Hey, where'd the concept of Moon Tea come from? And where can I get some if I'm spending the night with Sky?

That's a great question! I've been using the idea of moon tea since I started writing (in about 2015? 16?) and it's honestly just stuck in my brain ever since. I like using it because I believe it helps enhance the 'realness' of my stories (i.e not wanting to have kids while in the middle of an actual quest) and I have a bit of trauma regarding not having access to that kind of stuff, so writing about characters having safe, fun intimacy with no risk really tickles my fancy.

As for the name, I originally got it from Game of Thrones, which has a similar contraceptive by the same name, though it tends to have negative side effects that I try to write out (might do something with this tidbit later, but it'll be a bit.)

I also headcannon that moon tea is available in most areas of Hyrule (think how you can get plan B from most grocery/corner stores), whether you want to buy or make it. The Game of Thrones recipe is tansy, mint, wormwood, a spoon of honey, and a drop of pennyroyal, but here's the recipe I imagine in my fics: blue nightshade, restless cricket, mighty thistle, coarse honey, and... Lizalfos talon! We be getting freaky over here in Hyrule.

As for moon tea on Skyloft, they're pretty well-developed, so it's got to be somewhere! Don't give up hope ;)

End of Year Fic Review

2. how many words did you write in total in 2022?

I had to estimate this, cos I published about 130,000 but some of that I wrote in 2021, and I’ve written about 20,000 unpublished words, so I’d reckon about 120,000??

3. how many fics did you publish in 2022 // multi-chapter vs. one-shots?

I finished publishing Near Mint (Greysnow High Fidelity set in 90s Glasgow), I added a chapter (or 2?) to my never finished WIP don’t worry, it’s my blood (environmental/political modern Jonsa), I published a little three chapter flawed 60s Jonsa, (based on the Bob Dylan song) tangled up in blue. I haven’t finished (Are you) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For? (20s Jonerys, kind of peaky blinders inspired). Oh and I haven’t finished assistance (modern theatre Daensa). I published 15 one shots, and one self indulgent 2 chapter Rhaegar wins, boys kiss thing.

4. what was your longest-fic // shortest fic?

Near Mint is the longest. After the Storm is the shortest (it’s really more a painting with 86 words attached)

5. Most popular? Least Popular?

Ooops I deleted this question, 20s Jonerys is the most popular, the modern Jon x Jeyne P is the least I’d say.

6. what fic didn’t perform as well as you thought it would?

Spank Me (it’s fluffy Jonerys smut), and maybe my Rhaelicent, Breathing Dreams (I kinda got my hopes up by that “it’s a live fandom” thing, which is fine so long as you don’t write a Great Gatsby inspired non story, that’s mainly atmosphere and clothes, and Alicent only gets kissed cos you have a headcanon that she is way more into giving than receiving, I would like to add that her giving is very sexy of her but…)

7. what fic performed way better than you thought it would?

The Grey King and the Dragon Nagga (it’s a tumblr fic that apparently some people read, I’m so confused)

8. what was your favourite fic you wrote in 2022?

Wolfish or Relinquishment (it’s the grief sex people)

9. what was your favourite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022?

I actually read a lot of stuff that was written before 2022 this year. In part because I was looking for stuff for @jonsnow-creative to reblog (probably should get back on that).

I love beta-ing, I love the fics I beta. So, Happiness by @salty-wench (Greysnow woven with gracefully with grief and humour), And Now My Watch Begins, by @evax3 (Jonerys canon divergence, Dany raised as a boy at Castle Black), and One by One the Walls Give Way by @owlsinathens (post show canon Greysnow, Jon and Theon begin to navigate their trauma through corsetry, among other things) are all stories I would shout about to the world . And are all in progress, so I’d love some more darlings (kisses).

I’m so glad I discovered you @thistle-and-thorn and the many crushed red flowers

@charmtion finished then comes blood almost a year ago, and I still think of it, and it’s cinematic and tense and wonderful

The other fic I want to shout about goes along with my shouting about The English, a song that will keep sky open in my mind, by @laiqualaurelote. It’s so rare for me that a piece of media convinces me to ship the canon pairing, I’m contrary, sorry. Anyway this story is beautiful and it came to me in a beautiful surprising way, (whilst I was a bit flu-delirious, so it seemed particularly magical).

Ooh and there’s a rhaelicent, what is it good for, by bluebaric, (it’s a barbed mid century arranged marriage au) I don’t know if they have a tumblr?

Just another boring update

Don’t know when I last left off so forgive me the rambling.

We seem to finally be in a stretch of good weather, so hopefully it’s finally here to stay.  I was starting to think it would be low 40s, cloudy and wet for the balance of the year.

