start dating.
Streetracing Purple Lamborghini by warschach “I need you to focus on this race. No more hate flirting with Keith as much as I enjoy it. I like winning more.”
He scoffed, “I don’t flirt.”
“Then stop saying you’re going to teach him how to ride.”
“I was talking about driving. Duh,” Lance countered with an attitude mastered purely by Valley girls and entitled customers.
“Yea, Lance it doesn’t come off like that at all. It sounds like you’re gonna fuck him.”
“I’m not.”
ARTISTS (also including Musicians and Modeling)
Photographer Pretty Boy by MilkTeaMiku (photographer!Keith) A pretty Spanish boy shoves a bouquet of flowers under his nose and tells him to stop and smell the roses, so Keith does.
Roommates by manamune (photographer!Lance, artist!Keith) (13:24) Lance: Thank you!! Love you, Keith!!!
(13:55) Keith: I’m screenshotting that for the next time you deny it.
Sight for Sore Eyes by writewild Photographer!Lance's deadline for the magazine he works on the side for is coming up really soon, and has to search last-minute photo opportunities soon. One boy catches his eye.
Riptide by songsofthespring (photographer!keith, surfer!Lance) Keith fumbles with the camera around his neck and lines up a shot. The boy coasting down a wave, one hand kissing the water. Keith zooms in as far as his lens will allow him. Droplets frame the boy’s brown skin and cling to his hair and chest. His eyes, little pinpricks of light from this distance, are nevertheless still recognizably as bright as the ocean itself. It looks like he could be dancing when he rides a wave; every part of his lanky frame seems to merge with the board and the ocean beneath him.
He’s beautiful.
Foreign Scenes by bwyn Lance has been dreaming of travelling since the first time he heard stories from his family as a child. Now, having finally the time and money to do it, he goes on a trip to Europe to see some of the most culturally rich cities on the continent. Except he keeps bumping into the same guy over and over again, in random cities, doing stupid shit, and ultimately dragging Lance into his trouble, too.
Basically an AU in which Lance and Keith become impromptu travel buddies and get into trouble.
Artist 7 Days to Fall For You by saiikavon (artist!Keith, ballerina!Lance)
Keith is an art student who mostly keeps to himself, taking note of the beauty in life but keeping his distance from it. This includes the beautiful dancer he sees across the street from his apartment...until a week-long art project pushes him to change that.
(For Klance Secret Santa 2016)
And Now You’re Mine (WIP) by Samyx914 (some artist!Keith) “No, really. I’ve been thinking about that movie since I got up and that’s the only copy they have and I want it.”
“But, I was faster.”
“But, I want to watch it.” The stranger laughs.
“Well, you could always come home with me to watch it.” He says with a wink.
“Okay.” The stranger’s eyes widen. What the fuck, Keith? No. You don’t go home with strangers… Anymore.
In which Keith wants to watch a movie, so he goes to find it at Walmart. When there's only one copy left and someone else picks it up first, his only option is to go home with a stranger. Keith didn't count on this stranger being so easy to fall for.
Visions by becca2793 "It’s funny, because as a tattoo artist he makes art that lasts pretty much forever – as far as the person who has it is concerned – but a street artist…their art lasts maybe a couple of days."
Keith comes in for a tattoo; Lance immediately falls in love. With his art. His love for Keith comes later.
Take the Easel Way Out by svensationalist Oh no, he’s hot, Lance thinks while he’s dying.
(Pidge elbows Lance sharply a little while later. “You’re not dying, dumbass,” they whisper. “Pay attention, the pose started.”)
***
Written for klanceweek day 1, “Red/Blue”. Art class AU where Lance can’t focus because one of the new life drawing models is too attractive.
Cute as Fcuk by anonymouschupacabra Even though he had never seen the hot guy before in the year that he'd been going to college, it was like the dam had broken, because Lance saw him everywhere. From the sculpture rooms, to the library, to the cafeteria, the guy was everywhere Lance was, and it only made it that much harder to ignore the hot buzzing he felt inside every time he saw him.
Dancers 7 Days to Fall For You by saiikavon (ballerina!Lance) see above ^
i bet you look good on the dance floor by xShieru "So like in 'Step Up'?" Allura shrugs. "Now that you put it like that - yes. I guess it's just like in 'Step Up'." The smile that she sends Shiro's way - followed by a shy wave, eugh - is sickening to say the least, and Lance still doesn't believe in dance camps
.-
Lance McClain's dancing career begins and ends with Keith.
Keith just wants to find out what Lance's deal is.
you raise me up by rhapsodyinpink “What, you don’t think I look like Patrick Swayze?”
Keith snickers. “Absolutely not. You are Jennifer Grey in this situation.”
“That’s a fair point. Nobody puts me in a corner,” replies Lance, nodding seriously, before his expression turns mischievous.
“So then...are you saying you want to call me Baby?”
Keith flushes red, but stands his ground as he leans in closer. “Are you saying you want me to?”
Shut Up and Dance With Me (WIP) by wittyy_name Lance and his friends have been regulars at the Altea Dance Studio for years. Not just for classes, but to hang out, practice, and spend time with good people who love dancing. Every year, they audition to be one of the few representing Altea at the regional dance competition. Lance always auditions solo, but this year he misses out on auditions and blows his chance to participate. And so does his self-proclaimed rival, Keith.
Luckily, Shiro comes up with a brilliant plan: convince Lance and Keith to audition as a duo.
With a little convincing, and a lot of effort, these two might just be able to pull it off and go to regionals... or they might crash and burn.
Musicians That Would Be Alright by icedsonder And call it spur of the moment, his exacerbated pining over past few months, or even his own alcohol impaired judgment, but Keith let his inhibitions take a backseat as he took a step forward and pressed his forehead against Lance’s to sing his next lines.
"I know I'll fall in love with you, baby"
Musically Insane by myparadisepalace It had only taken Lance three days after becoming the blue paladin to realize there were no instruments in the castle. And even if there were, Lance figured they’d be too obscure and strange for him to be able to play.
PROFESSIONS (i.e. cops, doctors, EMTs, waiters)
Soldiers/Assassins/Spies Counting in Code by DLanaDHZ There was no one better in the field. The Voltron Force was efficient and deadly, and they took no new recruits. They were hand-picked, and though they didn't always get along, they were family. Under the stress of a mission, the team counted each other as a way to calm down and focus. But Keith couldn't count, because counting meant he knew where everyone was, and right now all he had was a pair of bloody dog tags in place of his partner.
blink if you want me by xShieru He wakes up to Pidge’s face hovering above him. “You gotta stop running into him like this.” “Dude, he fucking shot me.” “I know. We saw.”
