Chapter 1: Plants Outdoor

“Hey fern”

“Hmmmf?”

“I’m gonna go run some errands. Can you hang out with Jake one more time while I’m gone?”

“Mhm..”

Finn thumbs ups Jake. Jake thumbs ups back.

Finn leaves as Jake goes to cook in the kitchen.

“Fern! Man, are you awake?” Jake asks aloud.

He waits for an answer but there’s just silence

“Fern?!” He, even louder, asks again.

He then finally goes back to the top of the treehouse.

“Hey man, why haven’t you an-” Jake cut himself off when he saw Fern wasn’t even on the treehouse anymore.

Meanwhile,

Plat, plat, plat.

Fern’s constant footsteps press and lift upon the grass as he walks.

“Ugh, where am I going again?” He asks to himself.

“Well, I ain’t doing anything.” The Grass-Demon responds.

“It’s just me, huh?” Fern stares down at his feet as they start loosing consistency.

He stops walking and stands there for a few seconds before sitting down.

“What do you think Finn’s doing right now?”

“You’re always so worried about him. Why? He’s what’s holding you back! Take advantage of it!”

“I…What am I supposed to take advantage of?”

“He CARES about you! You should use that to your own use!!”

“But what’s the point? It’s a waste of time and energy.” Fern complains as he lays down on his back.

“‘What’s the point!??’ The point is that being FINN could make your life SO. MUCH. BETTER!! You won’t have to be called Grass-Finn or be ignored anymore! Everyone will LOVE you!!”

Fern hesitates for a second.

“How am I supposed to do that?”

“You lure him in and turn on his back!”

“And how would I do that?”

GD hesitates.

“Look Fern, you might not like it but…to FULLY replace him: you’re gonna have to ‘get rid of him’.”

“Get rid of him?”

“Yes. Get rid of him. Kill him. Slaughter him. End him. Destroy him. Or!, lock him up somewhere and let him ROT!”

“Isn’t that a little…extreme?”

“You have Finn’s memories, I’m sure he’s seem some ‘extreme’ stuff before.”

“Oh yeah…Are you sure this is the only way.” Fern squints at GD.

“Of course!! How about YOU think of a better way?”

Fern thinks for a bit. “Mm yeah, I got nothin’.”

“See? Now just make him think you’re okay and you’ll be able to repl-”

GD was cut off with: “Fern? What’re doing out here?”

Fern ‘Finn scream’s

“Oh it’s you!” He blushes.

It was HW. They had just happened to pass Fern. They walk up to him with a slight glare.

“What’re doing all the way out here?” They ask again. “Oh I just wanted some time to myself! H-How do you know me?”

“Finn talks about you all the time.” They revealed as They smiled a bit. She sits down next to Fern. “Y’know, he seems sorta jealous that you have inhuman powers and junk.”

“He is?” He questions as he tries to shut up GD.

“Yeah, he says you can like, stretch like Jake and you have that built in Grass Sword he used to have.”

“Ah yeah,” Fern takes out the sword and stares at it. He then laughs to himself. “We used to be so scared of it.”

“Why don’t you hang with Finn?”

“He said he was gonna be out, he wanted me and Jake to hang out while he was gone.”

“Where’s Jake?”

“I left him at the house. Heh, I bet he’s looking for me this very second.”

Meanwhile,

“Bmo, I should really be looking for Fern right now.”

“Wait! I’ve got another trick ip my sleeve!!”

Little Bmo is dressed as a magician. He pulls cards out of his left sleeve. “Literally!! Tada!” He then bows.

“Okay Bmo, I REALLY need to look for Fern before Finn comes back!”

“Ugh! Fine party pooper!” Bmo turns and walks away. “Neptr, wanna be my Magician’s-Assistant??”

Jake stretches out a window and becomes huge. “FERN??? FERN!??? WHERE ARE YOU????

I finished my 200k finnfern fic! This thing made me go absolutely feral, I wrote it on my phone in a month lol.

Keep Yourself (redux) is my attempt at giving Fern an actual character beyond a Narcissus reference, he was very engaging as a concept and deserved better, so there's some "how do demons work, how does he deal with being one, where tf did he go in between Do No Harm and the Islands Arc" etc. I have a lot of Fern thoughts, and the fic is all of them vomited out into a more pleasant form.

“I saw Fern, when I was taken by the Lord of Eternity,” he utters against his palm before dropping it, “and he said something that’s stuck with me this whole time. I think about it constantly.” Finn glares towards his feet, narrowing his eyes and baring his teeth. “‘I can’t save everyone, and maybe not everyone needs saving. Do I really think everyone’s better off because of me.’ He was right and I got him killed because I couldn’t just accept that he didn’t need my ‘help’.” His eyes squeeze shut, knuckles turning white as he fists his hand at his side. “I’m tired, Prismo,” Finn whispers, voice crackling roughly over the tar in his lungs.

Chapter Two: I’m Okay

“Heh, I bet he’s looking for me this very second.” Fern wonders. “Probab-” “FERN!!! THERE YOU ARE!!! I’VE BEEN LOOKING EVERYWHERE- Oh, hey Hw.” Jake exceeds. “Hey man.” She nods.

