Hello, in a move that surprises no one, I want to know about the Louis Rare Pair fic :))))))))))) haha
Haha! Thank you for this surprising reaction to the WIP game 🤪
So the @louisrarepairfest fic is based on Prompt S: bread van fic reimagined with all the guys in Louis’ band.
My original idea was to set the story completely inside the van, one simple space and have 5 characters interacting inside. I intended to make it mostly funny, with sharp forth and backs, but when I started writing I was listening to an Audiobook (italian classic book that I could never read cause it’s tooo dense so I listened to it) and I was inspired by Chapter Three - The Smoke.
And I decided to spice up the things a bit, using the story as a tool to approach to the topic of tobacco/weed in a different light. I don’t know if I can manage lol but this is my project so far.
Since you’re always so nice to me, Anitra, I will also give you a little snippet 🥰 hope you like it!
«Hey, Lou», said Micheal, fingers hidden in the back pocket of his skinny jeans. A single silver earring gleamed under the dim lights when he tilted his head slightly. «Was it your idea?» A soft smile tugged at the corners of his lips, a glimpse of confidence peeking through his bashful facade.
Louis sauntered forward, cigarette dangling from his lips. With a mocking snort, he shook his head, sending puffs of smoke swirling around him. Each step exuded confidence, his eyes crinkling behind dark round sunglasses, the smoldering tip of his cigarette casting a faint glow on his face. « ‘t was Oli’s. File your complaints at him».
Louis took a few more steps and found himself enveloped by the tightknit circle of friends.
«Oliver!», shouted Matt at Louis’ back. The complete name provoked a new wave of laughs among all of them, Louis included. «You don’t pay me enough for this, man!»
«You twats», commented Oli, rolling his eyes, «I even had the van cleaned and freshen up, brought in there some pillows to have your flat asses well rested and comfortable, too».
«Hey, flat ass to who?!» interjected Krystle, the perfect fringe softly brushing her curly eyelashes.
«Definitely not Louis’».
«Except for Louis, I guess».
Louis giggled, pulling up his oversized jumper to uncover the juicy bum on his back. He looks over his shoulder to check himself out, then he hums in agreement. «Can’t say you’re all wrong, to be fair».
UNBETAED. All mistakes are mine

Central City Lemonade Stand

Summary: Teeny Tiny Thad spends the summer with Grandpa Barry and Grandma Iris.
Chapters: 3/?
Characters: Thad Thawne, Barry Allen, Iris West, August Heart, Owen Mercer, Meloni Thawne, Don Allen
Additional Tags: No Powers AU, POV Barry Allen, Don Allen is Alive, Tiny Bart and Thad, Fluff and Angst
Chapter Three: Personal Shopper
When I had a morning free, I took Thad to run errands with me. I put him in charge of the lists. I had three. A home to-do, an outdoor to-do, and a grocery list. Thad kicked his feet in the backseat as he stared out the window. "Grandpa, do I look like a girl?" Thad asked. I glanced at him from my rearview mirror.
"Do you think you look like a girl?" I asked.
"A boy at school said I looked like a girl because my hair is blond, and the teacher made him sit in the corner," Thad replied, "But I think I look like Bart."
I nodded. "Do you think Bart looks like a girl?" I questioned.
"Bart looks like Mommy," Thad answered matter-of-factly.
"That's true. And Mel is a girl," I replied, "So, I guess you look like a girl that happens to be your mother, but I don't think you could be mistaken for a girl."
"Oh. Yeah, okay... But why am I blond?" Thad asked.
"Because you have two blond grandpas. That happens sometimes. It's pretty rare with identical twins, Noodle. Did you know that?" I asked. Thad shook his head as I pulled into the parking lot, and we walked toward the farmer's market.
"Does being rare make me weird?" Thad questioned.
"Well, scientifically speaking, being an anomaly is weird... But being weird isn't a bad thing. A lot of people say I'm a little weird," I replied. Thad looked up at me and smiled.
"I think you're cool," Thad complimented me. I crouched down and gave Thad a high five.
"Thanks! I think you're cool too. That was such a kind thing to say," I commended him. He stood on his tiptoes and hugged me. I walked him to get some fruit, and he insisted on picking his produce.
