Ninetales, Fletchinder, shiny Espeon.

I will not be taking constructive criticism.

LISTEN she may or may not ACTUALLY be a fox faunus, that’s really just a headcanon I personally like to play around with, but the fox ALLUSIONS are there. And not just because of the obvious Disney Robin Hood connection. I’ve talked about this at length in the Daemon AU posts so go look at those. She’s getting a damn fox Pokemon.

The Ninetales has actually kinda shitty stats; this was a dirty, hungry Vulpix that Robyn made friends with as a kid, they were not the cream of the crop. They had to fight harder to get where they are.

The Fletchinder is very high-level and could evolve, and probably will someday; they’d both quite like it to be a Talonflame. But Talonflame is big and dangerous-looking and grabs attention. Fletchinder is small and unassuming, kids smile at it, it can get into narrow spaces and go unseen. For now, this is what it needs to be.

Besides. A Talonflame couldn’t sit on Robyn’s shoulder 100% of the time without hurting her. They’ll both miss that, when it evolves.

Shiny Espeon. It’s PSYCHIC it’s GREEN what do you WANT from me.

May:

May is kind of a Water-type girl by accident. 

Her “starter,” much like Qrow’s, almost doesn’t....count. It was given to her by her parents as a tenth birthday present when what she’d actually asked for was to be taken to the Pokecenter so she could pick out her own.

Metaphors? in MY Pokemon?

However, unlike Qrow, May and her freaked-out little Eevee bonded almost instantly, primarily over hating her family. It evolved pretty fast, and she instantly taught her new Vaporeon Acid Armor.

Before long, both of them would learn to turn invisible; but like any good trainer, May looked to her Pokemon first.

The Vaporeon was her “starter” but it also wasn’t.

May’s actual first Pokemon was a Magikarp.

She knew it was a terrible idea. She did.

But she couldn’t leave it, okay? She had to do something. There was a Magikarp being mistreated or in danger of being hurt and she just kind of...took it. She hastily made up a cover story about wanting a Gyarados someday for her parents and kind of passed the whole thing off as a joke, haha, yeah you know, my MAGIKARP lol like that’s even a thing but hey, I want to be a Huntsman so, you know, maybe a Gyarados will come in handy...

She never actually intended to evolve it. She just wanted to--help. Her parents getting her an Eevee for her next birthday was portrayed as a sort of...jocular amusement of the “haha look how eager the kid is to start training, here, have a real pokemon”

It takes a long time to evolve.

It comes very close a few times. May basically does the real-life equivalent of frantically mashing the B button to force it to stay a Magikarp because you can’t evolve right now, you can’t fight back for me right now, if you stop being a harmless afterthought they will take you away.

There will come a day when she stops asking her oldest friend to hold back this way, when it will finally be safe for them both to be angry, but--

Not yet. Not yet. Not now. Please, not now.

She repeats this process with a Feebas after leaving Atlas; the Feebas, encouraged by her long-term protective friendship with a Gyarados who clearly loves her more than life itself, risks allowing itself to be caught. This time there’s nothing to hide. The Milotic evolves when it’s ready.

Somewhere in this process, after leaving for Mantle, she picked up another Eevee. She didn’t actually plan to evolve it, at least not for a while, and had vague thoughts of maybe going for something unexpected, to trip up anyone who designed their team to beat a Water-type specialist.

The Eevee evolved on its own damn schedule

May has a Sylveon now because trans rights.

Fiona:

[Fiona voice] Hey, so you know how I’m filled with rage?

Fiona has a pair of extremely high-level Lopunny and The Single Angriest Wooloo On The Face Of The Earth.

The Wooloo is the powerhouse. She’s had that Wooloo her whole damn life and it will bite your face off.

The Lopunny were selected over a pair of female Machamp specifically because Fiona is a bottomless pit of socialist rage, and Buneary upon capture is filled with the boiling hatred of imprisoned gods.

Don’t fight Fiona.

You will lose and it will hurt.

Literally I don’t even know where to start, we need v8, I need to know you better--

I think Joanna DOES have a female Machamp. It’s particularly sweet-natured, especially for a fighting type.

I can actually see Joanna having an absolute TANK of a Venusaur. She went with a very common, unexciting, traditional starter--before the Happy Huntresses she didn’t...have much, not just financially but like. In terms of a sense of purpose, of drive. She went with the starter she was offered and that it was a bulbasaur was just a one-in-three chance.

