"Oh, don't forget that I'm gonna be having to take my medical leave soon," Mackenzie said, glancing at James over her shoulder while she tied her hair up. "It's been about three months. I'm sure you're very ready to spend a week making me beg." She smirked lightly, turning back to the mirror and humming.
When she finished, she turned to him and smiled, sighing softly. "I love you. And I bet that's the fifth time you've heard that from me this morning, but I will continue to remind you as often as I can until you eventually get sick of me."

It was strange. Mackenzie wasn't sure why, but for some reason she was... more emotional than usual. She'd nearly cried over having to get up that morning. She shook her head, brushing it off. It was probably just stress getting to her.
She fidgeted a little as she walked, picking at her nails. Science bay was coming up. She could check in on James. Humming, she stepped into the room... feeling something she didn't quite like. Melinda was very close to him... Mackenzie shook her head a little, taking a deep breath, smiling. "Hey, baby."

For: @starbcrn-kids - Taken 3: Electric Jamboree
Muses: Mackenzie, Brynn, Nari, Lyssa Mitchell, Scott, Mara Kirk, Acyi Freddie, Melina
Just like most of the ship, Mackenzie was asleep. Just like Brynn, and Nari, and Mara, and Freddie, and Scott.
But Lyssa wasn't.
Maybe somehow, she knew. Maybe somehow, she'd been aware that something was going to happen.
Whatever it was... there was nothing that could've prepared her for the sudden pull she felt, the familiar flash of blue light... and the jail cells they all appeared in. Grayson, Kyla, Dahlia, Brynn, Mackenzie, that Alfonso kid-
All of them.
While most of them had been sleeping. Lyssa looked over at Grayson. He was awake. Had he been walking, too? She started over-
"GAHH-!" Lyssa jolted back, looking around again, finally noticing the cell barriers. Like the barrier in the brig. "Where the hell are we?! WAKE THE FUCK UP YOU IDIOTS!"

Aida huffed a little, but released him, popping up to her feet. She pointed to Brynn. "She's got it. They wouldn't let us have it, which is totally unfair, because we're very responsible."
"Aida, we get it, you're adorable," Brynn chuckled, rolling her eyes. "Come on. Let's get going, shall we?"
Mackenzie waved a little at everyone. "Hey, congratulations, you two," she said to Brody and Hawkins. "I mean it. And if you can somehow figure out a way to let us know when the time comes, please do."
"We'll see," Brody laughed.
Mackenzie went over to Brynn, giggling as the twins pulled James over. "It's been a real pleasure. Really hope everything works out for all of you." Brynn activated the beacon, and they were off almost instantly.
Nathan blinked, turning to Brody and Hawkins. "What... did she mean by that?"
Brody grinned, biting her lip. "I think I'll let your best friend tell you." She looked up at Hawkins and smiled.
unscrxpted:
“Aaaand we’re your kids!” Aida grinned, hugging him tightly.
Brynn waved, laughing. “Hey, Dad. Yeah, yeah, sixteen going on forty, and therefore the most mature. You’d think they’ve been practicing taking you down.”
“What?” Duke smirked, putting a hand up to his ear. “Sorry, didn’t quite catch that, the sonic boom from him hitting the ground busted my eardrums.”
“Oh, that’s exactly what I think,” James chuckles, smiling a bit at her, chuckling at the twins. “Girls, can I get up?”
Avery hugs him tighter as her answer. He sighs softly and chuckles. “It figures.”
Hawkins chuckles a bit at that and Audrey snorts and shakes her head a bit, smiling at Duke and Nathan. They’re okay. After everything, she’s still just glad to have them both back.
James sighs softly. “But seriously, we should probably get going. If we’ve got a beacon, it’s better just to get this mess out of everyone else’s hair. C’mon, girls, let me up.”
Avery whines a bit but finally releases him.

"You look so strong," Mackenzie giggled, biting her lip. "Gotta admit, humans are so sexy to me."
The ensign smirked, shrugging. "That's good to know. You know, I'm surprised a woman like you is single. Who could pass up a chance at you?"
Mackenzie just smiled. Oh, she hadn't said she was single. He'd only assumed. And she already knew she was in trouble, because she knew how James would feel about someone else looking at her, and she'd heard footsteps coming up behind her.

