The Spanish surnames of many Filipinos have often misled foreigners here and abroad, who are unaware of the decree on the adoption of surnames issued by Governor-General Narciso Clavería in 1849. Until quite recently in the United States, the Filipinos were classified in demographic statistics as a “Spanish-speaking minority,” along with Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Mexicans, and other nationals of the Central or South American republics. The Philippines, as is well known, was a Spanish colony when Spain was mistress of empires in the Western Hemisphere; but the Americans were “hispanized” demographically, culturally, and linguistically, in a way the Philippines never was. Yet the Spanish surnames of the Filipinos today—García, Gómez, Gutiérrez, Fernández—seem to confirm the impression of the American statistician, as well as of the American tourist, that the Philippines is just another Mexico in Asia. Nor is this misunderstanding confined to the United States; most Spaniards still tend to think of “las Islas Filipinas” as a country united to them through the language of Cervantes, and they catalogue Philippine studies under “Hispano-America.” The fact is that after nearly three-and-a-half centuries of Spanish rule probably not more than one Filipino in ten spoke Spanish, and today scarcely one in fifty does. Still the illusion lives on, thanks in large part to these surnames, which apparently reflect descent from ancient Peninsular forbears, but in reality often date back no farther than this decree of 1849.

Somehow overlooked, this decree, with the Catálogo Alfabético de Apellidos which accompanied it, accounts for another curiousity which often intrigues both Filipinos and foreign visitors alike, namely, that there are towns in which all the surnames of the people begin with the same letter. This is easily verifiable today in many parts of the country. For example, in the Bikol region, the entire alphabet is laid out like a garland over the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon, and Catanduanes which in 1849 belonged to the single jurisdiction of Albay. Beginning with A at the provincial capital, the letters B and C mark the towns along the coast beyond Tabaco to Tiwi. We return and trace along the coast of Sorsogon the letters E to L; then starting down the Iraya Valley at Daraga with M, we stop with S to Polangui and Libon, and finish the alphabet with a quick tour around the island of Catan-duanes. Today’s lists of municipal officials, memorials to local heroes, even business or telephone directories, also show that towns where family names begin with a single letter are not uncommon. In as, for example, the letter R is so prevalent that besides the Roas, Reburianos, Rebajantes, etc., some claim with tongue in cheek that the town also produced Romuáldez, Rizal, and Roosevelt!

𖧷 It was a normal Saturday at his place as the Filipina visited Sugawara. With a peck to the back of her hand, he stood up from the most comfortable place in the bed (beside her) and excused himself to the washroom.

To his surprise and confusion, a foreign tune was playing once returned to his room. Sounds oddly familiar but he isn't entirely sure where, Sugawara concludes that it could be music that his girlfriend listens to.

Her phone was set up in front of a stack of his book on top his desk, the screen showing the recording was on.

As the music played, her dancing grew all the more intense, going as far as kneeling down to the floor and rolling her body to the rhythm. Sugawara, in amusement, watched leaning by his doorframe tapping his feet to the beat.

Only when she ended the recording did he make his presence known.

"Mahal¹, what dance were you doing?" The Filipina jumped, "Hala!² Did you see everything?" Sugawara laughed loudly as he walked to her. "Sorryyy." he stopped in front of her, gently pulling her back to his bed. The girl chuckled, "I was dancing budots."

"Who were you going to send that video to, hm?"

"Just my friends in the Philippines, they wanted to do a trend.", the girl smiles, proceeding to give more details about what her friends asked her to do.

The Filipina shifts from beside Sugawara to laying her chin on his chest, "So, what do you think of the dance?". He tucked a loose hair behind her ear with a smile, "You did amazing, mahal."

"Although...", he sighed dramatically. The girl rose a brow, "Although?"

"I wished that dance was reserved for a private audience. Maybe just for me?", he teased, his eyebrows wiggling up and down. Causing the girl that laid in his arms to hit him on his chest. "Baliw ka!³ "

"You know after seeing you dance, I finally understood why Tanaka and Noya go that crazy over a girl."

Jungkook remind me of another very famous Asian artist, Leslie Cheung.

Leslie was a very famous actor and singer. He remains one of the most celebrated artists in China, 19 years after his death. He was also openly bi.

His film "Happy Together" is one of the earliest films in Asia to deal with a gay relationship.

Jungkook doesnt really resemble him physically but I do think their appeal/aura kinda similar?