But it’s still HER starter, and she stands by her Pokemon. She put in the work and the time and when they did find their passion and drive they did it together, and now they’re unstoppable.

I’m gonna leave that third slot open for when we know her Semblance.

Weeks later, Fiona and Max left Albion, and began their journey north. Max wanted to go home, and his yearning looked out of his eyes like a restless thing. Willing to follow him nearly anywhere, and thinking they had stayed long enough to repay the debt Albion was owed, Fiona agreed to leave.

As they traveled, the weather grew colder and harsher, the trees donned cloaks of evergreen, and snow began to fall. It lay like a blanket of tranquility over the land. Max started pointing out places he recognized with a warmth and nostalgia that Fiona had rarely heard. When they had been in the town, she had been too sick with tension to take in Max’s stories. But here, Fiona was soft with wonder at hearing his stories. Freed from the yoke that had bound her, everything novel seemed wondrous and every sight fed her wakening curiosity. She saw, reflected in Max, that similar lightness of heart -- for the first time since she had known him, he was peaceful. She learned that he purred when he was happy, the same way she vibrated her shoulder scales when she was pleased.

They saw more and more Sandshrew and Sandslash everyday. Excitement and anxiety warred in Fiona. What was she going to do after Max returned to where he belonged? She had no home. She wanted to stay, but should she leave? She was curious about his family. But would they like her?

Time passed. They reached a plateau and hesitated at its edge, each of them pregnant with uncertainty. Trees dotted the plateau, but the land was mostly flat and hard with snow, shrubs, and large burrows. Sandshrew and Sandslash ambled around, clustered in groups to groom each other, ate berries, or mock-sparred. Fiona thought there were more Sandshrew and Sandslash here than she had ever seen in her life. It looked like...community.

After a long pause, Max led Fiona forward.

Max’s parents couldn’t seem to believe that he was back. He was as big as they were now. His mother had grabbed him and then stared at him with speechless and naked emotion. She had then licked his forehead in a gesture laden with familiarity. His father had nuzzled him gravely and gently. His mother kept asking, again and again, what happened? How was he here? And his father watched with a silence that was no less worried, and eyes that were gentle.

The story spilled out of the two of them, accompanied by shared glances. Max told most of it, and Fiona hesitantly took up the thread when it came to the events of the town. His parents told their side of the story: after he had disappeared, they hadn’t known what to do. They had asked everyone they knew, but the other Pokemon weren’t hopeful. Abducted, like Vulpix. What could you do? He was in the land of humans, the property of humans, how could you follow, what did you know? They had tried looking for him, looked and looked and looked, but it was hopeless and helpless.

Time passed, slow as molasses, grinding them inexorably. They tried to look for the same Pokemon Fiona and Max had found -- the ones who gave humans trouble -- but they were no help. He was too long gone now, they said. They had no way to find him.

And then one day, he was back, with a strange Pokemon, a companion, like a sister, with an incredibly story of traveling to lands they had only ever heard of, of humans, of enslavement, of escape. And here he was. Here they were.

They had been staying with his parents for a few weeks now. Fiona was getting used to the way they acted like she was part of the family. She had been intimidated by them, and had shied away and preferred silence, but Max had steadily included her, weaving her undeniably into the fabric of his life. She was embarrassed by his parents’ belief that she'd helped saved Max. She hadn't done that. She had only happened to be there.

One night, she and Max had trekked down the mountain to find a body of water. She needed to clean herself. And here they were: under the star-dotted sky, floating in the smooth, still lake. Max on the riverbank, his spines relaxed. The shared sense of belonging and kinship was deep in her bones. She felt tranquil.

They talked about what they were going to do. Fiona didn't mind staying with Max and his family, like a foster sister. She wanted the sense of belonging she felt with Max. She wanted to feed her curiosity about this new place. His parents wanted them to stay, rest, and be safe. Max wanted peace. He had seen enough of the world, for now. He was content, living with Fiona and his parents.

(Years from now, when they were older, they traveled together again, but this time, it was because they wanted to.)

We entered the President’s room where Lillie and Lusamine are having a heated argument. Now the dialogue is dark for some, but don’t fret. I will poorly translate the dialogue so that you don’t have to. It is time for

I walk in

Lusamine: Oh, you’re back again.