"Alara Kitan, Talla Keyali, Aoife Natal, Sylvia Malloy, Duke Crocker, Jocelyn, Fergus Tashtok, Audrey Dax-Rozhenko, Ginger Kirk…"
Mackenzie stood there in the otherwise empty corridor, back pressed against a wall, gripping her dog tags so tight her knuckles were white, voice broken and small and barely audible. She trembled, her eyes wide open but seeing nothing.
Nothing of the present, anyway.
"Move it, move it, move it!" The sergeant's voice boomed over the sound of M-562's straining. He stood over her, arms crossed.
M-562 gritted her teeth. "Moving, sir!"
"Not fast enough! Maybe you need a little incentive!" He stepped away to the other end of the room, grabbing a silver blade, bringing it back over and stabbing it straight into her arm.
Mackenzie breathed hard, tears in her eyes from not blinking for so long. "Lily Scott, Perry Janeway, Nova Kirk..."

Kenna paused, taking a small breath. "You're... well, interesting. Part brownie, part demon." She gently squeezed his arm. "You might have noticed that you really like to organize, and you really like cream for some unknown reason. That's the brownie part of you."
She smiled softly. "I don't know how the demon comes out in you, buddy. You were so little last time I saw you..." She sighed a bit. "But... maybe mischief?" She shook her head. "Look, Hunter... what you are doesn't make you who you are. That's something that you're going to have to remember while you process this. What you are and who you are are not the same thing."
"I'm a weapon of mass destruction," Mackenzie said, raising her hand. "An emotionless, heartless predator designed to be able to rip apart the enemy with my bare hands, that can only see threats and allies and nothing else. But I'm... not that. I'm Mackenzie, a security officer, a mother to a little girl that needs me. I'm that woman that cares too much about everyone, and it gets me into trouble. I have a family, and they're everything to me. But who I am isn't defined by me being a witch, or a werewolf, or a vampire. It's defined by what I choose to do with what I was made to be."
unscrxpted:
Kenna didn’t even blink. She just smiled softly at Hunter, putting her hand on his arm. “Hey… it’s okay. I promise. Your family? They care about you. So, so much. I mean, mine… My family didn’t know what I was for a long time. Because I can’t talk about it. It’s a limitation I have. I literally can’t say what I am. But when they did find out, because of Mackenzie? They still loved me.”
She tilted her head a bit, smiling at him. “And we’re not much different. You and I. So I’ll be here, every step of the way. I’m not that far, just the Orville. I will always, always be here for you. Always. I know it’s a lot, I know it’s hard to understand, but I will be by your side as long as you need, because I want to be here for you to help you with whatever you need.”
Hunter sniffles, his eyes clearing back as he listens to her, nodding, trying to calm down, trying to breathe. It doesn’t– it still doesn’t make sense, not really. He wasn’t…
He was just Hunter Wendell White, wasn’t he?
But no. No, he wasn’t, and he knew he wasn’t, not really. “So… so what am I, then?”

"What the hell do you mean she's not feeding? What's going on?" Mackenzie grumbled into her communicator. Grayson didn't respond. She sighed heavily, shaking her head. "Awesome. Wonderful. Brynn won't feed and Grayson won't even tell me why."
"Have fun," Audrey sing-songed, waving at her as she hurried off.
Mackenzie blurred to James' family quarters, rushing in the door when it opened. "Brynn? Grayson?" She looked around, frowning a little. "Where the hell...?"

Tayen took a sharp breath in as she looked around. "Dear God... This one's worse than the one we found Eretria in."
"I hate that I have to agree with that," Mackenzie said, looking around. She shook her head, keeping one hand on her phaser and a spell ready in the other.
Tayen shuddered, pulling out her tricorder and starting to scan the area. She sighed softly, then blinked, rescanning an area, looking up at what was left of a building. A school. "There's someone in there."
Looking at each other and nodding, Tayen and Mackenzie both ran for the school, grabbing rocks and throwing them as far from the building as they could so they could get inside.

