Equipping for Impact: Essential Tools for Successful Media Coverage
Tumblr media
Equipped with the appropriate gear, one can capture a story with accuracy or overlook important information in the hectic world of media coverage. It is critical to have the necessary equipment on hand whether you work as a front-line journalist, a photographer recording events, or a filmmaker capturing the moment.
In this blog, let’s take a quick look at the essential tools for media coverage in this blog post and how each one is essential to delivering the story.
Must have equipments for media coverage
Here is a list of all the required equipments needed for a media coverage:
Camera
A reliable camera is the foundation of any arrangement for media coverage. Having a device that can take excellent photos and videos is crucial, regardless of whether you use a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or even a smartphone. To guarantee that you can record crisp, clear video in any circumstance, look for features like quick focusing, low light performance, and picture stabilization.
Lenses
To take a range of pictures in various settings, you need a collection of adaptable lenses. While a telephoto lens enables you to zoom in on far-off subjects and catch details from a distance, a wide-angle lens is best for capturing vast scenes and establishing pictures. Think about purchasing both prime lenses—which have faster aperture settings and better image quality—and zoom lenses—which are more versatile and convenient.
Audio Equipment
When it comes to media coverage, clear, crisp audio is equally as crucial as excellent graphics. To record crystal-clear audio in any setting, spend money on a high-quality microphone system that includes both shotgun and lavalier microphones. You may make precise word captures by monitoring and adjusting audio levels on the fly with the use of a portable audio recorder or mixer.
Tripod or monopod
The secret to getting steady, polished video is stabilization. You may easily capture time-lapse sequences, long exposures, and smooth panning photos with the steadiness and support of a strong tripod or monopod. Seek for a portable, light-weight solution that is convenient to move to different places.
Lighting Equipment
Especially in low light or inside environments, well-lit shots can make all the difference in the world. Purchase on-camera flashes or portable LED lights to brighten your subjects and give your photos more depth and character. To create a more pleasing light and soften sharp shadows, think about use diffusers and reflectors.
Portable Power Solutions
It's critical to have portable power solutions on hand to keep your equipment charged and operational when working in remote areas where access to power outlets may be restricted. Purchase portable battery packs, solar chargers, and extra batteries to make sure you never run out of power when you need it most.
Portable Storage
Having enough capacity on your device to store your images and movies is essential because media coverage generates a lot of data. Invest in portable hard drives and high-capacity memory cards to save your files safely.
Protective Gear
It's important to put safety first because media coverage frequently brings you into unpredictably changing and occasionally dangerous circumstances. To shield your equipment from the weather, spend money on weatherproof camera bags, lens hoods, and lens filters. To protect your personal safety and comfort while on assignment, think about dressing in cozy, weather-appropriate clothes and shoes.
Communication Tools
Collaborating with coworkers, conducting source interviews, and maintaining connections while working on an assignment all depend on effective communication. To make sure you can stay in contact with your team even in difficult or remote places, invest in dependable communication tools like satellite phones, two-way radios, or smartphones.
Editing tools
Having access to high-quality editing tools after capturing your material is crucial for honing your captured shots and presenting the narrative in an engaging way. Invest in industry-standard editing tools, such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom for photo editing, and Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro for video editing. Learn about these tools and how they can help you realize your vision with accuracy and originality.
Conclusion
To sum up, having the appropriate tools is crucial for effective media coverage. Whether you're taking pictures, filming films, or conducting interviews, investing in top-notch equipment will guarantee that you can accurately and clearly tell a narrative. Every piece of equipment, from lenses and cameras to audio equipment and editing software, is essential to telling the story and successfully engaging the audience. By arming yourself with the necessary tools of the trade, you'll be prepared to approach any task with professionalism and assurance.

Riven's Basic Info
Tumblr media
Name: Riven Marcus Hewlett
Faceclaims for Riven came very easily, surprisingly. For the 60s, we have the amazing Frankie Avalon (almost any beach movie from the 60s). For the 80s, there’s Jason Bateman (Teen Wolf Too). For the 90s, I picked Brad Pitt (Fight Club). And, finally, we have Dacre Montgomery for the present (Stranger Things).
