And Fiona is right there, and Leliana definitely can contact Surana, and you can see how I ended up here. I haven't thought much about Surana as a Warden, since my Surana is not, so this was a fun one to dive into!

Even though this didn't quite fit anyone's specific requests, I've been all up in my Last Flight feels since reading the novel a couple months ago and couldn't resist. Garahel, the city elf Warden hero, his legacy of lifting up and protecting the lowest in society lost to a history that didn't want to remember his ears. I broke my own heart a bit exploring how his knowledge of that legacy might have worn him down by the end ;-; (also check out the quote that I used to title this fic because DAMN if it isn't Grey Wardens to a T, especially elven and/or mage wardens)

An exploration of the broken friendship between King Alistair & Warden Commander Surana after she spares Loghain, and how they come back together over the years. Not gonna lie, I did not have a Warden Surana OC before I dove into this fic but. uh. now I do 😂 it was a lot of fun to look at this friendship dynamic from a more turbulent angle!

WIP WEDNESDAY

Part 1 Chapter 6: Compelled to forge on

Cullurana reunion!!! It's, as I put it in the chapter notes, a trainwreck 💖 I love them.

I did not realize how short this chapter is vs how long the next two chapters are.... oooof. my bad. Also! The chapter total went up! While working on Part 2, I ended up splitting chapter 1 (Ch11) into three chapters... so um. I decided the first chapter actually belonged at the end of Part 1, rather than the beginning of Part 2. oops 😬

BUT the two scenes that were absolutely DESTROYING me for weeks are finally done. I'm finally adding new stuff to Part 2! Progress! Or something...! There was crying involved. (the major character deaths are in part 2 and 3 and it was Not. Fucking. Fun. writing the first one, I mean, as a writer, fun. as a reader I Am Not Okay)

Hey guys ! I'm doing anything else beside playing the actual game. But after the hype of veilguard, i wanted to recreate my wardens with the character creation of baldur's gate.

Here's my very first warden ever ; Oranathra Surana. Elf, Mage. Romanced Alistair and let Anora rule. Was okay with the dark ritual. Didn't side with the Architect, let Morrigan leave peacefully through the eluvian. Became the warden commander of Ferelden. Got two children with Alistair ; A boy and a girl named Zathvin and Fiona. Long lost sister of Inquisitor Nesiawen Lavellan. Is a metamorph and a knight enchanter. Left the staff aside for a two handed magical sword. Her mother used to be an ancient guardian of mythal's temple before she met her father.

My son, King Aedan Cousland. Romanced Morrigan, Performed the dark ritual. Is ruling with Anora. Didn't side with the Architect. Left through the eluvian with Morrigan to raise Kieran. Had another son with Anora named ; Bryce. Is a champion and Spirit warrior. Use a shield and a sword.

Elenaril Mahariel. Romanced Zevran, Was okay with the dark ritual. Alistair is ruling alone, but wished Elenarial could have stayed at his side. Somehow. Sided with the architect (i think). Let Morrigan leave through the eluvian peacefully. Is a ranger and a duelist. Became blind from one eye after the betrayal of Ostagar. Often travel with Zevran, whenever if it's for finding a cure for the calling or other chilling and deadly matters. Use dual blades and knifes.

Lucianna Cousland. Romanced Alistair and became Queen with him. Was okay with the dark ritual. Didn't side with the architect. Let Morrigan leave through the eluvian peacefully. Is trying her best to help Alistair commanding and leading his armies, while taking care of her grey wardens. Desperately want children with Alistair but tries to find a cure to the calling first. Is a Berserker and a reaver. Use a Two handed sword gifted by Sten.

And my last addition so far; Mara Tabris. Is romancing Leliana. Anora and Alistair ruling side by side. Was okay with the dark ritual. Siding with the architect. Let Morrigan alone through the eluvian peacefully. Is often leaving the keep to find a cure for the calling so she could fully enjoy her life with Leliana one day. Is a bard and a legionnaire scout. Use a magnificent handcrafted bow and dagger, gifts from her beloved.

