When Stars Collide (Jackson Wang x Reader) Part 1/2

Summary: Your girlband was disbanded but your dream of singing and dancing was too important to you to just give up after that. However, another company sees potential in you and signs you as their solo artist. One day, during recording your new song, a familiar face shows up.

Warnings: none, maybe a little bit of angst but totally fluffy especially at the end

That morning, you got up happily, finally you managed to sleep more than four hours now that the shooting of the new drama finished. You finally debuted as an actress however, you weren’t sure if that was a calling for you. The company made you audition for the role out of financial interests. Then you got a call from your manager telling you to go to the company for a meeting with the CEO.

It didn’t sound good with how your manager’s voice was nervous and shaking through the phone. Your girl-band, N3XUS debuted five years ago and you were the only one left who haven’t turned to acting and other options. You were always passionate about music and to be inspiration for others. You weren’t really appreciated in your group and the girls left you out from their group chat. When you arrived at the company, you spotted Lola, the only other foreigner girl in the band. She arrived from Japan and was spending most of her time there after debuting at her home as a solo artist. She was the only one who you were on friendly terms.

So when the CEO told everyone about his decision and slid the paper towards everyone which ended all of your contracts with the company, Lola was the only one who tried to comfort you a little bit before she had to catch her flight back to Japan. You weren’t really shocked to see the band reach an end. It was long due with how everyone only cared about themselves and their money. The other girls were only here for the shine and money while you assigned to be a trainee for the music. Dak-Ho, the manager pulled you to the side on the corridor after you left the meeting room, his expression showing how bad he felt for you to end up in this situation.

“(Name)… it will be hard but you were always more talented than any of the others” he sighed heavily. “So I decided to try at a few places and call a few people. Give a call to Ha-Neul, she’s a manager at XxxxxX Entertainment. I hope that she can help you in the future.”

With that, he said his goodbyes and left. You sighed and decided to return home, there was nothing much you could do at the moment. You stood in your kitchen, your phone on the counter and stared at it while gripping the edge of the counter top.

“You can do this…” you whispered to yourself. Your heart was beating so fast in your chest and chills ran down your spine. What should you say? ‘Hi, I’m (Name) from N3XUS and our company decided to fire us. Can I go over to your company and be your idol?’

“Arghhh!” you groaned and bumped your head against the counter. Your phone then started buzzing making you jump and shriek in surprise. Rolling your eyes at yourself you picked it up.

“(Name)? Are you there?” your mom spoke up making you jump again. You weren’t sure how you would tell her that you lost this time. She sacrificed so much just so you can chase after your dreams. It was especially hard after your dad died but she pushed on and earned the money to let you attend dance classes.

“Yeah, yeah…” you sighed. “How are you?”

“I’m okay but I really miss you” she replied making you smile. “When you can, please come home, sweetie.”

“I’ll try though I have this new project but I will try to take time off as soon as possible” you said with tears in your eyes. You couldn’t tell her. She deserved better from you, you needed to succeed after how much she gave up for you. You had to fight.

“Oh, sweetie, I understand but once you can come home I will make sure to make your favorite” your mom replied and you could hear the sadness in her voice. You made sure to tell her you loved her before you hung up and stared at your phone’s screen. Your lips pulled into a smile and your heart seemed to calm down as you tapped on the number of the manager Dak-Ho gave you.

Time skip ~

You sat on the corridor waiting for Ha-Neul with the news after your audition. You forgot how stressful an audition was but here you were trying all over again. You were used to your old company treating you badly, always choosing you only because they deemed your performance “okay” and because they had no one else who was good. Your heard the door open and close but you didn’t dare look up until Ha-Neul reached you.

“To be honest, the boss was quite surprised that you came here even if you already debuted a while ago” she sighed while she sat down next to you. She had a shoulder length cut hairstyle and a heart shaped face. Ha-Neul was about ten years older than you and had this kind mom vibe. “He was satisfied with your performance and would like to welcome you at the company as a solo artist…”

Your eyes widened in shock and a large grin broke out on your face splitting it in two. Then Ha-Neul put her hand up, her face staying serious as she looked you in the eyes.

“However, he has his conditions, (Name)… The company spent all the money on the newly debuted boyband and so we cannot afford to send you right away on stage. He said that he would have an easier job if you worked on a full album with your own songs so once you debut we can start selling your albums right away. You have about three months until everything will be arranged and you will be working with Sue.” Ha-Neul said calmly before she looked behind you and motioned for someone to come over to her.

“Hi, nice to meet you, I’m Sue, I will be your assistant” a girl around your age approached you with a shy smile on her face. You got up from your seat and grabbed her hand before bowing.

“Nice to meet you, Sue. I’m (Name).” you grinned at her. “Please take care of me.”

“I’ll let you talk things out” Ha-Neul smiled at you both before she left.

“I’ll show you around and introduce you to everyone, alright?” Sue spoke up again and you nodded before following her to the elevator.

However, the media quickly learnt about N3XUS’ end. You found yourself trying to avoid paparazzi while you tried your best to produce new songs. Fortunately, during your years as a member of N3XUS you quietly composed songs in the background and you had a lot to choose from. They needed adjustments and instrumentation but you were confident about them.

Sue was a fantastic help and she managed a lot of things on her own. Days passed by and you were still stuck with one last song you needed on the album. None of the songs you wrote and haven’t yet made their way on the album were good enough but you had only one week till your debut. You were singing the refrain in the recording room still thinking about what was missing but then you reached the part where you always got stuck and groaned disappointed.

“Why did you stop?” someone asked from behind the controls making you jump with a shriek.

After calming down, you looked up and tried to not blush seeing who the intruder was. Jackson Wang was looking back at you with a friendly smile while waving at you. He wore a yellow beanie and some comfy baggy T-shirt with sweatpants. You always had a crush on him and really hoped that you would meet him after you debuted with N3XUS. You quickly hurried out and greeted him.

“Nice to meet you too” he replied as he shook your hand, then he pointed at the microphone. “So? Why did you stop? It sounded great.”

“I… I think the song is missing something” you shrugged. “I just don’t really know what that is.”

“Can I see the lyrics?” Jackson asked pointing at the papers in your hand. You quickly gave it to him and pursed your lips in anticipation and nervousness. Jackson was a talented “veteran” in the field compared to you and his songs were all so good. To say you were shy was an understatement. You watched his handsome features for any indication of his opinions then Jackson’s lips pulled up into a half-smile and averted his gaze. “Please don’t stare at me like that.”

Your eyes widened at that but somehow your eyes were glued to his person. Was he being shy? What…? You forced yourself to look away from him by going to your bag and taking out your water bottle. Drinking some cool water helped you calm down a bit. When you turned back, Jackson was already sitting by the controls, pushing and pulling the small buttons as he started playing the song. Your song.

You watched him getting into the song, bobbing his head up and down and his left foot tapping the floor. Never in a million years would’ve you imagined to be in the same room as him. Then he started rapping right where you always got stuck and felt like there was missing something. Though Jackson got stuck too and leaned back in the chair while crossing his arms in front of his chest.

“A rap part would fit here quite well…” he mumbled then turned to you. “You know… I need a song on my new album and I was about to record something today but… it would be great to collab. What do you think?”

“That sounds great” you nodded with a bright smile. “Do you want me to leave the studio to you? I can come back later to finish my other two songs.”

“No, no, we could work on this one” Jackson jumped up abruptly his hands shooting out from his sides like he wanted to grab you so he could stop you from leaving. Then he quickly put his arms down with a sheepish smile and rubbed the back of his neck. “I was hoping that I could put your song on my album too if we collab… and maybe get something to eat later?”

You blinked surprised but nodded while chuckling. By the time you finished the song, you felt exhausted and wanted to sleep for the next two days. Getting to know each other better and making friends relieved the tension from you and maybe from Jackson too. You had no idea why he at certain moments seemed like he was shy around you. You remembered how big of a scandal it was a few years ago when his fiancée, the heiress of some large company cheated on him with an American rich guy who was the heir of some IT company. Jackson learnt about it from the magazines and the paparazzi who asked him about it. For months, he disappeared from any TV shows and only released music. You remembered how much in love he seemed to be back then.

You couldn’t understand why would someone cheat on this man, like he was almost perfect. He was funny and kind, had a large heart and cared about others around him much. Maybe that woman left him because she felt undeserving of him. You’ve heard about that feeling from other women and even some love songs were about that reason for cheating. You sipped on your green tea that was cooled by the many ice cubes you asked for at the little shop across the building. Jackson was an absolute gentleman, pulling out your seat for you and taking off your jacket for you when you arrived. The people in the shop seemed to be chill about Jackson’s presence which let you feel a little relieved.

“So, tell me something about you” you spoke up between two bites of your meal. He kept asking about you in the studio but he revealed little about himself. “I’m curious what the great Jackson Wang is doing after becoming world famous.”

You winked at him and laughed at his ‘deer-in-the-headlights’ look. He was a CEO at the age of twenty-eight it was pretty impressive, but he seemed like he didn’t care about it at all.