"Mom!" Brynn pouted.

Brynn nodded, trying to shake it off. She cleared her throat. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm-I'm fine."
"No you're not," Mackenzie said as she walked in. She glanced up at James for a second. "How long?"
"It's not-"
"How. Long?" Mackenzie asked again, crossing her arms. "You can't lie to me, Brynn. I have a kid now, and she's almost as stubborn as you can be sometimes."
Brynn looked down. She shrugged. "I don't know. Two weeks?"
"Two-" Mackenzie sighed. "You can't do that forever. You're running on fumes."
"I know," Brynn said. She looked up at James, then quickly looked back down. "I just... don't want to."

Brynn smiled a little. Maybe Victoria wasn’t ask that bad. She nodded, stepping back from the machine. “Okay. Thank you.”
She stumbled a little, putting a hand to her head. She felt woozy. Weak. Hungry. How long had it been since she’d fed? A week? More? She shook her head. She could find someone later. Not now. Not in front of James.
Victoria nods and smiles at her, but grows worried when she sees the other stumble. James gently reaches up, hover a hand just over her back. “Whoa, whoa, you okay there?”
Mentally he’s already preparing to call sickbay and prep them for him to bring her straight back there.

James was her best source of information on what to do. Mackenzie knew he had more than enough experience with stubborn and troubled kids. She made her way through the corridors towards the science bay.
Completely losing herself in thought, she mulled over how she would ask for advice. Hey, I need your help with a pigheaded, angry, and emotionally closed off kid that I want to give a good home? She shook her head. Maybe she shouldn't be so blunt.
Mackenzie stopped, realizing that while she was thinking, she'd entirely walked past the science bay. She turned around and went back to the door. "James. Hey." She took a breath. "Uh... I need some help, and from what I've seen you're the most well equipped to give me the advice I need."

