The picture of myself and friends carrying a puppet at the #fergusonoctober March won a Pulitzer Prize this week. When brainstorming with friends, I wanted to make a puppet to symbolize the spirit and power of black youth in the movement. The product was a 10+ foot puppet with his hands up! Shout out to Patrick and Digger for making it happen. #stl #blacklivesmatter #artandactivism #nofilter

Division
(October 2014)
Tumblr media
Another thing I never thought about was all of the division that was probably within the black community.
The people who didn't want to do shit
People who had MLK-like ideals about doing things
-the Malcolm-X esque supporters
...and God knows who or what else was going on.
Like the other night we went to SLU were there was a group of people who had been occupying the space since Sunday Night. I originally thought that it was a group of SLU students who were leading the occupying movements but it wasn't. There's a group called Tribe-X that's not affiliated with the school or students or anything. They're the ones who came up with the Occupy SLU idea in the first place after 1,000 people crowded onto SLU's campus on Sunday night. After a few days the black students at SLU got involved and there started to be a clash amongst the groups about the narrative. The non-student protestors were getting pissed off because the students were trying to come and take over the whole thing and limit their voices.

Regram from the amazing @fort.negrita "For those of you that did not share, digest or commit to this the first time around, I'm going to post this one more gin... Self-reliance for Ferguson // How growing lettuce and rainwater irrigation can yield a safety net from trigger happy police? On www.fortnegrita.com, see the preview below. Peace to the protesters in Ferguson as i have no idea what it's like to be in the middle of the pepper grenades and SWAT tanks, however, #fergusonoctober could use a different approach to protecting the livelihood of black beings. Building self reliance, which is the ability to grant yourself absolute control over your own sustenance (and that of your family) by adopting sustainable planning, agriculture skills and technology that diminish systematic needs. Our kindreds rallied and demonstrated in the past, similar to #fergusonoctober, but we are still the most disregarded beings in this country. Withdraw from pleading for validity, but instead take back our existence. Define your own rules. Create your own electricity. Appoint your own authority. Teach your own kids. #selfrelianceforferguson #selfreliance #ferguson #mikebrown #protest #blackamerica #fergusonoctober #darrenwilson"

Serve and Protect
Tumblr media
(Source)
By: Trevor Neely, wRiter
For the past 400 years we have seen people of color discriminated against to the highest degree. Years and years of oppression formulated by a system of racism and bigotry has made its mark on the societies of the world, particularly the stolen land called America.
When the system of slavery started becoming the social norm, the idealistic culture for blacks was one of servitude. The European Americans who crafted this system of stupidity usually had someone to watch over their slaves if they had a huge plantation. This slave watcher was usually called the overseer. This form of regulation and control did not end when slavery did. As a matter of fact, one can truly point  to areas where it got worse.
The police have become the new overseers. They check, arrest and kill more black men in today’s society than ever before. Their main purpose, or so we are told, is to serve and protect. As we can all see, this has not been the case for years, and maybe even ever.
The United States of America has become somewhat of a hunting ground for trigger happy idiots to take their pick on the next black male they see. This has been even more evident in the past few years where black men have been killed in record amounts by cops. According to an Aug. 15 USA Today article, from 2005-2012 two black men were killed every week by a police officer. That number comes as no surprise, but what comes next is a bit of an eyebrow raiser.
The numbers reported were not complete. The article goes on to say that killings are self-reported by the police and not all of these law enforcement agencies participate so the database undercounts the actual number of deaths. Plus, the numbers are not audited after they are submitted to the FBI and the statistics on "justifiable" homicides have conflicted with independent measures of murders at the hands of police.

It is a sad time to be black in America. The shocking factor that plays into all of this is that almost a quarter of the police murders resulted in the death of a black male under the age of 21. Black men have been under the siege of European Americans for quite some time now, and it seems that the oppression continues to slither its way in the belly of this country. This time it’s just blatant disregard for human lives.
There can never really be justice on stolen land, so the land of greed and prejudice remains the way it is. The United States of Amerikkka, home of the slaves.
