that final was amazing. sunisa lee is a fighter, rebeca andrade is an icon and simone biles is simply the goat. all three captivating and unique in their own way. such a deserved podium. i loved it!!!!!!!!
special mention to portuguese gymnast filipa martins who made history for our country for being the first female gymnast to reach an olympic all around final. she finished in 20th, not improving her qualification place of 15th, but it was already a triumph to be there and compete in such an event with such competitors. parabéns filipa!!
#olympics#sports is amazing bc it can make adrenaline run through ur veins and be massively cathartic#I LOVE SPORTS

2012 - semifinal 2
originally posted 6/10/20
Serbia The instrumental on this is gorgeous, I really love the violins, and I think Serbia actually did a pretty good job with the staging here. Like it's not perfect but as I said before 2012 is a really rough year for staging. The vocal line is pretty boring until about halfway through the song so this isn't a huge standout favorite for me but compared to many other 2012 songs this is good. Macedonia Mmm, I really love this song... that scream is so iconic but also it works with the song you know? It's very pretty at the beginning but once the rock section kicks in in the second verse this song catapults to GREAT. Kaliopi is performing really well and this is such a good song for her, and actually the staging here is one of very few staging concepts that didn't make the stage seem enormous just because of the camera shots and the way everything was set up.
Netherlands Instrumental isn't bad but this performance loses major points from me because of... well, the disrespectful costume choices. Also Joan's voice isn't anything close to enjoyable to listen to. This is the dark side of Dutch country... like I think this is maybe the worst it can get. Malta This is pretty tacky, standard late oughts-early teens ESC, but Kurt's weird little stage performance is endearing. There is nothing that I fully hate about this - it's not quality music by any means but it does make me smile. Belarus A little clumsy, but there are parts of this that I do enjoy. That chorus is one of them, it's not incredibly strong but it's catchy, idk it just sounds nice. I also really like the staging concept, I don't know if it's cyberpunk or steampunk or what, just techno... something... punk and I just love it. Portugal This song fails to evoke any emotion in me. Like okay Filipa is a good singer I guess but the song and performance gives me no feelings whatsoever. I think I'm just gonna leave it at that.
Ukraine Umm, it's okay. I really like the horn melody that shows up during the choruses but the rest of the song, Gaitana included, is annoying more than it is anything else. Gaitana does have a really good voice and that stands out especially in the beginning but imo the song kinda goes downhill from there. Bulgaria On the whole, Love Unlimited is another OK song absolutely murdered by the 2012 stage design. Sofi does get kind of off the instrumental at certain points, there's bits where she's really out of time with it and that also puts me off the performance a little bit. Chorus is really catchy though. Slovenia Killed by the staging again. I also feel like they concentrated too much on that one backup singer. Like, this is billed as being Eva's song, keep the focus on her unless the backing singers are advancing the stage's "story" in any way - which they really weren't, they were just there to sing behind Eva and that's it. This is a nice song with a good singer and a strong chorus but it is also fundamentally very meaningless.
Croatia I remember having enjoyed this, but I feel like it kind of let me down this time around. It sounds nice, but it's not impressive on any counts, and the song doesn't super go anywhere. Sweden Euphoria changed the game in a lot of ways. It firstly was just a really good song, modern for its time and really well-produced, that both solidified G:son's reputation and showed off Loreen's awesome vocals. One of the big reasons why it won, though, is the staging. Euphoria's performance never ever showed the audience, and only showed the huge scope of that stage once, and even then it was from above and was narratively interesting relative to the song. Loreen is one of the only 2012 artists who didn't look tiny relative to that gargantuan stage and I feel like that really lent a lot to this performance. Without that staging this performance could have been very bad.
Georgia I enjoy this song for what it is. It's really catchy in a way, the chorus is fun to bop along to and Anri has a really good voice and is performing pretty well. The staging sure is interesting but you know what? It leaned into being weird and I guess I respect that. Turkey I detest this song. This is probably one of my least favorite ESC songs ever. I hate Can's voice, I don't know what's happening in terms of the song itself, and I'm incredibly confused by the man boat. Estonia This is really just beautiful. Kuula as a song is... for some reason, majestic is the word that comes to mind, and the staging was simple and graceful and put all of the focus on Ott's incredible voice and the lovely song. Slovakia I dislike this style of music pretty strongly and especially don't enjoy it in Eurovision. Moving on.
Norway Tooji really gets bonus points for his energy. He's giving his all onstage and tbh I'm shocked he isn't out of breath for like half the song. Stay is trashy club schlager music but it's catchy as hell and I just enjoy it. It's not, like, a beautiful or incredibly well-composed song or anything like that but dammit it's fun! Bosnia & Herzegovina Korake Ti Znam bores me to tears. It isn't objectively horrible the way some other songs in 2012 are, and it's even a style of music that's palatable to me, but this particular song, and singer, and performance just aren't my thing. Lithuania Donny Montell is just... he's a performer. The one-handed cartwheel, the air guitar, his expressions and emotion onstage? I love it all. He really makes this performance - like, Love Is Blind is an OK song and all, but I genuinely like this performance because of Donny.
