From A Storm Comes Blood -- MOON 7

=================
“Working hard, Gladepaw?” Gladepaw turned around as Ferncurl padded toward her. She set the twigs she had been carrying down. “Or is it more like hardly working?” He chuckled.
Gladepaw gestured at the twigs. “I’m helping Hazyblotch work on a second layer around the elders’ den,” she explained.
Ferncurl tilted his head. “Haven’t you just gotten back from hunting with Flasheye?”
Gladepaw shrugged. “It’s for the Clan.”
She hated to admit it, even to herself, but jealousy had a constant fizzle on her skin. It wasn’t deep, not a thought that was front and centre and all she obsessed over. But it was enough to frustrate her. She wasn’t a bad apprentice, no, she was average.
Nothing of note.
Flintpaw, however, was excelling. It seemed that every move they learned, he mastered before the training sessions were ever even over.
Gladepaw was happy for him, she was! She just…Why wasn’t she as good? The only conclusion she could come to is that he was better than her, plain and simple. Working until her muscles ached and then some was her way of proving those thoughts wrong.
Ferncurl seemed to notice her shadowed expression. “Y’know,” he said casually, “it’s good to contribute to the Clan, but make sure you take some time to grow up. Working isn’t everything. Now’s the time for you to get out and explore!” He sighed. “I sorta miss those days, myself.” He brushed his tail over her ears. “Think about it.” Then he padded toward the fresh-kill pile.
Gladepaw watched him leave. Was he right? It had only been a moon since they started training…Maybe she was thinking too much.
Picking up the twigs, she carried them to the elders den and set them beside where Hazyblotch and Snowfoot were pulling out dried leaves. Then, hesitating for a second, she turned and headed to the apprentices’ den.
The den was empty, save for Flintpaw, who was batting a pebble back and forth between his paws.
“What are you doing?”
Flintpaw didn’t take his eyes off of his game. “I found this really round pebble when Cloverspeck took me fishing,” he told her.
Gladepaw couldn’t contain the scoff. “You should have been paying attention.” She wasn’t sure why her tone was so mean, and instantly worried that she had upset her brother.
Flintpaw didn’t seem to notice. “We’re only apprentices once,” he explained, not really paying attention. “Gotta have fun, right?”
Annoyance dug at Gladepaw’s pelt like an irritating tick. She twisted back to the den entrance. “You play around, I’m going to help repair the elders’ den.”
===================
Flintpaw is the perfect apprentice, and though Gladepaw is close with her brother and is happy for his achievements, she can't help but feel bad, and wonders why she's not as good.
So she pushes herself hard, until Ferncurl, the other medicine cat besides her father and his apprentice, convinces her to take a break. Gladepaw goes to do so, but seeing Flintpaw--the perfect apprentice, playing after he wasn't even listening in training, resparks her frustration and she goes right back out to work.
PROMTS:
--Flintpaw plays with a pebble that he saw while distracted training, and basically tells Gladepaw YOLO.
--Ferncurl gives Glade this speech.

Ferncurl was more than likely Minnowfur's mentor.
It's nice to see that he's close to his apprentice's family!
EDIT: weird autocorrect. This is not maybe the next moon, it IS
EDIT 2: AND I JUST NOTICED HE MENTORED FLASHEYE (a warrior??) SO HE'S ALSO GLADE'S GRAND-MENTOR
Aww he’s still concerned
(maybe this is the next moon!)

I had a lot of fun browsing Plague’s Riot of Rot badge buy this year, so here is a pic of Clan Bluecrysto going to Rotcon 2024! Primavera is my badge keeper, Rainboom is my avatar dragon, and Ferncurl is my favorite hatchling. It was a lot of fun to draw!