-
A hitmen AU wherein two thirsty assholes fall for each other and then jeopardize their respective missions because of it.
Retail/Food (waiters/cashiers/clerks) Melt With You by dumpsterdiva If you ask Keith what summer means to him, he’ll say shitty weather, a bag of quarters, sticky blue raspberry kisses, and not-quite-midnight sandwiches.
Summer job AU at the pier feat. Keith as a shaved ice slave and Lance as an aquarium camp counselor.
You Dropped a Bomb by quartetship Lance loved his job.
OR: The Klance LUSH au
Tollbooth Operator Drive Me Crazy by battleshidge Keith stared blankly at the tollbooth operator for a moment before trying to stifle a groan. Somehow, he always managed to get the booth with the flirtatious attendant, a lanky brown-haired man with clear blue eyes and a confident grin. It didn’t matter that he changed what lane he went through—at least three times a week on his way home from work, Keith was forced to suffer through the horrendous flirts that this man tossed his way.
Taxi Driver Finish What You Started by battleshidge “You were right,” Keith breathed, looking up at Lance with a fire in his eyes. “I did start this,” he lifted his chin, pressing a soft kiss to Lance’s jaw. And another. And another. Lance thought it was torture—sweet, sweet torture. And then that challenge sparked in Keith’s eyes again as he asked, tone low and resonant, “Are you going to finish it?”
Pizza Delivery You Stole a Pizza My Heart by KaSaPe Keith just wanted a pizza. The cute delivery boy with the weird grin and stupid flirting (?) had other plans.
Or: Keith just doesn't get Lance's flirting. At all.
Lifeguards six foot dive (WIP) by shizuoh "I'm bisexual," Lance says.
Keith furrows his eyebrows. "Good... for you?"

Sterek A-Z Challenge: one word prompts
Week 8: H - Home
Forty-two hours stretched over four days. That’s how long Derek had been trapped in a tiny car with Stiles, and it was enough for Derek to admit that he should have ignored Stiles’ protests and sprung for tickets for both of them to fly because Stiles could not sit still. He fidgeted constantly.
Stiles played with the radio, the electronic locks, the windows, the seat controls, the contents of the glove box, the map, the sunroof, and even Derek himself. No amount of growling or fangs could stop him. It’s like Stiles wasn’t afraid of him anymore.
Derek had almost strangled Stiles when he’d demand they stop for “pee break” only two hours after leaving Beacon Hills. Four days of diner food, crumbs on the seats, and scenic rest stops. There had only been one point that had been non-negotiable: hotels. High-end, or nothing, and Derek happily footed the bill to sleep on clean sheets.
There was not enough money in the world for Derek to sleep in a low-end motel filled with the scent of other people's deeds, deaths, and other indiscretions just because Stiles could afford the rate. No better way to spoil an already crappy day by laying down on a pillow that smelled like semen.
But that was in the past. They’d just crossed the Hudson and were heading towards Derek’s loft on the edge of the Upper West Side near Columbia.
After receiving Stiles’ call at the beginning of May, Derek had finally set foot inside the loft for the first time in five years. It had been Laura’s. When she died, her assets had been transferred into Derek’s name as the last known living relative. Peter had supposedly been in a coma at the time.
The call had been tentative. So timid and hesitant. At first, Derek hadn’t been sure it was really Stiles, but someone impersonating him, trying to lure him in, which had only been more worrying. He may have left Beacon Hills, but Derek still cared about his pack. Stiles in particular. The fragile pack human whose emotional damage rivalled Derek’s own.
Derek still wasn’t sure how it happened. One minute Stiles was asking him about New York and for advice on the city and finding a place to live near Columbia. The next thing Derek knew, he was offering Stiles the loft and a new roommate.
Stiles’ face was pressed to the window to stare up at the skyscrapers. Occasionally he wiped the glass with his sleeve when his breath fogged it over. They were stuck in traffic, but Stiles was enthralled.
The only time Derek drove in the city was when he was coming or going. For the full moon, he would probably drive up to their old cabin upstate where he could shift and run. He’d been living there until Stiles had contacted him.
“This is so cool! I’ve never been to New York before,” Stiles said. He wiped down the window with his sleeve again and squished his nose back against the glass. “I mean, I went to DC during spring break, but you know, so not the same thing.”
Derek flicked on his blinker to change lanes and the taxi behind him honked. “I know. You didn’t stop texting me.”
“Hey! You love my texts.” Stiles whipped around and jabbed a finger in Derek’s direction, and Derek raised his eyebrows at him. “Don’t lie.”
Derek rolled his eyes, and Stiles punched him in the shoulder.
“Jerk. Okay, so love may be a bit strong, but you liked it. Admit it, sourwolf” Stiles said, leaning across the armrest to nudge Derek in the side and wiggled his eyebrows at him. “You loved hearing from me.”
“Stiles, you once chronicled your first encounter with a bidet via text.” It had been amusing, not that Derek would tell Stiles that. It would only encourage him.
“It was an experience!” Stiles nearly smacked Derek with the back of his hand as he flailed about.
“One that I didn’t need to share,” Derek muttered. Shoulder checking, he wedged the nose of the Camaro into the other lane. He hated driving in the city.
“Well, fine,” Stiles huffed. He slouched in his seat and crossed his arms over his chest. “Next time I do something epic and exciting, I won’t tell you.”
Derek clenched his jaw to keep from grinning because Stiles pouting was surprisingly adorable. “Good.”
“You suck,” Stiles muttered.
“It’s more of a chewing motion,” Derek shot back before he could stop himself. It had been an old comeback with Laura. The city was already starting to get to him, and they hadn’t even stepped out of the car yet.
Stiles gaped at him. “Did- did you just make a joke?”
Derek shrugged. “It’s been known to happen.”
“Oh my god,” Stiles exclaimed, fumbling for his phone. “I need to text Scott! Sourwolf’s got jokes.”
Derek lunged for the phone, snatching it right out of Stiles’ hand before the brat could even unlock the screen. Stiles made a strange strangled noise in shock before he planted a hand on Derek’s thigh and tried to climb over the armrest, while still wearing his seatbelt, to steal the phone back.