Thad didn't talk much while he looked at fruits and veggies, so I didn't force conversation. It overwhelmed him when people pushed him to carry on conversations when he had other things to focus on. Besides, Thad did a great job of getting everything on my list. Thad had a one-track mind, and once he focused on a task, he stuck with it until completion. It gave me time to be in my head. I zoned out completely, and the only thing that pulled me back was Thad yanking at my arm. "Grandpa!" Thad whined as his eyes filled up with tears. I offered to pick him up, and he stomped his feet. "We can't finish the list!" Thad wept. I took the list and looked it over.
"We'll get some at the store... See, the store's that way. We'll finish the list," I reassured him as I wiped his tears away. "I know it's frustrating, but I have so much time today. Give me five big ahh hoos, please." Thad inhaled through his mouth and blew into my open palm. I learned that trick from Meloni. It worked most of the time.
After his fifth breath, I picked him up, and he touched his cheek to mine. "Did I mess up?" Thad questioned.
"Of course not! Noodle, you did such a good job! You've been so helpful today," I reassured him. I pulled the cart to the car and went to the store, still holding onto him. I made a soft clicking noise to prove to him I wasn't mad.
"Grandpa, I like that noise," Thad whispered.
"I do too... It's comforting, isn't it?" I replied. Thad nodded and smoothed my hair down in the back. "How's my special boy?"
"Your special boy?" Thad asked.
I patted him on the back. "Yeah, all my boys are special... But you're my special boy who came all the way to Central City to keep me company," I answered, "How are you, Noodle?"
"I miss Owey," Thad whispered.
I frowned. Owen usually left the country for the summer to be with his dad, and Thad was always there to send him off. "You want me to call and see if he's still in Alabama with Mel and Donny?" I asked. Thad nodded, and I put him in the basket.
I called Mel's number, and she answered almost immediately. "Is everything okay? Do you need me to come there?" Meloni asked.
"Oh no, everything's fine... Is Scout there?" I asked.
Meloni let out a sigh of relief. "Yeah, he's here. Owen, it's Papa Barry," Meloni whispered.
"Hi, Barry!" Owen exclaimed, "Everything okay?"
"Thad wanted to talk to you. I'm gonna put you on speaker," I whispered as I handed the phone to Thad.
"Hi, Owey. Are you gonna send me letters still?" Thad asked.
Owen chuckled. "Of course! Of course," Owen answered. Thad smiled. "Hey, I'm glad you called. I wanted to tell you how cool you are for going to Pop Barry's all by yourself."
"Really?" Thad asked.
"Yeah. I thought it was awesome. I still get scared going on planes by myself every summer," Owen replied. "You callin' me to say something?"
The twins had a certain tenderness for Owen that they didn't have for each other. Owen was a great kid. He was Meloni's kid from a previous relationship, but we'd known him since he was a baby. Donny was like a second father to Owen. It was good to hear Thad talk to him. "Oh wait! Don wanted to tell you something!" Owen exclaimed. "Hey, Old Man, Thad, and Pop Barry are on the phone. Tell 'em."
"Thank you, Owen... Hey Thad, hey Dad," Donny greeted. He sounded nervous.
"What's the matter, Donny?" I asked.
Thad looked up at me. "Hi, Daddy," Thad whispered.
"Hi, Thad... Um, Houston, we have a problem," Donny paused, "I'm going to the International Space Station in two years!"
"Donny! That's great news!" I shouted before remembering I was in the middle of the grocery store. Thad covered his mouth and giggled.
"Silly Grandpa... Daddy, does that mean we're moving away?" Thad asked.
"Yeah, we're gonna have to move... But we can go home once my assignment's over," Donny replied. This was Donny's dream, and I was so proud of him, but I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't afraid of what that meant for him. My son was headed to space. "Thad, I'm gonna come and see about you as soon as I can... It probably won't be until the end of the month, but I'll bring you some of your things. Do you want me to bring Craydl?"
"I have him already, Daddy," Thad answered. Don paused for a moment.
"Oh... You sure do. Are you okay?" Donny asked. "I know I didn't get to speak to you yesterday, and I wanted to apologize for how I talked to you."