The back garden is up and running.  I gave up on my seed starters, all of which sprouted and then promptly stopped growing.  Next year I’m resolved to counting 8 weeks backwards from Mother’s Day weekend before I plant.  I think lingering indoors for so long fucked them up.

But we’ve got tomatoes, red bell peppers, eggplant, zucchini, onions, cucumbers, pinto beans, corn, strawberries and then some basil, parsley, sweet mint, and oregano.  This on top of the berry plants.

I’m not sure what’s up with the onions... they grew for a bit and -- like the others that were started indoors -- just sort of... stopped doing anything.  I just went out and trimmed the greens to about two inches, so we’ll see if that gives them a little nudge. Plus now I’ve got onion greens for an omelette tomorrow.

The blueberries flowered, and now I’m side-eyeing them for actual berries.  This is their last year to do something other than take up space.  The blackberries are already flowering, looking very handsome.  Raspberries are well on their way.  I continue to wage an ongoing battle against the beast known as thistle, which can go fuck itself sideways.

We added ten bags of fresh pea gravel to the patio, which had naturally begun to sink a bit since we put it in.  We could add another 5 bags in easily, but it already looks much better and fuller.

I gave up on the notion of harvesting the maple seed pods to eat.  Oh, there were certainly enough of them, but due to the wind and rain they all ended up soggy and on the ground, and I wasn’t keen on eating them.  I cherry picked a small handful, however, and just got in some peat pots to plant next year’s baby maples.  The others have all gone to new homes!

We also picked up three frog tadpoles and probably two dozen “toadpoles” from the garden center, along with some water lettuce, a hyacinth and a water lily.  I had to take my Mom to Ollie’s today, and while there I got a “mister” for the hose, so we’re quite ready to spend the summer in our little back yard oasis.

After our Saturday afternoon gardening we even broke out the ciders and played some baggo, and we’re already looking forward to getting out there again this weekend.  Hopefully the rain in the forecast ends up hitting earlier or later than anticipated.

While we were out there working on Saturday we heard two dogs in one of the adjoining yards fighting each other.  Not super unusual, but then one of them started screaming in pain.  I ran up to the second floor to see what the hell was happening, and spotted two of the neighbors in the back trying to separate their dogs through the chain link fence -- the pitbull that’s always barking at people in other yards had grabbed the other dog by the face through the links in the fence, and they couldn’t get him to let go.

They did finally separate them, somehow, and the bitten dog seemed okay, so I don’t know what happened after that.  That pitbull is a fucking menace, though, and now it’s obvious why the neighbor on the other side put up a solid vinyl fence, shitty or otherwise.

My Mom’s little garden bed is up and running now, as well -- zucchini, tomatoes and peppers, plus a bunch of different herbs, some annual flowers and a potted blackberry.  If the blackberry seems to do well over the next couple months we’ll dig out a little bed for it and get it planted.

We’re already battening down the hatches for coming fall and winter. They say it’s going to be bad, and while we can hope for the best we’re planning for the worst.  We gave up on the notion of turning the attic into a guest room and instead bought three heavy duty shelves which Marc put up this weekend.  Every time we get groceries I pick up a plus-one of this, a little extra of that.  I’ve got some dry bulk containers coming in soon, both for us and for my Mom, and I think she’s keen to start stocking her larder as well.

In a stroke of luck (I hope), I happened to find a chest freezer on Walmart’s website that wasn’t backordered.  Snatched it up as fast as I could, and supposedly it will get delivered by the end of the month. I say “I hope” because I won’t believe it until I get a shipping confirmation... you can’t find freezers anywhere right now, and most places say they’re backordered until July or August.  We already have ours, but this one is for my Mom -- I think it will give her a good excuse to spend the summer cooking, preserving and freezing so they’ll be in a better spot at the end of the year.

The other thing we’re trying to get our hands on is a greenhouse.  The little plastic one we got for free has been great for preserving plants through the frost, and storing stuff out of the way, so by the end of the year we want to upgrade to a more permanent structure.  We’re also going to cut a hole in the door so that Fidget (and the other ferals) can use it for extra shelter and warmth in the winter.

We’re just... doing what we can.  Keeping an ear to the ground so to speak.

Right now I want to go dig up an old fic of mine and give it another read.

I'm so excited you get to binge Mint and Thistles! It's one of my favorites and one of the sweetest fics around! LadyV is a wonderful writer and seems like a lovely lady. I only wish she'd update more regularly because I'm dying to know things about a certain wife and need to read J/C getting down and dirty in the next chapter! I'm also a huge fan of yours and DATRIL! #5: what’s a fic that changed the way you see a certain character?

Hmmm this is an interesting question. I think @kalendraashtar ‘s Scalpel and Needle, especially Arc II was so fascinating to read a different side of Jamie. I find that I love reading fics with focuses on Jamie bc most of the OL books are in Claire’s POV.