��That is a little bit exaggerated, I might have some international fans but K-pop and C-pop is not that known to people outside of Eastern Asia.” he shook his head after swallowing his bite. “Well… what do you want to know? Other than the fact that I’m fabulous and a great person.”

“And the humblest of them all” you poked his shoulder while laughing. It was a long time since you had something so laid back, something so nice like this. Ever since you entered the entertainment industry it felt lonely as hell. You hummed then. “Maybe tell me about your family. I saw an interview piece a long time ago where you were gushing about you mom. She must be really proud of you.”

“Yeah… she’s the best” he said with a fond expression on his face making you smile warmly at him. Jackson was easy to talk to and was really funny. You loved to listen to him talk and before you realized, it was quite late in the studio. So late that there was no bus you could catch to go home.

“Ah… How am I gonna get home?” you groaned when you looked up at the clock. “I’m afraid to call an Uber…”

“I can take you home” Jackson shrugged. “I have my car in the parking lot.”

“I wouldn’t want to impose” you shook your head to which he just rolled his eyes and grabbed your bag for you along with your hand pulling you towards the elevator. In the elevator, he kept holding your hand without realizing it and only let go when he took his car keys out of his pocket. His car was shiny and cool but wasn’t the most expensive one out there.

“I thought you owned the newest Porsche or Lamborgini…” you frowned confused once you were sitting inside making him laugh.

“Some people choose by the efficiency not by the look” Jackson replied. “Besides, I prefer this brand. Never let me down before.”

“It makes sense” you nodded. You quickly gave him your address and he pulled out of the parking lot. You leaned against the window and closed your eyes. His car smelled so good, clean and fresh… just like Jackson. Before you could really fall asleep, you arrived to your apartment complex. You yawned tiredly as you grabbed your bag meanwhile feeling Jackson’s eyes follow your every movement. Your hand was on the lock when you turned back and leaned over to him, kissing his cheek before whispering a ‘thank you’ to him. You left quietly and waved back from door with a bright smile.

Time skip ~

After your debut, the company wanted the two of you to make a videoclip from your collab. Quickly after that you were asked to perform it on stage in the new Idol Producer TV show. The two of you kept in touch through texts and funny Instagram posts which the internet quickly grew fond of and many people started shipping the two of you. The hype was big and when you appeared in the live stage of Idol Producer, people were screaming so loud you barely heard the music.

Then things quickly turned sour. Magazines released photos of Jackson hugging and cozying up with some Chinese actress in Shanghai. You had no idea how you should react or if you are supposed to react. Jackson had his life, he was a free man, he was free to date whoever he wanted to. Netizens though had a different idea. Many people turned against him and the actress, but Jackson was quickly forgiven by them a while later. Sue tried to make you watch the live stream he spoke about the issue but you refused to and kept on working hard.

Life a solo artist was everything you hoped for. You were free to do whatever music you wanted and the company only asked you to keep the dating down especially after the scandal you got dragged into. Jackson in the meantime kept messaging you even called you a few times but you never replied. You had to close him out of your life before you got dragged into the whole thing more. Your career was the first. Or at least that’s what you told yourself.

You felt stupid for hoping for something more. You never stood a chance against a shiny, super model looking actress like that Chinese woman.

do you have any tips for someone living in an abusive household?

Hi! I can share some advice with you, but please, remember that I'm only talking from personal experience and without knowing anything about yours, so my advice may not be what you personally need to hear. If anything I say doesn't feel right for you, please always trust yourself over me!

That being said, here are some tips for people living in an abusive household:

1. Remind yourself often that you're going through abuse and trauma.

When you're a victim of abuse, especially if the abusers are your parents (the people meant to love and care for you unconditionally), it's easy to feel like you're overreacting, like you're just attention-seeking, or like the only reason everything feels so wrong is because you're wrong inside. It's easy to feel like you're not deserving of love or compassion, or like you're guilty or deserving of your own abuse, because if you weren't it wouldn't be happening.

So try to remind yourself often that those thoughts are a consequence of parental abuse and a lack of a loving and safe environment to grow up in. Remind yourself that your parents aren't abusing you because you deserve it, but because they're selfish. Remind yourself that what you're going through is a very serious and traumatising experience that no one deserves to go through, and you're not overreacting or making things up for attention. Remind yourself that it's your family's responsibility since the moment they have you to take care of you physically, emotionally and financially until you can do it on your own, and not your responsibility to earn any of those things.

2. Following the above, try to practice self-compassion when they make you feel bad about yourself.

From things like reminding yourself none of this is your fault, to hugging yourself or putting on comfy clothes, to allowing yourself to cry, to hugging something soft and warm, to not being hard on yourself of you can't finish homework or do everything you wanted to do that day... You deserve compassion, and even though it's hard, treating yourself with kindness when you're able to can help alleviate some of the guilt and hatred toward yourself the abuse might be making you feel.

3. Don't try to confront your abusers about the abuse.

There are some abusers out there who will make it clear they very purposefully want to hurt you, but the truth is that many others, if not most of them, will go out of their way to rationalise and justify their abusive behaviour to the point the victim will believe that the abusers genuinely don't know they're doing something wrong, and that if they knew, they'd stop doing it. (This was my case! To this day, I still don't know if my mother was aware she was hurting me, because she had an explanation for every abusive thing she did and seemed to genuinely believe her explanations were valid and cancelled out my needs and feelings). And when abusers are so convinced they're right, it's very likely they will convince you, too, that you having boundaries or needs is unfair to them. And the voice in your head telling you something unfair is happening, and that you don't deserve this, will get smaller and smaller.

If this is your case, I would strongly advice against trying to have a heart-to-heart with them. They might only be abusing you because they have a very skewed vision of reality where they're always the victim of everything that inconveniences them, but the chances of that vision changing when you try to tell them they're hurting you are... slim to none.

In all cases I know of where people have tried to open up to their abusers about the abuse, abusers have reacted by "dismantling" every single rational (and, as I said, very likely already weak) argument their victims had for feeling hurt, basically taking that weak voice in their heads that knows they're hurting and shutting it down further.

Some of their ways of dismantling the victims' claims are:

Denying ever doing or saying the things you know they did or said to you (gaslighting)

Giving you an explanation, in a completely reasonable and rational tone, as to why everything they've done to you is your fault or otherwise completely justified

Painting themselves as the victims, acting like you're being unfair to them by not having moved past what they did to you already

All of the examples above are instances of emotional abuse, and they might cause a lot of damage if your inner voice isn't strong enough to fight them, further traumatising you by convincing you that they're right and you're wrong.

So, please, unless strictly necessary, don't give them access to that voice of yours. Don't let them weaken it further.

4. Remind yourself that your ways of coping are not your fault.

We can all agree that many coping mechanisms are unhealthy and even dangerous, and are important to overcome once you're out of the abusive situation. And if it's at all possible for you to take safety measures while coping, please do so. But know that it's not your fault if you need to resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms while you endure and survive the abuse. It's the fault of the people abusing you.

Some coping mechanisms may include:

Dissociation. For me, for example, this meant I was often completely unable to hear what my abuser was telling me, even if I knew she was saying something important, because my brain was shutting down her voice to protect me.

Self-harm. Not limited to cutting: bruising, pinching or scratching yourself, and punishing yourself without food/sleep/basic needs, are also forms of self-harm.

Avoiding things that cause you anxiety. From your kitchen, because your abusers don't want to see you there or always scream at you when you're there, to a school deadline, because everything is too much and you don't have the emotional range to deal with it right now, to putting on certain clothes, because you know your abusers will have something to say about them, you might find yourself avoiding anything your brain has associated with abuse.

Hiding in your room, spending as little time as possible at home, sneaking around/doing everything behind your abuser’s back, or lashing out/being rude/being physically or verbally violent toward your abuser, even when they’re acting normal. Remember that even when they’re not abusing you in that moment, your brain still sees them as a threat. It’s completely normal to feel threatened by their presence around you and to want to run to your room as soon as they’re nearby or snap at them as soon as they ask you about your day.

If you find yourself doing any of these things: please, know that none of these are decisions you're making with a clear, healthy mind. These are things brains (and not just human ones!) do when they are in survival mode or the distress they are going through is bigger than they can process. In the case of self-harm, my therapist explained to me that many animals scratch themselves against sharp surfaces when they're going through great emotional pain, because causing themselves physical pain can help them feel some sort of control over the pain they're experiencing.

So if you're doing any of these things, please remember the second point in this list and try to practice self-compassion: when your head starts to tell you it's your fault you're hurting yourself, avoiding situations that might cause you to get abused, or constantly zoning out to distance yourself from the trauma you're going through, try to think of yourself as a very distressed puppy whose brain is just trying to survive in any way it can. Try to treat yourself with as much compassion and understanding as you would that puppy.

