#fic: nico hischier and nolan patrick

Just discovered the WYL universe and it’s so good! I can’t wait for the final chapter of Trevor/Jamie! I also have a question about Nico and Jack - sorry in advance if this has already been asked/answered. When did Nico first know or suspect Jack was a sub? Did he suspect during the threesome? Did he know when he offered to let Jack take care of him and it was just to confirm his suspicions? Or was that when he first realised?

Yay, so glad you're enjoying it!! I don't think I've specifically confirmed when Nico knew. Caveat up front: I didn't put it in the story, so this is just me speculating and having fun with it. If I ever write Nico's pov of this story, it might change! But let's speculate. 😄

I think Nico was attracted to Jack pretty early on, maybe even before the threesome, and that inevitably put the idea in his head of what it might be like if Jack subbed for him. But being into someone doesn't necessarily mean they have a compatible dynamic with you, as Nico learned a couple years back when he developed an intense crush on Nolan Patrick during their draft year events (Nolan actually is a sub, but Nico didn't find that out). So Nico notices Jack and then has to be all "oh man, don't go down this path again, stop imagining your dom teammates as subs, you are probably wrong and it's vaguely creepy" and trying to get over his crush. He did not do a great job of this.

So then they have the threesome, and that REALLY doesn't help Nico with his crush, especially the thing where Jack responded so strongly to his praise. But Nico's still probably wrong, right?? He's gotta lock down these thoughts, Jack is a DOM, imagining anything else is just setting himself up for disaster. He's still telling himself not to let his imagination run away with him when Jack shows up at his door in subdrop. But the idea is firmly enough in his head that it's easy to notice when Jack gets even more upset at the idea of having to take care of Nico. Maybe...maybe Nico's imagination hasn't been so out of line. It's worth a shot, anyway, if it might help Jack. So he tries comforting Jack the way he would a sub, and he feels Jack's body melt, and then he knows.

Nico lets his eyes drift back over to Nolan sitting next to him; in the soft golden light cast by the sunset, he looks even more striking than usual. Well, by all accounts, he shouldn't look striking at all, with his salt crusted hair, and sand stuck to the remnants of sunscreen Nico made him apply (not enough it would seem from the flush of his shoulders and forehead). It's just— he looks relaxed— happy.

Nico looks back at the waves lapping at the shore, relentless. He thinks about how the waves can't help but crash against the beach, over and over again forever. And the sand always remains, just as unyielding.

"Did you know that most sand's like pooped out by parrotfish?" he says, listing to the side to feel Nolan's soft skin against his arm.

"Hmm?" Nolan raises an eyebrow when he looks over at Nico, the corner of his mouth tugging up in amusement.

He feels his chest tighten a little; this Nolan is so rare: jaw unclenched, brows unfurrowed, smile unsuppressed. This Nolan is just for him; he exists in these fleeting moments, little fragile bubbles they make for themselves.

This is the Nolan who he shared the hotel room with ahead of their Draft. The same Nolan who pressed him into the couch for the first time halfway through their rookie year, while they were wrestling for the Playstation controller in his Hoboken apartment. A Nolan he had gotten used to seeing before—

Well, it's a Nolan he hasn't seen in a long time. He forces himself to breath through it and smile back. He doesn't ask the question that's been on the tip of his tongue all week.

"Sand," he says, "It's made by a fish eating rocks or whatever and pooping it out. Don't you think that's kinda, I don't know, weird?"

"I guess," Nolan indulges him.

Nico falls back onto the beach towel; he's pleasantly surprised when Nolan nudges into his space, laying half on top of him, blocking his view of the sky. He forces himself to stay still as Nolan runs his fingers, agonizing and light, over his chest and stomach.

"Can I help you? I was admiring the view."

Nolan snorts, "Yeah, well, you should be admiring this view."

"Really?" Nico tries for deadpan— he's not sure he's successful— "You're kinda gross, bud."

"Bud? I'll show you 'bud'," Nolan grumbles before leaning down and pressing a firm kiss to his lips.

Nico hums into it, his hands once again finding soft skin as he pulls Nolan closer. He's happy to just be in this bubble for now. The future is for Future Nico to deal with.