Nicknames: Riv, Rivet, and “you ass” (Vivien’s favorite way to greet him)
Age: 19
Date of Birth: October 27
Zodiac: Scorpio
Birthstone: Opal and Pink Tourmaline
Nationality: American and Italian
Sexuality: Straight (though even he questions it sometimes lol)
Birthplace: Salem Hospital, Salem, Massachusetts
Current Residence: Whipple Avenue, Laconia, New Hampshire
Occupation: Photographer/videographer for local businesses and the newspaper, junior tattoo artist at a piercing/tattoo shop in Laconia, Dungeon Master for a small D&D group, drummer in a band he made in high school, and he’s, obviously, a competitive skater. He wants to become a director someday, but he’s saving his money for now.
Talents/Skills: He somehow knows people's secrets without having them tell him, he draws things pretty realistically, he’s known for telling the truth all the time, but he’s a fairly convincing liar, and he’s great at filmmaking, which is useful for any short films Vivien and the boys want to make.
Birth order: Only child
Parents: Anthony Hewlett and Emmaline Russo
Signature:
Tumblr media
Height: 6’2” or 189cm
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair Color: Auburn brown, but it looks golden brown in certain lighting
Glasses or contact lenses: He needed glasses as a child, but had surgery to correct his eyes once he turned 18.
Distinguishing features: His nose crinkles when he laughs and he has two tattoos - a snake on his collarbone and lightning on his ribcage - but he and Vivien both agreed to get matching space tattoos when she turns 18.
Mannerisms: Tapping his feet along to music whether it’s in his head or not, constantly checking the time when he’s nervous, picking at the skin around his fingernails, and he always stacks up plates and silverware for waitstaff when he eats out so it will be easier for them to take.
Health: Had terrible eyesight as a kid, is allergic to pollen, and has allergy-induced asthma.
Hobbies: Protecting those he cares about, contributing to chaos, taking in injured animals, playing drums (he’s the one who taught Vivien how to play), and exploring abandoned places (once again, if you think that’s how Vivien started, you’d be right).
Greatest flaw (in their opinion): How selfless he can be sometimes. Riven treats others’ lives as more important than his own and will do anything it takes, even sacrificing himself, to keep them safe. A prime example of this is his relationship with Vivien. She is like a little sister to him and has been for most of his life, so he would do anything for her. He’s almost gotten arrested to protect her once when they were in an abandoned school and someone called the cops on them. He puts himself at risk for those he loves and he knows that will be his downfall someday.
Best quality (in their opinion): His best quality and greatest flaw are pretty much the same things - his infinite loyalty to those he considers friends/family.
Biggest fear: Dying. He’s had a few close calls before - one including a skating accident and another coming home from a band session on wet roads - and the thought of dying genuinely terrifies him.
Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff
Favorite ice cream: Chocolate fudge brownie (or, as he calls it, Death By Chocolate)
Favorite color: Sage green
Favorite numbers: 33 and 74
Favorite songs: Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus, Perfume by Lovejoy, and In The End by Linkin Park
Favorite movies: White Chicks, The Karate Kid, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Free Guy, and Ratatouille
Favorite TV shows: Loki, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Chernobyl, Game of Thrones, and Attack on Titan (he has watched both the English and Japanese versions, and is very proud of the fact that he knew enough Japanese to understand most of what they were saying without subtitles)
Favorite books: You’ll Be the Death of Me by Karen M. McManus, Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Six of Crows, and The Count of Monte Cristo
Favorite video games: Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, The Walking Dead, and Baldur’s Gate 3
A musical they like: Starlight Express
A place they want to visit: Puerto Rico (mostly for the old cars that are very popular there)

Jake Seal Black Hangar Discusses Cultural Roots in Crafting Unique Film Ideas
Tumblr media
In a world where storytelling transcends borders, the importance of cultural roots in crafting unique film ideas cannot be overstated. Jake Seal Black Hangar Studios emphasizes how cultural diversity shapes the narrative landscape, offering a wellspring of inspiration for filmmakers.