Solo Para: Persistence is Key
Muses: Mackenzie N'Livek-Kirk-McCoy-Chekov-Chapel-Verrin, S’Chn T’Gai Tayen, Eretria Guest Starring: Aoife Natal, Deema Capricole Word Count: 1396 Verse: Post-war
The team beamed down to the surface of the planet. Mackenzie looked around, taking a deep breath. “How far is this from that city James pulled Aida from?”
“Not very,” Deema said. She pulled out her tricorder, trying to scan the environment for any signs of life. She smacked the side of it. “Damn. My tricorder isn’t working. Looks like we have to do this the old-fashioned way.”
“Split up,” Tayen said, pointing different directions. “We’ll meet back up here if we find something.”
Deema and Mackenzie nodded, and the three went their separate ways.
“Hello?” Mackenzie called. “Is anyone alive? I’m with Starfleet. We’re here to help.” Nothing. She kept walking, peeking into the remains of buildings as she passed. “This is terrible… God, I hope we can get someone out of here.” She grabbed her communicator. “N’Livek-Kirk-McCoy-Ve- no. Nope. Mackenzie to Capricole. Anything for you?”
“Nothing yet,” Deema responded. “Tayen said she hasn’t found anything either.”
“Okay,” Mackenzie sighed. “I’ll keep you updated. Mackenzie out.”
The hybrid bent down to scoot into a partially collapsed building. “Hello? I’m here to help. I’m with Starfleet. Is there anyone here?” She walked further into the open space. “Well hello, that’s something.” She knelt down. Blankets, food dishes, and a makeshift fire pit were strewn around the room. It looked like someone had been living there, before or after the cave-in she couldn’t tell.
The sound of shuffling feet alerted Mackenzie to someone else’s presence. She stood, spinning on her heel to face the point of a sword.
“Who are you?” the girl wielding it asked.
Mackenzie slowly held up her hands. “My name is Mackenzie. I’m with Starfleet. Myself and two of my colleagues were sent down here to look for survivors.”
“Well you found her,” the girl said, narrowing her eyes when Mackenzie said who she was with.
“It’s just you?” Mackenzie said.
“Yeah. You got a problem with that?”
“Well, sort of, yeah.” Mackenzie sighed softly. “You’re alone. You’re barely sixteen.”
“It’s nothing new,” the girl grumbled.
Mackenzie pursed her lips. She slowly reached up and pushed the blade away. “Please, let us help you. My friend is a doctor.”
“I don’t need a doctor,” the girl snapped. “What I need is you out of my home and off of my planet.”
“I’m sorry but I can’t do that.” Mackenzie’s hand flew forward, reaching out to wrench the handle of the sword from the teenager. The girl jumped back, then kicked Mackenzie in the chest, knocking her to the ground. She brought up her sword and swung it down. Mackenzie squeaked, barely rolling out of the way in time.
Jumping to her feet, Mackenzie struck the girl in the face. Just once was enough, as the force of the punch knocked her out cold. Mackenzie shook her head. She grabbed her communicator. “N’Livek-Kirk-McKirk- absolutely not. Mackenzie to Orville. We’re gonna need a bed in sickbay.”
“Understood, standby. Just one?”
“Affirmative.” Mackenzie hoisted the girl over her shoulder. “Kir- Come on, on the first one? Mackenzie to Capricole. We’ve got a live one. She’s a fighter. Let’s meet back up.”
Tayen finished up her notes, glancing over at Mackenzie. She sighed and walked over to her. “Hey, she’s gonna be okay. We’ll find a place for her.”
“That’s not enough,” Mackenzie whispered. She stared at the biobed the handcuffed teenager slept on. “Tayen… You should’ve seen how she reacted when I told her I was Starfleet. She clearly doesn’t have a good relationship with officers.”
“Then we’ll find her a civilian family,” Tayen offered.
“No,” Mackenzie said. She shook her head. “No. She’ll just feel like we’re pawning her off on someone. She’ll run away. End up on the streets again. Alone.”
Tayen paused. She sat next to Mackenzie. “Then I think I know what you need to do.”
Mackenzie blinked, looking at her. “Me?”
“Yes, you.” Tayen nudged her. “Offer to take her in.”
Mackenzie blinked again. She looked back over at the girl. Take her in? Was Mackenzie prepared for that? She wasn’t sure… but this girl needed a home. She knew that. She was like that once. Alone, afraid, and in need of a place to be safe. And her favorite six people gave her that. She nodded.
“Okay.”
Tayen smiled and patted Mackenzie’s back. “I’ll be right back. I need to talk to Doctor Finn.” She got up, walking away.
Mackenzie took a deep breath. This girl would undoubtedly reject her. But she needed to be persistent. That’s what James taught her when Aida came aboard. Persistence was key.
The girl stirred awake. Mackenzie sat up, smiling softly. “Hey. Sorry about… you know… punching you.”
“You’re wicked strong,” the girl groaned, rubbing her face. She looked around. “Where am I?”
“You’re in the sickbay of the USS Orville,” Mackenzie said. “You had some minor injuries that needed to be treated, not to mention… you know…”
“You punching me?”
Mackenzie chuckled. “Yeah.”
“When can I go?”
“Not any time soon, I’m afraid,” Tayen said, walking back over. She smiled. “I’m Doctor Tayen. What’s your name?”
“None of your business.”
Tayen raised an eyebrow. She crossed her arms. “Young lady, I need your name. I can’t even think about releasing you until you answer my questions.”
The girl clenched her jaw. “Eretria.”
Tayen nodded, uncrossing her arms and recording it. “Thank you, Eretria. How old are you?”
“Sixteen. Ish,” Eretria said.
Tayen raised an eyebrow. She recorded the answer, taking a small breath. “How long have you been on your own?”
Eretria paused. “Most of my life. I was born on the streets. My mom died before I was old enough to really remember her.”
“I’m so sorry,” Mackenzie said.
“Everyone always is,” Eretria hissed.
Mackenzie stood, stepping over to the biobed. “Eretria, it’s not okay for you to be alone like that. You’re fending for yourself, stealing food, and living in abandoned buildings that could cave in on you at any given moment. You need somewhere safe to stay.”
“Yeah? And who’s gonna give me that? Starfleet?” Eretria scoffed. She tugged on the handcuffs. “Do I get to keep my new jewelry when I go to this magical safe place?”
Mackenzie winced. She cleared her throat. “I didn’t want to do that. Other security officers thought it would be for the best until you were treated. You’re a flight risk.”
“Not sure how you expect me to miraculously escape the ship, but sure.” Eretria leaned back, looking away from the lieutenant.
“Eretria,” Tayen said, “you’re very underweight, and malnourished. Is there anyone you know of that can take care of you?”
“Never has been,” Eretria said.
Tayen paused. “Until you’re healthier, I can’t release you-”
“What?!” Eretria yelled. She sat up, pulling on her cuffs. “No way! You and your stupid soldiers can’t keep me here!”
“Actually, we can, and right now we have to,” Tayen said firmly. “When your readings concern me less, then you can go. But until then, you’re staying right here. Get comfortable. I’ll be sending a nurse with food for you shortly.” The half Vulcan nodded once, tucked her PADD under her arm, and walked out of the room.
“You have to let me go eventually!” Eretria shouted after her. She fell back against the biobed and glared at Mackenzie.
The hybrid sighed. She wanted to help this girl. This lonely, scared, angry girl. She shook her head. “We’re going to help you.”
“I don’t need or want your help.”
Aoife stepped into sickbay, taking a sharp breath when she caught sight of the girl. She looked at Mackenzie and nodded toward Eretria. Mackenzie nodded.
“Isn’t it rude to telepathy about other people?” Eretria asked sarcastically.
Aoife smiled. “We’re not. We just know each other very well. Lieutenant, you should take a few minutes to yourself. Eat. Take a nap. You’re not a machine. You can’t run on fumes forever.”
“I really hate it when you’re right,” Mackenzie chuckled. She patted Aoife’s shoulder. “Thank you.” She looked to Eretria. “I’ll be back soon.”
“That’s what they all say,” Eretria mumbled, just barely loud enough for Mackenzie to hear.
Mackenzie stood there a long moment, then turned, heading out of sickbay. If anyone knew how to deal with stubborn teenagers who needed a home, it would be James. After all, he had Aida.

