There’s a beauty to this S-curve building on EDSA, yet it feels like a symbol of the Philippines' growing divide. This structure represents ambition and possibility but also hints at the unequal reach of those opportunities. Are these buildings the signs of real progress, or do they highlight the separation between those who shape the city and those who struggle daily within it? Who here recognizes this landmark and its underlying story? Why do you think it is in the form of an S?

Icons of Change Awards 2025
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education
Champion in Music Education and Vocal Coaching
ANTHONY A. CAILAO (a.k.a. Eugene Cailao)
Headmaster | Vocal Coach | Mentor | Music Industry Veteran
Anthony A. Cailao, better known in the industry as Eugene Cailao, has spent over two decades honing his craft as a vocal coach, mentor, and performer, playing a pivotal role in shaping the careers of many successful Filipino artists. His contributions to the music industry extend far beyond the stage, focusing on nurturing the talents of emerging vocalists and performers who go on to influence the global music scene.
Eugene's journey in the music world began as a session vocalist. He has provided backing vocals for a range of Filipino musical legends, including Regine Velasquez, Lea Salonga, Lani Misalucha, Martin Nievera, and Sarah Geronimo. His talent has also been recognized internationally, with contributions to the music of Julia Fordham, as well as notable performances with American Idol’s Taylor Hicks and Michael Johns.
While his performances on live stages and in recording studios helped establish his reputation as a versatile vocalist, it is his passion for teaching that has solidified his place as a major figure in the Philippine music scene. As a vocal coach for The World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA), Eugene has been an instrumental part of Team Philippines since 2013. Under his coaching, the team has won numerous awards, bringing Filipino talent to the international stage. His work has also expanded to Team Japan and Team Korea, demonstrating his global impact as an educator and coach.
Eugene's leadership role as Headmaster at the Academy of the Performing Arts has allowed him to shape the future of many aspiring artists, instilling in them not just the technical skills needed to succeed in the music industry but also the importance of discipline, hard work, and passion for their craft. His students benefit from his deep understanding of the industry, his experience working with top-tier Filipino artists, and his ability to nurture raw talent into polished performers.
His involvement in television shows such as The Voice of the Philippines, Pilipinas Got Talent, X-Factor Philippines, and Tawag ng Tanghalan demonstrates Eugene's ongoing commitment to the development of the Filipino music industry. Eugene’s work as a coach extends beyond the classroom, as he continues to support young talent both in the Philippines and internationally, helping them to excel in the music industry.
For Eugene, music education is more than just imparting technical skills—it’s about inspiring the next generation of artists to find their unique voice and confidently take their place in the world of music. His dedication to quality education and vocal coaching makes him a standout figure in the Philippines' creative community.
Through his coaching, Eugene Cailao has not only built successful careers but has also contributed to the cultural vibrancy of the Philippines, showcasing Filipino talent on international platforms. It is for his exceptional impact on music education and vocal coaching that he is awarded the Champion in Music Education and Vocal Coaching title at the Icons of Change Awards 2025.

As I observe this S-curve building along EDSA, I see it as part of a landscape that inspires and provokes thought. In a city of contrasts, this structure stands as a quiet reminder of who holds the power to shape our skyline while many continue to struggle on its streets to get home. What do you think these projects say about our society’s priorities? Does architecture in the Philippines reflect unity, or is it a mirror of the gaps within our society?