Lillie: You met my mom? And you’re saving my ass yet again? Thanks, I guess.

Lusamine: So you met my daughter?

Me: Yeah, we met when Tapu Koko saved my ass because I had to save Nebby’s ass from a flock of Spearow

Lusamine: Who’s Nebby? Anyway, why must you be acquainted with her? That’s pretty sad, tbh

Lillie: Mom, shut the fuck up and let me do what I want, and what I want is to save Nebby. That’s why Burnet shits on your ass.

Lusamine: No, seriously, who’s Nebby? And who’s Burnet? Anyway, Lillie, why say some shit like that? If I had kids they wouldn’t say that shit to me.

Me: Bitch, that’s your daughter. The fuck outta here with not having any children. You gave birth to her and Gladion, didn’t you? Might as well take them out while you’re at it

Lusamine: Right, they took themselves out of the question. But I’m bi-curious, Lillie, how will you save this Nebby person you’re talking about? I know you’re not a trainer like Gladion is, so you wouldn’t have a clue. We needed Cosmog for research and it went missing as soon as you left.

Lillie: Yeah, and?

Lusamine: I have my own world, and you’re not invited, but it’s all good. You can watch me have some fun.

Lillie: Yeah, cool story, lady, but I ain’t stupid. You ain’t not using Nebby for your little beast fetish. It’ll die if you pull the same stunt Dad pulled.

Lusamine: Well, you have a point. But that’s not my problem. (opens mirror) I wish I had another daughter like you who spoke as broken as English as possible to even understand half the things you’re saying. But what do I know? I’m just another NPC.

(Lusamine disappears)

Lillie: Well, Dezyree, I’m glad you came, but I have to play damsel in distress like I have this whole fucking time. Can you help?

Me: Sure, but you and Lusamine should’ve saved this for the Jerry Springer Show

Lillie: Okay, I ain’t never been here before, what is this?

Lusamine: Cool, you found my secret lair. Come on in, we have cookies.

Me: Cookies?

Lusamine: What’s do you think? I spent 2 years collecting this shit. Ever been to a lab? That’s exactly what it looks like.

(cutscene with Slowpoke, Pyukumuku, and Pikachu)

Lusamine: But I still have to find those beasts. I don’t know how they will react when they do arrive but I’ll make it happen... if I remembered how my husband showed me. Let the beasts see the world, and express their true emotions.

(Hau comes in)

Hau: Yo, Dez!

(Gladion comes in)

Hau: And Lillie, what’s poppin?

Lusamine: My date has arrived. What’s poppin, bro? Gladion, my boy, why must you look like a homeless person? Did you hang out with Team Skull again?

Gladion: Well, you better open your ears, lady, cuz I’m about to throw an earful at you. You better keep that wormhole of your closed. You’re attracting thirsty niggas like homeboy over here (points at Hau) and letting them run loose

Lusamine: (walks over) But you stole Cosmog and you stole Type: Null. The fuck outta here about my wormhole. I gave you life and I will take up Dezyree’s offer and take you both out of it.

Me: I didn’t say that.

Hau: What? (looks at Lillie, then at Gladion, then at Lusamine) They’re your children? What the hell is this, the Jerry Springer Show?

Lusamine: You know what, I should’ve taken Wicke’s idea and call that man to settle our dispute if I know where his show is taped. But your friends here, honey, betrayed me. It’s all good though. I needed an audience for my fetish anyway since Mohn left. In that box here is Cosmog. It’s here if you’re bi-curious yourself. However, I’m still working on finding out how many it can open.

Lillie: Nah, lady, you ain’t forcing Nebby to open a bunch of wormholes even at full force just because you hadn’t have sex in 2 years. Anyway, do you want it to die, because I most certainly ain’t.

Lusamine: Sex? I ain’t about that. Ready for some black magic fuckery, kids? I’ll show you the wormholes I was able to open.

(Cutscene)

Lusamine: Tada. I’ve done it. Mohn, I’ve done it. Cosmog, I hate to admit, but that was a little too much power. That’s all I wanted tho. See, Gamefreak people, I have fulfilled the story as a villian.

(more cutscene)

Nihilego: Um, hi?

Lusamine: Nihilego, you came.