Understanding the Role of Cultural Roots in Storytelling
Every story has its origins, often deeply connected to the storyteller’s cultural background. Jake Seal Black Hangar believes that embracing these roots allows filmmakers to create authentic and relatable stories. Cultural elements such as traditions, languages, and societal norms add richness and depth to a narrative, making it more than just a plot—it becomes an experience.
For instance, films like Slumdog Millionaire or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon gained global acclaim not only for their stories but also for their cultural resonance. According to Seal, exploring one’s heritage can be the key to creating a story that resonates universally while remaining deeply personal.
Inspiration Through Cultural Lenses
Seal emphasizes that cultural roots provide filmmakers with unique lenses to view the world. These perspectives often lead to stories that challenge mainstream narratives, bringing fresh voices to the industry.
“By exploring your culture’s folklore, history, or even local customs, you uncover ideas that no one else can replicate,” Seal shares. Such originality is crucial in an era where audiences seek authentic and diverse content.
Filmmakers can draw from:
Local folklore and mythology: These often serve as untapped sources of creativity.
Historical events: Reimagining pivotal moments with a cultural twist can offer compelling narratives.
Daily life and traditions: Small yet significant cultural practices can shape characters and plots.
Blending Cultures for Broader Appeal
Jake Seal Black Hangar also discusses the potential of merging cultural elements to create globally appealing films. He cites examples of directors who have successfully fused their cultural backgrounds with international themes. Films like Coco and Black Panther are prime examples of how blending cultural authenticity with universal themes creates cinematic magic.
According to Jake Seal Black Hangar, this approach requires a delicate balance. “Respecting the authenticity of each culture while crafting a cohesive story is an art in itself,” he explains. By collaborating with cultural consultants or local experts, filmmakers can ensure their portrayals are respectful and accurate.
Challenges of Rooted Storytelling
While cultural storytelling offers immense potential, it also comes with challenges. Jake Seal Black Hangar notes that filmmakers often face the dilemma of staying true to their roots versus catering to a broader audience.
Additionally, misrepresentation or stereotyping can harm the integrity of a story—seal advocates for meticulous research and collaboration to overcome these obstacles. “Authenticity requires effort,” he says. “But the reward is a story that stands out and builds a deeper connection with audiences.”
The Role of Technology in Preserving Cultural Narratives
Modern technology has revolutionized filmmaking, making preserving and sharing cultural narratives easier. Virtual production techniques and digital platforms allow filmmakers to recreate cultural landscapes precisely.
Jake Seal Black Hangar Studios has been at the forefront of using cutting-edge technology to support filmmakers in bringing culturally rich stories to life. “Our goal is to empower storytellers to craft narratives that honor their heritage while leveraging modern tools to enhance their vision,” Seal remarks.
Why Cultural Roots Matter in Modern Filmmaking
In an industry driven by originality, filmmakers who embrace their cultural roots often produce groundbreaking work. Jake Seal Black Hangar argues that cultural authenticity is not a limitation but a strength. It offers filmmakers the chance to connect with audiences on a deeper level, creating stories that are both entertaining and thought-provoking.
In a world where stories are increasingly homogenized, Seal’s approach stands as a reminder of the power of individuality. By weaving cultural roots into their work, filmmakers can craft narratives that captivate and celebrate the diversity of human experience.
Conclusion
Jake Seal Black Hangar insights into the significance of cultural roots in filmmaking underscore the importance of authenticity in storytelling. Whether by drawing from personal heritage or exploring global traditions, filmmakers have the opportunity to create unique narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide.
As Seal puts it, “Your culture is your superpower. Use it to tell stories that only you can tell.” By doing so, filmmakers can ensure their work stands the test of time, enriching the cinematic world with diverse and meaningful stories.

A sturdy tripod like the Manfrotto 535 with a fluid head is necessary for static shots and achieving smooth pans and tilts. This equipment provides the stability needed for longer, stationary shots during ceremony coverage.