5. Hold on to anything you can. Literally anything.

Abuse feels endless while you experience it (especially if you're a teen and still don't have any experiences with adult life), and often, the mere idea of ever having a life outside of the abuse can feel unachievable and impossible to even fathom. This is completely normal, but it often leads to suicidal thoughts if you begin to believe that death is the only way out the abusive situation and that all there is for you to experience for as long as you stay alive is the overwhelming pain or trauma.

If this happens, please don't be ashamed to stay alive for whatever reason you can find. For a long time, I held on to a book saga that wasn't finished and I wanted to know the ending of. Then it was my younger cousins. Then it was a videogame. And now I'm still here. So if everything keeping you alive is a book, a show, a pet, or wanting to outlive someone you can't stand out of sheer spite, please try as hard as you can to hold on to that. Even if you're at a place right now where the idea of eventually moving out of that house is so unrealistic it's distressing to even think about. Just making it until tomorrow is more than enough for now.

Veteran NRx blogger AntiDem has been beating the drum for his message of escaping the cities while we still can on Gab (basically a right-wing Twitter clone). A small sample:

Stop comparing getting "canceled" by the Twitter mob to the gulag, you fags.

You have a way out. People in the gulag didn't.

Leave the big cities. Move to a small town in a red state. Work a blue collar job or open your own business. Now the Twitter mob has no power over you.

If you don't want to do that because you want a cushy, well-paid office job more than you want freedom, then I have no sympathy for you.

Blue collar bosses don't give a shit about the Twitter mob. If some SJW from Portland calls Gary's Auto Body in Guthrie, Oklahoma to tell them they've got a racist working for them, they'll get told to fuck off and hung up on.

Work for Gary, and you're safe.

Look, I'm not a huge fan of Atlas Shrugged, but there were a few points in it that were really good. One involved Hugh Akston, who works as a cook at a diner, but used to be a university professor before he got canceled for wrongthink. He works his blue collar job because he can't be canceled from it, and still gives out wisdom to those who ask. Unless you're willing to do the same, and insist on staying married to your cubicle job, you're a LARPer.

And so, dear reader, I challenge you: It is time for you – for us all – to do something. Perhaps you can save the world. If so, I hope you do. But if you can just save the people around you by becoming a contributing member of a sane, stable, shock-resistant, and sustainable community, then you will have done a great service. Here is where I believe you should start.

The first thing you should do is to get out of the big cities, which history shows us are deathtraps in times of disruption. Here, a lot of ignoring of fools will be necessary on your part. First, you’ll have to ignore the leftist press and academia, which is already trying to gaslight the public into thinking that the coronavirus pandemic is a particular problem of the rural south instead of the big coastal cities like New York, a bit of ludicrous wishful thinking that a moment’s glance at actual data disproves. First and perhaps most obvious is the fact that in the United States (as opposed to Cold War-era communist states), the countryside is armed to the teeth and the cities are not. The late 20th and early 21st centuries provide no lack of examples of what happens when a traditional 2nd Generation army sets itself up in a nation’s big cities and tries to impose its rule on an armed and hostile countryside; as you are not fools, I need not tell you what the results of that have been. Second is the fact that the big cities are run by elites who hate you and want you dead, so turning to them for protection is plain suicide. Perhaps in a different era – say, in the East Germany of 1967 – you could have survived by keeping your head low and pretending to go along with the official ruling ideology. But we do not live in that age anymore – your skin is your uniform, and when trouble comes to the diverse big cities you will be targeted mercilessly for wearing it...

There’s a reason why smart elites in functional societies (as opposed to what we have now) have always kept country estates they could retreat to when chaos and disruption reared their heads. Heed their wisdom.

If any of you think I’m directing scorn at the mainstream media for their counterfactual attempts to convince people that the cities are safer than the countryside, I say: on the contrary, I welcome it. The more fools there are who stay in the cities believing that they’ll be protected from the effects of disruption, the better things will be for the non-fools who know better. When trouble comes, we’ll have enough of our own to care for without being saddled with saving big-city fools from the entirely predictable consequences of their own poor decisions. Let them stay where they are. And while I’m giving out counterintuitive thanks, I’d like to offer some to all of the Social Justice Warriors who have worked tirelessly to throw the Dissident Right off of social media, to get them fired from their urban cubicle jobs, and to render them unemployable anywhere except in the rural sections of deep red states. I know that for those who fear being “hurled into the void”, as the Zman puts it, this seems like the worst fate imaginable. But nothing could be further from the truth. What we on the Dissident Right need to do now more than anything else is to disconnect from the corporate and consumerist, to stop spending too much time on the internet, to get out of the diverse, polluted, crime-ridden, disease-prone, and degenerate big cities, and to start making things real in genuine communities full of people like us.

I moved out of the big cities a couple of years ago, and I can tell you from firsthand experience: It’s pretty comfy out here in the void. So come home, white man. Get out of the cities as soon as you can. Take a massive pay cut if you have to. Change careers if you have to. Stock shelves on the night shift at Walmart if you have to. But get yourselves and the people you love out of the cities before it’s too late – if it isn’t already.

(Yes, I understand the desire to stay in the cities. I lived in Silicon Valley for 25 years. I loved it dearly, and I desperately miss the old Valley of the 90s and 00s. But that world is gone, and it’s never coming back; we tread that path but once. And if nothing else, I can’t imagine trying to get through this crisis in my tiny old city apartment instead of my cottage with its yard out back and a hayfield out front.)

Which is all well and good, but I think he has forgotten one thing, and it is the most important thing of all: women.

Women are hypgermous; they marry up, not down. And no woman is going to marry a man who stocks shelves at Walmart on the night shift. Even if you can get a decent blue-collar job at Gary's, she is just going to divorce you eventually, as Nabil ad Dajjal explains:

I don’t know much about factory work but my dad was an HVAC mechanic for most of his working life and as much as I respect him I wouldn’t ever consider doing the same.

Skilled tradesmen like plumbers, carpenters, electricians, HVAC, etc can make solid money even without advanced degrees. In theory, you could support a family on that income. In practice, all that money you earn will go straight to alimony and child support since even a woman who dropped out of college herself will look down on you for doing manual labor and eventually divorce you. A college degree and an office job might pay less but it’s less embarrassing for your wife to tell to her girlfriends and in our family court system that counts for a lot.

Assuming that you can find a loyal wife, there’s another problem in the form of career advancement or the lack thereof. It doesn’t seem like there’s much room to climb the ladder: you can gain seniority within your job but it doesn’t seem like many tradesmen make it into management.

And:

Nobody has told you that, at least not that I’ve seen.

Blue collar guys get laid and most of them get married too. The difficult part for them is in staying married. Obviously divorce isn’t a certainty but you’re taking a substantially increased risk.

Money without social cachet isn’t much of a defense, as between alimony and child support most of that money would go to the ex-wife anyway along with the primary residence and car. Every marriage has ups and downs but with no fault divorce those downs can easily end up destroying your family and wiping you out financially. When accounted for properly, that’s a pretty substantial cost.

Now, AntiDem has pretty much gone full MGTOW after a series of disastrous experiences with women, so I guess he doesn't mind. And, believe me, I totally understand where he's coming from (especially with this, which is exactly what happened to me). But as long as there is a filial duty to reproduce in order to repay the debt to one's ancestors and carry on one's family name and bloodline, as well as a biological imperative to pass on one's genes and avoid becoming an evolutionary failure, on top of the cultural argument for having children ("the future belongs to those that show up"), we have a problem.

2019 Annual Review

Each year, I look back at the previous year’s annual review and note that things didn’t go as planned. For some reason I am always surprised, but this time it’s a little painful, too. From 2018′s Annual Review:

“2019 outlook? Sunny! I hope it will be my best year yet.“

Oh, Vael. You built your house, you moved to the promised land. But your year did not go as planned. You are not even close to the zen you craved.

It has been a wild year. This will run long. All I can do is stick to the format and hope my memory and average writing skill will do the year justice. So, as usual, we start with the positive.

What went well this year?

We like our house. We do. The builder was no good, resulting in some warped walls and a lot of headache getting them to finish everything properly, but the layout is very suitable for us. My office is exactly what I needed, our TV room has just the right space for us. We finally have a respectable kitchen. Since I’m living and working in the house 24 hours a day, it’s important to have a comfortable space.

Game development. For the past five years, I’ve put in some serious work. A lot of it was within my game engine, GAM3, and tinydark’s gaming network, The Orbium. While I put in a lot of work, not much came in the way of actual games produced. I finally rallied in 2018 and put out Bean Grower. It was designed to be a supplemental game, not a main driver, so it will not bring in sustainable income. I went on to think that I should open GAM3 up to other developers, license the engine out and collect a share of what they make.

I resolved to refactor GAM3: a word which means to rewrite and modernize many parts of it so that it’s easier to work in, and for it to present better. I would come to realize this desire to share GAM3 was due to a lack of confidence in myself to produce something great, and financially sustainable. Around the time I was realizing that multiplayer was the answer, I discovered Marosia.