Like they both have/had a very soft, yet powerful masculine appeal. Their masculinity is not threatening yet very palpable and inciting instead of repelling. Dunno how to describe this any other way.

So sorry, I took so long to respond to this but I don't get many messages like this and I wanted to take time replying and try to do justice to what you are saying here. I have been reading more about Leslie Cheung his life and his legacy and in so doing I begin to see where the comparisons you make to Jungkook come from.

I remember Leslie Cheung for his performance in the 1993 film Farewell My Concubine. The film won the Palm D'Or at Cannes as well as awards for Best Foreign Language Film at the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes. He plays Cheng Dieyi, a Peking opera singer, abandoned and abused as a child and trained to sing the opera's female roles. The film focuses on his tumultuous lifelong relationship with fellow opera singer Duan Xiaolou and Xiaolou's wife Juxian. It is set against the massive societal upheaval in China in the early 20th century. It's a heartbreaking performance which reminds us of the fragility of love and friendship and the lasting effects betrayal can have upon us all.

What I didn't know when I saw the film, was anything more about his life. His singing career, his huge celebrity in Asia and the fact that he was an openly bisexual man at a time where globally, attitudes towards homosexuality were at their most negative.

I also wasn't aware of the role he played in shaping LGBT representation in Hong Kong cinema and the lasting impact that this has had on subsequent queer films and filmmakers which is perhaps best embodied by the 1997 film Happy Together which you mention.

I have complicated feelings about the COD fandom fetishizing “barracks bunny” because of the sexual violence that women in the military face.

LaVena Johnson, Ana Basaldua Ruiz, Vanessa Guillen, countless other unnamed women. All of these soldiers were murdered or “committed suicide” after being raped/sexually assaulted/sexually harassed in the military.

The barracks bunny stereotype is a violently, murderously misogynistic stereotype that gets women killed.

And not just women in the military - wherever troops go, sexual violence, trafficking, and femicide increase.

A Marine at Camp Pendleton abducted a 14 year old Indigenous girl after purchasing her from an unnamed pimp and keeping her in the barracks to rape her! He kept her on that base for 24 hours before she was rescued and last week was charged with sexual assault. Military bases are highly guarded places. How would he have been able to keep a child in the barracks to rape without the knowledge and collusion of his fellow soldiers?

Indigenous women and girls go missing and are found murdered at astronomically high rates because of racism, colonialism, and systemic abuse of Indigenous women/girls under both of those things.

The objectification and fetishization of Asian women by Western men is the direct result of Western militaries sex trafficking Asian women and girls in Asia before/during/after WW2 and forcing them into prostitution. Once these Asian women had been forced into prostitution, they had no other choice but to keep doing that and as time went on, this created a sex tourism industry in Asia specifically for foreign white men.

In some cases, Western soldiers even took over the disgusting sex slavery camps the Japanese military enslaved Korean women/girls in during WW2 and kept those women imprisoned to serve the Western soldiers who were there to “liberate” them.

I could write a whole separate post about the sexual violence experienced by women and girls in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and other places in the Middle East at the hands of Western soldiers. That wasn’t very long ago and it’s still going on today! We remember!

A former Philippine mayor who was on the run for weeks after being accused of spying for China has been arrested in Indonesia.

Philippine authorities have been pursuing Alice Guo across four countries since she disappeared in July following an investigation into her alleged criminal activities.

She has been accused of protecting online casinos, which were a front for scam centres and human trafficking syndicates in her sleepy pig farming town, Bamban.

Ms Guo denies the allegations. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said she would be flown back to the Philippines as early as Wednesday.

She said she grew up on the family farm with her Chinese father and Filipina mother, but MPs who investigated the scam centre operations said her fingerprints matched a Chinese national named Guo Hua Ping and accused her of being a spy who provided cover for criminal gangs.

The dramatic nature of her case, which has since seen her sister arrested and questioned by the Philippine Senate, sparked fury in the country and drew international attention.

Ms Guo's case has played out as the Philippines and China continue to spar over reefs and outcrops in the South China Sea.

China has not commented on the allegations against her.

Authorities believe that Ms Guo slipped past border checks in July and took several boats, crossing neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore, on her way to Indonesia, where she was arrested on Tuesday on the western border of the capital Jakarta.

Mr Marcos said her arrest is "a warning to those who attempt to evade justice".

"Such is an exercise in futility. The arm of the law is long and it will reach you," he wrote on Facebook.