Additionally, the Peak Design Slide Lite camera strap is a versatile accessory, offering quick access and secure support during shooting. It's particularly beneficial for photographers who need to be mobile and ready to adapt quickly to different shot requirements.

For handheld, battery-powered LED light, the Westcott Icelight 2 provides soft, diffused illumination. It's especially useful for quickly lighting up a subject without the need for complicated light stands.
For those on a tighter budget, the Neewer bi-color 480 LED video light kit is a budget-friendly option that offers adjustable color temperature and brightness. It's suitable for studio-like setups during pre-wedding preparations or interviews.
Accessories and Extras
Reliable accessories are often underestimated but crucial. A high-capacity memory card like the Sandisk Extreme PRO 1TB SDXC UHS-I Card is essential for capturing 4K and 8K footage. These high-speed cards ensure that you never miss a moment due to storage limitations.
For transporting and protecting camera gear, the Pelican 1510 Carry-On Case offers durability and watertight protection, making it a dependable choice for traveling filmmakers.
Lastly, the Think Tank Photo Airport Advantage Rolling Camera Bag combines portability with functionality, providing a compact, TSA-friendly solution for carrying essential gear.
Equipping yourself with the necessary gear for a successful wedding shoot is crucial for capturing high-quality footage that tells an engaging story. By investing in reliable camera equipment, lenses, audio gear, stabilization tools, lighting equipment, and accessories, wedding filmmakers can ensure a smooth and successful wedding film production.

AUTHENTICALLY YOU from Cesar Velasco on Vimeo.
About a year ago, I drove through an ice storm from Washington DC back to Dallas in order to make Authentically You. It was an extremely difficult time for me—but because this project was so close to my heart, it got me through. Like Grandes Momentos, this piece is a personal testament to the places and people that made me who I am. Using a docu-style commercial approach, Authentically You conveys a sense of personal style and story, merging both my background in the Dallas & Denton Music scene with my craft in filmmaking. It was a challenging and cathartic revelation both on set and its final form as to who I was, who I am and who I yearn to be.
Thank you to everyone involved in this–Every single cast member and location in this piece has a strong attachment both to a very unique scene of artists and to myself. Thank you to the dedicated crew who understood the intricacies of my vision and supported me throughout it all.
Finally, I want to give a huge shout out to every single musician in Denton and Dallas and beyond. For giving me a home when I needed it the most, for being my friends when no one else would, and for inviting me in without hesitation. To the relentlessness of those living in the margins by their own means, to every artists that says “fuck you” to the status quo and dreams bigger than most people dare. To those that stay true to who they are and live with continual authenticity and intention.
Thank you for inspiring me, thank you for giving me a place. This one is for my band, my friends, and finding home in Denton, Texas.

Moving Portrait Evaluation
The theme of my video was about street life in my local community. The video was to capture everyday life and aims to show the spirit of the people.  I wanted to create a video that was a thought-provoking representation of street life allowing viewers to appreciate the unique characteristics of the community.
I studied short films with a similar theme and length, considering pacing, tempo, colour, number of shots, sound, and grading. I created a shot list and a storyboard, that included different viewpoints, focal lengths, and movement techniques. I was familiar with the location and considered lighting and weather conditions to capture the best possible footage. I used a 20mm, 50mm, and 100mm prime lens, along with a gimbal. Avoiding zoom lenses to maintain balance on the gimbal.
Using a gimbal for stabilizing the footage was a new technique that I experienced. It was an enjoyable and effective tool in capturing smooth and steady movements. However, during the shoot, I encountered a minor setback when I realized that a cable was missing, preventing me from using the gimbal for creating dynamic movements, a time-lapse shot and low viewpoints. Despite this limitation, I was able to compensate by manually panning and tilting the camera to achieve the desired effect.
I had to make modifications to my shot list due to the limited functions of the gimbal. For instance, some complex tracking shots or dynamic movements were not feasible due to the gimbal's restrictions as a result, I had to adjust my shot list and focus on shots that the gimbal could effectively execute.