Then we moved, I took on contract work, and things generally slowed for me for a few months, eking out what development I could. I played Marosia throughout and in August, it died. I wrote a teardown for it. The stars had aligned: though I had a lot of prelim work to be done, I would make a successor to Marosia. I managed to hype a few people in the community with a demo of GAM3 and I spent the next few months coding a chat prototype and generally organizing myself, and finally mid-November began the refactoring. It would end there, but just this morning (seriously) we learned Marosia was coming back. I had a momentary freakout but it’s ultimately a good thing for my own game.

I haven’t been more excited for a project in a long time. I never thought I’d be so excited to create a standard fantasy world, but it’s a ton of fun, with intricacies I never considered. The game’s design lends itself to a sustainable monetization model: I’m thinking $3/mo for quality-of-life upgrades, with a discount for buying in bulk. I would have paid double for Marosia, so I think this is fair. (6 months of die2nite is currently priced at $69, 6 months of Hattrick is $90!) And most important of all, I can do it ethically, with a game that truly means something to people.

Web development. I’ve learned quite a bit this year! I am so grateful for svelte. I liked but never loved React.js. It always felt ponderous to me. I have no doubt The Orbium’s refactoring would have taken me half the time it did if I were learning svelte vs. React, simply because React is so much more convoluted than svelte, and all in the name of uglier syntax. Svelte seamlessly integrates style and functionality into UI components, which means that if I’m working with a button that clicks to open a modal, everything I need for that button is in that one file.

Due to my contract work (with Harley Davidson, I can reveal) I also got some experience with Symfony and other modern development practices in PHP. PHP doesn’t really excite me these days, loathing having to produce views with it, but it is at least comfy.

My job. “Yeah, yeah.” I got a raise, most of which was contributed to getting Eve and my son onto my badass healthcare plan. We’re developing like it’s 2012, which is frustrating and makes even simple tasks take forever, but I can’t complain about the pay nor the stability of the company and my position there. I also work mostly remotely.

What didn’t go so well?

2019 was dominated by the bad. Eve’s not putting out an Annual Review, but our pain is shared.

The move. 11 months after the contract was signed, our builder was finally ready to let us move in. The house was not finished, just livable. So we rushed out of Rhode Island. We packed my car with everything we could fit, even removing the spare tire, but we got almost all of it. Me, Eve, our son, and our two cats.

At around 7:30 PM, we were driving on a dark highway when we were struck by a muffler that had fallen out from the truck in front of us. It destroyed the front-end, spilling radiator fluid onto the road. I had no idea what was going on, but it so happened that a mechanic had broken down right near us and was able to help. The engine barely carried us to the nearest motel, and I was in shock. I carried all our stuff to our second-floor room, it was even lightly raining. And I was defeated. Eve reports she had never seen me so bad. I had no idea how long we’d be in this ghetto-ass motel, what it would cost us during this time of great financial need, and mostly: I was just miserable. We could have died. If it had hit one of our tires, we could have spun out at 70+ MPH. All I wanted to do was get to our house the next day, and here we were.

I won’t detail the rest here, but I do want to thank my friends for their support and appreciate the good fortune that we got through this time.

We got to the house at 11PM on a Sunday; I still appreciate our builder taking the time to show us around so late. And... it was not at all what we were expecting. We had no driveway, and it had rained. We were tracking in some mud but that didn’t even matter because the entire house had to be cleaned. There was dirt all over the floors, they’d forgotten I didn’t want a chandelier over the dining room table, and the feeling was that we’d gone through Hell (and austure financial practices) to get here and this was it. So much wasn’t done. We knew that, but we didn’t think we’d be sweeping and wetting the floor with paper towel just to have a place to put our stuff. Shoutout to my friend Cody for setting us up with a supply drop.

We spent a lot of time buying furniture, aided by our rental SUV, all the while worrying about our newly purchased things sitting around the house without our protection as workers came in and out. I had to go back to Virginia to pick up the car and through exhaustion, caffeine, stupidity, and anxiety, managed to go 88 MPH and get myself a ticket: a misdemeanor, even. I spent the entire day picking up that damn car (5 hours up and down) and returned home in the worse state I’d ever felt. I was emotionally, mentally, and physically depleted.

But there was no stopping for me: I took on contract work and I had to get it done just to stay afloat. And then we got a fucking dog.

The dog. At some point in 2018 we determined that our son could use a companion and that a dog really completes the family. Leading up to the move, we put a down payment on a rough collie: the “Lassie” breed. They usually run around $800 and we got her for $500. I was a fan of the breed and Eve had done research that proves it’s a great breed. (it is) Even after the accident, we thought we should pay the rest for her and bring some joy into our life.

We named her Esme, and getting a dog was definitely one of the worst macro decisions I’ve made for the family yet. I couldn’t last more than a month with her. It was my decision to get rid of her, which made my wife and son sad but we were getting so little out of the experience. The cats beat her up, she was afraid of everything, and all she wanted to do was run around but we kept her cooped up in the house because we had no fence. I hated that there was still a dog smell, and I hated that it farted during Game of Thrones. It was over when we went grocery shopping and came back to a poop-filled crate, which the circumstances of the night dictated I must clean.

Young Living. Eve was supposed to sell essential oils for some side money. We knew it wasn’t going to be big money, unless she got lucky or turned out to be a natural-born saleswoman, but it was something to do and we believe in the products. I really trust in Young Living and I personally have seen the benefits of their oils and products.

So she went to the YL convention in Utah to learn to sell and, hey, have some fun. She returned feeling even less confident: they’d changed some numbers, and the truth that we always knew was that the market’s highly saturated. There are memes trivializing the effects of oils and there’s no denying the company’s an MLM. A lot of the big earners made their sales early on. Coinciding with the bad feels of Autumn, we decided to put the oil dream aside and focus on mental and physical health.

Eve mental/physical health. The muffler changed a lot for us. It morphed what should have been a very happy time in our lives into a very stressful one. Eve felt fatigued and broken down, and I wasn’t much better off. One day before her planned back-to-action, pick ourselves up and get ready to enjoy Summer, she sprained and tore a ligament in her ankle while coming down the stairs. We hoped it was just a sprain and did everything we could to avoid going to the doctor, but a week later she hadn’t gotten better and so began the PT and bullshit regimen. Our plans of hiking the blue ridge mountains were crushed.

But she recovered, and I shit you not, the very day before she planned to return to action, it was Father’s Day. She was making me my special breakfast and was using a hand-blender to blend pumpkin french toast mix when she went to clean some gunk out of the blender with her finger. It was a split-second decision to help make breakfast faster. Her finger twitched, caught the irresponsibly sensitive power button and tore her finger up. Immediately took her to Urgent Care and then the Emergency Room. $3,000 and some luck later, she kept her finger, but has permanently lost some feeling in it.

That was a bad time for us. I was overworked, she was miserable, and yet she still managed to get to Utah to learn how to sell. To salvage our year. In Autumn, all the anxiety, stress, and the damage from her upbringing finally culminated and she broke.

Her physical health tanked in tandem with her mental. She suffered frequent menstrual issues and her EDS (a joint disorder) flaring up. It is hard to detail all the pain and frustration, and it really is beyond the scope of what needs to be said. My wife is depressed, prone to feeling overwhelmed, and I’m happy to say that we are getting her professional help soon.

What’s remarkable is that I can’t recall a period of time that she didn’t try her best to recover. Every month, most weeks, she would constantly express that the next day or month was her time. She’s done it for this month and 2020 as well. And I don’t think she’s lazy or unmotivated. She is just defeated and I am a poor comforter. Honestly, I am just shit at helping people if the solution isn’t “well just force yourself to do the thing.” That’s how I get through my problems and it doesn’t work for everyone, not even always myself. Still she is strong. I think writing this out has helped me remember that.

Relationship with my son. I had hoped my increased efficiency and happiness would improve our relationship. I planned for more structure: things like “once we’re upstairs for bedtime rituals, no going back down.” Each night I make a point to spend a minimum of 30 focused minutes with him. But I have only succeeded in making our relationship worse. I don’t think he needs professional help, but there is something within him, from when he was three years old, that just prevents him from being a hard worker. Respect is important to me and I don’t respect him. He is a frustrated child, often not understanding the world, often forgetting things he was supposed to do. I’m not doing a good job of helping.

I think I could have done better, but there were simply too many fronts to fight.

Mental performance. I haven’t gotten any better from last year. I am still not as sharp as 2017-Vael. It is a matter of stress and lifestyle.

What did I learn?

How to be a homeowner! Generally how to manage a home. I got my tools, all cute with my little leaf blower.

SLOWWWW DOWWWWN. The outside of the house needs some work. We need to extend our driveway, clear an acre, and put up a fence. I could take a loan out to do this and be fine, but I could also just slow down. Take a deep breath. Enjoy what we have for the Summer. It sucks I won’t be able to use that acre for farming, but I think I have a good place to plant a single apple tree this year. And hey, less mowing.

A shit ton of web development.

Probably became more cynical. But I think The Good Place has helped remind me to be a good person.

To just accept Eve needs help. And that I really suck at helping her.