Photos showed Ms Guo wearing light pink pyjamas and a white coat when she was arrested.

A scam centre in a sleepy town

Ms Guo was thrust under the national spotlight after authorities in March uncovered a sprawling scam centre in Bamban that were hiding under online casinos, known locally as Philippine Online Gaming Operations (Pogo).

Pogos cater to clients in the Chinese mainland, where gambling is illegal.

Ms Guo's case confirmed suspicions that Pogos were being used as a front for organised crime and led to Mr Marcos outlawing them in response to public anger.

Pogos flourished under his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte, whose presidency was marked by close ties with China.

But Mr Marcos reversed the country's foreign policy direction and has cracked down on Pogo-linked crimes since assuming office in 2022.

During the raid in Ms Guo's town, police rescued close to 700 scam centre workers, including 202 Chinese nationals and 73 other foreigners who were forced to pose as online lovers.

A Senate investigation that followed centred on her inability to detect the eight-hectare scam centre despite its location near her office.

Senators also grilled her on her parentage. A relative unknown in local politics, she was elected mayor on her first run for public office, which is rare in areas ruled by political families.

Ms Guo's opaque answers on questions regarding her roots, led some senators to accuse her of being a Chinese "asset" or spy.

She gave a television interview where she attributed her low profile to being her father's illegitimate child with her mum, who is also his maid. She said this forced her to lead a sheltered life in the family farm, until she was elected mayor of Bamban.

But the controversy did not subside and after she refused to appear in subsequent hearings, senators in July ordered her arrest. By that time, however, she had fallen from public view.

Soon after, an anti-graft body removed her from office.

In August, Filipino authorities said she had fled the country undetected and passed through Singapore and Malaysia on her way to Indonesia.

One official said she could be headed for the Golden Triangle, a border region in mainland South East Asia that is a known hideout of organised crime groups.

A furious Mr Marcos then ordered her Philippine passport cancelled and warned then that "heads will roll".

He said Ms Guo's escape "laid bare the corruption that undermines our justice system and erodes the people's trust".

Description:

She is a 5 '9 ft. woman with long blueberry-black hair tied in a low-loose ponytail with small blunt bangs with side curled locks,cherry pink lips,pink eye shadows and red eyeliner. She also had gentle doe light brown eyes and pale skin,due to she never goes out much as she used to.she also had a scar on her nose bridge that she had for a long time.

She is described to be an incredibly beautiful girl despite the visible scar on her face and was told to have really good figure-(well-endowed) for someone her age-(by the Sverchtz Sisters)

Background:

Not much is known about her, aside from the fact she is a foreigner who came to the City for a job. She was given a doorman job by the D.D.D as she was scouted by them after a year adjusting in the city,ironically she actually lives in the same apartment as the rest of the Neighbors does.

Before The Game:

Nobody knew much about her aside from being quiet and reserved. She lives in the 3rd Floor of the building and is the neighbor of the Milkman(Francis Mosses).

Her relationship with the neighbors isn't much known but she is close to the Milkman and the Twin Model Sisters.

She was born in the Philippines and moved to Japan before leaving abroad to start a new life. She was born around 1930,she had gained the scar years ago when before she went abroad and had her first encounter with a Doppelganger that she managed to kill, hence the scar on her face.

She had a family but she doesn't talk to them much due to the circumstances but she always gets updates on their wellbeing.

Her Lore (Will Be Updated):

When she was young,she had her first encounter with a Doppelganger after they suddenly raided her village in the Philippines.

However through smart tactics she managed to survive on her own when she was separated from her family when they all evacuated the village afterward.

However, because this occurred when she was only around 10-11 yrs.old, she was alone and scared but with a sheer will she was able to survive for a while,hiding,scouting and what not-

That was until she came face to face with a Doppelganger who slowly took her form however,seeing this she immediately took her chance and killed the doppelganger while gaining a scar, switching their clothes before she escaped the village completely so the other doppelgangers believed she was dead.

She was eventually reunited with her family but they had to move to Japan for safety purposes.

Over the years passed,when she was in her early 20's she was now able to leave abroad and study for 2-3 years until she graduated and finally was able to land herself a job as a doorman.

Her mother was a Filipina that went abroad to Japan and met her father there back then.

Personality:

Quiet, reserved and aloof. Mayari is always silent most of the time and never spoke too much,she always wore a blank exterior and people couldn't really tell what she is thinking about as she makes it harder,even for the smarter ones and Doppelgangers to read her easily.

