Philippines, Lemme Count the Ways You are Ripe for Age-Appropriate Dance...
Ah, the Philippines. They are known for the itik-itik, tinikling, cariƱosa, pandanggo, and the Cagayan Valley's version of the jota. And the resources here to fund and establish a NUVO or 24 Seven-esque dance comp are scarce...
And for parents; dance studio owners and faculty; pastors; and EVEN child welfare agents concerned about the hypersexualization and exploitation in youth dance education, the paucity of resources needed to create such dance comps is a VERY GOOD THING!
Dance adjudicator Jamie White ranted about what she saw at a competition past. She saw a mini dancer who was clad in a bra top and booty shorts doing a knee slide that ends with her thighs open. She also saw her twerk in a front split, with her facing upstage.
Granted the high Catholic Christian populace here in the Philippines, those movements and costuming in routines that include those elements in their choreography are better suited for the shady bars lining Fields Ave. in Barangay Balibago, Angeles, Pampanga, than school auditoria (which are often outdoors).
"Filipino culture, deeply influenced by Catholic values, emphasizes modesty and appropriateness," Copilot noted, "Choreography that includes provocative movements, such as kneeling open-legged, and revealing costumes can be seen as disrespectful and inappropriate for young dancers. This can discourage organizers from hosting multigenre competitions that might feature such content."
"Parents in the Philippines may have strong objections to their children participating in routines that they perceive as overly sexualized. This concern can reduce the number of participants willing to enroll in multigenre competitions, thus limiting the demand and feasibility for such events."
youtube
The only dance comps here that might be tolerable for concerned individuals advocating age-appropriate dance are the streetdancing ones. Costumes are more modest than not. Choreography - of which the routines are often performed on concrete ANYWAY - often doesn't warrant youths to twerk, pose promiscuously, or go grind dancing on each other.
With the founding of Lindy Hop Philippines, I have been heartened since moving to the Cagayan Valley in early 2024 that there are homegrown individuals who are starting to expand the myopic scope of jazz dance from being a ā€œsassy, promiscuousā€ genre to one that conveys a much wider range of characters and moods.
youtube
ā€œBy sharing the rich history of jazz dance, including its roots in African rhythms and its evolution through various cultural influences, educators can help elders understand that jazz dance is a legitimate and respected art form,ā€ Copilot explained, ā€œHighlighting the contributions of pioneers like Frankie Manning and Norma Miller can also emphasize the cultural significance of jazz dance.ā€
ā€œOrganizations can host performances that focus on the artistic and technical aspects of jazz dance, rather than sensationalized or provocative elements. By presenting jazz dance in a respectful and dignified manner, they can help dispel misconceptions about the genre.ā€
ā€œInviting elders to participate in workshops and classes can provide them with firsthand experience of jazz dance. This can help them see the discipline, skill, and creativity involved in the dance form, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding.ā€
ā€œDrawing parallels between jazz dance and traditional Filipino dances can help elders see the cultural value and continuity in jazz dance. Emphasizing shared elements, such as rhythm and community engagement, can create a sense of familiarity and acceptance.ā€
ā€œOrganizations can hold discussions or forums where elders can voice their concerns and have their questions answered by knowledgeable instructors and dancers. This open dialogue can help address any misconceptions and build trust. Featuring Filipino jazz dancers and instructors as role models can inspire elders and show them that jazz dance is a respectable and valuable art form within their own community.ā€
ā€œSeeing local examples can help change perceptions and encourage acceptance.ā€
youtube
As for my stateside hypersexualization-in-dance-education-jaded mga kaibigan, DA:NCE Awareness unveiled a directory around the time Lindy Hop Philippines was established. Itā€™s called ā€“ without a doubt ā€“ the Healthy DA:NCE Directory. In 2024, the first studios listed were located in the USA and Canada.
Hopefully more studios around the world will be annexed to the Healthy DA:NCE Directory in the next few years, especially those located in Australia. (Remember the RG Dance scandal?)
Given the high Catholic influence and marked emphasis on family values, the Philippines has a marvelous potential to harbor studios that are ripe to be included in the Healthy DA:NCE Directory. May St. Vitus pray that the government eases visa restrictions so that foreign teachers who value healthy dance education and age-appropriate dance for youth can relocate here.
May he pray that Lindy Hop Philippines ā€“ which is based in the NCR ā€“ will inspire my mga kaibigan all over the 7K-plus island archipelago to see jazz dance beyond tricks and promiscuity AND educate them fully about the genre; the iconic figures (BOTH Caucasian AND non-Caucasian); and age-appropriate styles of it.

