Bonnie Wee Thing
@thelassthatisgone messaged me this: “I NEED A MISSING MOMENTS WHERE JAMIE THINKS OF HOW IT WOULDVE BEEN IF THEYD RAISED BREE AND FAITH TOGETHER!! Ahh!!!!! All his looks to Claire when she was holding the baby this episode 😭”
A/N: Canon Compliant within 5x04. I am going to just go ahead and give a warning to mentions of “Faith” and some of the things that happen in that episode. I just want to ensure people are in their right set of mind if they need to be. Happy reading!
& to @missclairebelle, @kkruml, @happytoobserve, @walkinginland and @ecampbellsoup who quite literally held my hand through this fic, I owe you all a dram!
I watched him from across the room. My husband was quiet, more so than usual. While we had talked about matters of the heart just shortly before, his silence felt like the two hundred year separation we had already once endured.
We had sent Alicia and Isaiah off to what was supposed to be our tent that night since we had been offered a room. Tucked back and away from all the chaos, it would allow the couple a few hours of rest and seclusion (ourselves included) until dawn broke. Once the sun rose, I would be leaving with Roger to go back to Fraser’s Ridge.
I already yearned for Jamie- and it always shocked me when I missed him like this. I had once been independent, willing and able to live (more like survive) on my own. I had done it to raise our daughter, but since I had returned, since Bree had returned to us, the mere thought of going any amount of time without my husband always made me feel uneasy.
It was the idea of not waking with his body aligned with mine, his hands running down my back the minute I first crawl into bed, the way he never fell asleep without kissing me goodnight or leaving my bed at daybreak without kissing me good morning. While I would miss those things, it was more the capacity James Fraser had for knowing what lay within my innermost being I would miss most.
He stood with his face to the fire, his mind on what I could only presume was the two lovebirds we were helping.
I sat on the edge of the bed, playing with the string on my shift. Our conversation in the forest had lit me like a match ready to ignite a fire, and now that we were alone, I wanted my husband.
Our love making was always just more than making love; it was the way our souls connected and said those things which we dare not speak aloud. There was a Faith-sized ocean between us while we had talked about Bree and Bonnie. I wanted (no needed to show him) to tell him just how much I had meant what I said. Slowly undoing the tie, I mustered some courage, “A penny for your thoughts?”
He turned to look at me and gave me a look that made me weak in the knees. I shivered as I registered his face. I could see the want, the desire, the smoldering need to possess me, yet there was a hint of some point he had left unsaid that hung in the air between us.
“Yer hair is down, Sassenach.” I could hear a small hint of playfulness in his tone.
“I know.” I took one of my medusa like curls and twirled it in between my fingers.
“Ye ken that is no’ playing fair.” He took a step towards me as he undid his belt and tossed it onto the chair.
“Mmmhmmm.” I stuck my finger out and motioned him towards me. “Come here.”
“Ye look like ye are undressing me wi’ yer eyes.” Jamie smiled as he unbuttoned his jacket-slowly and methodically, one by one.
I eyed him up and down, not even trying to hide it. “I told you, my husband is as handsome as he is jealous.” I cocked my head at him ruefully.
“What do ye think yer husband will have to say about that?”  Finishing undoing the last button, he slid out of his jacket and tossed it on the floor next to the bed. Next, his hands found way to the button on his pants. With the same prowl and methodology of his jacket, he sought to torture me.
My breathing quickened as I watched him intently. His large hands shimmied his breeks down his well-defined legs. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who had been lit with a fire earlier, and I was ready to ignite a flame. We both were.  I could sense the same eagerness radiating off of Jamie, yet there was a small hint of reserve inhabiting him too.
I looked up when his feet were within my field of vision and saw an honesty on his face that made me want to cry.
He got onto his knees right in front of me, intertwining my hands with his. I could feel the silver of my ring being twisted within his fingers. He was so beautiful, and somehow by the grace of some deity, he was mine.
“There is more you want to say,” I said rather meekly.
“Och, Sassenach.” He nearly whispered, pulling my hands to his lips. His breath was soft and warm, his stubble just the perfect length to send the chills up my back. “More a wee regret.”
I took my left hand and cradled his jaw and tilted his head up so our eyes were meeting. I could see the film of tears rising above his ocean-blue eyes.