Future Outlook

All that bad stuff that happened? Pfft. Shitty year. 2020′s here, it’s a brand new decade. I’ve got a cool game I want to make, we’re gonna get Eve some help, and...

Get pregnant! Yeah! Right now we definitely aren’t ready for kids. We need to use our new health insurance to make a bunch of appointments, recover financially, mentally, physically. But we very badly want more children. I feel it all the time. I have begun to suspect that genetics do matter, and I wonder if Abel’s laziness mirrors his biological father’s laziness. My dad loved to work and I do too. It might be possible to pass these traits on.

Better office. I need to get some furniture and improve my work environment.

Vacation! We desperately need a vacation. We’re going to Disney this year, either May or June.

Zen Vael. I will attempt to be “the person I want to be” as detailed last year. My soft goal for this is March 15th, as I set last year. I will undoubtedly fail that date. There is no way I’m wrangling my sleep and attitude in the next two months, but surely by the end of the year?

“You guys have kept in contact this whole time?” Bill asked, brow disappearing underneath hair line as he looked like his old friends in amazement. “And you guys are.. what? Room mates?”

Eddie avoided looking at Richie as he answered. “Yeah, uh… room mates. Something like that.”

[or: the adult!losers reunion, done 2000s sit-com style, just like we all deserve.]

PREVIOUSLY ON SEMI CHARMED LIFE: “ At the start of next week, Richie would be switching over to the late show at his radio station. It was going to mean many more late nights, working until 2 or 3 in the morning depending. | “Why are you sitting on the side of the road?”“I’m considering quitting my job and moving here,” Ben said, only half joking. “But it’s not very comfortable.” | You made it through a day with Spencer Pearsons, which is more than can be said about the mass majority of new hires. So what’s it’s going to be? Are you going to sink… or are you going to swim?” “They’re right,” Stan interrupted. “You’ll either get the hang of it or quit. So, Mike Hanlon, I guess you gotta chose. Are you going to at least try to stick it out or are you going to go back to Derry with your tail between your legs?” | We’re going to have to change things. You know I love your writing, Bill, but hopes and dreams won’t pay for a baby.”

Goooddd evening New York! According to my time, we’re settling into a deep dark night here in our great city of large apples. So, my dear listeners, I know why I’m here, awake, at midnight on a Wednesday? It’s my job to be awake and annoying at midnight- so what’s your excuse?

Stanley Uris reached out and clicked off his desktop radio. Dead silence in the middle of the night was better than being tormented by Richie Tozier’s voice all night. Sighing, Stan marvelled once again at how there was no reason for their branch to be open this late at night. In what world would a person be needed financial advice in the dead of the night?

Proving once again that Stanley Uris didn’t seem to know anything, there was a knock at his office door. Startled, Stan looked up at the pretty dark haired girl who seemed as surprised to find herself standing there as Stanley was to see her. “Hi…” she said slowly. “I was told you might be a good person to help me.”

“That might an matter of opinion,” Stan said back with a soft, tired smile. “Most people seem to mis-understand what it is I do.”

“I just wanted to talk to somebody who understands money,” she said lightly. “Because I don’t. At all. I never had to…” The woman came into the room and sat down in the comfy chairs. This office was one of the nicer ones in the branch, Stanley was only allowed to use when he was working the night shift. More often than not, he was stuck in one of the overflow rooms and spent the day playing Solitaire on the computer. Which, yeah, was also what he did when on the night shift but… at least he got to sit in the nice office and do it.

The woman rubbed her hands together awkwardly, giving a forced smile. “But now I… I’m pregnant and I guess I could just go to my dad’s accountant and bankers- they took care of my money my whole life, but…” She pressed her hands over her stomach. “This is the start of my own life, you know? I should do this myself.”

Stan nodded. “There’s nothing wrong with keeping the same accountant and bank as your parents, you should know. You don’t have to do it completely alone, but we can look at some of your options.”

“I just…” the woman shrugged. “My boyfriend… the father… I’m not sure if he’s the smartest. He’s an amazing boyfriend, I love him so much. But I’m sure if I can rely on him, when it comes to money. I have some stuff from my father, inheritance and whatnot. I guess I’m just wondering if it’s a good idea to maybe have my own bank account, and keep it separate from him.”

“It’s always a good idea to have your own account,” Stan said, nodding. “Especially considering you’re not even married. You’re not obligated to share anything with your boyfriend, no matter how pregnant you are. If you’re looking to open up an account, then you’ll need to go into your bank during operating hours. At least to make an appointment, we don’t do that kind of stuff here. We can advise, of course, but I do believe that having your own account is a very good idea if you don’t already.”

The woman nodded. “I’d like to come back and talk to you. You’re pretty much the first person who hasn’t told me to just marry my boyfriend because I’m pregnant.”

Stan smiled blandly at her. “How about this? I’ll take down your name and put you into our system as a taxes client? Then you can come back and request to talk to me whenever you’re struggling with your financial decisions? Can I have your name?”

The woman nodded excitedly. “Yeah, yes! That’s perfect. It’s Audra Philips.”

As night falls over this not-so-great city, you really do have to wonder. What am I doing awake when I could be asleep? I know I am, even for 12 hours an hour, wondering why I’m not just at home, instead of sitting awake in a 4 by 4 booth, more likely than anything talking to myself. Because really- unless something has gone terribly wrong in your life, you’re asleep at quarter to one in the morning.

“Man,” Kay laughed as she walked into the staff room. Mike Hanlon was seated on the floor, surrounded by half finished plans for the new Ancient Greece exhibit, with Richie’s voice filling his ears. “That guy doesn’t hold back, does he?”

“It’s not exactly in his fashion, no.” Mike chuckled. “Richie has always been that way.”

“Richie? As in, Kaspbrak?” Kay asked, looking at the radio as though it had personally offended her. Mike blinked up at her, mouth opening slightly. “His husband’s a dick. They got a cute kid, though.”

Mike simply blinked at her. There was a lot to unpack there- possibly Kay thinking Eddie was an asshole being the oddest part of what she’d just said- and Mike knew he didn’t have the time or willpower to do it just now. “I… Pearsons told me that I’m not allowed to leave until I figure out the how to run the new Greek exhibit”.

Kay raised her eyebrows. “Spence is letting you take lead on the Greek exhibit? He must really like you.”

“Like me?” Mike burst out laughing. “I’m half convinced he’s trying to work me to death.”

Kay shook her head, sitting down crossed legged in front of him. “No, Spencer has literally never willing given up the lead on anything ever,” Kay took several of the printed pages and pulled them towards her. “If he gave you this exhibit in particular, he really fucking likes you. Ancient Greece is Spencer Pearsons’ passion.”

Mike groaned. “You’re just making me more nervous that I’m going to fuck this up.” Mike shook his head. “I have a million ideas and each one is probably worse than the others.”

“You have too many ideas,” Kay said with a soft laugh. “Why are you making it so complicated? It’s easy. If you want to impress Spence, make it simple. Give the information, give an easy layout and get rid of the extravagant bullshit. It doesn’t need to be fancy, it needs to be factual.”

Mike huffed out an annoyed breath, and clicked Richie off.

Nearing on 2 am, I’m still here. You’re still here too, if you were ever here at all. I could probably say anything right now, nobody would be any wiser. The earth is flat, all cats are aliens, men in suits make me nervous… whos’ even listening?

Ben Hanscom chuckled as the radio stopped as he turned off his rental car. He opened the door and walked out, looking at the three story houses at the edge and shaking his head. They all looked the same, of course, as the style grew throughout the world. He tucked his hands into the back pocket of his jeans and walked over to the fenced in area. Beverly Marsh was leaning up against the door, and Ben’s heart raced in his chest in a way it hadn’t since he was a teenager sneaking out.

“Ben Handsome,” Beverly called happily as she moved towards him, becoming more and more visible through the dark air. “And here I thought you’d lost my contact.”

Ben smiled to himself, remembering throwing her email into the trash… and remembering stumbling into his apartment drunk after hanging out with Bill and finding it stuck to the bottom of his shoe when he woke up in the morning. “I was just picking the right time to reach out.”

Beverly hummed. “We always have had the worst timing, haven’t we?”

Ben nodded in her direction and walked into the fancy living area. Beverly was looking at the houses with an air of familiarity that he felt in his bones. “You’ve been here before?”

“Yeah, Tom and I looked into this houses when they started going up,” Beverly said. “But we figured out pretty quickly that there was no way we could afford to live in them.”

“No average person could afford to live in them,” Ben said wisely. “That was the point. I should know- I designed them.”

Beverly slowed to a stop and looked at Ben with wide eyes. “You… I thought you said you were just an intern?”

Ben pursed his lips. “I am. One of my first tasks was to come up with a design for some high end townhouses. Next big meeting, my higher up was displaying my design and taking full credit. Told me to suck it up, and that I’d understand when I got higher up that the idea of the many was the idea of the one. I’m still not sure what that means besides fuck you.”

Beverly took to look at the houses. “They… they are beautiful.”

“They’re…” Ben exhaled hard. “Yeah. But all I want to do is burn them down. You know?”