The battle was a mess of flailing limbs and sharp elbows at a stoplight. Stiles clipped Derek in the jaw which caused Derek to bit his tongue and split his lip. By the time the blood dripped off his chin, the superficial wounds were already healed.
Derek shoved Stiles’ face away from him. His skin was warm and his breath hot. The hand on Derek’s thigh slipped, and Stiles’ head hit the steering wheel. Stiles shrieked, and his head slammed into the roof when he jumped at the blast of the horn.
The light had already changed at the intersection. Derek shoved the phone under his butt and sat on it.
“Oh, come on,” Stiles said. He flopped back into his seat. “You know me better than that.”
Just as Derek shifted the car into gear, Stiles wedged his hand under Derek’s butt. It was weird. Fingers wiggled.
When they stopped at the next light, Derek grabbed Stiles’ wrist and growled at him. His eyes flashed blue and his fangs descended.
Stiles froze, eyes wide.
Derek dropped Stiles hand and backed off. “Sorry.”
“No.” Stiles voice cracked, a little hoarse. He cleared his throat. “No, it’s fine. I just... I missed this.” He shrugged.
Derek turned down a quieter side street and glanced back at Stiles. “Yeah?”
Stiles nodded. “Yeah.
Derek ducked his head and smiled. He’d missed this too. Whatever this was. He’d never made sense out of the complicated relationship he had with Stiles. They were packmates? Comrades? Friends?
The truth was, Derek trusted Stiles. That was more than could be said for most people, even the rest of the pack. Time and time again, Stiles had proved himself. Risking his own life for Derek’s.
The car was silent until Derek pulled up to the curb.
“I’m keeping the phone,” Derek said, and climbed out of the car, taking Stiles phone with him.
Stiles kicked open the passenger door, making Derek wince at the harsh treatment of his baby. “Like hell you are,” Stiles shouted.
Slipping the phone into his back pocket, Derek stepped up onto the curb beside Stiles and looked up at the old building. “We’re here.”
The building was quaint. Old brick work, wide windows, and a cobble stone walk to the stone stairs. Laura had been all about aesthetic. Derek had been sixteen at the time. Cute hadn’t been a priority unless it was going to suck his dick.
Stiles stared up at the ten story building, head tilted back and mouth slack. “Woah.”
Derek tore his attention away from the soft curve of Stiles’ exposed throat and busied himself with retrieving Stiles’ meager possessions from the trunk. He hadn’t brought much. A single worn duffel bag stuffed with clothes and his laptop.
“Woah?” Derek repeated.
“Yeah. Woah,” Stiles said. He shrugged helplessly and shoved his hands in the pockets of his jeans. “I mean, where’s the doom and gloom. The creep factor?”
Derek grunted and slammed the trunk closed. Shouldering the duffel bag, Derek thrust the laptop into Stiles’ chest and jogged up the front steps.
“Hurry up.”
Stiles was still standing on the sidewalk clutching his laptop to his chest and blinking up at the building. “What? Oh!”
The lobby was empty, but it brought back memories, like the time Derek and Laura had lost patience with the ancient elevator and opted for the stairs with twelve boxes of pizza at three in the morning. By the time they reached their floor, they’d already eaten two whole pizzas a piece.
Derek ran his fingers over the claw marks in the wood in the elevator from the time he lost control shortly after the fire. He closed his eyes and drew a shaky breath. They’d spent the night curled up together on the couch watching horrible B-movies under a single blanket that smelled like home.
A gentle hand on his arm brought Derek back to the present. Stiles watched him with a quiet expression of unadulterated understanding and acceptance. Not trace of pity. Stiles knew loss.
Tugging Stiles by the arm, Derek pulled him into a one-armed hug, burying his nose in Stiles’ neck and inhaling. Returning was harder than he thought it would be. He was thankful Stiles was here with him.
Timidly, Stiles curled an arm around Derek’s waist and propped his chin on Derek’s shoulder. It was new and different, but good. Like unlocking a new level in their turbulent friendship.
Most interaction in the past had involved slamming Stiles into various hard surfaces and heavy amounts of sarcasm. Gentle had never been in their repertoire, at least not since losing Boyd. Derek could still recall the warmth of Stiles’ hesitant hand on his shoulder.
The hinges of the painted red door of apartment 10A creaked and groaned as Derek eased it open. The gust of stale air made his nose twitch. Stepping back, Derek gestured for Stiles to enter first.
Stiles took a deep breath and marched into the apartment. He stopped dead center and turned slowly on the spot to survey the interior. The apartment was bare with a thin coat of dust. Derek followed at a more sedate pace, casually glancing around the large open room.
“Nice to see your decorating skills are up to their usual standards,” Stiles teased. “No hole in the wall. Classy.”
Derek dropped Stiles’ duffel bag at his feet. “Shut up, Stiles.”
Grinning, Stiles set his laptop down on his bag and jogged up the stairs to the single loft bedroom, disappearing from sight to explore the room they’d probably fight over later.
Wrinkling his nose at the tickle of dust in the air, Derek opened one of the large windows that overlooked the street below. He inhaled the burst of fresh air and sighed.
“Hey, sourwolf,” Stiles called.
A few seconds later, Stiles’ head poked over the rail, and Derek raised an eyebrow at him as if to ask ‘what? and Stiles grinned down at him.
“Welcome home.”

♡ chronicle #3 : going home ♡
fem reader pronouns mentioned in this one !
wc : 7210
bakugou has been acting different after your conversation at work.
it's not like he's gotten any less annoying, far from it. but he's been a bit more...bearable lately.
sure, he still steals your food and nips at you when you pull it away from him. but he's started 'begrudingly" sharing his portion with you, to keep it fair. whether it be an energy bar from your pantry or the dinner he insisted he'd make for himself but ended up conveniently making enough for the two of you.
he's also way more touchy, almost on the brink of clingy. he follows you around your apartment whenever you leave the living room like an angry puppy with rabies, but then denies he is. "you were just headed the same way i was." was his favorite excuse.
you had caught on quickly when he simply stood by the door and watched you fold laundry, then growling about how you took to long before taking half of your clothes and neatly folding them like his life depended on it. perhaps he was simply a clinger. you don't mind much, you get your laundry done faster with him here.
he's started sitting closer to you on the couch. slowly, subtly at first, but now he doesn't feel the need to be subtle anymore it seems. he can't be when you're practically sitting shoulder to shoulder. you don't mind much, he's warm.