My personal qualifiers Sweden Estonia North Macedonia Serbia Malta Belarus Norway Lithuania Bulgaria Slovenia
Miscellaneous thoughts I like that the hosts went out of their way to thank the crew, I feel like that doesn't get done enough. The hosts are also using a relatively large amount of French? I'm lowkey impressed, most Western countries don't try that hard with the French. My opinion on these hosts is that they're actually pretty funny? Like they had a half-decent script and the jokes ("is there a lawyer? oh yes, Nargiz", "so who has to do it in French this time", etc) are genuinely good, I just feel like none of them spoke English quite well enough to get the timing down and the humor across. I feel like maybe I've misjudged them a little... they really are trying their best. This interval act with the past winners was pretty good but I just can't get over how drunk Dima Bilan is omg. Also, Rybak and Marija Serifovic really seem to be having fun with each other, lovely to see that some of the past winners are actually friends.

Seoul Reflections
Final spurt for the inaugural Seoul Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism which will close on November 5th and time for an appraisal by Jason Hilgefort who participated in the event (Disclosure: as did Christian Burkhard, this website’s editor). But here is Jason:
Zaha Hadid’s DDP, the venue for the Biennale’s Cities Exhibition
To start off it must be stated that the Seoul Biennale is extremely impressive in its shear ambition. For a first time biennale its scope, goals, vision, actions upon the city, attempt to engage citizens is wildly far reaching. This is in part a credit to its currently governmental realities. The city itself has recently put in motion a series of very large gestures throughout its urban landscape and this is just its latest project on/in the city.
Playing the city (in Zaha Hadid’s DDP)
In relation to these governmental goals, the site selection itself is of note. The ‘exhibition’ was spread into three ‘sites’ throughout the city. Perhaps the most obvious and iconic space is the Cities Exhibition, which was located within the Zaha Hadid designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza [DDP] – curated by Helen Hejung Choi. With a twisting, ramping space wrapping around a central open void that was subdivided into a bazaar-like marketplace of ideas, the spatial experience was memorable to say the least. And it was an astute curatorial solution to the non-standard, challenging formal reality of the venue. The whole of the looping series of quick hit installations along the swooping ramp in many ways stood out spatially.
Exhibits on the ramp of the DDP in the Cities Exhbition
However it was the exhibition on Pyongyang, North Korea by Dongwoo Yim and Calvin Chua stole the show. The painstakingly recreated one to one installation of the reality of an apartment in the communist city alongside the series of drawings, statistics, and a ‘make your own catalogue’ elements scattered throughout were a showstopper.
Cities Exhibition on Pyongyang, North Korea
Yet quietly the goal of having often ‘non design’ teams set up exhibitions in the space, each on their own city was the true innovation. Seeing each city tell a story from not just architects or design teams gave a diversity and depth of voices to the exhibition often not seen in international biennales.
In contrast, the Donuimun Museum Village was an illustration of adapting a historic quarter in the city to host an international event. And a further differentiation, this vision for ‘The Nine Commons’ (the title of the Biennale’s Thematic Exhibition) focused much more on the technical elements of our built world – featuring the likes of Beatriz Colomina, Philippe Rahm, Tomás Saraceno, and many more dealing with matters like air, fire, and social media.
Impressions from the Thematic Exhibition at Donuimun Museum Village
Although there were many eye catching installs [Beyond Mining Urban Growth by Dirk E. Hebel, Philippe Block mushroom-tastic layered installation must be commended], the one that sticks in my mind is the ’Driverless Vision’ by Urtzi Grau, Guillermo Fernández-Abascal, Daniel Perlin, and Maximilian Lauter.
Driverless Vision exhibit at the Seoul Biennale
It stepped beyond the idea of merely self-driving cars into a hauntingly beautiful dystopian possible future with autonomous vehicles roaming a human-less city; oddly managing to humanise a technical future by removing the humans.
Broadly, much can be said for the value of taking on the hot topic of commons in the current professional discourse and expanding upon it. However, one can also suggest that the exhibition dilutes the topic to be almost everything and perhaps gets lost in the technical implications of a theme that would have been a more ideal medium for engaging the public in urban/architectural issues.
“Do We Dream Under The Same Sky”, exhibit at the Thematic Exhibition
The two main sites (DDP and Museum Village) sit to the east and west of the city centre, in respect to western and eastern historical narratives of the city; as well speak to contemporary global and historical local languages through the built forms of each site. This juggling of new and old is well executed and adds a multi-layered quality to the ideas put forward. But perhaps the most provocative of all was the ‘third site[s]’ of the Live Projects locations, in addition to the looooong and impressive list of public programs throughout the city [tours, forums, films, libraries, international architecture studious, etc]. For myself, the most relevant and more visually iconic of all spaces was the ‘Productive City’ within the Sewoon Sangga mega structure.