“Destroying things won’t make you feel better,” Beverly said. “Trust me. I destroyed my whole marriage then walked out of it without a word. And I don’t feel even close to better.”

Ben scratched at his cheek, annoyed at the hair beginning to grow as it always was between his beard days and post-shaving. “I’m not sure that’s exactly the same thing here, Bev.”

“Sure it is,” Bev said simply, beginning to walk once more. “Discontent with your life is discontent with your life. Whether it’s your job, your relationship, it’s the same. You can’t just push away the thing making you discontent… you’ve got to find something that makes you happy to replace it.”

Ben sighed softly, nodding. “You’re right. I know you are… but I worked so hard to even get the internship I have. If I leave then what do I have to show for my whole life?”

Beverly nodded. “Yeah I get that. After I left Tom I sort of realized that I put everything into the marriage? I let being Tom’s wife be my everything but sometimes you’ve got to start everything. Find a new you.”

“I still want to design buildings,” Ben said, looking back at the fancy houses he didn’t think he’d ever be able to afford. “And even though I think I resent these stupid houses, they still make me proud? Like that’s mine, I created that, no matter who tries to take that away from me. And if I stick out these internship, I’ll move high and I’ll never take credit for something else does. I can make the system better for somebody else.”

“But is it really worth it if you’re miserable the whole time you’re getting there?” Beverly said lightly. “Maybe the reason all your higher ups are such dicks is because they were miserable, too. A brutal cycle.”

“I can break that cycle.” Ben said firmly and Beverly smiled at him sadly.

“If anybody can do that, it’s you Ben Hanscom.” She said softly.

Ben turned to her and brought out maybe the first genuine smile he’d had sober in weeks. “You know I liked you too, right? In high school, and… before that. Pretty much the whole time I lived in Derry.”

“I suspected but I don’t think I ever knew for sure,” Beverly said. “Richie was always saying you did- but I never really listened, you know? Because you were my best friend, so if you liked me then I don’t know what I would’ve done. High school me was an idiot, and if I’d ever done anything about you liking me then… we probably wouldn’t be standing here together now.”

Ben took Beverly’s hand in his and looked deeply at her. “Beverly…”

“I just left my husband,” she said almost brokeningly. “I’m living in Eddie and Richie’s spare bedroom and I don’t even have a job. I’m a mess, you don’t want me like this, Ben.”

“I’ve always wanted you.” Ben said openly. “and I will always want you.”

Beverly cupped the side of his face and brought their lips together.

Our time is coming to a close as we near 3 am. The sun is preparing to rise, and we’ve yet to set. You know? I think we all need to take a chance to think through our life choses. What has gone so wrong for us that we’re all sitting awake at three in the morning? Where did we go wrong? But if you’re still out there in the world, I have some advice for you: No good decision is ever made after 2am.

Bill Denbrough was debating lighting up his first cigarette in seven years when the man slid into the booth across from him. The man leaned forward and raised his brow at Bill. “I hear you’re looking for work.”

Bill cleared his throat awkwardly and praying he didn’t stutter. “I… I’m a writer, b-b-b-but my girlfriend-“

“She pregnant?” The man chuckled. “You’d be surprised how often that what we hear ‘round here. So, let’s make it pretty clear right now. I don’t care about your pregnant girlfriend, and I don’t care ‘bout why you’re here. I just care that you’re here and what we’re going to do about it.”

Bill nodded quickly.

“So tell me, good pal,” the man smiled, giving him a golden toothed grin. “You wanna pack or deliver?”

welcome to the au i lovingly crafted but will never actually finish, if anyone at all wants to pick it up or do drabbles or do anything at all with it, please feel free, i’m a novice writer at best and i’d really love for this au to flourish

Eijirou’s a probationary firefighter, he’s been assigned to a high-risk district and couldn’t be more excited. (Captain is Fatgum, Tamaki is there, and so is Sero)The days go by so quickly, and there’s always shit to do around the station. He essentially gets to LIVE there, but he’s got money set aside monthly to pay for the open room in Denki’s apartment, always. He crashes there whenever he has downtime, and if he’s lucky, he gets invited out for drinks with possibly the hottest, grumpiest resident he’s ever laid eyes on.

Bakugou’s a 1st year resident, in training to become a neurosurgeon. He’s an asshole who picks fights with his attending constantly and treats patients with a furious passion. He was destined to be a surgeon. But then buff red-headed ‘I’m-great-with-kids-dogs-fire-and-people’ comes in covered in soot to check up on someone he’d saved and just HAS to be best friends with the idiot he’s rooming with. Fucking superb. (you already know that Aizawa is his attending)

Izuku’s an EMT, It’s a far cry from the glamour of six figure paychecks and reliable shifts - Izuku’s equipment never works, his mom worries about him constantly, and he can just barely afford the studio he’s renting, but he’s first in line to save lives and he couldn’t ask for more.

Todoroki’s a 1st year resident, in training to become a trauma surgeon. Coming from a long line of brain surgeons, the decision to stick to trauma was his own. It’s his own personal fuck-you to a wealthy, power-hungry control freak of a father who owns the hospital, and several surrounding medical schools in the area. He has the technical know-how to become a brain surgeon, but he’d rather extend his efforts to crisis-scenarios that would benefit from his involvement more, and he’d also ideally like to be as far away from Todoroki Enji as humanly possible. He works long, grating shifts, visits his mother as frequently as he can, and donates huge portions of his small salary to her facility.

Mina’s a probationary firefighter in the same unit as Kirishima, loving what she does always, she has a fuckton of routines she has to do to keep herself in shape; but everyone in the station loves her to pieces and she’s always up for a challenge. She’s the one who turns everything into a game as long as it’s safe, and it’s hard to put her in a bad mood.

Denki’s a radiologist assistant, in training to become a full-fledged radiology tech. He’s a precious cute boi. Got hit with lightning once, has a cool scar on his back to prove it. A hit with ladies and their kids, loves making silly voices from behind the MRI scanning room. There’s a little microphone in place so he can talk to the patients he scans. He’s so happy to be in this field, so happy to be doing what he loves and be tinkering with technology. He breaks dress code a LOT though, just cause he likes being comfy on the job.

Shinsou’s an animal assisted therapist - He’s still in training. He’s closing in on a degree in psychology but still needs a few more months of experience under his belt before he can graduate. He’s shadowing an occupational therapist in the meantime. He keeps having run-ins with a shit-eating resident who lives and breathes instigation. He’s so interested in this fucking loud obnoxious weirdo. He wants to figure out what his complex is. Tbh it starts off as a funny side project while he interns, but it spirals into a straight up obsession. Cue Shinsou buying him coffees every time their lunch breaks line up just so he can hear him talk. (It’s Monoma, of fucking course, just spends his time in the hospital laughing at Bakugou’s fuck-ups. Shinsou’s end-of-the-year study ends up being about him. it gets him formally recognized as an alumni and everything)

Uraraka’s a part-time EMT, she spends every other second of her life and downtime studying. She’s behind on her medical studies (pediatric surgeon) because of financial aid backing issues that pushed her back a couple months. It’s fucking devastating and beyond frustrating for her but what else is she supposed to do? (enter sugar daddy Yoayorozo, ‘she buys me coffee every morning after my shifts end and bought me one my required textbooks complete with color and everything, I TOLD HER OFFHANDEDLY WHAT MY FAVORITE CANDY WAS AND SHE WENT OFF AND BOUGHT OUT THE ENTIRE VENDING MACHINE AND GAVE THEM TO ME IN A JAR WHAT DO I DOOOOOOO’ - marry her, sweetie.)

I’m back! So sorry for the delay in updating. I got tangled up in Fictober then I needed a little bit of a break. Hope you enjoy this chapter. Also available on AO3. Thanks to @mel-loves-all for the lovely artwork!

6. The Secret is Out

Oliver had a lovely dinner out with his family. He smiled as he watched Thea dig into her chocolate cake, his mother sipped her tea. He really did miss them.

He really should have known the other shoe was going to drop.

“There is something I need to tell you. I want you to know I had your best interests at heart when I made this decision.” Moira gripped her napkin.

Oliver nodded for her to continue but couldn’t help feeling nervous.

“Late last week, I learned that a local reporter, Susan Williams was about to break a story saying Queen Consolidated was nearing bankruptcy.” Moira looked directly at Oliver. “This is not true. Your money has saved the company. So I agreed to do a sit-down interview with the reporter, to tell the truth, the whole truth. I think it was the right thing to do. I told them how we almost went bankrupt but were saved by Oliver’s generosity.”

Oliver reached over, stroked his mother’s hand. “It’s okay, Mom. It had to come out sometime. It’s not like we did anything illegal. I just wish you told me so I could be there for you.”

“Thank you so much for understanding, Oliver. Any other week I would have told you but I wanted you to keep your head in the game. I know how hard you have been working. I’m so proud of you.”

“Thanks, Mom,” Oliver squeezed her hand.

“Aww, you guys are so sweet. You are making me all teary. I think I need more cake.” Thea dipped her fork into the cake once more.