you've slowly started petting his head more and more often. you don't really remember why you did before, but he didn't seem to mind it the first time, so you figured you were in the clear to do it again. he jumped after you'd first done it again while you were watching the notebook, but he didn't say anything. you didn't either so as not to get your head chewed off. you saw in the corner of your eye how he leaned his head a little more towards you, and how he turned red from the tips of his ears all the way down to his neck.
since you'd come to find out he liked getting praised, you'd start implementing the act of affection here and there and now he expects you to do it every time. it was hard to understand what he wanted at first since apparently him being a powerful and mighty dragon made him unable to use his words correctly. he'd just stare at you, fiery red eyes locked onto your face and a small barely there pout forming on his face. you'd learned to do it every time since then, otherwise he'd get cranky. you don't mind much, his hair feels really nice.
he still hasn't called you by your fucking name though, but you're desensitized by now.
it's been about an hour since you'd gotten back from work. you're watching a movie you chose, which ended up being lady and the tramp. bakugou complained at first before quickly getting absorbed into the movie. you find it frankly hilarious that the big, serious and scary dragon man enjoys watching disney movies but you digress, it was a good movie.
you can hear the microwave's low hum and you're already salivating at the smell from the leftover dinner bakugou had made yesterday. you're a little, just a smidge jealous of his cooking skills, sure. but you will not miss the opportunity to eat his food up, you've learned to suck up your pride and live with his stupidly handsome cocky smirk as you practically devour his food.
you've gotten to the famous spaghetthi scene and you're curious to see how the dragon man reacts to it. you feel smugness pooling in your chest when you see him trying to hold back a cheesy smile. you really can't blame him, there's a smile forming on your face unconsciously, this scene is really fucking cute.
"i love this scene, it's so cute" you sigh dreamingly "if only human relationships were that easy" you lament, resting your head in the palm of your hand.
bakugou, who's sitting right next to you on the couch, scoffs to himself "you humans and your stupid mating rituals. i don't know why you make things so difficult for yourselves."
"you can't just assume all humans are like what you see in drama's. most humans aren't like that" you deadpan. he pokes at your ribs and chuckles when you jolt and glare at him, just as annoying alright.
"of course i know that, shitty human" he says, shuffling around on the couch to get more comfortable, his arm brushes against yours when he throws it back around the couch for a moment and you hate how easily it makes you shiver. " but those drama's are somewhat cemented in reality, aren't they ? so it's stupid."
you roll your eyes, but you can't really disagree. humans did seem to make things complicated for themselves.
but suddenly, you're curious.
"well, how do dragons.." you fumble around with your hands looking for the right word "..date, then ?" you ask. bakugou rolls his eyes at you "we don't date." he copies in a pitchy voice, you tug at his horn and he growls, snapping at you.
"what do you do then ?" you groan as you dodge him, he knocks his head against yours and headbutts you. he's such a sore loser.
"we mate." he huffs "mate ?" you ask curiously and he nods, looking towards the tv, grunting in acknowledgement. "s'like—what you humans call marriage" he mumbles, his voice and eye contact trailing off.
"oh, okay.." you hum, nodding "so, how do you break up ?"
"we don't. there's no need."
you tilt your head at him, silently asking for more info. he sighs like he's irritated but really it's because you're staring up at him so curiously. you're eyes are big and bright and so annoyingly pretty. and your scent's way too fucking strong, it makes him want to hold you and keep you close to him, away from dragons and humans and everything else.
" everyone has a soulmate." he starts, absentmindedly prodding at the material of your couch "wether you find them at birth or at the end of your lifespan, you have one."
"you're soulmates the one that was made for you. there's an old legend you and your soulmate are stars seperated by the gods and you're looking for each other reflexively—or something" he adds, seemingly uninterested, but he can feel his skin heating up after every word "they understand you on a level no one else can, and whenever you're with them.." he cuts himself off and suddenly looks down at you. you blink up at him, surprised, but you don't move an inch. it feels like you've gotten closer somehow. something in the air has changed.
"it" he gulps "it feels right."
katsuki has understood why he feels the way he does around you for a while now. he thinks he's always had somewhat of a hunch when he'd first blasted into your apartment and hadn't killed you the moment you'd raised your voice at him. but he knew for sure when you'd had your..moment at your office.
katsuki's convinced himself he doesn't have time for soulmates, he doesn't need one. no matter how hard his old hag had tried to force encourage him to find his. he simply couldn't find it in himself to care.
and yet, now that he's met you, it's so, so different. he wants you. he wants you more then he's ever wanted anything before. he needs you more than all the gold and every treasure he could lay his eyes on. he can't hand you over to anyone else now that he's met you and he wants to be bothered, especially because you're human. something he's been taught to look down on ever since he was a cub. and yet here he is, clinging to you like a puppy. cooking for you, helping you with your stupid human chores and groceries and he listens to you when you ask him something, although begrudgingly.
and katsuki wants to hate it, he wants to hate the way you make him feel, wants to hate how mushy and soft you make him, he wants to hate you. but he can't. can't hate the way you make him feel and he can't hate you because when he's with you he feels so good. he wants more, more of this feeling, more of you.
dragons are greedy creatures after all.
you're lips suddenly feel very dry as he looks at you and you look at him. his piercing gaze makes you forget you were supposed to respond to what he said.
"o-oh, that's really..romantic" you breathe out. he huffs and he's so much closer now because you feel the air hit your face when he does "s'corny if you ask me" he says evenly, gaze focused on you.
"i did ask you" you quip, but there's no smirk on your face when you do, your heart starts beating a little faster "you seem to know a lot for someone who thinks it's corny" you try to lighten to mood, booping his nose and you watch his face scrunch up, huffing out a laugh when he bops his forehead to yours somewhat harshly again, but not enough to hurt.
" my folks told me about it. and it's a common tale back where i'm from, everyone knows about it."
and that clears your head a little bit. his parents. the place where he comes from.
you'd been too scared to ask him anything after things turned awkward a few weeks ago. it wasn't that bad, but bad enough to scare you off from asking again. you suck in a breath, sucking up your confidence with it.
"where—" you start "where are you from anyway, bakugou?" your voice is soft, meek as you ask. it's so low you could barely hear yourself but you did, and so did he. his eyes narrow the slightest bit and you have to steel your nerves to stop from flinching. he leans his head away, just slightly, like he can't force himself to go any further "why'd you wanna know ?" he asks, and unreadable expression on his face.
you shrug "i wanna know more about you." you reply. he squints at you somewhere, then closes his eyes and sighs.