The site of Sewoon Sangga with a view to the mountains in the north
This part of the exhibition was an engagement with the existing aging building sitting amidst a on-the-verge-of-changing mixed use industrial area. It was more of an architectural programmatic operation used as a tool for framing a discussion in society. It represents a local action in the city itself and not merely an exhibition of internationally provocative ideas.
Mixed use small scale industrial area next to Sewoon Sangga
Its efficacy will only be able to be judged in the long run, but it relates to similar curatorial goals in the perhaps other most internationally well-known architecture/urbanism biennale in Asia – the Shenzhen/Hong Kong Biennale [of note: the author was a sub-curator]. Because these cities are moving so rapidly, or maybe because they have learned from the ‘showcase’ nature of Venice and other events – they seek to use these exhibitions as a method to work upon and open up the doors for a discourse about the city and the challenges it is facing. Each looks distantly abroad, yet simultaneously zooms in to enable local action.
In closing, I must share an off-the-cuff comment from a friend that still rings in my ear. For all of its far reaching agendas - from international to local, from technical to metropolitan – there exists a gap in the ‘middle’. This biennale of architecture and urbanism doesn’t have much ‘architecture’. In many ways the buildings chosen to exhibit within were the strongest architectural elements [Zaha, old village, modernist mega structure], but were merely the backdrop or frames to the issues explored. It is tough to draw conclusions about what this says about the biennale, Seoul, or the state of our cities. But this void does seem to echo a common passivity toward the discussion of buildings themselves within the profession of architecture. The complexity and possibilities of technology and our cities are alluring and exciting, but perhaps in the pursuit of the ‘interesting’ we miss the tangibility of ‘just a building’ and how it speaks to layered issues of the world today.

Morangos Com Açucar: Cheesy teenage love triangle by the sea.
Theme: Love, school, family, fun, friends.
Duration: 39 minutes.
Audience: Teenagers.
Country: Portugal.
Year of release: 2003.
Genre: Comedy.
Original channel: TVI.
Language I saw it in: Portuguese.
Characters: Pipo a teenage boy and his younger siblings. Joana a teenage girl her family and her friends at school. Ricardo her ex-boyfriend.
What’s interesting in this novela: Many of Portugal’s famous tv actors/ hosts come from this show (Filomena Cautela, Filipa Areosa, Carolina Loureiro). It’s an iconic early 2000s show that has had a phenomenal local success. It was even reason of a national scandal, as the show was quite liberal and was first to display sex and drugs to youngsters on portuguese tv.
Resume of the pilot: Cascais, a city by the sea, close to Lisbon where the sun shines and rich people live with their families.
It’s Joana’s birthday, she’s 17, she’s cute, she’s blonde and in love. Her parents bore her, her father is an idiot that flirts with her girlfriends... As her family and friends celebrate her, Joana only has one thing in her mind finding her boyfriend Ricardo whom she hasn’t seen eversince the party started. She decides to go and look for him, only to find him kissing another girl on her parent’s property.
Desperate and overreacting Joana, leaves her own birthday party and attempts to drown herself in the ocean. Thankfully, Pipo - a sexy young guy that was skinny dipping in the ocean (in the middle of the afternoon) saw her getting in the water and saved her. They fall for each other but Pipo has to run away (butt-naked) as Ricardo interrupts them. Cut to - It’s the first day of school and Pipo is a new student in Cascais’ high school (his parents died in Porto and left him and his siblings orphan which led them to move to Cascais). He meets Ricardo who turns out to be an old friend of a friend, the two bond. Later that day he sees Joana and they both exchange on their romantic first encounter.
The episode ends on them having spent the night together at the beach after class.
My thoughts: •An outdated series. From the storytelling to the filming technique and the editing everything in this series is SO outdated. It’s truly hard not to take into account all the “modern effects” that were used to aim at the young audience. Even the typo of the title looks old and cheap.
•Very basic characters that are just vaguely put in the context of their environment. The storyline doesn’t really present the characters in depth. We sort of understand Pipo’s story in a very artificial conversation he has with his siblings. We don’t quite understand who is Joana, or her friends and family. It all seems like a caricature of spoiled kids that go to classes on their cool scooters, and that spend their afternoons at the beach. Pipo and a new math teacher are the outsiders that integrate this high school way of life.
•So bad it’s good. I truly had a good laugh seeing scenes as the one I screen-shotted above. The series lasted 9 seasons. Each season had a new generation of characters. I know it hooked many young portuguese teens/ pre-teens, so i’m guessing if I were an adolescent I could perhaps get the charm of this love triangle (other than Pipo’s buttcheeks on screen).
Funny, but I’m just not that into it... Slap!