(Guzma walks in)

Guzma: You got the beasts, ma’am?

Lusamine: Guzma, you came. Do this for me, please. Pick any of them to start with.

Guzma: Got it, boss.

Gladion: Hold it. Null and I got Nihilego. Hau, it’s your turn to get beat by ya boi Guzma. Dezyree, since you’re the main character, you get to face my mom.

Lusamine: Impressive planning skills, Gladion. All this battling is going to scare Nihilego, but I’ll battle Dezyree, just because this game told me to.

Battle: Sabrina vs Clefairy, Victoria vs Milotic, Free Hugs vs Mismagius, Jason vs Bewear, and Poli vs Lilligant, as Krystal and I sat and ate popcorn

Lusamine: But how? I know I’m supposed to lose because the game told me to, but I wasn’t aware you’re this strong. But... but... I want this! Do you guys understand now? I was told by Gamefreak to be a terrible mom and be evil for my beast fetish.

(Nihilego starts disappearing)

Lusamine: Nihi, don’t you dare leave me here. Guzma, let’s follow her. We got beast balls on deck

(Nihilego, Lusamine, and Guzma left)

Lillie: Nebby, you okay? Nebby?

Gladion: Um, I think it evolved.

Lillie: It has an evolution? That’s news to me.

Gladion: Alright, people. Let’s file out.

And so we left Lusamine’s secret lair, where we saw Wicke again. There was talk about summoning the legendary Pokemon (aka Lunala), and we spent the night at the paradise. We left for the dock and we see Lillie in her “Z-move” form, even down to copying the Normalium Z dance. Gladion gave her the Sun Flute and I got the Master Ball. Hau joined us for the ride, but before I left, I talked to people visiting the paradise (one said Lusamine was a nice lady. Um, you missed the drama. Another mentioned Lusamine’s dad, but does he even know about his daughter’s obsession with the ultra beasts tho).

We made it to Poni Island, which is where we will start tomorrow.

Some announcements: I’ll be doing wonder trades when Pokebank updates or when I finish the game, whichever comes later. Also, expect Victoria to evolve in at least 2 episodes.

Pokémon trainer Grey.

Grey was a volunteer at Fuji House in Lavender Town where he helped care for sick, injured, or orphaned Pokémon. After Red defeated Team Rocket at Pokémon Tower and brought Mr. Fuji back, Grey was inspired to set out on his own Pokémon journey with the Eevee he had been taking care of at Fuji House and had bonded with. He named the Eevee Adam.

Grey started his journey by exploring the entrance of Rock Tunnel, though it was too dark to traverse. He caught a Zubat and named her Zuzu, as well as a Mankey he named Manny. He returned to town and stopped by Pokémon Tower to pay his respects to the the Pokémon laid to rest there, and was lucky enough to catch a Ghastly he named Hanz, and a Cubone he named Bonny. Then he headed onwards towards Saffron City.

On his way, he captured a Vulpix he named Fiona, and an Ekans he named Ekhardt, But was stopped at the gate. Apparently Saffron City was closed off. So instead Grey took the underground path to Celadon City.

At Celadon, Grey explored the department store and played at the casino, winning an Abra at the prize exchange. He also took the opportunity to train at the Celadon City Pokémon gym, though it took some convincing for the ladies there to allow him in. Eventually, he challenged Erika, and after a fierce Pokémon battle he walked away with the Rainbow Badge.

He tried to head to Cycling Road, but a Snorlax was blocking the way. Luckily, by now Saffron City had opened up again, and news arrived that a child had defeated Team Rocket at the prestigious Silph Co, ousting them from Saffron. So Grey went to Saffron City.

While he was there, Grey adopted a stray Meowth, and named it Lucky. He also challenged the Fighting Dojo and won a Hitmonlee. Training at the Saffron City Pokémon Gym was grueling, and he didn’t quite have a knack for it. But Hanz, now a Haunter, learned psychic type moves there.

It took many attempts before Grey was able to defeat Sabrina and earn the Marsh Badge. He challenged her over and over again until finally his Pokémon prevailed. Zuzu was fully evolved into a Crobat by now, a Pokémon Grey had never seen before.

