Some notes from watching Ghibli's Tales from Earthsea:

I guess they were hoping having Lebannen be a killer runaway would make him more engaging a character than he was in Le Guin's books. Certainly its a more exciting introduction than "was sent to Roke and Ged decided he should tag along." But this is hampered by how Lebannen and all these characters have maybe two character traits between them.

No matter how bad the movie is, if its a Ghibli film its gonna be beautiful. The background artists for this should be given a medal. Hork town especially is incredible:

Although these are clearly Ghibli asthetics more than Earthsea aesthetics. We got all your Ghibli staples: the weird mammals that are almost real animals, the random fighterpilot elements in the costume design, that one weird type of hood, etc.

I do like the action scene of Lebannen dealing with the slavers. Only well-paced part of the film I've seen.

The shadow "visiting" Lebannen while he rests was done very well. The color dimming, the shadow on the water, the rushing wind towards him, its all great. I'm especially a fan of how when Lebannen looks over his shoulder, he sees nothing but a stream of water coming out of a wall. Fits with what's actually happening on in the dryland very well.

The "Ged rescues Lebannen but only takes the chains off the other slaves" is a weird detail to keep in the adaptation, though I guess it's less an obviously dick move when the slaves aren't trapped on a boat with their former captors.

I feel mixed about this version of Cob? Making him the slaver lord isn't a bad choice, though it does kind of positions slavery in Earthsea as "the bad thing that the one bad guy is doing" instead of, y'know, a cornerstone of Hork Town's economy.

They don't make him an especially originally villain either. He's literally introduced with the old "flash of villains castle, lieutenant comes in nervously to report on escape, almost gets killed until he mentions something important" trope. They did kind of flatten him into the stock fantasy big bad.

But Cob from the books didn't really have a lot going on character-wise either, so its less offensive a flattening than some of the other characters. And I do like his character design alot. That eye makeup is some Hot Topic Shit but it works. The thin lips and tall everything is a type of exaggeration I don't see in Ghibli's character design very often.

Christ, Ged's monologue about the balance and true names is really just plopped on the audience's lap like a dead mouse. The bridge from "why does a wizard like farming" to "everything has a true name that wizard's use for its power" is nonexistent. They really couldn't find another place to explain the basics of the magic system? Couldn't seed it with Ged using true names while freeing the slaves? No? Lord.

The ghibli food twitters aren't gonna touch this movie. No love was put into that cheese.

Oh this depiction of the dry lands fucks. Love how the sky is a completely different artstyle than anything else in this movie, really sells this as a weird and alien place.

Hare and two suspicious women clutching each other and going "they're not from around here" are the only time this movie has felt like it knew what it was doing. They're giving them banter and the actors are being allowed to put emotion into their voices. They're actually breaking out facial expressions for these guys.

God all the dialogue is so bad.

WHEN IS THIS SONG GONNA FUCKING END

What the fuck is Lebannen and Tehanu's relationship. None of their emotional beats have any real connection.

The thing haunting Lebannen (are they giving him the gebbeth plotline?) always makes the best scenes. Lebannen struggling to wade through the muck while the shadow casually strolls atop the water's surface creates such great tension and horror.

Tenar keeps talking about being rescued from the tombs and pausing like there's about to be a flashback. Why are they bringing so much attention to that detail if they're not gonna tie it in to anything. Either have it be an aside to make the world feel richer without it being a thing your constantly gesturing at, or don't bring it up at all.

It really was a choice to take the worst Earthsea book as the main thing they're adapting. All the "life without death is no life" rubbish and not even Le Guin's prose to save it. It's not even a theme the rest of the movie seems concerned with.

Why are they taking something called "Earthsea" and making 90% the outskirts of Hork Town. We saw the ocean like twice. This supposedly expansive fantasy world feels twenty feet across.