Mackenzie was really minding her own business. She was supposed to be keeping an eye on the activity level of the ship, and making sure everyone was in their correct place when they should be. But then she caught a scent. And it didn't smell much like most things on the ship. Metallic, yes, but... she couldn't quite name the rest of it.
Following the scent, she raced down the hall, finally coming around the corner to spot a girl bleeding blue. Mackenzie slid to the ground beside her. "Hey, how conscious are you?" She pressed her communicator while tearing a strip of fabric from her pants. "N'Livek-Kirk-McChekov- no, N'Livek-Kirk-McCoy-Chepel-" She stopped and closed her eyes, frustrated. "Mackenzie to Medical, I might need some help down here. Appears to be rather major bleeding from the right forearm, applying tourniquet now."
@changingthelegacy | Mackenzie
Tal took a shuddering breath, pressing herself back against the wall holding her right forearm tightly: too tight, inhumanly tight, but this was just one instance in a sea of them where she was actually lucky to have no nerve endings, no way to feel the pressure other than the gauge in her brain recording each Pascal she applied. The blue liquid had just stopped seeping out of the torn synthetic flesh, but the second she let go it was just going to start all over again.
With a muffled grunt Tal slammed her head against the steel wall behind her - IDIOT! - before sliding down to squat, not noticing the dent she’d put in the wall as her right hand groped through her pockets. Would it look suspicious if she took off her overshirt and used that as a tourniquet? Probably. That sounded like a one-way ticket to land her ass in med bay. Maybe if she just tore her pants, used that until she could get to her quarters, blame the tear on a snag in engineering…. The problem was really going to be creating a clean rip one-handed, since any more leakage might prove doubly as suspicious.
–Or at least that’s what the problem HAD BEEN right up until someone else rounded the corner.