Taking the road south to Vermilion City, Grey caught an Oddish and named it Ophelia. He explored the beach, being given an old fishing rod by a fisherman, and managed to catch a Magikarp with it that he named Maggie. Grey also visited the Pokémon Fan Club and exchanged stories and bragging rights about Pokémon there.

Challenging the Pokémon Gym was no easy task, but Grey came out the victor and Lt. Surge awarded him the Thunder Badge. Then Grey took the Diglett Cave to Viridian City, catching a Diglett on the way.

At Viridian City, Grey attended the Pokémon School. But when he went to challenge the Pokémon Gym he discovered it was closed.

Disappointed, he set out to the Viridian Forest to make his way to Pewter City. There he caught a Weedle and named it Wesley, and a Pikachu he named Pika, as well as a Rattata he named Kathy. By the time he exited the forest, Wesley had already evolved into a Beedrill.

In Pewter City, Grey visited the museum and saw the space exhibit, as well as the fossils of extinct Pokémon. He challenged Brock, the Gym Leader, and walked away with his fourth badge, the Boulder Badge. Then he took the road to Mount Moon.

Along the way, Grey caught a Spearow he named Spencer, a Jigglypuff he named Jiggly, and a female Nidoran he named Rina. He was glad to find a Pokémon Center at the foot of Mount Moon, and took the opportunity to rest there and get his Pokémon their checkups.

In Mount Moon Grey caught a lot of Pokémon; a Geodude he named Georgia, a Clefairy he named Claire, and a Paras he didn’t nickname. He also dug up some moonstones, and a helix fossil, as well as some star pieces.

On the other side of Mount Moon, Grey and his Pokémon made their way down towards Cerulean City, passing by some martial artists along the way. They were kind enough to teach Manny some karate. Grey joined in, though he fumbled a lot at it.

In the City, Grey sold the star pieces and used the money to buy a bicycle. He then went north to visit Bill at the Cape, and see the Pokémaniac’s collection. After returning to Cerulean, Grey challenged Misty, the Gym Leader, and earned the Cascade Badge. Then it was off to Saffron City once again.

Grey took this time to shop, getting much needed supplies, before heading back to Celadon City. There he purchased a Thunderstone and evolved Pika into a Raichu. Then he went over to the Cycling Road, which was now cleared of the giant sleeping Pokémon.

Grey caught a Doduo during a rest stop, which he named Duey. He also caught a Ponyta he named Jenny. The ride was all downhill, so he didn’t take long to make it to Fushia City. But by that time he was exhausted. He spent a whole day resting with his Pokémon at the Pokémon Center.

When he felt up to it, Grey took his Pokémon to see the zoo, where they explored the exhibits and marveled at the collection of rare and endangered Pokémon like Lapras and Kangaskhan. Afterwards, Grey went on the safari at the Safari Zone, where he caught Ryhorn, Tauros, Exeggcute, Venonat, and even Dratini, thanks to a much better fishing rod he purchased. Grey also fished up and caught Slowpoke, Psyduck, Goldeen, and Poliwag.

Grey challenged Koga at the Pokémon Gym, but it took all of his wit and wiles to reach the ninja Gym Leader. Defeating him was not easy, and took multiple attempts. But each time Grey and his Pokémon became more prepared and more aware of their surroundings. Eventually, Grey earned the Soul Badge.

Grey headed to the beach for some surfing, and managed to catch a Tentacool he named Jill. After a while he was able to evolve Jill into a Tentacruel, and ride it to the Seafoam Islands, where he was able to catch Seal, Krabby, Shellder, Staryu, and Horsea.

After continuing on towards Cinnabar island, Grey rested up before visiting the Pokémon research lab and was surprised to find that they could resurrect an Omanyte from the fossil he collected at Mount Moon. He also explored the burned down mansion, catching a Koffing, Ditto, Grimer, and Magmar. He then challenged the Gym Leader, Blaine, and won the Volcano Badge.

Afterwards, Grey travelled north to Pallet Town, catching a Tangela on an outcropping of land along the way, where he stopped by Professor Oak’s Pokémon Lab. Grey still had one more Badge to collect, the one from Viridian City. But when he traveled north to see if it had opened, it had been completely abandoned. This would end Grey’s Pokémon journey... for now.