She is paranoid,withdrawn and always keeps to herself as she doesn't socialize much aside from a few people.She is known to be kind and thoughtful to others whenever she can as she is altruistic and empathetic.

However, there's instances where she is shown to be quick witted and cunning as well as keenly observant around her surroundings due to the ongoing circumstances of doppelgangers,driven by survival she slowly grew more tactical and strategic to ensure her survival for another day.

But even with all that,she is actually bubbly and very sweet once she was able to trust others. She also knows how to gain others' trust for the beneficiary of the two or more parties.

But she is also mildly oblivious around certain topics or signs-(romantic ones,she will get there eventually)

While it was not implied,it is stated she had a huge crush on the Milkman.

Both met 3 years ago after moving into the apartment on the 3rd floor and became Francis' neighbor. She and him were just strangers at first but Francis helped her feel at least welcome around the place and she generally grew to like him. Both became close friends, although she always heard rumors that he was a divorcee and frankly he did confirmed he was indeed married previously but due the ongoing issues about the doppelgangers had caused a rift between him and his wife as trust are strained leading up to their divorce soon after-

The Twin Model Sisters (Elenoise and Selenne Sverchtz)

Mayari met the sisters when she first decided to do an inspection around each floor,she came across the two in the hallway and they were immediately taken in by her beauty.Selenne and Elenoise are upcoming modelers,making sure they kept up with their beauty and what not but Mayari had a natural beauty on her that doesn't require any makeup that much,the sisters are awe by her natural beauty,this is the start of her odd friendship with the Sverchtz Sisters.

Not practically close but Mayari and Ms.Bubbles would be seen talking a lot as Mayari would ask for help from Ms.Bubbles regarding her dress or materials. Ms.Bubbles liked that despite how withdrawn Mayari sometimes was,she was an easygoing and soft-spoken girl who sometimes didn't mind helping her out in the goodness of her heart and in return,Mayari would do the same.

Nacha and Anastacha Mikaelys (Ex-Wife Of Francis Mosses & his Daughter)

She never talked to them much but she had a cordial relationship with them as Anastacha was aware of Mayari's friendship with her Ex-husband,Nacha and Mayari didn't talk much as well but get along enough to be comfortable with each other and there's a time Mayari would check up on them for Francis.

Despite her timid yet bubbly nature,she was someone never to be messed with as she trained herself in combat due to her circumstances in her past.

The Speedster Parents, particularly Bonn and Rita Speedster are now 7 years of appearance since their inception. To this day, Bonn and Rita are still labeled as 'Mentors' to their Speedster Kids (Spot and Riya). As for their bios, they're both old and forgotten. So, let's refresh their biography information because things change for Bonn and Rita.

Name: Bonn "The Spot" Speedster 🐰🚹 Age: 35 Gender: Male Species: Puppy-Bunny Color fur: Blue w/ dark spots Nationality: American 🇺🇸

Information: • Bonn "The Spot" Speedster is a blue-dog hybrid creature, who won numerous motorsport titles in his resume of accolades, from reigning 8-time race kart champion at the age of 12, to pro-stock car racing (3 times), to world rally championship (2 times), to F1 world champion (1 time), and even drift car championship (1 time). He's currently signed as the Le Mans Hyper Car Racer for the World Endurance Championship and has a part-time boxer career with his boxing license. Bonn is also a great athlete who always loves to shape up in the morning with his wife. He'd also been the owner of the "Bonn's Auto Customs Shop and Repair" established in 2011, the same year as Spot and Riya was born.

Other interest: Watching Anime and Cartoons (depends, especially adult-rated cartoons), loves pet bunny rabbits (all kinds of breed), playing video games, tuning/fixing automobiles, and gadgets.

Fun fact for Bonn: Bonn was idolized with the former Boxer and Philippine Senator, Manny Pacquiao (among other well-known iconic and respective Boxers, both legend and veterans). Even though, Bonn was a pure American blood, he always respect at Philippine foreigners, including his wife Rita.