Thad held the phone to his chest as if he were giving Donny a hug. "It's okay... I'm sorry, I ran away," Thad apologized, "Do you still love me?"
"Of course, I still love you. I miss you so so much," Donny reassured Thad. I was choked up. I can't lie. Donny grew up to be such a wonderful father and husband. When he was small, he was creative and emotional, while Dawn was passionate and expressive. They became such wonderful people.
"Grandpa, are you crying?" Thad asked. I kissed Thad's forehead.
"Well... A little bit. I was thinking about when Donny was your age," I answered.
"I love you, Dad," Donny whispered.
"Love you too, Donny... And I'm so proud of you," I replied. Donny said his goodbyes, and we finished grocery shopping for the week.

Fic Update (PLEASE READ)
Hey guys, this is going to be kinda long and rambled so I'll put it under a cut. I would really like if you read through it for a bit of a life update. Also you can meet one of my dogs.
I am still working on Dona Nobis Pacem, I promise you that. However, some things have been progressing in my life that has DNP on the back burner.
I have a pack of dogs, as I am a working dog handler/hobby dog trainer and have worked in the veterinary industry a bit due to this. One of my personal dogs, Brekker, has developed a leg issue. This is going to kind of go deep into it and the veterinary issues if anyone is interest. If not, feel free to skip over it.
In early September, Brekker landing weird during disc comp practice and injured his back right leg. He wouldn't put any weight on it, but being a Belgian Malinois, he doesn't really show pain so it was hard to gauge the severity of it. I ended and brought him home, making sure to give him some carprofen and watched any further issues.
After about three days, I made a vet appointment. Physical exam came back inconclusive so we continued to monitor and planned to take x-rays after the weekend if it still didn't get better. Our fear was a possible ACL/CCL tear due to him landing, or an issue with his hip. We ended up running the x-rays (since we had planned on getting them done anyways) and found nothing abnormal in the hips/knees.
I made a follow up appointment when his hock joint began swelling and becoming more tender. That's when we found a bone lesion in his hock joint. Every dog owner's worst fear came to light: cancer. Not just any cancer, but an extremely aggressive, usually fatal cancer called osteosarcoma. However, this was odd placement and we wanted to keep running tests.
The problem with osteosarcoma is it's very aggressive. Once you find it, you usually have about six months left without treatment. It metastasizes very quickly in the lungs and there's nothing that can be done. There are currently vaccine trials being conducted alongside chemotherapy patients that are showing some good results, so I immediately reached out to them.
From there, we did a bone biopsy to rule out tumorous tissue because we still had another option. A rare fungal or bacterial infection called osteomyelitis, caused when a bone fractures and gets infected. This usually leads to septic joints and bone lesions that look like osteosarcomas, but are in a different location. While the biopsy came back negative on tumor cells, it was still inconclusive with the infectious results. We also did a bone tap with was inconclusive due to contamination with a blood vessel.
Now that I am $7k in the hole with him, I'm moving to an orthopedic and surgical specialist team that will be rerunning all these tests (and I will have to continue paying for) to see if we can get a positive for the infection. Then we treat with steroids and antibiotics/antifungals.
We still have more tests top run (like a blasto urine EIA to overrule the blood fungal panel) and more meds to add on so we're a bit stressed over here.
Anyways, thank you for reading through the ramble. I am working bit by bit to get chapter six out for you guys. Here is a picture of Mr. Brekker so you can see the baby we are working hard to treat.

sorry for coming only now to tell you this but with classes it's not easy. so so where do i start jsjsj.... More than a feeling has completely my heart. indeed i finished it, right down to the last update and just let me tell you that it was a pure delight from start (yes) to finish! what i didn't tell you is abt the last two chapters ohalalala what emotions!