Grey flew on the back of Spencer, who was now a Fearow, back to Lavender Town, where he rested and reconnected with friends and family. Then he took the Rock Tunnel to the north, catching a Machop and an Onix. When he emerged on the other side, thanks to the light provided by Pika, Grey then travelled down the water to the abandoned power plant, where he was able to catch a Voltorb and a Magnemite, as well as an Electabuzz.

He returned to Lavender Town again, and was content to only make short trips for the next few years. Until he heard that Viridian City Gym was open once again. He went to challenge the Gym Leader, Blue. After winning the Earth Badge, Grey set out to the Pokémon League Headquarters to face the Elite Four.

The battles were grueling, and it took him many attempts before he defeated them all. But when he finally did, the Pokémon Champion was nowhere to be found.

Grey retired to a Lavender Town and became a Pokémon Breeder, taking care of Pokémon as was his true passion.

The brunette looked lost in her own thoughts for a moment, but Chandler didn't comment on it. They didn't know each other well, and it was none of his business. Especially once she regained her focus. Petting the new kitten, he watched as the sanctuary employee looked at the boards. They listed name, age, and a random 'fact' about them in the style of the tiktoks that had been popular earlier in the year. One cat was listed as Rihanna, 3 years old, this cat has nine grammys and a successful cosmetic brand. As Fiona offered a 'trade', Chandler nodded in agreement. "Deal. Meet Poppy and Vulpix." Poppy had technically been named after the orange flower, but Chandler would always associate her with the eccentric musician instead.

she doesn't actually notice chandler's hesitation to shake her hand. there's kittens in tow, but her mind is somewhere else completely. it's why she hated this time of the year; because it's when everyone wants to just unload their shit. and while these incredibly adorable kittens certainly weren't shit, fiona felt as though she was constantly having to clean up after the actions of others. of course, her inner turmoil's masked behind a radiant smile as chandler takes her hand.

she happily hands one of the kittens to him; his affection for the animal lights up his face, and it's enough to snap fiona back into reality. "well, looks like you have dibs." she jokes, looking around at the empty space. then, brown hues scan the place once more as he mentions the info boards. oh, she mouths, still cradling the other kitten as she approaches the board. "this is the sweetest thing," her mind thinking of the different ways they could incorporate a similar idea at the sanctuary. "how about this... you can name the kittens... if you don't tell people that i totally jacked this idea from you guys." she laughs lightly at her not-serious-at-all proposal.

They were soon discharged from the Pokemon Center. During a battle, after knocking out the opponent, Fiona suddenly realized what’d been plaguing her. She was about to evolve. Time slowed to a drip. Thoughts flashed through her mind. She felt her body tense and energy and potential surge through her.

But suddenly she didn’t know if she wanted to or not. And she realized she could stop it if she wanted to – she could deny it – she could hold back the force… She felt herself poised at the edge of something breathless and huge. But she wasn't scared. She felt again the energy crackling through her. She wanted to know what she could become. She wanted to know what she could be capable of. She had never seen elders of her type. In the nursery that she had been born, there had only been Jangmo-o; they had been taken care of by Audino and Chansey and Blissey.

And so she made her choice. When it was over, she examined her new body. She was… big. She had the sudden thought that she was going to tower over Max. Her arms were heavy. She felt powerful. She touched the scales at her throat. She swung her tail experimentally, and almost overbalanced and fell. It was much longer than she had thought it was. Experimentally, she jumped and kicked. It was so easy. She wanted to punch a tree to see what she could do, but before she could do anything, Tedcy withdrew her.

The next time she saw Max, they stared at each other for a soundless moment. She had been right; he was tiny. She was looking down at him, and seeing his liquid black eyes looking up at her. And she was no longer afraid of his Ice. She didn’t flinch just from the cold air surrounding him; it was a little cold, but it didn’t make her body ache. Understanding flashed through her – it was because she had a secondary typing that offset her weakness to Ice. She was amazed. Did this mean…

She was shaken out of her thoughts when Max made a comment. She turned her mind away, for now.

The weather got colder as they moved towards the ice mountain. Fiona was grateful she had evolved when she did. Her pre-evolved self would have struggled and became weaker and sluggish and vulnerable, as any cold-blooded creature would have.

One day, as they were exploring a route under Tedcy’s orders, Fiona came across a shard with a snowflake pattern. It emanated a cold so intense it made her bones ache. Startled, she stopped trying to touch it. She had thought she was impervious. 