Name: Rita Frias Speedster 🐶🚺 Age: 35 Gender: Female Species: Puppy-Cat Color: Light Magenta Nationality: Dual Citizen; Filipina 🇵🇭 (Philippine Citizen) and American 🇺🇸

Information: • Rita Frias Speedster is a Magenta puppy-cat hybrid who migrated to the United States as an OFW, which stands for "Overseas Filipina Worker" (For male "Filipino"). She's an Olympian sprinter who represents the Philippines at the Summer Olympics, and she takes home two silver medals, at the age of 20 & 24. At 25, she became a teacher/coach of the sprint runner before she retired at 30, and switched to a professional biker (who won 3 times at the superbike championship and won 5 times at the motocross championship on her resume) and a part-time MMA fighter. She holds two careers, to this day.

Other interest: Learning Philippine-related cultures such as language, food, and others to their foreign neighborhoods (e.g. Americans, Latin Americans, etc.), loves pet dogs (all kinds of breed), adventuring nature landscapes, riding bikes.

Fun fact for Rita: At age of 16, she used to ride motor tricycles, while on her sprint training break. The motor tricycle was inherited from her late father, and to this day, it is still operational by her numerous family members.

“Nancy,” a controversial cable “news” hostess taking some time off from the heat, and notoriety, of being herself by spending three weeks on a small Philippine Island as a Filipina.

“Jimmy,” the son of a prominent Kentucky politician, here seen during his six-week tour as a female citizen of Seoul, Korea, where before his return to Frankfort, Kentucky as football hero Jimmy, she was able to get a brief part on a Korean drama.

(she tried to bribe Global Immersive into her “accidentally,” not being able to turn back and losing the paperwork on where she is. Sorry, but GITAO doesn’t play that! Get a good lawyer, honey.

Such as Susan Billie Abbot a highly accomplished journalist and finance graduate from Brown University. Who after graduating in 2013, she began her career in journalism and finance, first as a financial analyst at JP Morgan & Co. in New York City. Here she is finding out that after her three week fact finding tour she is one of the sort of people who can not turn back and must keep the new identity she was using (to be truthful we are not really all that “legal” and if government found out what we are doing the results would be dire for all involved) so that Susan Billie Abbot, American finance reporter, is now truly Syazana Binti Zainal Abidin, Mayla woman and citizen of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Fortunately GITAO was able to see to it that Syazana had to paperwork to get work at the largest bank in Kuala Lumpur, as a teller. But we are sure a go-getter like Ms. Abidin will be moving up in the ranks swiftly.

Now that this study will continue for the rest of her life, at least Phuong finds that tuition is much less expensive where she is now.

June “Rosebud” Flowers of McComb, Mississippi, thought that if she could spend a little time “over there” as “one of them” “walking a mile  in their burka.” She would be able to take her Witnessing up two or three notches. However, she had not anticipated finding she had to stay in Istanbul as Haziran “Gül Goncası” Çiçekler for keeps or that she would be the one converting.

An interesting double-stuck pair of travelers is a would-be female rocker who uses a secondary color as her stage name (No, NOT Pink!”) who thought that a trip into India as an Indian woman would help her music even more than the Beatles trips to India as just themselves helped them  (nobody tell her). 

She was joined on what she thought would be a three-week tour by her show business manager Murry who was so dedicated to his client that he also agreed to not only take the change with her but also become a woman so they could save on hotel bills by staying in the same one as mother and daughter.

Mauve is doing her best to find where Indian music today “is” while Murry, well Murry, is adjusting as best she can.

Facts:

Petitioner Wolfgang O. Roehr (A German Citizen) married Maria Carmen D. Rodriguez (A Filipina) on December 11, 1980, and their marriage was later ratified in the Philippines.

They had two children during their marriage.

In August 1996, Rodriguez filed a petition for the declaration of nullity of their marriage.

On December 16, 1997, Roehr obtained a divorce decree from a German Court.

Based on the divorce decree, Roehr filed a motion to dismiss the case in the Philippine RTC.

The RTC initially granted the motion to dismiss but later partially set aside its order to resolve issues related to property settlement and child custody, despite the divorce decree.

Issues:

Whether the trial Judge gravely abused discretion by partially modifying the earlier order.

Whether the trial Judge has Jurisdiction to retain the case, considering the foreign divorce decree.

Held:

The trial Judge did not gravely abuse her discretion by partially modifying the earlier order. The rules of Civil Code procedure allow for partial reconsideration, especially when the original judgment has not yet attained finality.

The trial judge had jurisdiction to retain the case to determine issues regarding child custody, care, support and education. However, she lacked jurisdiction to resolved property relations since both parties admitted in their pleadings that there was no property to account for.