this chap 3 is a bit like the decisive chap that will change everything, already with their conversation abt if they already loved, for the first time they talked about their feelings, they were really taking small pinches, a lot of innuendo, bc they were talking about each other i can’t and the "can i kiss you ?" at the end was really revealing of sander's feelings for robbe and robbe answering him “yes”, ahhhh please stop and talk to you really. i also really like how supportive sander is, how he is there for robbe, listening to his feelings, helping him find his therapist, i love seeing that they can always count on each other no matter what. finally it's sander's turn to really ask robbe if he wants to continue this way (and no longer robbe as before with these multiple questions of innuendo), this kiss really made sander realize that he couldn't act like this anymore, that he really wanted more than this friends with benefits and at the end he tells robbe that he loves him. the way i screamed when i read this, my brain went error 404, it's really happening!! how can you end this chapter like this? omg this cliffhanger! hope you had posted chap 4 so early bc i know i wouldn't have survived, i'll be here every day thinking abt it lol, little thought for those who waited (or not) ahaha
then chap 4, how can i tell you that i cried a lot bc it's just so cute, it touched me a lot. still crying while writing this lol. i really like the next day confession part as well as the whole chapter. they're so cute trying to learn how to live together with their feelings revealed bc it's a little new without being too new: before they were "together" hiding their feelings for each other, now they are acting together with the real feelings in view of each other *snif* and then in this chap there is that sentence from the game abt fic in progress for which i fell in love, for which i was really interested in this fic: "you can have me in every way you" still dead having read it in the general context, it makes me feel full of emotions phew! then sander asking robbe to “ask him out again” so he can answer properly, officially the answer he wanted to answer, so sappy stoop! and as if that wasn't enough you add more, tasfia you don't do things by halves lol, all the way to put me under ground jsjsjs with sander saying that with robbe, now he knows he was once loved, that he knows true love (which echoes their conversation from ch3) still crying when reading this part bc already the feelings so strong that sander feels for robbe (and vice versa) and secondly it hurts that sander could think that no one had ever really loved him when robbe did. please, they're really adorable with their date, their messages, their kisses that have a greater meaning now that they know their feelings are mutual, their attentions like hugs, “i love you”, their habits together, their status as established couple so in love, and still have a lot to live together. and i'm really happy about that. i’m not okay when they call each other "boyfriend", "babe" bc yeah now they can say it out loud and it's satisfying, beautiful. the closing sentences had me tender, heartwarming, it was just so lovely, so symbolic with this notion of the universe, i cried even more jsjsjs
in ccl, i'm very happy to have read this fic, it made me feel a lot of emotions that only grew until the end. and then at the moment, i focus a lot on the meaning of the titles of fics i read and this one makes me feel a lot bc it sums up what sander and robbe feel during the friends with benefits but also currently being together: they love each other with an even more intense love bcit's reciprocal and they don't have to hide anymore for fear that the other one won't feel the same. what i'm trying to say is that it will always be more of than a feeling what they feel for each other bc this pact has lasted 3 years, 3 years of permanent courtship, of laughter, of solidarity, of many emotions... so 3 years of love that has developed, increased and grown. what they feel with each other, for each other, is more than a simple feeling, a temporary feeling, it's something much bigger than a feeling, you know? it's real, it's the two of them, the present and the future. i’m not okay emotionally by rambling, so i'll shut up now, just tell you that i really LOVE reading you tasfia, it's always so sweet, so loving, so symbolic. your stories really give me butterflies in my stomach💗💗 thank you so much for this one✨
PAM omg how do I respond to this lovely message I’m gonna cry 😭😭💕💕💕
Thank you so much!!! 🥺🥺💕💕 yesss that’s what I was going for with chp 3 with just a lot of tension and unspoken words because they couldn’t admit their feelings and a lot of softness in between because they are still friends after all and they’ve known each other for 3 years now 🥺🤧 and hahaha yeah I had to do a little rewrite on the confession scene bc I wanted it to be softer but I’m glad you didn’t have to wait too long for the next update which I apologize to those who did have to wait a whole month for it 🥺😅
And yesss chapter 4 was about them figuring out how to be a couple and the fact that they’re still really friends so like things changed but they also didn’t and I just wanted to show the development through it all. I also wanted to carry out some character arcs and finish up on their development as individuals so that’s what the last chapter deals with for sander since Robbe’s is pretty much done. In all honesty I was gonna have this fic be a one shot and stop at the date (I wasn’t even gonna write them going on the date just that they had plans for one AKSJDJJDA 🙈) but I’m glad I continued and I’m glad you enjoyed it and that it made you feel a lot of emotions bc that’s also what I was going for with this story, was to evoke some emotions in one way or another for the reader.