Introducing my 4th sona, Saiyo!!
She is a fierce and intense dancer, but outside of performance she is warm and fuzzy (in more ways than one). She's based off my background of streetdance, and when I get a fursuit of her one day I'd love to dive back into dance and perform! ^^
'Saiyo' is based off the word 'Sayaw', a Tagalog word meaning "dance". Moreover, 'Saiyo' can be broken into 'Sa iyo' which is Tagalog for "to you". Put together, you could say her name means "Dance to you". Being Filipino, I like to find cute silly ways to try to honour my background. However, it is also just a nice name LMAO

And now, the goobers... TOGETHER!!!!!

JM is also atheist I think. is of another religion: I had a classmate in high school who I heard quietly converted to Buddhism, but I was never close with her so I donā€™t know if that is true, and if she still is. I havenā€™t seen her since we graduated. has brown eyes: My sister probably has the brownest eyes out of all of us, but itā€™s still quite a dark shade.

Not sure how old she is but sheā€™s definitely between 30-40. is a morning person: My mom. She hasnā€™t said anything about it since then so I dunno if they broke it off or nah.

Her husband died from cancer a few years ago when their daughter and I were in high school, if I remember right. is pregnant: My class adviser from senior year in high school. She had them cut off last week, so now sheā€™s back to having black hair. has natural red hair: No one I know. has black hair: Aya. has their hair dyed an unnatural color: Everyone I know who has unnaturally-colored hair had it dyed, because Filipinos only have black hair unless theyā€™re half-something. is good at singing: Hannah is a born superstar tbh. Up until now, I donā€™t know how I got into College Filipino when Iā€™m pretty sure my Filipino skills are for basic filipino. Iā€™m in College Filipino II this coming sem and Iā€™m honestly scared of how itā€™s going to be under that prof. Iā€™ve heard how much of a terror/horrible prof they are. It just takes a strong punch to how low my self esteem is when it comes to writing in my mother tongue(goddammit grammar) which is even more shameful considering that itā€™s my mother tongue.
English on the other hand, I was in basic English last sem and now Iā€™m in College English. Again, Iā€™m deadass insecure of my writing(why do I still rp when my writing is dick shit) and my friends are all advanced/writers that when theyā€™re willing to help me out I shy away because AHAHA I AM SHIT WHAT THE FUCK MAN. I mean, Iā€™m all for challenges but christ, Filipino and English were my favorite subjects in high school. Now that Iā€™m having a hard time in those two subjectsā€¦ I feel so dumb.
Mathā€¦ okay maybe math during the first sem was bearable but now Iā€™m in the second sem.. all I hear are horror stories about my prof that Iā€™m lowkey stressed. Heā€™s apparently a strict professor but hearing that the highest he has given was a C+??? Itā€™s bad enough I feel like a failure still to my parents.. if they see thatā€¦.ahahaha I can sense another relapse.
I want Physics for my natsci subject this sem to be honest. Yet, the P.E that I want ā€“street dancing or break dancing; isnā€™t available for me at all. My schedule clashes with the two dances that Iā€™m looking for ways to get both (answer: I might have to take Environmental Science if I want to get a dance related P.E).
Which leads me to my last mood drop bullshit; dance. By the first sem of SY 2017-2018, my orgā€™s going to prep for the dance competition once more. We have auditions for it and Iā€™m deadass scared I wonā€™t make it. I have so little experience with dancing that if more people join the org especially that sub orgā€¦ Iā€™m scared that I wonā€™t make the cut. Being able to stand on stage was worth all the stress and breakdowns Iā€™ve had that lead up to that point. The others who had very little experience improved at such a fast rate, I felt stagnant. It felt like everyone was improving but me and I hated it. At least we have training this semester but the streetdance or breakdance wouldā€™ve helped me so much more.
Iā€™m so scared of whatā€™s to come this semester. I want to get honors at the very least but at this pointā€¦ it seems so unlikely.
Edit: Also I'm done with how my friend doesn't seem to listen when I call him out on his mannerisms/koreaboo-ness. I lowkey felt worse when he pointed out that my pronounciations sounded so american? At least, I try to make sure my tenses/spelling and pronounciation is right but you? You're starting to use it to just act cute and be like those cute lead girls in dramas that it pisses me off. This isn't the first time things I've told him fly above his head and it's slowly getting to me...