Having Tehanu follow the gebbeth to the castle is honestly a really cool adaptational choice. I do like the weird conflict they set up between the gebbeth and Cob over who gets to have Lebannen.

See when Ged didn't do shit for most of The Far Shore it was fine, because it was the third book in the series and the reader already knew why he was a big deal. Here we keep hearing how cool and powerful he is but get shown nothing.

2D has grown odd in his old age.

They have not set up dragons as a thing (or connectd them to Tehanu) nearly enough for this ending to work. Having Tehanu transform instead of calling Kalesin works adaptation-wise though.

Final analysis: I liked Hork Town. I like how the dragons trail sparks from their eyes. I like Cob going all gooey. I like Hare. These were the isolated pockets in an otherwise bland experience. The plot was barely held together and I can't imagine someone who hadn't read the books would be able to enjoy this at all.

Concept: a separate name for while you're travelling. You only use it during a trip or while in a train/plane/bus etc.

Frankie is the calmer out of the two 

Don’t get me wrong, they're both thought out, smart men. They were special ops after all

But Benny is young and impulsive, there are moments where he acts on feelings and feelings alone without thinking of the outcome. “That boy is all heart and no brain.” is what his mother used to say when he was younger. 

Their relationship didn’t start until they got out of the military. Before it had been lingering eyes, and some palpable tensions when one of them laughs at a joke and an adrenaline filled physical contact after a close call. But they never spoke on it. 

They never said anything while Fish holds Benny’s head in his lap during a particularly bad shift, or the way he cards his fingers through his hair while mumbling “I got you Ben. You’re alright.”

It had been Benny who took the leap after their service together. Calling him up and asking if he wanted to get some dinner together. 

“will the guys be there?”

There was a pause. “no, it’ll just be you and me ‘fish, that alright?”

But even then, Catfish was a man of humility and to put it kindly, painfully oblivious. So he didn’t want to assume anything and be wrong. 

I mean for fucks sake, this is Will’s brother. These men were his family. His pack. He didn’t want to fuck that up. 

it wasn’t until the waitress finally set their plates, well done burgers, no onions on frankie’s and no lettuce on Benny’s, that he finally said something. 

“I like you, okay?” The words came so suddenly from the younger Miller that Frankie found himself listening to his heartbeat, that was running wildly in his chest. “I like you a lot, man. And maybe im crazy but I think you like me too.”

Frankie took a moment to simply stare at him. Wide eyed and shocked and fucking ecstatic. 

“If im wrong, then shit, im sorry ‘Fish. We can forget this whole thing happened and just go back to normal, alright? But I can’t go another day without saying something.”

He had never seen Benny so nervous before. His usually grin was replaced with a drawn in bottom lip, chewing anxiously and eyes that skittered around the room. 

“could you please say something?”

Frankie smiled and knocked his knee against Benny’s. 

“You’re cute when you ramble, Miller.”

Benny sat up straighter and scoffed. “Fuck you, man.”

The weren’t being secretive, technically. They just, hadn’t mentioned it to the others. 

But Will knew Catfish well, and he knew his brother even better. 

Which is why he told them both sternly, as his coach and his brother. “training rule stays the same, alright? No sex before a fight.” and that was that. 

A tradition had been made. For full moons and ruts, Benny would accompany Frankie to his cabin out in the woods. Far away from hikers or any nature junkie that would stumble upon it. 

“my grandfather made it.” he explained. “we’ve got uh, a long running generation of shifters in the family. He thought it’d be best for us to have a place to escape to, you know? Without worrying about hurting somebody.”

They’d spent the next few days in a haze. Fucking and chasing and hunting like animals together. Before they’d return back home with satisfied smiles and a myriad of marks on their skin to cover up before the others gave them shit for it.

Now they were in love. Committed to each other to the point where Frankie, damn his heart, had caught himself thinking about a potential wedding, far in the future. 