Regret (Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick, regency A/B/O au) I had a lot of fun with the world building of and logistics of inheritance in this and I am also just very proud of the writing in it. I think I did well capturing the vibes of the regency era. I spent a lot of time doing research for this one.

Where the light went (Nico Hischier/Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick, soulmate au, nontraditional soulmates) I didn't write this one by myself but part of what I am so proud of about this fic is how my co-author and I managed to build a cohesive writing style throughout. This is another where I love the world building I did.

And now, for my favorite fic I have ever written or will ever write

Unchained melody (Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick, rule 63, f/f, 1950s au) I wish I had more eloquent things to say about this fic but I think this is my magnum opus. I loved the story telling. It's deeply personal and I poured my whole heart and soul into this Google doc. I think I really captured something of the desperate loneliness of being in a marriage you don't really want to be in even if you don't know that at the time that it's happening. I spent hours and hours researching for this fic from 1950s fashion and recipes to crop planting schedules to the history of swimming pools in Winnipeg. I just put a lot of love and care into this one and I think it shows. Please, even if you have never cared about hockey, read this fic. It's deeply important to me.

I see a world in which post-retirement nolpat has accepted he's a sub, to the extent that he'll secretly see professional Doms to get his needs taken care of, but is still extremely ashamed about it and isn't out to anyone, and is therefore denying himself the chance of a real Ds relationship that could actually bring him happiness. Enter TK...

Yeah, this seems right. Washing out of the NHL made him admit that he can't ignore his needs as a sub. But he doesn't feel like he deserves good scenes, because he doesn't deserve good anything, so he goes to a professional who keeps things clinical and does the bare minimum to maintain his health. Probably doesn't even let himself go totally under -- or maybe he can't, he's spent too many years keeping himself out of subspace, and now his mind trips him up anytime he tries to access it. Which just reinforces the idea that he's unworthy: why should he bother getting a real dom, when he won't even be able to get anything out of it?

Side note: I bet Nico had a crush on Nolan their draft year and was dying to put him on his knees and felt totally guilty about it. Then Jack was drafted to the Devils and Nico got a crush on him, too, and was like, "Why does this happening to me? Why do I keep getting crushes on fellow doms??" Little did he know 😏

anon i have to confess i am not a connoisseur of the nico hischier fanfiction scene though i know it exists. i know people ship him with jack hughes (i also do, though i don't really seek out fic) and jonas siegenthaler and back in the day with nolan patrick (i had a real fondness for this at the time but idk if it's still on anyone's mind at all). if you want recs other people might be able to provide but for myself i mostly just occasionally see pictures of him and write a little imagine for myself in my head and then move on 😂

He used to play in the NHL. Pretty solid dude.” And it ends with Milla exchanging a too-serious-for-a-three-year-old look with Pandy the Penguin and nodding. “We want the knife shoes.”   Or Nico is a single father with a cute but hyperactive daughter and Nolan is the retired NHLer who runs a program for little kids. You know how the story ends.

Most of my most kudosed are F1 fics despite my half decade in hockey fandom. I wrote a lot of rarepairs there or ships that became popular but were just getting off the ground. By kudos:

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I didn't used to reply to comments for a long time but over the last like 2-3 years I respond to every comment I get. I tend to do it as soon as I get the ao3 email so I won't forget to do it. I like responding to comments now that I do and I enjoy engaging with the readers of my fics.

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't write angsty endings. All of my fics end happily.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think most of them are equally happily but I think the two most hard earned ones are play til you win (in which Daniel is an alcoholic who has to quit drinking and go to therapy to get there) and unchained melody (which is set in the 1950s and involves a lot of depression and self denial and immense heartbreak before they get there). I think to me the most hard fought victories are the happiest, especially when you have to overcome great odds to get there like in these two fics.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

So, when I wrote regret (Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick, regency omegaverse) I made a person a villain and got like 30 harassing comments from the same person about making him the villain. He deserved to be the villain.