“Hey Jake..” Fern looks away. Jake looks at Fern.

Meanwhile,

“Hey Doc- Finn?? Why are you here??” Ice King complains. Finn stares for a moment before clearing his throat. “So what’s been bothering you?” Finn takes out. pen and clipboard. “Uh, well my back aches and everything smells like licorice- except for licorice, which tastes like-”

Finn jumps onto the hospital bed and cracks Ice King’s back. “ACK!” He yelps. “So how do you feel now?” Finn asks, standing on the bed. “I feel…GREAT!!!” Ice King floats around the room. “I FEEL 500 YEARS OLD AGAIN!!!” Finn smiles thinking he’s doing his job well.

CRASH!!

“Yikes! I’ma get outta here!” Ice King yells as he flies out excitingly. “FINN!!” Jake smashes in holding Fern. “Hey buddy, y’know what? How about you have Fern help you?” He then stumbles out. “Ah.” He smacks his lips. “How about you just sit until I need you?” Fern gets up. “Okay..”

Patient after patient, Fern just watches. Until finally, something interesting happens. “When I drop this sword: Susan’s hero reflexes will kick in! Any questions?” One doctor puts his hand up but another doctor puts it back down. “No no, I wanna see where this goes.” Finn drops the sword. Doctor Princess walks in. “Hey guys, I’m back fr- WHAT THE FLIP??” She throws her glasses, knocking the sword from hitting Susan. “FINN!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!!” “I’ll tell you.” Fern volunteers from the chair in the corner. “Susan would’ve been fine. In fact, she might have even woke up.” Doctor Princess hesitates. Then exhales. “Both, out now. I’ll take care of this.” Finn returns her coat and both boys leave the Candy Kingdom hospital. They both share an awkward silence.

“Would Susan have woken up from that? I mean, yeah I guess what I did was stupid but…would it have worked?” Finn wonders. “I doubt it, I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible.”

“Be NICER..”

Fern sighs. “So, how’s your day been?” Finn hesitates. “I dunno, it was alright, I guess. “Same here.” He replies. Another awkward silence formed in between them. “Should I call Jake to pick us up?”

“Make him think you CARE!! Hang out with him!!”

Fern sighs again. “How about we go somewhere?” “Really? Where?” “Hmm, I think HW wanted to see you or something?” Finn’s face reddened a bit. “Ah, okay…Let’s go then!”

Later,

“HW????” Finn screams into her house.“Shush she’s probably tryna sleep!” Fern loudly whispers. Yet Finn talks loudly again. “Trust me, she doesn’t sleep during the day.” Fern looked around concerned. “Well then what if she’s busy right n-” “Hey guys.” HW pops up behind them. They both scream but then calm down. She sways her left hand and the branched door opens. “Heh, so you weren’t home!” Fern chuckles to himself and eyes Finn. “Do you two wanna come in or?” “Oh! Yeah sure!” Finn agrees and looks at Fern with a face that would read ‘did she really ask for me?’ They both walk in and sit on the floor by a river steaming through the house. HW sits across from them as she crosses her arm.

Intimidating…

“Why did you come? Do you need something? If you need food, there’s some in the pantry.” Finn looks at Fern. “Oh uh, Finn wanted to see you?” Fern lied. Finn’s face became a little flustered but still in disbelief. HW relaxed herself and stares at Finn for a moment before chuckling to herself. “I knew you were ‘totally in love with me’.” Finn looks away a little more flustered. “Hey that reminds me,” HW’s mind starts to wonder off. “People wanted to know to know what’s going on with you, Fern. You are nothing like Finn.” She reveals. “What?! How am I nothing like him?!” Fern questions angrily. “Well you are quiet, lazy, and anybody rarely seems to see you around.” HW explains. Finn chuckles. “Wah…WHAT???” Fern’s face displays visible anger while Finn breaks out laughing. Fern covers his face. “Fern! She’s just concerned!” Finn tries to comfort his doppelgänger while still snickering. Then, a loud bang noise is heard outside and HW goes put to check what was. Meanwhile, Finn is left to try and cheer up Fern. He lifts Fern’s head up and pushes it to where Fern is laying on the ground. He pats Fern’s forehead for a bit. “Do you feel better now?” He asks in a dollish yet comforting tone. “Yeah..” HW comes back in with a dead rabbit and a dead bird. “I think the bird thought my house was a normal tree. Is Fern better now?” She asks, tossing the carcasses into the pantry area. “Fern you okay?” She asks again as she sits next to Finn, crisscrossed. “Yeah, I’m good…” Fern looks away as he speaks. HW looks outside to see that it’s already getting dark. “I think I’ll be heading to bed now,” she looks over at the boys. “Use the sleeping bags if you need to.” She mentions. Fern sits up with a thumbs up in hand. HW then softly kisses Finn and walks off to her sleeping room. (Can’t call it a bedroom if there is literally no bed.) Finn puts a hand on where she kissed and blushed a bit as he turned to watch her leave. “Lovebirds, huh?” Fern asks with a grin. Finn turns back to Fern with an annoyed face. “It’s nothing serious.”