"my people are from a place called yuuei. it's a great kingdom" he huffs, clearly proud.
you nod "then..why'd you leave ?" you probably should've been more careful with your wording, but you found you don't find bakugou as menacing as you used to when he first arrived. you don't know if that's a good thing or not.
his eyebrows furrow as he looks down at the couch, you don't want to upset him and you're about to tell me he doesn't have to divulge any personal information when he speaks again.
"i'm...pretty important over there.” he mumbled "it's—it doesn't matter anymore. i'll probably be replaced."
"what ? what does that mean ?" all he does is furrow his eyebrows more, clenching his fists. as if it were a reflex, you reach up and run your fingers through his soft blonde hair. his closes his eyes the moment your hand makes contact with his head, you hear a happy little chuff come from him as you scratch a specific spot he rlly likes right below his nape.
"in my kingdom, you have to do this sort of..duel, it's for power an' stuff.." he replies after a bit , his eyes still closed but the pinch in his brows returns the more he speaks "i was supposed to win. i was gonna win, but i—" a heavy scowl is present on his face and you could tell it was something hard to talk about for him. you're so focused you don't notice your movements have slowed down, but bakugou has. he nudges his head against your hand and grunts. you offer him a little mumbled out "sorry" and continue to abide to his wordless demand. it's endearing as much as it's bratty, but you don't mind much.
"that fuckin' bastard played dirty..and i lost. th't's how i got here" he groused. your eyes widen in shock, completely stopping your movements in his hair despite the groans of complaint you hear from him. "how far away is yuuei ?!"
"far" he chuckles humorlessly "very far. but i've sparred with him before, he couldn't have gotten so strong so fast. must've gotten somethin' from a witch or whatever.”
"you got blasted all the way here ?!" you squeaked, cringing at the pain he must've felt. with the state he'd appeared at..your wall, it was honestly amazing he had healed so much that fast. dragons really are something else, you thought.
he scoffs, shoving his head against your hand as if to punish you for rubbing salt in his still very open wound. "s'not that big of a deal" he stops himself for a second "i'm gettin' better aren't i, doc ?" he jests. you roll your eyes, a small smile appearing onto your face. he had been healing pretty well from what you'd seen.
"i can give you that" you sigh. bakugou gives you a once over than raises and eyebrow "well, did i satisfy your curiosity, human ?" he goads sarcastically, you fight the urge to roll your eyes again because you feel they'll get stuck to the back of your head with how hard you'd be rolling them. instead you offer him a tiny giggle, you miss how his tail raises upwards the slightest bit.
you hum pensively, and he rolls his eyes at you this time, you laugh. "yeah, i think i'm satisfied for now" you smirk, returning to your activities of messing around with his wheat colored strands of hair, making it messier and spikier than it already was.
"for now ?" he asks amusedly. but there's a subtle hint of genuine vulnerablity in his eyes that you can somehow see so clearly, you're still a little shocked about how easy this literal other wordly, mythical being was to read. or maybe bakugou was just very obvious. or maybe it's because you feel like you've known him you're entire life when you look him in the eyes for too long.
"mhm" you hum, smiling softly at him, your hand trails lower to the hairs at the nape of his neck, you get goosebumps when you hear his low growl in response to your touch "for now" you whisper. a beat passes.
suddenly, you're pressed down on the couch and bakugou's on top of you.
it happened before you could even process it. before you could even blink he was staring down at you, hands on either sides of your head and so close that you could feel his breath every time he inhaled and exhaled. there's a low rumble sound that's coming from him, you don't know from where. you can barely hear anything over the sound of your heart beating fast against your ribs.
he's simply staring, and staring and a beat passes. then he huffs, pouting to himself.
"you piss me the hell off, you know." he mutters
"wh-wha?! bakugou—" you're not even sure you could've said anything more coherent than this if you tried. your brain's scrambled, your cheeks feel hot and you cannot hear anything but him and your beating heart.
he cuts you off "katsuki." he growls. "it's katsuki. say it." he demands, sounding almost desperate.
"..katsuki" you mumble shyly, testing how the new name he'd given you sounds. it's pretty, you like saying it, you decide. he inhales harshly when he registers his name falling from your pretty lips.
"you—" he speaks " you have no fuckin' idea what you do to me, do you." he asks but he doesn't give you a chance to answer as he continues "'f course ya don't." he smirks, leaning in more so he could bump his nose against yours. your lips part to swipe your tongue over them and you feel your fingers twitch when his eyes flit over to look at the movement for way longer than necesarry before he keeps speaking.
"you, you're probably...nah, definitely the most infuriating human i've ever met." you huff, forgetting the position you're in for a moment before pouting up at him " you're not the most amicable dragon i've met either." you huff petulantly. he chuckles, adjusting a little to lean back just barely and give you that infuriating smirk. "no trust me, i am. any other dragon wouldn't have let ya mouth off like that at them for more than a second"
"so what, i should be thanking you or something ?" you snarked hotly, you go to cross your arms reflexively, but he stops you halfway. holding your arms above your head with one hand. he leans in again and you gasp slightly. his hold on you tightens ever so slightly when you do.
"yeah, you should be actually. coulda blown yer fuckin' head off if i wanted to" he snickers "but that's the thing." he says somewhat seriously "i didn't"
"thanks." you deadpan. he tuts at you, rolling his eyes again "shut up, i wasn't finished. when you mouthed off to me when i first arrived here. you had every fuckin' right to." he admits begrudgingly, looking away from you. your eyes widen in surprise but you stay silent
bakugou sighs above you " as much as i hate to admit it, you saved my life...or whatever. and the first thing i did was threaten you. i haven't met that many humans, but most of 'em were weaklings. wether they talked a big game or not, they should be prepared for what happens when you mess with me and what's mine."
