Preventable. Treatable. Beatable. March 1st kicks off National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. More than 90 percent of cases occur in people aged 50 or older. African Americans are about 20% more likely to get colorectal cancer and about 40% more likely to die from it than most other groups. The reasons for the differences are complex, but they largely reflect differences in risk factors and in health care access, both of which are related to socioeconomic status. The single most important thing you can do to reduce your risk for colorectal cancer is to get screened. Research findings indicate that African-Americans are at a younger age than any other population when diagnosed with colorectal cancer. As a result, experts suggest that African-Americans get screened beginning at age 45. While colorectal cancer is more common among Black men and women, knowing your family history, making healthy choices, and getting screened can all help you take control of and reduce your risk. It’s time to spread the word about screening, symptoms, and risks. Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. Building awareness is an important part of helping to increase screening and decrease mortality rates. What are you going to do? #FightColorectalCancer https://www.instagram.com/p/CalhPxnLLf3kfsNjzuPen81sP_ksThPaMyQ14g0/?utm_medium=tumblr

LONG POST ALERT!!! PLEASE READ… OR NOT!!!! Like everybody I try to look at my best for my social media posts. However, today I will make an exception, and I am going to share a photo that shows me at my most vulnerable and real self: swollen, hungry and waking up from and intense dose of sedation. Just the regular combo after having had a colonoscopy. For those who still don’t know it, I have colonoscopies regularly because I am one of the over a million #ColoRectal #Cancer #Survivors that live in the United States of America. For almost four years, I have been a survivor of a disease that is the second cause of death related to #Cancer in the USA, and one that can be prevented and even cured if diagnosed on time. A #colonoscopy is the standard procedure to screen this disease, and though the preparation for it really sucks, (includes fasting, laxative and non-stop pooping) it’s an instrument to save lives. I take the time to share this because there are millions of people that still have not been screened. If you see this #hideous #photo of #me, and it reminds you, that you feel that something maybe is wrong with your #gut, don’t even waste time liking this photo, just go to your GI doctor and get screened. A #colonoscopy saved my #life and it could save yours. If you feel like wanting to support the efforts to win the battle against this disease, go to the link in my profile and donate to @fightcrc, they are an amazing organization that provides people like me with information, support, research and a platform to find purpose in something as scary and life-changing as a #cancer #diagnosis. Finally, and despise how horrible I look in this photo, this is a celebratory one: I got clean results, which means that there is no evidence of disease!!!!! Thanks for reading this long post and get ready to go back to my regular content full of selfies, parties, non-stop PDA with my #love @sammintz and #goodtimes! Fight Colorectal Cancer Benefit
On Friday April 1, 2016 I performed the song “Superwoman” I had written for my friend Lisa Palet Goldstein about her journey with colon cancer that was showcased in the last blog post on the radio. I was accompanied by Nashville singer/songwriter Michael Kelsh and dobro musician Al Goll for our performance at the Sparks of Strength Luminary event.
The folks with Fight Colorectal Cancer shared the live performance and Lisa’s talk over Periscope. If you missed it here are the links from the event!

Live performance of “Superwoman”
We had a great night downtown in Nashville on Friday despite the cold weather. I feel so honored to have been asked to participate. (Thank you Robin Ferin for the photo! xoxo)

#noshavenovember has come to an end. After 30 days, my face and scalp are very happy to be groomed and conditioned. As usual, I've made donations to #theamericancancerassosiation #stjudechildrenshospital #preventcancerfoundation and #fightcolorectalcancer. All four of these foundations are making great strides to fight cancer in their own unique way. It's personal for me, as I've lost my mother, sister, uncle, and two grandparents to different types of cancer. With further research, I believe one day we will find a cure. We were on WSM Radio today!!
Today I had the wonderful privilege of doing a last minute radio show with Devon O’Day and Nan Kelley over at WSM radio. I was asked to come out and showcase the details for the Sparks of Strength Luminary event I will be performing at this Friday night between 8:00PM and 9:30PM in downtown Nashville. Danielle Ripley-Burgess, representative for the Fight Colorectal Cancer organization also joined us on the show. The interview showcases cancer survivor Lisa Palet Goldstein’s story and my live performance of the song I wrote in her honor called “Superwoman.” I was accompanied by Nashville singer/songwriter Michael Kelsh and dobro musician Al Goll.
These two (below) were troopers, they showed up at my house only a few hours before the radio show to learn my song and help save radio land from my horrible guitar skills!
You can listen to our live WSM interview and song showcase here.
The organization “Fight Colorectal Cancer” is a nonprofit organization known for their colorectal cancer awareness, advocacy, patient education and research programs. This weekend they are in Nashville for their One Million Strong Showcase. I have the honor of performing my “Superwoman” written for my best friend Lisa Palet Goldstein after watching her struggle through treatment over the past year and a half. You can read more about her story in my February 2015 “Fabulous Women Over 40″ blog post.
I am honored to be a part of many planned events this weekend by the organization. Please come out and support the One Million Strong Showcase and be inspired! Lisa will be speaking and I will be singing the song “Superwoman” with Al and Michael backing me up musically.
The event details are here!
