Directors commentary: Lexi and Fez re-meeting in the master chief au

Okay. ::claps hands together:: I really wanted it to feel like a slow-motion, time stopping sort of moment here. Like the whole room full of people and film equipment had shrunk down to just the two of them. I think I was able to convey that in their meeting. But also Rue and Faye knowing they were bound to run into each other. They were definitely hoping to get a chance to bring it up to their respective person in order to let them know what was about to happen, but didn't get the chance to do it. It needed to be Dramatique(TM) without being like, enough to throw both of them off their games. Just a little shocking, but something they could both rebound from and be able to settle back into their groove in order to cook. Also - I was making literally everything up about the audition process for MasterChef! It's for sure wildly inaccurate but it made it fucking fun.

He knows for certain all color has drained from his face as Faye catches up to him and Rue takes a giant side step to reveal the reason she’s actually here today. It seems that she was unavailable to be his emotional support, because she’s already here for someone else, a ghost from his past who he hasn’t seen in over five years. Within seconds it’s like time has fucking stopped, and there's only one other person in this room with him, the same person he’s thought about every single fucking day since he sent that letter asking her to stay away.

“Lexi Howard,” he hears himself say softer than intended. He wonders if this is what being struck by lightning feels like?

He’s fucking up chocolate cake with an exasperated Hayes once Lexi finally steps in.

“You’re still good with numbers right?” she asks as she dumps the ruined cake batter in a garbage can.

Fez nods his head slowly. “Ain’t running books like I used to back when I was dealing, but I’ve helped Faye out with her math courses at UCLA. Numbers don’t really change Lexi.”

The brunette shares a conspiring look with Hayes. “Alright. Baking is basically science, or a math formula if you will. Memorize your basic formulas and know where you can add or subtract and you’ll have this in no time.”

He looks like he’d do anything to kiss her right now, even leans in to attempt it, but both Chef Sanchez and Joe are sitting in the front row on his side and are pointedly glaring at him while their officiant clears their throat behind them.

“Oh shit . My bad,” Fez mumbles loud enough that it gets a few titters from the front few rows.

“Hey baby, glad you made it,” he whispers down into her ear as he turns them back towards the arch they’re getting married under.

All she can do is give him her widest smile as Chef Ramsay begins the ceremony.

“Dearly beloved, we’re gathered here today for the joining of Lexi Howard and Fezco O’Neill,” the world famous chef announces in a loud, crisp voice as various guests let out cheers of excitement.

“Give me a minute!” she hollers as she pulls a camisole over her head and a pair of panties up her thighs. She tosses her robe over her minimal clothes before yanking the door open to Fezco’s bright blues and wide smile, looking at her like she’s one of the wonders of the world.

He’s holding two brown paper bags in one hand as he leans against the door frame, nodding his head towards the little table for two in Lexi’s hotel room as she secures the tie on her robe.

“Grabbed yo’ meal too. Thought you wouldn’t mind the company,” he says by way of explanation, knowing Lexi probably doesn’t need much of one—  not after their little conversation the other night at his place.

“Yeah, I just didn’t expect to see you here of all places,” she replies quietly as the PA adjusts one of their competitors' mic packs. “It’s been a long time, Fezco.”

He sighs apologetically as they are directed to head into the MasterChef kitchen set for the first time. “I know. We can talk after this, aight?”

It’s as if no time has passed at all, because instinctually Fezco places a hand on Lexi’s lower back to guide her through the doors where the three judges await. She can feel the heat of his hand through the material of her dress, and she’s pretty sure if she looked up at him that little smirk he used to wear when he was flirting with her back in the day would be firmly on his lips. She wants to roll her eyes at him, show him he doesn’t have the same effect over her at twenty-two that he did when she was seventeen, but that would be a lie.