"but you weren't after my treasure, or my scales, or my life. you were after payment for your fuckin' wall" he chortles " i thought that was what caught me off guard about you, so i figured i could at least fix your wall up."
he stops and his smirks melt away when he makes eye contact with you again. "but then ya offered me to stay. and i said yes. and i didn't fuckin' know why i did, but it just felt right to." he admits "i went along with your stupid human reasons that i could honestly give less of a shit about, without even fucking knowing why." he spills, inhaling as he finishes "but now," he swallows, leaning down so his lips make contact with your neck, you gasp in surprise "now i do." he rumbles lowly.
you can barely speak, can barely think straight and yet it's like your body's taking full control "wh-why?" you hear yourself ask. he looks up at you from where he's hidden in your neck and leans up until your lips are a breath away from each other. it startles you, but you don't move.
he looks at your lips then back up at you. red eyes peering at you, asking for permission. you exhale and feel yourself nod just the slightest bit, but just enough for him to get your approval. you want this, you need this. you feel like you'll lose it if you he doesn't—
the sound of the timer makes you both jump.
"oh—shit !" you squeak, surprised at the sudden noise, you look at the tv, and back at him. his face is fully red and he refuses to look at you anymore. it makes your chest hurts a little bit. just as fast as he'd pushed you down onto the couch he's already off you, quickly mumbling "i'll go check it." before dissapearing into the kitchen, you can just barely catch the sound of his retreating footsteps over the sound of your beating heart.
what. just. happened ?
you don't know how you fell asleep last night but you did somehow, because the next morning you're off from work, it's ten am, and katsuki is gone. he'd left a note in suprisingly neat handwriting saying he had gone out to get groceries for dinner tonight. it was your turn to make dinner today, but you appreciate it nonetheless, despite your heavy, heavy heart.
you hear a knock at your door and you assume it's him, even though you find it odd of him to knock, since you had offered him a spare key. the knocking is insistent and loud. you grumpily stalk up to your door, swinging it open. expecting to be met with an extremely pushy telemarketer but instead you're met with an extremely tall, red haired man.
he had to be a little bit taller than katsuki, from what you can see. his hair spikes up and blends together so well it takes you a moment to notice those front pieces aren't hair, but horns. you look behind him for good measure and notice a long, red tail swaying from side to side like a cat's. he smiles wide, opening his mouth to speak and you're suddenly face first with an insanely sharp set off teeth. those are way sharper than katsuki's, by a long shot.
he's a dragon.
"hey !" he chirps happily. he doesn't seem like that big of a threat, you dare even say friendly. friendlier than your dragon friend that's for sure.
"hi.." you say wearily, tightly clutching onto your door preparing to slam it in his face should he give you a reason to. he seems to realise you're suspicious of him, as he backs up a little bit, raising his hands up in surrender.
"don't worry, i mean you no harm ! honest !" he reassures, looking you up and down. he seems to find something funny because he snorts but tries to hold it in. you look down and realise you're wearing your most ridiculous set of sanrio pyjamas, with cinnamoroll slippers to match.
great. very awesome. just perfect.
you look away from his and he seems to sense you starting to become flustered, (his senses sure are sharp, you'll give him that) lighthearteldly chuckling "i like your...footwear" he jests pointing with his chin towards your feet "very cute."
"did you need anything ?" you mutter, refusing to look at him because you feel like you'd explode from embarrassment. he jumps a little, seeming to remember what he came for and nods " yeah, actually ! i don't know if you'll believe me, but i'm a dragon."
"i can tell." you respond
"ya don't seem to be all the shocked.." he chuckles, looking a little dissapointed. it's kind of cute and you crack a small smile
"let's just say you're not the first dragon i've met." he nods, humming to himself and you can't tell if he actually heard you, let alone understood you.
"well, that makes things a little easier." he says " i'm actually looking for someone, a friend of mine. he's been missing for a little while and i'm looking for him." he explained
you raise and eyebrow in question "and what makes you think he'd be here?" you asked suspicously
"my buddy's real strong, so i could sense his mana output was somewhere around here ! i was gonna go from door to door, but it felt the strongest over here, so i decided to check your residence first !" he beams.
oh wow.
you don't even want to imagine what would've happened if someone had seem him like..that outside of their door. you can just thank the heavens above he came to your door first. nevertheless, he seems harmless. and he's pretty endearing, you're heart can't help but squeeze for him a little bit.
"oh, well—"
"what the fuck are you doing here ?!"
you and your new dragon friend both jump at the booming voice belonging to none other than your blonde dragon roommate, having just returned from doing the groceries. he doesn't look pleased, unlike his friend, who's breaks out into a grin seeing him.
"bakugou, man !" he rushes over to his friend, his tail happily following along. he clasps his hand behind his friends back, said friend doesn't budge and opts to glare from the corner of his eye.
"what the fuck are you doing here, shitty hair ?!" katsuki growls again, hands tightening around the grocery bags. you wince at the harsh nickname but his friend doesn't even flinch, probably already used to your dragon friends potty mouth.
shitty hair (?) simply laughs "what type of question is that ? i came here to get you !" his friend throws an arm around his shoulder and katsuki's jaw tightens.
you can't wipe the look of shock on your face fast enough because katsuki notices it. his eyebrows furrow as he's sure you'd heard what his mysterious companion had said, not that you could miss his frankly loud voice.
a beat passes and katsuki just shakes his head, grumbling at his friends words." i didn't ask you to come for me."
his hold loosens just slightly on the grocery bags in his hands and he sighs, shaking his friends shoulder off and walking past you both into your apartment, you both follow after him.
"c'mon man ! everyone's been worried about you !" kirishima pleads, accidently bumping past you to reach his friend. bakugou insists on ignoring him, stuffing the groceries in the fridge and the pantry "you've been gone for way longer than you usually are when you get mopey, so i just wanted to check up on—"
bakugou throws his friend a pointed glare, the heat of his stare causes his friend to flinch and his tail to drop. bakugou clenches his fists once, then twice and goes back to putting tonight's ingredients away "get lost. i don't need you to check up on me." he all but growls "i'm obviously fine, so tell the others to quit worryin.'"
"as if ! what am i supposed to tell them ? that you're suddenly working for humans ?" his friend seems to remember your existence and turns to you, waving his hands around " a— a nice human, of course !"
as confused as you are, you offer him a small smile "no offense taken." he smiles at you, sharp teeth on display, you miss the way bakugou slams the fridge door a little more harshly than usual. "i'm not workin for them ! as if i'd ever stoop that low, don't fuckin' insult me !"
"w-well what am i supposed to get from...this ?!" his friend gestures towards the now empty grocery bags in katsuki's hands. bakugou rolls his eyes and opens his mouth to respond when you cut in.
"uhm, excuse me ?"
this might be the stupidest decision you've ever made, standing in between two huge men who also happen to be dragons was definetly not something you expected to happen in your lifetime.