Oliver chuckled, turned back to his mother. “So, when is the interview?”

“Oh, I already did it. It airs tonight,” she looked down at her phone. “In about a half hour.”

Oliver suddenly felt panicked. This was going to blow up. Yes, they had done nothing wrong but it was a secret. Oliver stood up grabbing his phone. “I need to call Felicity.”

Felicity had come home put on some comfy clothes before ordering pizza in. She’d worked hard that day she deserved a treat.

She turned on the TV to see the Jets win was the top sports story of the day. They showed replays of Oliver’s amazing plays over and over. She was so proud of him. Felicity knew how hard Oliver was working to be successful. It was nice to see it work out.

Her phone rang, she picked it up expected to see the pizza company’s name but instead saw Oliver’s. Strange. “Hello.”

“Hey, Felicity, we need to talk.” Oliver tried to keep the panic out of his voice. He knew this breaking news was going to impact him and his team.

Something was wrong. Felicity could feel it in her gut. “Oliver, what’s wrong? How can I help?”

Oliver began pacing outside the restaurant. “News is about to break. I’m not sure what’s going to happen. It’s a bit of a long story. I know it’s late but can you meet?”

“Why don’t you just come over? Or I can come to you. Where are you?” Felicity was suddenly concerned about him driving. She hadn’t known Oliver very long but she could tell this was a big deal.

“I’m at the restaurant. I’ll just say goodbye to my family, then get a cab.” He looked back at the restaurant door. “Thanks, Felicity. I know this is above and beyond your job.”

Felicity smiled. “Hey, it’s not just my job, we are friends. I’m here for you. Don’t worry we will figure this out.”

Felicity had her tablet in hand when she opened the door to Oliver a short while later. He walked in, began pacing again. Felicity could see he was freaking out so she did the only thing she could think of. She hugged him. Maybe not professional but as she said before, they were more than that.

Oliver let out a sigh, pulled Felicity closer. He suddenly felt calmer. They stood hugging for a few minutes before he pulled back. “Thanks for that. Sorry for the freaking out.”

“Hey, freaking out is part of life. Why don’t we sit down so you can tell me all about it.” Felicity gestured toward her couch. “I have pizza if you want to stress eat.”

Oliver smiled, followed Felicity to the couch. “I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you this before. I planned to...it just never really came up.”

“That’s okay. Just tell me now.” Felicity rubbed his arm reassuringly.

Oliver took a breath. “I don’t know if you heard but my father died unexpectedly last year.”

Felicity gasped. “Oh, Oliver, I’m so sorry.”

Oliver squeezed Felicity hand. “Thank you. My father and I had our issues but it was still a shock. After his death, we discovered that my family’s company, Queen Consolidated, was in major financial trouble. The accountants said it was a done deal. The company had to declare bankruptcy without a major influx of cash to pay off the debt. That’s when I stepped in. I sold my homes, cars, anything I had plus signed a contract agreeing to make payments to keep the company afloat. Felicity, it was my family’s company, my father’s legacy I had to help out.”

Felicity scooched up on the couch, she gave Oliver a kiss on the cheek without thinking. “Oliver Queen, you are one hell of a man. You just continue to impress. So, what changed tonight?”

Oliver couldn’t lie. He loved that Felicity thought so highly of him. He smiled. “Tonight, my mom told me she gave a sit-down interview with a reporter, told the world how I bailed out the company. This will change how everyone looks at Queen Consolidated and how they look at me.”

Felicity picked up her tablet. “Okay, when does the interview air?”

“Tonight, maybe right now.” Oliver picked up the television remote. “May I?”

“Yes, see if you can find it.” They both watched, as Oliver stopped on news channels waiting to hear his name. The bigger channels mentioned his name but only relation to today’s game. It became clear they weren’t going to find it. “Hold on, let me find it online.” Felicity went to a Starling City news site found it quickly. “Okay, let’s watch then we will talk. But before we do. I want you to know I’m not worried. Not at all.” She squeezed Oliver’s hand while they watched his mother.

After the interview finished. Felicity put her tablet down on the coffee table, turned to Oliver. “Okay, I want you to tell me what exactly you are worried about.”

Oliver sat up straighter. “Well, it’s embarrassing people now know that the company was in financial trouble. They know that I kept it a secret, that I helped. My family’s dirty laundry has been aired in public!”

“Okay,” Felicity nodded. “I want to tell you how I see it. After hearing your side of the story than watching the interview. This is a PR miracle for you. It’s a good news story. YOU saved your family’s company. YOU were the good son, the knight in shining armour. You saved the day and all those people’s jobs. You have NOTHING to be ashamed of. This will show the world that you are a kind-hearted, caring, wonderful man.”

“Felicity,” Oliver began to blush.

“It’s true! I know you were worried about how this would negatively impact the team but I don’t see that happening. Oliver, you are a hero! On and off the field! If I didn’t already cheer for the Jets, I would now because I want to cheer for someone like you. Oliver, you amaze me!”

Oliver was dumbfounded. He truly wasn’t expected this reaction from anyone, let alone Felicity. He just did what you could to help your family. “Felicity, people know what my father did. I’m not a hero. I just did what needed to be done.”

“Okay, maybe you don’t believe me now but I’ll bring you around.” Felicity smiled brightly at him as though she had a secret. “No matter my opinion you came here for a social media plan. I recommend you not comment, reblog, retweet, share anything until after your first interview. I’m sure the news agency will be fighting to see who gets the first interview. Once you have your story out there, the way you want it told you can go from there. I can help you compose your first tweet.”

“I want you.” Oliver realized what he said, blushed. “I mean, I want you to do the interview. I would be most comfortable with that. Maybe we could do that Facebook Live thing you did with the Coach?”

“Oliver,” Felicity shook her head. “This could be a big moment for you. You could get great publicity if you do the interview with the right reporter. I think you should talk to your agent.”

“I can talk to John, my agent if you like but I’ll just tell him the same thing. I would be most comfortable if you did the interview.” Oliver shrugged his shoulders, “since he’s a great agent, he will agree.”

Felicity chuckled. “I see. Well, let me be clear, I’m not a journalist, I’m a social media coordinator. I can let you make your statement, we can post it on all the social media websites. I’m sure the news agencies will pick it up. I don’t think we should do a Facebook Live though because we don’t want to answer any questions right now, just make the statement. We can do it tomorrow. I have brunch plans with the girls but we can do it after that if your agent doesn’t convince you to talk to a real journalist. You can get some sleep, talk to John, think it over before you decide.”

Oliver got up from the couch. “I should let you get some rest. Sorry, for invading on your personal time but I feel much better now that I talked to you. I think we see things in our head a certain way and sometimes others don’t see it that way.”

“Are you saying you understand my hero comment?” Felicity smiled.

“No, No,” Oliver shook his head. “I’ll never get there but maybe it’s not the worst story that could have come out.”

“Oliver, I’m going to be honest. You had me worried, I thought I was getting to know you and you were a nice guy. I couldn’t imagine what you could have done. Then when you told me, I liked you a little more.”

“You like me?” Oliver gave Felicity the most charming smile before leaning down to give her a quick peck on the lips. “I like you too, Felicity. In case you were wondering.” Oliver smiled back at her as he closed the door.

Felicity smiled to herself as she locked her door for the night. Oliver Queen kissed her! Squee!!

Felicity had Mondays off as she worked Sundays, turns out its way easier to get a table at the local diner on Monday mornings. She invited both Caitlin, Iris and baby Nora to brunch. She really wanted the two women to meet, she thought they’d get along, plus they had already heard about one another countless times.

Iris rushed into the diner to find Felicity sitting alone in practically empty diner sipping coffee. “So sorry, I’m late. Nora sends her regards, seems she needed some Daddy time.”

Felicity laughed. “Well, it will give you some girl time. Caitlin should be here in a moment. I’m so excited for you two to meet.” They both heard the door open, turned. “There she is! Caitlin, I’d like you to meet Iris West Allen she is the interior designer I told you about. Iris this is Caitlin Snow the official photographer for the New York Jets. And you both happen to be my awesome new friends in New York so let’s have some pancakes ladies!”

The ladies place their orders, began sipping their coffee when Caitlin turned to Felicity, “so are you going to tell us? What’s going on with you and Oliver? Did he really bail out his family’s company? We need details!”

Caitlin looked to Iris for support, Iris nodded. “Spill Felicity.”

“There is nothing officially going on with Oliver and me. We are just getting to know each other. As for the bailing his family’s company out, it’s true. I’ll be helping him with his official statement right after lunch.” Felicity smiled thinking she’d appeased her friends.

“Nothing official?” Iris’ eyebrow rose.

“Yeah, Felicity what does that mean? Are you having a secret romance?” Caitlin poked some more.

“I like him and we are getting to know each other. And that’s all I have to say.” Felicity gave her girls a look letting them know that was the end of the discussion.

“Okay, but you have to give us an update next Monday.” Iris chided.

Felicity scrunched her nose. “Next Monday?”