Anyway now that I’m thinking about Surana, just reading through some old prompt fills and having Jowan-related feelings:

In 9:20 Dragon:

The elf that’s allergic to elfroot—that’s going to stick.  “How could you not know?” the mage in the clinic asks, anger in her voice, as the templar waits to walk him back. Surana looks at his shoes. He doesn’t tell her he’d never seen the stuff before, that he was only dragged here last week—that all those apprentices who laughed never listened long enough to learn his name, that he wants, more than anything, to go home. He’s learned they like it better when he doesn’t talk. And Surana really, really likes to talk.  They send him to a new class, one that’s working with a different herb today, and sit him next to two human boys he’s never seen. One has his nose buried in a book, the first in a stack of five, and he jumps when the enchanter shouts at him to put them away. The other whispers something in his ear that makes him laugh. They’re friends already, then.  Surana looks down, pulling his new robe tightly over the splotchy rash on his hands. He wants to disappear. “Hey, I don’t think we’ve met before!” Surana startles, eyes wide. They’re talking to him? “I’m Jowan. This is Garrett. What’s your name?”

In 9:35 Dragon:

He’s always been Surana, just Surana. It always felt too ostentatious, too lofty, too ridiculous—Garahel—being named for the hero who stopped the fourth Blight. He can’t change the world. He can’t even convince a room full of arguing mages that they should support separating from the Chantry.  Today’s meeting of the Libertarian Fraternity is quiet, angry, with none of the hope that tied them together just a few years before. Until Fiona strides through the door. “I have someone new who’d like to meet with us,” she says. “You’ve heard of him, I imagine.”  Surana’s surrounded by whispers—“The Hero of Ferelden!” “The Warden-Commander?”—but Surana just sees him. His old friend Garrett. Fiona had hoped they’d all have dinner together that night, but they steal away to the corner of the hall, just the two of them. They don’t say his name, not yet, but they set out a chair for Jowan anyway, the lost member of their trio. “It’s good to see you again,” Surana says, clasping his shoulder. He can’t resist making fun of him, for how many children in the coming years will be called Garrett, too.

Thinking about the mage rebellion and Fereldan. My main Warden is a Surana that sticks Alistair with the throne so I never really gave it much thought about why Ferelden's ruler would accept the rebellion.

But I replayed and something stuck out to me: Connor was frustrated about them being in Redcliffe. He asks how that could be seen to be a good idea. And honestly? Given that the Wardens rule Amaranthine and it's a major point of entry from the sea it wouldn't be that hard to have set Fiona's people there and gotten fewer side eyes by the locals. They're used to Wardens, mages ain't that weird in comparison. Especially after the Warden-Commander let a possessed corpse follow them home from the swamp like a lost mabari.

But Ferelden has a population problem. Lots of dead young men and women just at Ostagar, let alone the southern hills, the bannorn via the rebellion, and Denerim. And the survivors of the Siege at Denerim would have had high chances of Blight Sicknesses, there were probably epidemics following 9:31. That would have crippled the fighting population. That doesn't even count that a lot of the refugees who made it to the Marches and elsewhere never returned.

Redcliffe is the fortified gateway to Ferelden from the /Orlesian/ border. The same Orlais that certain powers (Gaspard) want to return to being an expanding empire.

Celene's hold was weak. Weak enough the Inquisitor could arrange to break it entirely.

The Chantry is primarily Orlesian and that would give the mages a reason to not want Orlesian control if it came down to Gaspard as Emperor bringing chevaliers back across the Frostbacks.

I don't think Ferelden took the mages in out of generosity. At least not entirely. I think they saw a chance to add a significant military force to their country if their gamble paid off - and that's why Teagan agreed. Unfortunately for the rebellion the Tevinter thing is a definite point of no return - the mages weren't loyal enough to their own cause, to where they were, to continue the risk of keeping them.

Hilariously enough Finn isn't my HoF kid. Ciara Tabris never became a Warden, in my mind she was a servant that served a huge rol on ruling Ferelden later on because she had a lot of information.

He is actually Ciara and Ronan Cousland's son (biologically)

Zevran meets him in Origins when he's 3 years old and becomes an integral part of his life, especially as he marries his mother. They do truly love each other as father and son, even if Finn has complicated feelings about it because he can't remember Ronan (he died lol)

My Hero of Ferelden is another elf, my girl Rune Surana. But her and Alistair's daugther Emilia is 9 years old and dealing with her own issues with Ferelden burning and all.

I did think of Finn romancing Lucanis because his mother married Zevran, because the thought of this random elven family having a Rehabilitation Centre for Crows cracks me up.