"i can tell you have..issues" you trail off "but i would like to get some things straight first, alright ?" you look to both men for answers. your unexpected guest nods obediently while your grouchy friend simply grunts in response, looking away from you. you sigh.
"alright first," you turn to the red haired dragon man " who are you ?" he jumps, rubbing at his nape, suddenly bashful "oh, right ! sorry, how rude of me !" he apologizes to you so easily. he's been suprisingly easy to deal with and you're starting to doubt what bakugou said about other dragons being meaner than him.
"the name's kirishima ! kirishima eijirou ! i'm sorry i didn't introduce myself sooner" you hear bakugou scoff behind you but you choose to ignore it, nodding at kirishima's words. "..alright kirishima, what do you want from bakugou here ?" you ask, nodding your chin behind your back towards your spiky haired roommate.
kirishima nods " bakugou suddenly went missing after an incident happened at our ten-year-tournament. i didn't bother looking for him at first, cuz he likes to be alone when he's brooding." he chuckles nervously "but he didn't show up after a few days and suddenly we realized he had dissapeared. i couldn't just give up on my bro, so i went looking for him." he explains.
"well ya found me, whoop-dee-fuckin'-doo." katsuki deadpans " so now you can fuck off—"
you fix bakugou with a sharp glare, and he clamps his mouth shut in suprise, before grumbling to himself, deciding to kick his shoes off. you sigh, focusing back on kirishima who looks shocked for a reason you don't know, then fixes his gaze on you again and straightens up, you look at him funny but you don't bother asking him about his behavior.
"ten-year- tournament ?"
"yeah !" kirishima bellows like you're a sergeant "it happens every decade between multiple different factions within our kingdom to avoid resorting to an all out war" he explains " we organize a tournament with representatives from every faction to take part in a sort of all out combat tournament !"
" the winning faction is granted a significant advantage and influence. the tournament serves as a means to determine a balance of power and settle disputes peacefully." katsuki adds on from behind you, with kirishima nodding along excitedly.
your jaw practically drops to the floor as you process the information. bakugou looks damn near constipated when you look back at him in shock. he squirms and shuffles around refusing to meet your eye.
bakugou scoffs for the umpteenth time today, shoving his hands in the pockets of the pants he chose out a few weeks ago when you'd went to the mall "...s'not that big of a deal.." he mutters, basically to himself but unfortunately for him both you and kirishima hear him.
"what ?!" you both exclaim, bakugou squints harder, his expression souring. you turn to kirishima and he doesn't need to be asked anything to know you want to know more. he continues nervously, despite having bakugou's glare concentrated on him as if telling him to be quiet.
"basically, bakubro over here fougth against someone from another faction, but it didn't end well."
"fuckin' bastard played dirty.." bakugou snarls behind you.
"right..and this is where we are now" kirishima finishes, sweatdropping.
you nod, eyebrows furrowed. you feel like the puzzle pieces are connecting, but you're somehow just as confused.
"so, what you said about that duel stuff yesterday, and you being replaced—" you turn to bakugou, who finally decides to look at you and it stuns you a bit, you try not to let it show too hard.
"replaced ?!" kirishima repeats "no way, man ! you're our best fighter, there's no way you'd get replaced"
bakugou's eyebrows furrow a bit more in response, his expression bitter as he looks off to the side, you can see the hurt he's trying to mask with anger " 'm obviously not the best if i fuckin' lost.." he chokes out lowly. your heart hurts for him and you want nothing more than to bury your fingers in his hair and have him purr into your touch to make him feel better.
" we all know that yuma guy didn't play fair ! maybe we could have some kinda—re-tournament or something !" kirishima tries encouraging his friend but it's futile as bakugou's jaw tightens again, glaring daggers at his friend, silencing him.
"don't be dumb. there's no way that's ever gonna happen, the elders are gonna see what they wanna see, whatever we have to say doesn't fuckin' matter." he says through his teeth.
" but—"
"enough, kirishima." bakugou snapped "forget it." it's all he utters before walking off to the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.
it's so quiet you could hear a pin drop, kirishima and you hold your breath until he let's out a hopeless sigh.
"hooooh, maaann...i messed up bad.." he covers his face with his hands, groaning into them. you walk up to him to rub his arm comfortingly. you don't really know what else to do but try to comfort him.
"hey, it's alright just—give him some time to cool off, he gets cranky after being around humans for too long." you chuckle. kirishima offers you a tiny smile, letting out a huff of laughter "well, he doesn't encounter humans long enough to get cranky at them."
you tilt your head in confusion "what do you mean ?" you ask.
"bakubro doesn't like humans, he makes that..really clear.." he sweatdrops, his tail swishes slowly. "but i've never seen him take anything from a human before," he looks down at you and flashes you a cute grin "he must really like you !"
your heart skips too many beats.
it pulses like it did yesterday, when he'd been so close. with his breath against your face and his face so close to yours and his lips so close to-
"hey, you okay ? you look a little sick.." you feel something hard against your forehead, then realise it's his pressed against your own "do ya have a fever..?" he mutters almost to himself.
you jump back damn near five meters away from him as you process how close he is. he's way less shy about being physical compared to katsuki, by a long shot.
"i-i'm okay ! no need to worry about me ! m'fine !" he pouts at your response " we must have freaked you out, right ? m'sorry for the outburst." he apologizes, bowing his head a little. maybe it's because he's so nice or you've gotten used to petting dragons, but you place your hand against his spiky hair, rubbing at it softly "it's really not your fault, no need for apologies."
his eyes widen for a fraction of a second then dilate and his tail wags like a puppy's. "okay..f'you say so." he mumbles shyly, his voice now barely a fraction of what is was before " thank you, human.."
you're about to respond when the bathroom door opens and your met with bakugou, who's face morphs from his usual grumpy resting face, to confusion, to being damn near enraged. kirishima's about to talk again, possibly trying to convince his friend to return with him but katsuki marches over before he can even take a breath and proceeds to rip your hand out of kirishima's hair with a growl.
you gasp in surprise, his hand is so warm around your wrist. it makes you feel warm all over. kirishima tries to speak again but is interuppted yet again and if you could think straight you'd feel bad.