Thank you so much for your words and I’m really happy that you liked it!! I hope you’ll stick around for the last chapter when I get around to it!!! 🥰🥰🥰

Chapter One: Newest Detective
I came in from a crime scene to fill out paperwork in my lab. There was a sticky note on my door, and I assumed it was a joke from my coworkers, but I took it and read it. "Do not disturb, unless Barry," I read aloud, "Unless Barry? What does that mean?" I could tell it was August's handwriting, so I went inside. I almost didn't notice the bundle of blankets in my desk chair while tidying up. I walked around the office, poring over my notes before I heard someone's stomach growl. The bundle of blankets moved, and I jumped. I thought it was a kitten or a puppy that August picked up. Then I got a closer look at the blankets. They were Thad's baby blankets.
"Noodle?" I asked as I removed the blankets and picked up my grandson. He wrapped his arms around my neck, and I plopped down in my chair, wondering how he got into my office. "Where's Donny and Mel?"
"At home," Thad mumbled into my shoulder, "I ran away." My heart dropped as I realized how dangerous his trip must've been, and I wondered why Mel and Donny didn't call me.
"Okay. Well, we should call so your parents know you're safe," I whispered. Thad shook his head. "Come on, Noodle. For me?"
Thad nodded. "I don't want to talk, though," Thad replied. I rubbed his back as I dialed the number and put the phone on speaker.
"Hi, Grandpa Barry!" Bart answered.
"Hi, Barry!" Owen greeted.
"You fellas are one short... Where's Thad?" I asked.
"With Grandpa," Bart answered.
"Okay... Put Donny and Mel on the phone... I need to talk to them privately," I commanded gently.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Bart yelled. I could hear them scrambling to give the phone to their parents.
"Hi, Dad. Is everything okay?" Donny asked.
"Where's Noodle?" I questioned.
"At his Grandpa's," Mel chimed in.
"He has two grandpas... And he's with me," I confessed. Donny gasped. "Now, don't worry. He's alright. I think August got him settled in my office. What happened at home?"
"He got into a scuffle with Bart, and I guess we could've dealt with things better—. How did he get all the way to Kansas by himself?" Donny asked.
"I don't know yet. I can keep Thad for a little while until things cool down if you want," I suggested.
"If that's what Tad wants, then that's okay," Mel replied, "Will you tell him that we love him and give him a kiss for us, Dad?"
I insisted that Mel call me Dad. She was a sweet kid and a doting mother, and she made Donny happy. "I will, Mel. I love you, kids, okay?" I whispered.
"We love you too, Dad. We'll call you tomorrow to see if everything's okay," Donny replied.
They hung up, and I pressed a few kisses to Thad's cheek. "Hungry?" I asked. Thad nodded.
"Can we have nuggets and apples?" Thad asked. I chuckled.
"How could I say no to nuggets and apples?" I smiled as I tapped him on the nose.
Thad smiled at me. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy to have him around, even under the circumstances. He hopped down and reached for my hand. "Grandpa Barry?" Thad whispered.
"Yes, Noodle?" I asked.
"Is Grandma gonna be mad?" Thad questioned.
I thought about it for a while, so Thad knew I wasn't giving him the answer he wanted. "No, Grandma's gonna be excited to see you," I reassured him, "But I still think it'd be a good idea if I brought you home at the end of my shift instead of dropping you off."
"Okay," Thad replied. He grabbed my hand, and we left my office. We ran into August on my way out.
"Hey, you goin' out for lunch?" August asked. I nodded. "Bring me back something?"
"Can do," I replied.
I had to get his car seat out of my trunk when we got to the car, but he climbed in and helped me set it up. I buckled him in and fixed his hat on his head. He was asleep within minutes. Had it been Bart, he would've asked question after question the whole ride to the restaurant. I glanced at the backseat once we were in the drive-thru, and Thad had his thumb in his mouth. "Noodle, we're here. Still want nuggets and apples?" I asked. He nodded, still half-asleep. I ordered our food and got him a toy on my way back. "We've got a few more hours at the precinct, and then we can go home."
