I have no excuses for this (and no regrets XD), it’s just a random drawing without context I thought of when I was writing my last fanfic and has been sitting in a corner of my room for weeks (my bad, I’m lazy 😓) The words are from “dead girl walking", a song of the musical “Heathers" which I saw in November and sometimes I still think about (I really liked it, the songs are great! But, if you want to watch it, before please read what it talks about, there are really a lot of thematics that can make someone uncomfortable) Anyways, here’s the boys! :D I miss them…

2019 FFBE Character Contest Winner– Bulwark & the Melodic Mascots

My 3rd & final entry from the contest ..that actually won :O

Concept Bulwark was the final entry that I worked on for the competition. Unlike the others (which I worked on for the months leading up to the deadline) Bulwark et al. were completed in the weekend before …that kinda sounds like cramming but that wasn’t the intention! ^^; I set out with the goal of making at least three units – one masculine, one feminine & one non-human – but couldn’t think of anything for the self-imposed creature category. Serendipitously, the idea subconsciously formed as I worked on the others while listening to Final Fantasy Soundtracks!

I started with the idea of making a chubby chocobo a one-bird-band, however, the logistics of that with little time left proved difficult. Thus came the concept of incorporating his mount role from FFXIV with some mascot pals. :>

Choosing their instrument was largely influenced by their default poses. Bergamot’s triangle doubles as a pun about Beryl, but in hindsight a CoWbell would’ve been amazingly intuitive (both shitposts coming soon!) The idea that a chocobo can’t play a sousaphone isn’t lost on me – it was kinda the point! With no lips or fingers he’s naturally terrible at it (as per the image in the bottom left). Good thing they didn’t make him TDH.. no hands!

 Their Names Their naming was probably the most fun aspect of making them (& character in general).

Bulwark is Pomelo’s stage name – much like how irl musicians don’t use their birth names when performing. Sometimes these people also use this name to headline a band. It’s kinda like how Cliff Richard’s birth name is Harry Webb but performs as the former. Then when he’s with his band they’re referred to as “Cliff Richard & The Shadows.”

I started off with Bulwark being the chonkabo’s name but then decided to give him a birth name after I gave some of the rest of the cast. Bulwark is a pun on the onomatopoeia “wark” sometimes used for chocobos sounds, but originally had double meaning as he was initially designed as a tank (bulwark meaning buttress).

Pomelo, Oroblanco & Bergamot are all citrus fruits (with colours & size ratios akin to their namesakes). Moop was chosen from a list of brainstormed moogly names ‘cause it (apparently) means “to wander about bewildered” in old Scottish. That is what would’ve happened if his pals didn’t join him on his journey so they tagged along. Another Scottish word moup (that can also be spelt moop), means to nibble like a rabbit, which I imagine moogles might (I’m not Scottish so forgive me if my minimal internet knowledge is completely wrong!)

As to why Bulwark/Pomelo isn’t then included in the “melodic mascots” part of the band’s name – it’s ‘cause he’s melodically challenged (if you take a look at their magic animation, the rest are all covering their ears lol). The others carry him musically while he carries them physically.

My drawing skills have improved so much since then. I hope to draw a few more art of them now that they’re finally in the game (especially that brave shift!) I think their Brave Shift should have a different stage name if anyone's interested on brainstorming an unofficial one.