When Max came over to look at it, he was strangely fascinated, and drew closer and closer to it, as though he was spellbound, as though he couldn’t help himself. Fiona was alarmed. She almost grabbed him back, but he seemed to remember her and he looked up at her and he said in a strange voice, this will help me evolve. And then he touched his forehead to it.

His evolved form looked like him, and yet not. He was big. She was eye-level with the big spikes on his head and back. He had claws that looked like scimitars. The ice-igloo had been transformed into a cluster of thick and clear quills of ice on his back and head. He looked powerful, like he was capable of savagery. But his eyes were the same. It was still Max looking at her. 

His new form looked like someone had taken his fierceness and toughness and remade him from the inside out, so that those were the first things you saw, instead of the deceptively docile-looking, prey-like body his pre-evolved self had had. It made her wonder how she looked like. She asked Max. He said she looked quick and powerful, like he could fight and win any battle. It made her very pleased to hear that. She felt powerful. She hadn't realized it, but she had really disliked how weak and dependent she had been.

The ice mountain drew them like moths to a beacon. The weather got gloomier and colder and wetter. Max grew increasingly quiet, but his eyes were bright as though a flame had been lit. 

One day, they arrived in a village where the soil was black and damp and it was perpetually raining. When they were let out of their Pokeballs, Max fairly quivered with excitement. He whispered that they were here. This was the foot of the mountain. 

They were both tense: Max with excitement, Fiona with nerves. But even through her nerves, Fiona noticed that the town was quiet and wary. There was something strange about this town – a thick tension in the air.

As they explored the town, Max’s tongue loosened and he told Fiona of occasions and exploits when he and his family had ventured here. He said that it had always been a last resort, during winters when they were starving and desperate. This town was unsafe, more so than an average human settlement. His parents had always muttered things he didn’t understand, things about Pokemon and humans turning on each other. 

One evening, they ended up sitting outside the Pokemon Center, unsure what to do. Fiona racked her brain trying to recall all she could about Pokeballs, but she had no idea how to destroy one. It was impervious to physical blows. Neither of them had psychic powers. What were they going to do? Fiona saw how hard it was on Max, to be so close to freedom and yet unable to do anything. She saw the way he looked at the path up the mountain. His longing, his desperation.

But how were they even to get to the Pokeballs? It was always tucked in Tedcy’s belt. And they only had so much time before Tedcy moved on.

They talked these things to the death, but neither of them knew what to do.

One day, as they sat around, feeling bleak, Max suddenly turned to her. His dark eyes were gleaming. He’d thought of something. 

When he had been a Sandshrew, they’d all known of the poaching problems that the Vulpix and Ninetales faced. Even the Sandshrew weren’t exempt. But after a while, another rumor had started up. That the grieving mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters – the left-behind loved ones – had had enough. And that was when it started becoming unsafe for Max and his family to come into town. Fiona’s mind flashed to the words Max had said – Pokemon and humans turning on each other.

And so Max wanted to contact these Pokemon. Ask for help to break free. Fiona was… cautious. It was all so vague. They had no name, no descriptions, no nothing, only the rumors Max had heard. What if things had changed? What if they were just rumors? How were they even to begin to find this thing out? 

But she looked at Max, and Max was – he was buoyant with hope. The moments where she saw him bright-eyed and lighthearted were rare. She didn’t think this would turn up any results, but she wanted to put the light back in his eyes. She agreed to help. 

But she couldn’t help worrying what would happen to Max once things didn’t turn out well. She had the sinking feeling it might crush him.

And so they spent the next few days venturing further and further away from the town, speaking to wild Pokemon. The first Pokemon they approached, a Vulpix, refused to talk to them as soon as they mentioned getting help to get free. They exchanged glances, but moved on. A fellow Sandshrew told them to avoid the human-Pokemon troubles if they wanted to be safe. The Rattata they met gathering berries was likewise leery. After a day or two, they began to see the wariness and indifference of the wild Pokemon. Most wanted to just keep out of the way of the humans. The town was bad, all the Pokemon knew that. It was bad, bad, bad.

Max seemed to get angrier and almost desperate. The word had began to spread: the wild Pokemon started avoiding them. She felt like they were in over their heads.