Thad chewed on his apples first and stared out the window. "You can dip them in your caramel if you want," I offered. Thad shook his head.
By the time we reached the precinct, Thad had eaten the last of his apples, and he neatly folded up his bag, waiting for me to unbuckle him. Thad knew how to unbuckle himself, but he wanted to be sure it was time to get out of the car. I appreciated his caution. I let him ride on my back and held the food with one hand and our drinks with the other. August was waiting in my office when we returned, and I gave him his bag. "Grandpa get you a toy? Or should I take him in?" August joked. Thad grinned and showed August the little Hot Wheels car that came with his kid's meal. "Oh, wow! Nice Buick!"
Thad bobbed his head side-to-side proudly as he ate his nuggets. I twisted in the chair with Thad, and he looked up at me. "Grandpa Barry," Thad whispered.
"Sorry," I replied. August chuckled.
Thad finished his meal and threw his garbage away. "Did the fibers from the closet come back yet?" August asked casually.
I nodded. "No match to the fibers found on the victim's neck," I replied, "But, I did find something interesting about it. The fibers are mohair, and the mohair fabric—."
"What's mohair, Grandpa?" Thad questioned as he drank his juice. He seemed invested in the conversation as any detective would be, and I wasn't in the business of giving patronizing answers to my grandkids. They were all pretty smart kids.
I logged into my computer and completed the search for him. "It's a fabric made from goat hair that's prone to shedding, and this is not a fabric that you'd want to get wet. Mohair is prone to warping and shrinkage when exposed to water... And it's a direct match to the fibers found at two other crime scenes. The first involves a missing person's case from six months ago," I explained. August perked up.
"The Edmonds case?" August asked.
"Yup. And the Roberson case," I added.
"Still doesn't explain why there was no sign of breaking and entering," August mumbled.
"Unless they were selling sweaters," Thad whispered. We both looked at him. "Did I say something wrong, Grandpa?"
"No, I think you just gave us a lead. I'm gonna look into this, and if I find anything, you are getting the biggest ice cream cone known to man," August promised him on his way out the door.
Thad looked up at me, and I grinned. "How'd you think of that?" I asked.
"Sometimes Mommy buys things from door-to-door salesmen," Thad answered. Kids, right. I messed up his hair and took a sip of my soda.
"You're so helpful," I commended him.
"Will you tell Grandma Iris that I helped?" Thad asked. I knew why he asked, but I nodded anyway. Thad was always a bit afraid of Iris, and I could never understand why.
"Grandma's gonna ask how you got here... You know that, right?" I questioned.
"Mhm," Thad whispered.
"Are you gonna tell her?" I asked.
"Can you?" Thad replied. He seemed so distraught I couldn't be moved to chuckle. I kissed the top of his head to reassure him.
"You'd have to tell me how you got here first," I explained.

Chapter Two: Little Chef
I got home close to dinnertime and helped Thad unpack in the guest room before I ran him a bath and let him change into his pajamas. I put his blankets in the wash and cleaned up for dinner before Iris came home. We still had an hour or so until then. I sat him at the table and sliced vegetables together while watching tv. "Is Grandma gonna punish me?" Thad questioned.
"No, I don't think she will. I also think the element of surprise is on your side," I reassured, "But I still have to know how you got here, so maybe I can help you out."
"I asked an old lady if I could sit with her, and she held my hand when we got on the bus... So it looked like I was with her," Thad explained. I felt a wave of dread wash over me and whispered something to myself. "Are you mad?"
"No, I'm not mad. I'm—. The world is a big place, Noodle, and in that big place, there are good people... And some people aren't very nice. That's why we don't talk to people we don't know," I explained without trying to upset him. Thad stopped prepping dinner with me and gave me this inquisitive look that showed I'd been too vague.
"Are all people you don't know bad people?" Thad questioned.
"No, you were fortunate to talk to someone kind and trustworthy. I love you so much... I don't want you finding out what a bad grown-up is like," I replied. Thad screwed up his face and walked over to me in tears. "Oh no, Noodle... It's alright. You didn't know."
"I'm sorry, Grandpa," Thad wept. I scooped him up and rubbed his back.
