We rijden vandaag van Porto naar Bonifacio in het zuiden. Het wordt weer slingeren over de smalle bergweggetjes, tot we de afslag naar Ajaccio nemen, de hoofdstad van Corsica. Het is al bij al een tegenvaller, veel lelijke buitenwijken, we parkeren achter het ziekenhuis, alles ziet er erg verwaarloosd uit. Niet wat we op alle andere plaatsen hier te zien kregen, waar hard gewerkt wordt om het er netjes te laten uitzien.

Na een uurtje hebben we het gezien en bollen we verder. Een uurtje of twee verder stoppen we bij de archeologische site van Filitosa. Waar in de steentijd een versterkte nederzetting geweest is. De menhirs zijn uniek hier, ze stellen krijgers met hun zwaard voor. Er wordt ook hier aan een nieuw bezoekerscentrum gewerkt, het museum is al zo goed als klaar.

Dan wordt het landschap stilaan vlakker en de wegen rechter… rond half zes landen we in Bonifacio, het hotel is een van de laatste gebouwen op de hoge rots waar het oude stadje in een versterkte burcht ligt.

Als we uit de auto stappen waaien we bijna omver.

Lock Screen is Filitosa, a Megalithic site in Corsica that I saw two years ago. It was absolutely amazing, I 100% recommend if you ever get a chance.

Nicer things to do

@thiswaycomessomethingwicked - If you like prehistory you might also visit Cucuruzzu, which is sort of between Ajaccio and Bonifacio, but it’s a bit farther out of the way than Filitosa. Cool site though and certainly worth a visit if you have a car. - You could hire out a boat to go to Scandola (nature reserve). It’s farther north, past Porto, and is really more of an all-day affair, but quite lovely. If you take a small-ish boat you can go in and about the grottos. Might see some dolphins too. I think that you can get there by boat service from the Ajaccio port as well, without having to hire out a private pilot, the boat itself, petrol, etc. (just don’t get on one of the huge ones. Go for something like 12-14 persons.)

C’est en 1959, que l’archéologue Roger Grosjean, à qui l’on doit notamment la renommée des sites de Filitosa à Sollacaro et de Cauria à Sartène, mentionne le site de Cucuruzzu. En 1964, l’étude sera reprise par François de Lanfranchi, qui poursuivra et étendra ses recherches jusque dans les années 1990.