Caitlin nodded enthusiastically. “Agreed, when we do brunch again. I need to live vicariously!”

Felicity smiled at her friends. “Okay, I promise to give you an update next Monday. Look our pancakes are here.”

The ladies settled in to enjoy their carbs.

Felicity texted Oliver as she was leaving the diner.

Felicity: Hey, hope all is good. Did you talk to your agent?

Oliver: Yes.

Oliver: Are you home?

Felicity: On my way

Oliver: Can you swing by when you get here?

Felicity: Sure. See you in a few minutes

Felicity stopped to pick up a pumpkin spice latte and a green tea before heading to Oliver’s. She stopped in front of Oliver’s door with the two cups, she really should have gotten a tray! She turned to place the cups on the ground so she could knock when the door opened.

“Uh, Felicity, what are you doing?”

“I brought you tea.” She held up a Starbucks cup. “And I got something for me, but I couldn’t knock.” Suddenly she felt embarrassed and hot. She blew hair out of her face. “Are you going to invite me in?”

“Yes, of course.” Oliver stepped aside. Felicity walked in, placed the cups on the kitchen island. She noticed that Oliver’s laptop was open to train website. “Going somewhere? Please don’t tell me you are running away. I’m here to help remember.”

“Haha.” Oliver picked up his cup, took a sip. “I was looking at options for Thanksgiving. We have a byweek so I’m going to go to my parent's cabin. Do you have plans?”

“Look at you thinking ahead.” Felicity chuckled. “The Smoaks don’t really do Thanksgiving. My mom has to work and neither of us is great cooks. I usually try to head home for Hanukkah if I can.”

“So no Thanksgiving?” Oliver was alarmed.

“Hey, it’s okay. Really, don't’ feel bad for me. Truly, Oliver let’s talk about what your agent said.” Felicity tried to move to change the topic. He was looking at her with such pity.

“Do you want to come with me? For Thanksgiving I mean.” Oliver suddenly realized it was probably way too soon for that but he really wanted her to spend Thanksgiving with him.

“Oliver, that’s like two months away! We don’t know...we don’t know what will be happening with us then.” Felicity turned and walk toward Oliver’s wall of windows pretending to look out at the view.

Oliver came up behind her, put his hand on her shoulder to turn her to face him. “I think I’ll like you even more than I do right now.” Oliver placed a kiss on her forehead. “Will you at least think about it?”

Felicity looked up at him and smiled. “Okay, I’ll think about it.”

“Okay,” Oliver rubbed his hands together. “I talked to John, he thinks talking to you in best because I’ll be most comfortable. He thinks the news organizations will pick it up once we post it online.”

“Okay then, where would you like to do this. Here?” Felicity looked around Oliver’s condo. “Or shall we go out?”

“Here is good.” Oliver smiled. “I just want to say in advance. Thank you for everything, Felicity.”

Life Updates before the year ends!

I haven’t posted a life update on here in a while (minus vague lil posts here and there) and since it’s the very end of the year, now’s a good a time as any! So much has happened!

So, going back about as far as I can remember this year:

APRIL-JULY: I went to Pittsburgh to attend the first con I’ve been to in a few years as well as interview for a job and prepare to move! Some of the visit was okay but a LOT went wrong! It ended in me going home AFTER getting the job and then calling to say I had to turn them down, I also had to get my apartment deposit back cause I decided to no longer move. Why? Lots of things but mostly what eventually occurred around July - I broke up with a longtime, SUPER close friend of mine (who was also my main reason to move in the first place.) So, the whole first half of the year had a LOT of intense emotions! And though I kinda regret that all that had to happen, I’m not that sad about it now. I’ve honestly flourished since then! Some things have to happen, some things have to change. I always hated and feared change and I didn’t think I’d ever go forward in life without him by my side but I think I’m actually doing a lot better without him. Pros: I realized I really want to host a panel! Also, that cute Tenn cosplayer I kept running into at the con!! Cons: Suicide urge and longtime friend breakup.

JUNE-SEPT: I got a job being a dishwasher at a new bar in town. I thought I’d hate it but it was pretty alright. Sometimes hella busy, a lot of the time hella chill, I had good co-workers and got to listen to music in my own little space and enjoy good internet on the weekends they were open. Eventually I got let go cause the business wasn’t doing too great (they closed a few weeks after) but it was good fun even if the pay sucked. Pros: Comfy job and good co-workers. Cons: Loss of job, upset from friend breakup continuing.

August: I made my first HRT appointment! It went very well (the doctor there was super nice!) and I officially started on testosterone in September! Pros/Cons: Moving on.

October: I made a HUGE change! I MOVED! Not as far as Pittsburgh but to Lexington, KY - a place I had always thought about living one day (it is one of the biggest cities in the state, has great shopping, a chill atmosphere, lots to do, is still relatively close to home (2.5-3 hr drive one way), and lots of job opportunities. One of my aunts used to live there and I LOVED visiting every summer to be spoiled rotten!) I moved in on the invite of my cousin and her husband, got a job doing cake decorating again (on the highest pay grade cause I had experience!) and am enjoying life here as a new Lexitonian! Pros: Moving! New job! Good coworkers! Trans respect! Good internet! Cons: Moving stress.

Oct-Now: Thanks to a busy schedule, being new to the roads here, new move stress and just getting started money-wise, I missed a LOT of the cool happenings that went down around Halloween. But now I’ve gotten rather used to my schedule and (most) of the area and have settled in rather well considering how quickly my moving decision was (hopefully I can hit up the Halloween scene here next year!) I adopted a new cat to keep me company after getting my psychiatrist to write me a letter for a companion animal - I couldn’t afford the deposit otherwise and cats help to chill me. She’s a lovely, small, 5 year old black cat I eventually named Nebula (names are hard orz - though her full name is Princess Nebula Crescent the First cause I wanted to be one of THOSE cat people! But I mostly refer to her as Neb.) Neb started off chill and loving to be held but she’s since gotten used to things around here too and now she wakes me at 6am every morning by knocking my phone and glasses off my bedside table, following me in the bathroom (and screaming at the door if I don’t let her in), stealing random weird household items overnight and leaving them in my floor, walking on my keyboard causing my laptop to spaz out and trying to destroy my brand new sheets - but she’s still a super sweetheart who demands attention and loves to be loved! I live on the second floor of the house in a sprawling suburb that’s rather conveniently located near one of the larger shopping areas in the city. It’s a zero crime area and everyone keeps to themselves in the neighborhood, it’s a nice place. I live with my cousin, her hubby and one of his friends along with their big baby Great Dane and her fiesty, old man chihuahua. The internet is great (I’ve missed that since I lived in London!), my coworkers are all pretty nice and chill, I’m out as trans to EVERYONE there and they’ve been really nice about it (my pronouns are respected!), my cuz makes sure I’m fed (too well lol I gained weight!) Some weeks are a little shaky with pay and bills but so far I’ve been able to make ends meet alright and enjoy myself time to time with a little shopping. I’m now on a larger dose of testosterone (giving myself shots is still hard tho! Eek! Big needle stab! >_<) I’ve attended a few of the local LGBTQ gatherings (first actual non-event meet is this Saturday - wish me well! I’ve been super shy at the last few and pretty much managed to talk to NO one! I’m hoping to be a little more social next time (fingers crossed!) I’ve become open to the idea of dating (and possibly sex...I’d like to try it at least.) Some days (like the last two) the depression likes to come back and smack me upside the head but all in all, I can tell that I’m doing SO much better than I was at the beginning of the year! Heck, I’ve only had ONE anxiety attack since July! My biggest issue lately has been feeling left out and lonely with no one to really talk to but I hope I can fix that next year! One of my goals is to not have to spend another holiday single (one can dream!) Pros: New cat! Adapting to new job well. Furthering the tans journey. Hopes for the future. Getting better acquainted with my body and sexuality. Cons: Having to get used to the new manager. Shorter work hours over the holiday weeks. Awkward with social situations and bad lonely feels. I really need a new laptop. Neb, please let me sleep! Still got that ‘have to stab myself in the leg’ fear. Gotta do more Halloween stuff next year!

So, to sum up the most important bits (tl;dr) - lost a super close friendship, started taking T, got a job, moved, got a new cat and have been doing much better the last several months! I’m really proud of myself actually! I hope to reach out and be a little more social in the new year (especially in the LGBTQ and anime communities) and hopefully score me an adorable, sweet partner before the end of 2020 as well as attend another anime con (missed YamaCon this month due to last minute financial issues OTL.) I have #GOALS! I’m feeling better, doing my best to keep depression at bay, and actually WANT to branch out! Wish me well, ya’ll! See you in the new decade soon!

I’m having a little trouble with The Four of Swords reversed for a Crossing The Threshold card. Since it’s reversed, maybe it means this is not a time for rest, that my character needs to take action. When he does take action, he risks losing his foundation. He may experience loss do to unwise decisions and foolish actions. The third card, The Queen of Wands makes total sense for this reading because my character has a mystery on his hands and is driven to find answers.