I hated when he cried. He and Bart had big innocent eyes that seemed to fill with rivers of tears. Bart usually didn't get teary-eyed with me, but Thad took any form of corrective criticism as overt disapproval or rejection. I tried to appease him with kisses and small words of encouragement until he calmed down enough to sit quietly on my lap. "Do you want to help me finish dinner so we can surprise Grandma?" I asked. Thad nodded and hopped off my knee to grab his vegetables. "Wow, look at that! You cut your vegetables exactly how I needed them!"
Thad giggled and followed me to the kitchen, where I started cooking dinner. I heard the door and asked Thad to stay in the kitchen. "Can I make something?" Thad questioned. I nodded.
I met Iris at the door, helped her out of her coat, and took her purse. "How was your day?" I asked in a singsong voice.
"You know a woman tried to mow me down in her car," Iris replied casually, "So, I'm doing fine."
"Did you get the plate numbers?" I asked.
"Barry... I got my story," Iris smiled as she kissed my cheek. "Dinner smells good. How was your day?"
"It's been eventful. I think we're about to catch a serial killer slash kidnapper," I replied. Iris congratulated me and moved forward toward the kitchen. I grabbed her hand. "I want to tell you something before you get to the kitchen. We have a guest."
"A guest?" Iris asked, raising her brow.
I took her to the living room and sat her down. "Wait right here," I whispered as I returned to the kitchen.
"Noodle, what are you doing?" I asked.
Thad stood at the counter mixing vanilla and sparkling water into a pitcher. "It's too heavy. Can you pour a glass for Grandma?" Thad asked. I nodded and poured three cups. "Thank you."
"You wanna bring Grandma's glass to her? She had a long day at work today," I nudged him. He nodded, and I followed him to the living room. Iris sat up excitedly and pressed a kiss to Thad's cheek.
"Hi, Grandma," Thad whispered.
She took a sip from her glass and set it aside as she scooped Thad up. "Aren't you a sight for sore eyes, Noodle!" Iris exclaimed. He loved it. I figured I'd explain everything to Iris after Thad went to sleep. All that mattered then was that he felt safe and loved and that Iris was happy to see him. "Are you staying with us for a long time or just tonight?"
"Can I stay all summer?" Thad asked.
"We'll ask Mel and Donny," I answered. Thad nodded. "Noodle helped make dinner. I think it's some of our best work." I took a sip of the drink Thad prepared for us and smiled. "Oh, that's good."
"Mommy taught me how to make sparkling lemonade," Thad explained.
"Well, I think you and your mommy make the perfect lemonade," Iris grinned. I left the two to talk while I checked on dinner and made everyone's plates. It felt nice to have a little one in the house for dinner. Iris and I missed the feeling of doting on our grandkids, especially during the school year.
Dinner was just what everyone needed to unwind, and we spent the afternoon watching tv together. Thad fell asleep between us during the nine o'clock news, and Iris insisted on being the one to tuck him into bed. When she returned, she looked at me and cocked her head. "How long has he been in town?" Iris questioned. Ah, yes, the interrogation. I couldn't help but go googly-eyed when she interrogated me like that. "Barry."
"He must've been in town most of the day. I got in from a crime scene, and he was curled up in my chair in my office. He ran away from home and managed to get to Central City alone. I talked to Donny and Mel, and they said we could all talk about what we're gonna do during the week," I explained, "This is all over a falling out with Bart, but I think it's more than that. I think he's fighting for his individuality."
"No more Dr. Phil for you," Iris teased. I kissed her temple. "That's a long way to go by yourself when you're as little as Noodle is..."
"I don't even wanna think about the what-ifs. When I tell you, my heart dropped when Noodle told me how he got on the train—. He's five."
"The dangers of having gifted grandchildren... All the brains but none of the natural sense of danger," Iris mumbled as she raked a hand through her hair. It terrified us more than we'd like to say. The kids were still like babies. "You talked to him?"
"Yeah, and it took almost twenty minutes to convince him I wasn't mad. You know, they thought he was in Manchester because of a misunderstanding? Thad said he went to his Grandpa's. He forgot to mention which one," I chuckled. Iris had to laugh too, but we knew we wouldn't be able to sleep. We lay awake, thinking about all the things that could've gone wrong.