"kirishima." katsuki growls lowly, grip still secure around your wrist "come outside with me for a second."
kirishima looks at his friend, then to you and your arm in his grip. then nods, his eyes are a little wide "okay, sure." he says. katsuki grunts in acknowledgement and kirishima walks off ahead, not before offering you a wave and a cheery 'it was nice to meet you human !" you offer him a weak wave in return, still stunned.
before he leaves, katsuki turns to you. he looks down at your hand like he'd forgotten he'd grabbed it. he looks up at you, ears and face reddening, but he doesn't make any move to let go. instead, he harshly grabs your hand like a ragdoll and places it ontop of his head. his eyes remain fixed onto your face, your heart beats so fast your afraid it'll blast out of your chest at this rate.
it takes you a minute but almost reflexively, you curl your fingers to start scratching at the mop of hair on his head. he closes his eyes almost immediatly, chuffing into the air as he leans into you just slightly when you scratch at the spot right next to one of his horns.
the entire interaction takes up 5 seconds, but you feel like decades just passed by, and you really don't mind much. katsuki opens his eyes slowly to look at you. his eyes shine like he has something he wants to say, like he's debating if he should say something.
"i'll be back.." he whispers, voice low and gravely.
"okay.." you whisper back "don't be long. you're makin' dinner tonight, right ?" you giggle.
he huffs in your face and some smoke comes out, he let's out a barely there chuckle when you scrunch your nose up at him " dumbass, don't think i forgot it's your turn. you're lucky m'letting it slide tonight." he snickers. you tug at his horn and he snarls at you. before leaning back up again. he looks at you for just a moment longer then turns away out the door.
the butterflies in your stomach fly around in a fury, flapping their wings away as a dazed smile pulls at your face. you're satisfied enough for now to ignore the seed of doubt growing in your stomach.
" woah, there's tons of humans here, huh ?" kirishima says.
katsuki merely grunts in response. they had decided to settle down at a nearby park. it's crawling with humans and katsuki is somewhat dissapointed to realise he isn't all that bothered by their presence anymore. not as much as before at least.
"it’s annoyin." he mutters halfheartedly, leaning against the park bench they were sitting on, he sighs. kirishima chuckles kicking at some sand, frightening some pigeons nearby. "this place is real peaceful, i can see why you've been here for so long."
bakugou scoffs "wasn't originally what i was plannin’. you think i'd willingly spend my time mingling with humans, shitty hair ?"
"well, kinda seems like it's what you were doing with the human you're living with," kirishima quips, innocently shrugging to himself "just an observation." he adds.
"spell observation, then you can try to act smart with me, dumbass."
"hey, not cool ! i'm not stupid !" kirishima whines. he can't help himself and chuckles. bakugou cracks a faint smirk.
" i wasn't gonna live with that shitty human, just happened to blast through her apartment after losing that stupid tournament. was injured an’ she let me stay till i got better, or whatever." he explains. kirishima furrows his eyebrows, visibly confused.
"i mean, you woulda been blasted off pretty far, but it's been weeks, man.. have you gotten weaker or-"
"of course not, shitty scales !" bakugou growls "as if that weakling extra would've gotten me that bad."
"but..you're healed now, aren't you ?" his red haired friend asked. katsuki cringes at the way he's hesitant to answer him.
"yeah.." he utters.
both men stay quiet after that. katsuki sees a man walking his dog and a couple with a little girl in between them.
"you like that human a lot, don't you." kirishima speaks into the silence. katsuki doesn't respond. he sees two humans walking together, smiling and holding onto each other’s hands.
"tch. as if i could like that shitty human.." he says. kirishima can hear his friend doesn't sound completely sure of himself, despite being the last person he expected to ever be unsure of themselves. the blonde barely lasts a minute before sighing to himself. he leans his forearms against his legs.
"i think.. i think she's..y'know.." katsuki groans, grabbing onto his hair, trying to hide his face to cover up his embarrassment. kirishima only smiles to himself knowingly. kicking his feet up slightly in the air. he scratches his hair in the spot his horns usually are, it feels weird to hide them, he thinks.
"yeah, i know." kirishima answers "so, what do you plan to do ?"
"i don't know" katsuki huffs, letting his hands drop from his hair to back onto his lap. " i don't fuckin' know.."
katsuki returns about an hour later.
you're a little saddened to see that kirishima isn't there with him. "did kirishima leave ?" you ask loud enough so he can hear you from the entrance. he doesn't respond as fast as you'd like him to, the seed of doubt forms again. he walks up to you right infront of the couch and your eyebrows furrow when you see his expression. he refuses to look at you like he did yesterday, your heart squeezes.
"he's waitin' outside." his voice is barely loud enough for you to hear, you turn down the volume of the movie you're watching to hear him better. you see him squint at the floor like he's upset about it.
"oh." you snuggle into the couch, trying your hardest to get comfortable "is he coming over for dinner ?" you ask.
katsuki clenches his fists, taking a breath "no, he—listen." he looks up at you and his eyebrow furrow harder, it's heartbreaking and you want to reach out to him but you can't bring yourself to move.
"i..i have to go." he says, keeping his eyes on you.
you feel like someone just punched you in the gut.
you don't know how or what to feel. you knew he wouldn't be able to stay forever, you're both completely different. you have different lives, different routines—you're fully different beings. but somehow you'd tried to convince yourself that you weren't all that different from each other. that because you'd gotten used to watching movies, bickering, cooking for each other and folding laundry together, you'd thought maybe things could be different. you could've made this your routine.
"o-oh. oh." you say, voice wobbly "oh, yeah, okay..but your injuries.."
"it's fine i—" he cuts himself off, taking a deep breath. you don't like seeing him like this. katsuki decides he hates the look on your face more than anything. " i was supposed to leave a while ago."
your heart hurts, so so much. it hurts because the look on his face shatters you. it hurts because his words are shattering you. you can't help but feel a little stupid, dragons were really something else. they're not like regular humans, of course he wouldn't heal like one.
"okay..okay." your grip on the remote tightens so hard it starts to hurt. katsuki bites at his lip, he stands there like he's stuck to the floor. the conversation is over. no tears, no screaming, no fighting. it's over but his body won't allow him to move. like he should stay, stay where he feels right.
he should stay here with you.
without another word, katsuki turns around and leaves.
you sit there on the couch for a moment longer, watching his back as he walks away from you. going back to where he actually belongs.
back home.
you feel a giant lump in your throat, your eyes cloud up as you hear the door close behind him along with the low sound of the movie still playing on your tv. you lay down on your couch and cry. tears roll down your face as you shove your head deeper and deeper into one of the pillows and sob.
it seems it was your turn to make dinner tonight, after all.