Fernclan Lore Pt. 1
- Fernclan has its origins in Sunclan; the founding population made up of the cats left behind when the Gorseclan splinter group left. For a while, they remained Sunclan under the leader at the time; Frecklestar. Eventually, as the new Gorseclan started carving up sections of their old land; often times with conflict the Sunclan cats were not prepared for (along with a lack of will to fight old clanmates) the remaining cats decided that Sunclan as it was could no longer be, and Fernclan was formed with the election of its first leader; Fernstar. - Ferncurl had originally planned to leave with her good friend/rival Gorsethorn. She was one of the few who could match wits with him, and they had grown up together, only one moon apart in age. Ferncurl changed her mind, though her exact reasoning is lost to time. Well liked and politically minded, as well as a talented warrior despite being blind from birth, she eventually posed to Frecklestar that a new clan should form from Sunclan’s remnants, and gain its own identity; otherwise they risked being chased out by Gorseclan entirely. The entire clan voted towards this change, and with it asked Frecklestar to step down; the aged tom deciding to give way to his clan’s favoured candidate for the new age; Fernstar. - Fernstar and Gorsestar spent most of their clan’s early histories butting heads and matching tactical wits as the struggle went on to form new borders. One would outsmart the other at each new engagement. Eventually, seeing no end to the conflict, the still intact Moonclan’s leader at the time; Flowerstar, mediated a meeting between the two, where the borders were decided to be much of like that of the current arrangement; the river marking the split between them. - Fernstar was notably saddened upon the news of Gorsestar’s death. Despite their conflicts, they had once been close friends. After her own death, it was said that where she was buried had a beech tree seed planted; now the site of a massive tree. Alongside it is a small gorse bush, unable to grow well because of the shade, but having been there as long as the Fernclan cats can remember. It is believed Fernstar asked for it to be planted alongside her pre-determined gravesite before her death; honouring her old friend.
- Echoing their first leader’s wishes, all Fernclan cats are buried before trees in the forest, or have them planted above their graves. Fernclan cats believe the forest is their ancestors; protecting, providing and watching over them. They feel most comfortable in the forest’s depths, and awkward and nervy out in the open. - Fernclan are more diplomatic than the other clans, likely linked to their early formation. While the general clan authority of leader, then deputy etc remains, important matters that impact the whole clan are voted on by all cats apprentice aged and above. The leader has the ultimate say, but generally takes the will of the clan into account when deciding things. In theory, the clan can even majority vote to remove the leader, though this actually happening is exceedingly unlikely.

From A Storm Comes Blood (moon 5)

========================
“I’m boooooored,” Flintkit complained. He was running circles around his sister, though his face showed a blank expression. He was trying to feel energetic, or excited, anything but the worry that pulled at his muscles and made him want to curl up in his nest and not get up. He missed his fathers.
“Do you think Dovewave or Minnowfur is better yet?” Gladekit asked, batting at pebbles, trying to hit her brother’s moving feet–not that he noticed.
Dovewave was still sick with heat exhaustion, but Minnowfur had caught whitecough. The only able medicine cat was Ferncurl, who had to work with a sprain, and Tuftedpaw, who only had just over one moon experience.
Too, the leader and deputy were recovering from a broken bone each after a fox had knocked them off of the lower edge of the gorge.
Flintkit slowed. The small rock skimmed just past his toes. “You got better,” he pointed out. But he looked doubtful.
Gladekit sat down heavily. Movement made her look up.
Emberpaw, an apprentice one moon older than Tuftedpaw, approached with two minnows and a trout dangling from his jaws. “Hey, you two!” he greeted. “Minnowfur wanted me to make sure you’ve eaten. Would you like me to join?”
“Sure,” Gladekit shrugged, disinterested.
Emberpaw dropped one of the minnows in her paws and plopped down beside her. “What’s wrong?”
Gladekit was watching the breeze sweep at the blades of grass. “Does StarClan cure sickness?” she asked.
Emberpaw blinked at her. Then he looked at the sky, where the warriors of StarClan were just starting to appear, though it was still relatively light out. “The stars seem so distant,” he noted. Gladekit and Flintkit followed his gaze. The stars did seem rather small….so far away. He went on. “Yet I feel like our ancestors are right here, watching over us.” He was silent for a long moment, then he blinked at Gladekit. It seemed he had forgotten her question, and was now humming with his own. “Do you ever wonder, Gladekit, about our purpose in this vast Clan?”
Gladekit tilted her head.
Emberpaw smiled awkwardly. “Ah, you’re too young to be thinking about such things.” He rose to his paws, trout barely touched. “I’ll take this to the elders.” Then he padded away, leaving Flintkit and Gladekit to watch him leave in confusion.
=======================
The siblings can't visit there fathers because they're both in the medicine den and Minnowfur doesn't want to risk infecting them.
PROMPTS:
--Gladekit is batting pebbles.
--Flintkit is running around camp.
--Emberpaw has his StarClan speech.
--Dovewave is still sick with greencough. Every sickness mentioned is because it is happening in-game.
