Remembering Qamar Jalalabadi today on his 21st death anniversary (09/01/2003).

He was an amazing poet and lyricist for Hindi movie songs. Born Om Prakash Bhandari in 1917 in Jalalabad, near Amritsar, he started writing Urdu poetry at just seven years old. Even without support at home, he found encouragement from a traveling poet, Amar, who gave him the pen name Qamar, meaning 'moon', and added 'Jalalabadi' from his hometown.

After finishing school in Amritsar, he wrote for Lahore newspapers like Daily Milap and Daily Pratap. Moving to Pune in the 1940s, he started his film career. His first big hit was in the 1942 movie Zamindar. The song "Duniya me garibonko aaraam nahi milta" became a big hit.

He then went to Bombay, writing songs for almost 40 years. Famous singers like Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar sang his songs, and he worked with composers like S.D. Burman. Some of his hits include "sunti nahi duniya kabhi fariyaad kissi ki" and "Dil kis liye rota hai".

Some of his memorable songs from his early include "sunti nahi duniya kabhi fariyaad kissi ki" (Renuka, 1947) and the ghazal "Dil kis liye rota hai...pyar ki duniya me, aisa hi hota hai" (sung by Naseem Banu for the film Mulaquat in 1947). The noted dancer Sitara Devi performed some of his songs in Chand (1944). Chand was one of the earliest of Qamarji's successful and memorable films.

As a lyricist, Qamar Jalalabadi was very versatile. On one hand he wrote mesmeric duets like "sun meri saanwari mujhko kahin tum bhool na jana…" sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd. Rafi (film: Aansoo 1953) and on the other hand he penned comic relief songs like “khush hai zamana aaj pehli tarikh hai” endured with full throttle gusto by Kishore Kumar (film: Pehli Tarikh-1954). This song turned into veritable anthem and was played on Radio Ceylon on the first of every month for decades, and it probably still is.

The film Howrah Bridge (1954) skyrocketed his career as lyricist to unpredescented heights. Songs like "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" (Geeta Dutt) and "aaiye meherbaan, baithiye janejaan…." (Asha Bhonsle) became highly popular. In his long career span he worked for several Film Companies like; Prabhat Film Company, Pancholi Pictures, Filmistan Ltd., Famous Pictures, Minerva Movietone, Prakash Pictures, Wadia Films Ltd., Filmkar Ltd., Sippy Films, N.C Sippy Films, Shri Shakti Films, Mitra Productions and many more.

He worked with many film companies and was a founder member of the Film Writers Association & IPRS in Mumbai. He also read poetry at mushairas across India. A true legend, his work still inspires many.

Why We Need More Movies Like 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'

There is some reason why an amazing movie like Perks of Being a Wallflower managed to get a large group of followers and fans. What did it do so right that it’s now on the every movie lover's favorite list?

So here's my take on this.

Wallflower. Before this movie I never had heard of this word before. Neither did I understand what it meant while watching it nor did the Patrick's definition of wallflower, "You see and you understand." made that much of an impact on me. The first time I watched this movie I had no idea that I am getting into reflection of almost every introvert I have ever met.

I loved POBW. I absolutely loved it. Not because it already had a growing fan base and everyone liked it or just because of Emma Watson. Being an extroverted introvert I loved it because this movie managed to bring all those things that I had ever wanted to say and couldn't in characters whose lifestyles are so relatable to ours.

So here is my take on what I learned and found out about-

Characters

All the characters were well thought. They were unique, vibrant and they were misfits. Perks of Being a Wallflower simply showed viewers what they wanted to see... Themselves.

Not only had it showed us who we are but it also showed us how to embrace it.

Charlie. After everything's Charlie been through, he still finds it in his heart to keep loving those around him. He know how it feels to have no friends in life and that is why he respects them. He's so soft-spoken that he even talks to the people who mocks him in lower voice.

Sam. We all want a girl like Sam in our lives. She is a free spirit and she is awesome. And I loved every single thing about her. Needless to say her looks, her attitude, her taste in music, the way she treats people.

Patrick. In spite of his insecurities and problems, he still somehow manages stay optimistic and always looks at the bright side. He is sad and broken inside but still entertains everyone with his vibrant personality. He cares for his friends and he knows the pain of missing out. Maybe that is what he saw in Charlie and stayed with him till the end.

Friendship

I have not always been an ambivert. There was a time I was an all-time introvert and did not have a colorful social life. When I watched this movie for the first time, the worst part of my life was already over. Fortunately I had survived, but there was a part of me that felt that if I had seen this movie earlier I would have managed to handle things in a different way than I did before. POBW appeals most to a specific age group of 16 to 25 because that is the age when you are full of insecurities and meet a lot of temporary people in your life. You have a desire to prove yourself, but most of the time you have minimum idea of where your life is taking you. This time period is difficult but the most important in our life. And in this age all we keep looking for is a friend who will understand what we are going through. All you seek is someone with whom you can talk out all your problems. That is one hell of a thing to come by though.

It is rarest of things to find the group of friends with such a deep understanding between them. Sam, Patrick, Charlie, Mary Elizabeth all are different and unique in their own ways. Having so much in a movie to deeply connect with, this single movie showed us what we are actually looking in a friend. How deepest of the connections are not physical but mental. It showed us everything. From choosing your friends to standing out for them in bad times of their lives and most importantly to respect them.

Relationships

Relationships define us. They make us what we are today. People tend to settle down for less than they deserve only because they need to be with someone. And that 'Necessity' to be in a relationship may have many silly reasons like, to blend in with people or maintaining your standard, making your ex jealous or simply feeling that we always need someone to complete ourselves. Throughout the entire movie Candice and Charlie did exactly that. There was no reason for Candice to keep dating Ponytail Derek but she did anyway just because all she was desperately looking for is a new guy to fill the hole her last boyfriend left. Charlie kept dating Mary Elizabeth just because he didn't want to hurt her feelings. Eventually he did. And in a worse way possible. Both of the relationships ended up being disasters.

A quote by Professor Anderson, “We accept the love we think we deserve." couldn't be truer. We are so blindsided by our failed relationships that we forget to know our worth sometimes. However toxic the relationship is, we tend to stick to it just for the sake of not being alone.

Life

There are only few gem of movies like this that focuses on dark side of loneliness and feeling completely helpless

Yes, it’s painful.

It hurts to know that it’s you who is that boring dude at the party.

It hurts to know that you are expendable.

It hurts to know that that things maybe aren't going to get better at all.

It hurts to know that everyone's going to leave you somehow.

It hurts to feel completely lonely even though you are in room full of people.

Even if all the above things may not be true at all. But sometimes when all those close to you starts to leave you, everyone you cared about, those who used to spend hours with you now won't even find two minutes to talk to you. People change. That is truth.

POBW gives hope to people just like it did to Charlie that it will get better. Slowly but eventually. Even though you have had fair share wrong people in life before does not mean that you won’t find what you are looking for. You will find your Sam and Patrick someday.

And when they come, they will stay.