But that didn’t mean they were blind. Sure, they noticed other people from time to time. If Frankie saw a man with a bright smile and toned body, he would let his eyes linger. The same way Benny would grin as the waitress paid extra special attention to him while taking their orders. 

It’s natural, neither of them caused fights over it. Because at the end of the day they loved each other. 

But you, had thrown a wrench in those plans. 

The bar had been packed that night. Benny couldn’t figure out why just yet. There was no game on or long expected fight for patrons to bet on and drink themselves dead over. But they were still packed in like sardines, to the point that Frankie found himself hitting shoulders with five people as he went to get drinks for the table. 

He had finally waved down the bartender when you walked by. 

The interaction didn’t last longer then 7 seconds at the most. You had just been trying to make your way through the crowd. 

Hand softly laid on his chest with a mumbles “excuse me, sorry.” and a sympathetic smile thrown to him as you were pressed up against him before slipping between a couple and disappearing. 

He tried to remember what he was doing before, but all he did was watch your form blend into the crowd until he couldn’t see you. 

Bar. he was at the bar. What was he going to order?

He couldn’t remember, all he was focused on was the way your hands laid on his chest and the way you smelled, fuck you smelled amazing. Rich and smoky and intoxicating. 

He felt like it should have tripped some alarm. That there was a crimson red flag waving in front of his face that he couldn’t see cause he was too busy thinking about you and the way it lingered around him. 

“hey, buddy!” the bartender snapped him out of his stupor and he stopped himself from growling before he realizes just what was going on. “either order something or fuck off, its a busy night.”

When he came back to the table, nobody seemed to notice. They were all too sucked in to a story Pope was telling about his sister and her trip to Paris. 

It wasn’t until Benny wrapped an arm around his shoulder and leaned into Frankie’s space that he froze. 

“you know, if you stared at her ass any harder I might've gotten jealous.” He could hear the tease in his voice, there was no anger or resentment.

Frankie swallowed dryly. 

“she uh...she smelled funny.”

His boyfriends sharp laugh shook off the fog that clouded his head. Benny always had that affect on him. 

They both returned to the conversation at hand, but even Benny could smell the sweet aroma that curled around Francisco and found himself enamored with it.

Every time I look at this it just blows my mind that this was where we were with aircraft design over 55 years ago using slide rules and pencils. Imagine being there when it was first rolled out of the hangar - the sheer size and it’s futuristic look would have been Iike something from a comic book. March 1969:  Marine F-4 Phantoms from VMFA-232 “Red Devils” being refueled by KC-130s over the Johnson Islands while on transpacific flight to Vietnam. The aircraft at front of picture – 155811- was the only Marine jet shot down by MiGs during the Vietnam war.   “Lt Sam Cordova , 28, (pic 2) was the pilot of an F4J fighter jet shot down over Laos on August 26, 1972. His plane was downed on the border of Laos and Vietnam in Houa Phan Province near the city of Sop Hoa. His F-4J was BuNo 155811, and he was shot down by a MiG-21, the only Marine jet ever to be lost to enemy aircraft during the Vietnam War. Cordova was part of a two-plane flight.  The NVAF pilot who shot him down was Nguyen Duc Soat (26), of the 3rd Company, and it was his fifth of six aerial kills. Lt. Cordova spoke to U.S. aircraft in the area over his survival radio while safely parachuting from his aircraft. He later radioed that he had fallen into a ravine and heard his pursuers approaching. According to a member of Cordova's squadron, Sam Cordova's last transmission stated that he was going to be captured if he wasn't picked up immediately.   Cordova's back-seater – Lt Darrell Borders - was rescued, but rescue attempts for Cordova were hampered because of heavy ground fire. Sam's emergency radio beeper was traced to Ban Na Ca Tay, a Viet Cong village. Attempts to contact him through the device failed.  This seemed clear indication that Cordova was  captured, but he was classified Missing in Action.” Src POW Network.   On December 15th 1988, the remains of Maj.