Creating a portrait video allowed me to enhance my knowledge and skills in various areas. Firstly, I deepened my understanding of visual composition by exploring different framing techniques, angles, and pacing. Additionally, I now have a proficiency in gimbal operation and settings necessary to capture high-quality footage. I have developed my editing skills using Premier Pro, further learning its functions. Working on this project improved my ability to communicate and guide the subjects.
Unfortunately, the video I created did not meet my expectations and I am not satisfied with the result. Firstly, the footage I captured did not align with the vision I had during the planning stage. The shots lacked the desired people, failing to effectively convey the intended message. Additionally, there were technical issues that affected the overall quality of the video, such as lighting inconsistencies and pacing problems. These factors combined to create a video that fell short of my creative ideas.
Due to unforeseen challenges, primarily attributed to adverse weather conditions and roadblocks during the filming stage. Heavy rain and snow made it difficult to capture the intended scenes and compromised the overall visual quality. In addition, the roadblocks disrupted the planned shooting locations, resulting in a disjointed narrative and incomplete coverage. However, this has taught me to be adaptable and better prepared for unpredictable circumstances. I now understand the need for flexibility and proactive problem-solving in filmmaking.

Cinematography Workshop – Notes
Always balance camera and set marks on tripod for different lenses. This saves time when prepping different shots/scenes.
Ensure pan/tilt fluid head is set to the right setting based on the movement situation. More tension = slower movement but smoother. Less tension = Fast movement but can be unstable
Set frame reference points. This means the frame can be setup quicker for retakes and time can be saved.
Camera movement needs to be thought about professionally. Handheld needs clear reasoning for why it’s being used. Sometimes it can’t be helped for example in a car, however in other cases this decision must be made carefully.  For filmmaking at a high-level movement should be captured through a tripod, Steadicam or dolly unless there's a desired effect being applied.
Don’t try and be too impressive with handheld, it’s important to be reasonable. For example, don’t decide to shoot with a shallow focus when filming a handheld scene. Don’t take unnecessary risks with handheld, time is what is most valuable.
On the Arri Alexa, it is possible to run a BNC cable from one camera into the “RET / SYNC" input of the other camera. If you set up one of the user buttons to show the “return", you can switch between viewing your own framing, and the other camera.
When choosing a lens, consider what shape you want the characters face to be.
Dialogue scenes between characters should be consistent visually In terms of settings and the framing should be mirrored to keep a correct eyeline
Tighter the lens the closer the eyeline should be to the lens.
Stronger eyeline can be created if actors look at each other in a certain way. You should tell an actor to use their off-camera eye to look at the other actors on camera eye. This allows us to see the actors’ eyes more clearly.
Tumblr media
180 Degree rule
The camera should stay on one side of the action/movement.
Otherwise, it will be unclear if the characters are looking at each other and the geography will be off.
Storyboarding and floor plans are best for avoiding / getting confused about this on set.
It can be confusing when there are more than one characters and therefor multiple eyeline. It is easier to understand if you look at the eyelines individually to avoid confusion with which line is being crossed.

Zoom Lenses:
Pros:
Quick to use.
Easy to find new focal length if director is undecisive.
Focus should work with zoom so can be good for experimentation.
Cons:
Heavier and bigger normally
Not as good minimum focus
Can make you lazy as they’re easier and quicker to use.
Not as sharp as prime lenses
Normally require more light as T-stop isn’t as low as a prime.
Tumblr media
Lens Breathing - how they magnify images at different focusing distances. Focus breathing refers to when a lens's focal length changes subtly (or noticeably) as the focusing distance changes.
Telegraphing – Conveying information to the audience through acting or non-verbal cues, creating a hint of meaning and outcome of dramatic action. E.g. Leaving a lot of space on the right of the frame, suggests the actor is going to walk across the frame.
Tumblr media
Strobing – Vertical lines that appear on the image as the camera moves. Minimised by panning slower. Can also place a character in front of the frame so that the viewers eyes are following them, as well as adding slight blur the background can minimise. Increasing the shutter angle can sometimes remove strobing but can decrease quality of overall shot. Fast pans wont have strobing as every frame is a motion blur.
