One Dress a Day Challenge
July: Green Redux (+ Blue Redux)
Ivanhoe / Lysette Anthony as Lady Rowena
Return of the Ren Faire! The big pearl beads are like something out of The Court Jester, but at least that movie had the excuse of not even pretending to be period-accurate.
I really do love this movie's costumes out of all proportion to what they frankly deserve. I guess I was just at an impressionable age when i saw this movie/miniseries. Plus, it's just so obvious that the costumers are doing their best on what must have been a miniscule budget, bless their hearts. I just want to hug them and pat them on their heads.

Marina Reviewed in the United States on January 5, I stopped watching american shows and now only do british they are so much better and the Cheat is a good example of this, the story is interesting, the actors are superb, really enjoyed this. Helpful Report abuse. This four episode UK miniseries, had a good idea for a plot, but Cheat ultimately suffers from spoiler scenes which are completely unnecessary, then the rest of the episodes are a flashback, and a very lazy ending, that was something out of a cheaply made TV movie with writers who just don't know how to wrap up things any other way. If they'd completely left both those things out this would of been a great show. They also tried to make it more complicated, with unnecessary twists, when the simple original one of them, getting vengeance on the other, but which one is actually doing it plot, was sufficient enough. So what's Cheat about? A university lecturer accuses one of her students of cheating. Well even though Rose asks Leah outright if she accusing her of cheating, and she says no, but then the next moment she's reporting her for cheating. Understandably Rose isn't impressed by Leah's behaviour and asks the dean or whoever the woman was if she can talk to her in private, where she reveals something Leah was doing in one of the bathrooms. Leah is now understandably annoyed at Rose so decides she'll humiliate her in the next lecture. This obviously escalates the anger from Rose's point of view. Leah then starts to accuse Rose of all kinds of things. Did Rose do these things? Is Leah just maybe paranoid or perhaps mentally losing it and these things even happening. Or is Leah just making it all up to frame and get vengeance against Rose? If you watch this series with plenty of time between episodes, I doubt that it will make much of an impact, because you will find the imperfections in the story. Binge watch it instead, and it will be far more enjoyable and gripping. Enjoyed the story and the suspense. Appreciated the creativity in the stalking element. Not your typical stalking story-line. I heard about this show in a review which stated that ,at 4 episodes, "it was perfect for binge watching". I have Sundance Channel on my home tv, but I didn't want to have to wait for the episodes to air weekly. The joke was on me when it was the same here. Over three weeks in and I still have an episode to go, but I can tell that the reviewer was dead on. This is a series for bingeing. It is not made to go for a week in-between episodes. It isn't compelling enough. It is more of a slow burn, psychological treatment that builds its' tension by stacking one episode on top of another. This ain't Game of Thrones, for Heaven's sake!. If I was the creative team behind this show, I would be furious with Sundance, as their viewing setup has butchered an otherwise fine 4 hours of escapist entertainment. One Dress a Day Challenge
June: Weddings
The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982) / Anthony Andrews as Sir Percy Blakeney and Jane Seymour as Marguerite St. Just
Another well-coordinated wedding pair! I love the embroidery on Percy's lapels, and of course his neckerchief is beautifully arranged, with a jeweled pin to fasten it.
It's always a bit amusing to see hair ornaments in the tall 18th-century women's hairdos. Compare Keira Knightley in The Duchess, here.

Anything Goes December
The Scarlet Pimpernel / Jane Seymour as Marguerite St. Just Blakeney
This isn't the most spectacular of Marguerite's costumes, but I love how cool and elegant it looks. The lace over the shoulders contrasts nicely with the narrow stripes on the dress, and the hat is rather dashing. I also like how she and Percy are color-coordinated!
I considered this for the month of grey but felt like there wasn't quite enough grey in it to qualify. And I also wasn't a hundred percent sure whether those stripes were grey or blue.

One Dress a Day Challenge
March: Pink Redux
Ivanhoe / Lysette Anthony as Lady Rowena
I finally manage to get to one of Rowena's costumes from this movie/miniseries! Honestly, apart from the obviously non-period fabric, it's actually not terrible as far as historical authenticity goes. It has more or less the right silhouette for the late 12th/early 13th century, when the story takes place. It's laced up the back--no zippers. And while she ought to have a veil or something over her hair, I can sort of justify it because she has to wear the crown, and at least she doesn't have '80s bangs or anything like that.
The more I study the costumes from this movie, the more I suspect they were working on a very tight budget.

One Dress a Week Challenge
May: Gold & Silver
The Scarlet Pimpernel / Jane Seymour as Marguerite St. Just Blakeney
I thought at first that this gown was styled a little too early, but after doing a little research, I think it's spot on. The story is set in 1792, which was about the last gasp of the "classic" 18th-century style before waistlines started creeping upward. Already, the panniers have disappeared, and the hairstyles are more wide than tall.
Costume design is credited to Phyllis Dalton. I doubt she had a huge budget, but this dress looks appropriately lavish for the wife of a nobleman to wear to a ball. The gold lace around the neckline is a particularly nice touch, as it appears in all the close-up shots.
The decorated underskirt only shows briefly when she's walking or moving, but I managed to get a couple of screencaps where it's visible.

One Dress a Day Challenge
Multicolored August
Ivanhoe / Olivia Hussey as Rebecca of York
Ah, the 1982 Ivanhoe again, aka Return of the Ren Faire. I actually like the combination of green and peach in the main part of the dress, but when you add the red cloak and orange hat, the total effect gets a little overwhelming. Also, you can't convince me that hat wasn't made with cardboard and a glue gun.
(I will do some of Rowena's costumes one of these days, I promise! It's just that Rebecca's have managed to fit the monthly themes better since I remembered this movie.)

One Dress a Week Challenge
October: Yellow
Ivanhoe (1982) / Olivia Hussey as Rebecca of York
This movie (well, miniseries) is such a guilty pleasure for me, costume-wise.* It's basically just one big ol' Ren Faire, with minimal historical accuracy, improbable colors, clearly modern fabrics, and obviously glass jewels. But, well, I love Ren Faires! And besides, what is Ivanhoe but a Ren Faire of a story, what with all the tournaments and Templars and a guest appearance by Robin Hood?
This is the sort of thing Rebecca wears when having a quiet evening at home with her father and not expecting any mysterious knights to stop by! Just hanging around in her bright yellow gown with the gold mesh surcoat and the headdress ... though it's a nice touch that when Ivanhoe does show up, she has to duck into another room to grab a veil.
*In terms of performances, though, it has nothing to apologize for. What a cast!

One Dress a Week Challenge
November: Purple
Ivanhoe (1982) / Olivia Hussey as Rebecca of York
As much as I chuckle (affectionately) at the costumes in this production for their Renaissance Faire style, they do an excellent job of depicting character and status. Rebecca's jewel-toned dresses make her look like some kind of tropical bird against the earth tones of the rest of the tournament crowd, setting her apart as an outsider, while the lavish use of gold shows her family's wealth.
This dress is kind of the inverse of the one from Baahubali: while that one was purple-over-red, this one is red-over-purple. I like the embroidered gold armbands. And just look at the knee-length lavender veil!