I also got some not so nice comments on maybe we did something right because Max says of course a lot which honestly, if anything, I undersold it compared to real life.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes! I think at least half if not more of my fics contain smut. I actually enjoy the challenge of writing it. I've written a lot of different kinds but largely it's pretty vanilla. My favorite smut to write is definitely f/f though since it's the kind I obviously know that most about.

10. Do you write crossovers?

I once wrote a Mitch Marner/Shawn Mendes fic for a dear friend who was going through a hard time. It's very cute.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge, no

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Another one where if I have, I don't know about it. People are totally welcome to translate my fic though! I would be quite flattered.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! I co-wrote a rather long soulmate trope subversion fic with a friend for hockey big bang one year and I think we did a great job marrying our writing styles. The fic is where the light went (Nico Hischier/Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick)

14. What's your all-time favorite ship? In F1, it's far and away Maxiel. For hockey rpf it's a 3-way tie between TK/Nolan, Jack/Nico, and Mitch/Dylan. I'm Marvel, easily Stucky.

I only have the first couple of pages written and I think the idea is brilliant (it's rule 63 and in it Nolan missed out on Olympic gold in a tie break scenario like Raisman and Mustafina) but I think it's never going to happen, especially now that I'm writing hockey less than I used to.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Strong research, and setting a time and place that is very grounded when I write AUs (particularly those that are set in the past)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I think I don't always keep to the fandom general consensus of characterization very well but I'm not sure that's truly a weakness.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Absolutely not. I only speak English really at all and Google is a very poor translator. I don't want to get another language wrong and I don't really think it serves to move the story along if the other party wouldn't understand it anyway.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

A long deleted Welcome to Nightvale fic that was only 800 words long and was deleted 6 months after I posted it on ao3 because it wasn't very good.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

It is 100% unchained melody. I think it's lush and beautiful and rich storytelling that's very grounded in the time and place (late 1950s, Winnipeg) it's written and I don't think I will ever write anything as wonderful as that. A close second though is play til you win which I think has some similar qualities in terms of groundedness in time and place (mid 2000s, central New Jersey).

Dead reckoning- my favorite characterization of nolan patrick like wow it's crazy. the dialogue is weird because they're in their twenties and they play hockey and it's very much "the homophobic sphere of the NHL and is he really your bro?" one of my favorite lines from fic ever came from this. the gay chicken tag? very relevant and also horrifically understated. they take it to the 1000%. archive locked. tknp. explicit.

i'll try to come back home- it's soulmates in hockey rpf so you know it's gonna go fucking crazy. soulmates popping in and out of each other's worlds + they're from different countries + they meet up when they get scouted as top prospects for the same draft. it's awesome and epic and very sweet. 1319. teen.

Door to Door- picture this: your upstairs neighbor is being loud as shit with his dogs again and you decide to confront him. he's the hottest guy you've ever seen. you guys become friends. you both have no idea you're super fucking into each other. bonus points for bar scenes and getting told that you're being an idiot about the dude you want to date. archive locked. bennguin. explicit.

anything written by honeydripping. everything by this author is gold but especially On The Banks of Kettle Creek. it's genuinely stunning and it makes me really emotional when i think about it, honestly.

hello! friends! we are officially halfway through the year! (terrifying!) as a check in, i'm 500k words over where i thought i'd be at the end of the year, and 87 fics short of where i thought i'd be this point in the year, but that's fine because my predictions were based on utter nonsense.

you can tell i'm mentally unwell because mcstrome made up almost 20% of the 105 hrpf fics i read this month, and then the next biggest pairings were zach/willy, nate/cale, and gally squared. though if you combine all of my devils fics into one category you get the second highest percent at just shy of 11, so!

but anyway, three recs!

-blame it on the boys who keep hitting on you by romytelesco is an utterly charming travis dermott/ryan graves/troy stecher college 5+1 that is just fun and sweet and makes the pairing work

-i could find you in the dark of any town by philatoi ( @philtatoii ) is just a great little nico gender exploration that takes place in this just absolutely wonderful snapshot of nico/nolan as a relationship, just so charming

-memory collecting by starrkey ( @corvideight ) is just the absolute softest lil jackty (are you starting to see a trend in this month's recs?) that really just made me 🥺🥺🥺 the entire time i was reading it