As the days passed with no progress, Max became quieter and quieter. The light in his eyes died. He looked like he was retreating and retreating and retreating. Fiona couldn’t bear it, but she didn’t know what to say. There was nothing to be said. She wished she had been wrong.

It looked like Tedcy was leaving soon. Like the light going away as dusk fell, life seemed to seep out of Max. He didn’t talk even when spoken to. His eyes were so bleak. He looked like he was in a living nightmare.

One evening, they were waiting outside the Pokemon Center for time to pass so dinner would be served (not that Max ate much). The silence between them was thick with misery. It was so heavy Fiona could only look at Max in sick worry. She didn’t speak. Couldn’t speak. She had never been good at talking to Pokemon. It was always Max who knew how to listen to others, Max who was curious about the life of others, Max who talked to others. But now it was he who was trapped. His worst fear, his most hated dread, was coming true. She wished she could think of something to do, to say. But she couldn’t. She had tried, but he hadn’t heard anything she said. Her attempts to help him were clumsy and lifeless. She felt useless and helpless with worry.

Unable to bear it, she looked away. An Absol was picking its way through the grass. Watching it with dull curiosity, she realized after a while that it was headed their way. It stopped before them. She glanced at Max, but he didn’t look up. She looked back at the Absol. Words felt awkward on her tongue after so much silence, but she spoke to it. Her. It was a her. Her name was Albion. After a glance at Max, she spoke to Fiona alone.

As she spoke, Fiona couldn’t believe what she was hearing. It was like a dream come true. Albion had heard of Fiona and Max asking around because of trouble with trainers. She was here to try and free them. She was part of the vigilante Pokemon gang that Max had heard of. She asked them how she could help.

Involuntarily, Fiona looked at Max. He was looking up. For the first time in days, a spark of life was in his eyes. She thought he would want to speak, but when he stayed silent, she awkwardly told their tale. She even pointed Tedcy out to the Absol. Albion.

And after that, things happened as if in a dream. Fiona and Max waited in the outskirts of the town, and then Albion appeared, Pokeballs – their Pokeballs in her mouth – she’d learned Thief just for things like this, she’d said – and then they were following Albion up the path to the mountain – and then a question that had been worrying at Fiona broke free: they were, in effect, stealing Trainer’s Pokemon. Won’t the humans retaliate?

Albion turned grim at that. The Pokemon near the town would have to lay low for the months after this. Every time a Trainer was stolen from, groups of more powerful Trainers appeared like maggots out of a corpse to ‘protect’ the victimized trainers from savage beasts and to find the lost Pokemon. No one thought to ask what the Pokemon themselves wanted.

Thick bitterness underscored Albion's words, making her voice rough as gravel. A chill rippled through Fiona. It sounded like the beginnings of something ugly and big.

Fiona watched with her heart in her throat, feeling both unreal and yet so awake, as Albion flung a blade of dark energy at their Pokeballs. There was a sharp crack and then the Pokeballs fell open. 

And just like that, they were free.

She looked at Max. He was electric with intensity. His eyes burned with triumph.

The next few days, they lay low with Albion and her friends. They had schedules to stick to, something similar to the chores Tedcy used to assign them, but Fiona didn't mind. This was something they'd chosen, not something chosen for them. Secluded away from the trainers rampaging up and down the mountainside, this period felt like a reprieve. The other Pokemon weren't all friendly, but they accepted the two of them well enough. Fiona interacted mostly with Albion, who was jolly and calm. There were a few she actively avoided; those who had bitterness coiling off them like an acrid odor. Those scared her. There was something hard and ugly about their faces, like they had been living their nightmare for so long that nothing mattered anymore.

Max was slowly coming back to life, like a stone golem creaking as it started moving its joints again. It was taking him time to climb out of the pit he had fallen into. Every day, he was a little more present.

Fiona was protective of Max. She saw him as though he were wounded, and was recovering. For the first time, she was the one who tried to talk to others, to find things out, to listen to them. Always before, it had been Max who had done that, because she had always felt so graceless in her attempts to engage with others. She never seemed to know what to say, how to act, what to feel. Max always seemed to know. It had always been easier to just have him do it. But now she did it for them both -- it never occurred to her that she was doing it to protect him; it was just something she saw that she had to do, now.

And it still wasn’t easy. Many a time, she still chose to remain silent and withdraw, or she said the wrong thing. But -- she tried.