“Faith.” I somehow got out breathlessly. Somehow, I knew his thoughts before he spoke them.
“I saw ye wi’ Bonnie and couldna help but think of her, Sassenach. I see Bree getting married, giving us wee Jemmy, bringing Roger Mac into our lives. We have Fergus- who gave us Marsali and Germain and wee Joan, and another bairn to come. He may no’ be of our blood, but he is of our hearts….”
The tears I had felt were streaming down my cheeks now. I used the hand still cradling his face and wiped his tears.
“Ye said ye regret we werena parents together, but Claire do ye really no’ see it?”
I shook my head.
“We...” His voice cracked, “Are enjoying all these things that I never thought I’d live to see. All these things I didna think I’d get to do, wi’ you.”
He took another breath and closed his eyes, leaning into my touch.
“I didna get the years wi’ ye and I am only a man, so I regret that our bairns did no’ get to live a life where we were together. I didna get to see ye wi’ our girls, the late nights, or see ye nurse them. Ye raised our child on your own and I dinna think I can ever repay ye for it. But, Claire” He said my name in that Highlander way that made it his own, “I dinna regret it because I get to do all these other things wi’ ye now. I can only wish she were here for it all, too.”
He was still kneeling before me, the weight of his body supported by my own being. It hit me like a tidal wave.
The grief.
The sense of loss.
The sense of confusion.
The agony.
He had once kneeled before me like this, when I had given him the news of what had happened to our first born. Yet now, the grief and the loss were there, but a distant memory that was wrapped in a sense of warmth. The confusion and the agony would always remain- all the things we knew we’d miss with her- yet we carried her within us, everywhere we went.
“I know.” It was the only thing I could say because like so many times before, when it came to matters of my soul, I never knew what to say.
I titled his head up to mine and reached for the hem of his shirt. Our lovemaking was always more than just our bodies becoming one, it was a conversation between our souls for the things we didn’t know how to say to each other. Suddenly, we were just as we’d always been- a Scot and a Sassenach- a home found not within four walls but with a person.
As he stood and pushed my shift down my shoulders, I knew in that moment with all the heartache, turmoil, and pain- I’d do it again, just for one more night with him.

Ho! The house! 🗣
When I grow up, I want a personalized guided tour of the Big House on Fraser’s Ridge
The moment the last tenant hangs up his tool belt, I want to walk back and forth through that breezeway. Peek into every cupboard. Climb every stair. Rootle through every cubbyhole. Jump on every bed. There is so much to see, and touch, and smell… and I want to DO IT ALL!

Thoughts & Observations: S5E3 Free Will
Marsali is already proving to be the perfect apprentice. She’s motivated, inquisitive, intelligent, detail-oriented, logical, and curious about all sorts of new-fangled ideas and things there in Boston. Just wait till she tastes those cream pies.
Claire’s voiceover almost needs a Dun Dun Dun… soundtrack. Let’s hope she dares history with caution, and the copy of Dr. Rawlings’ Recommendations Fergus delivers to the printer doesn’t include scrawls and doodles of anything too new-fangled.
Really like the Jamie Payne (director) – Luke Schelhass (writer) combo! 😃
No doubt many people echoed Jamie’s Deo gratius when they realized we were being treated to a JamieClaire-centric episode. It worked well for me, but so did Between Two Fires. I find each of Jamie and Claire compelling on their own, pursing their individual interests and causes. I also like seeing their relationships with other characters. Call me kooky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Callback #1: This one takes place in a kind of Upside Down. Remember S4E5 Savages, when Jamie returned to the Ridge from Woolam’s Creek, happy after discovering #MurtaghSaved? A shotgun-armed Claire was unable to sleep after the tragedies of Petronella’s and her baby’s measle deaths and Adawehi’s murder.
In Free Will, Jamie returns to the Ridge from Hillsborough, stunned by the Regulators’ tarring and feathering and by Lieutenant Knox’s murdering Ethan MacKinnon, and anxious about needing to form a militia. Despite missing Jamie while he’s away, Claire’s work on the Ridge and interaction with her children and grandchildren satisfies her and allows her to sleep soundly.
Fergus takes a mean shorthand! 🖌
We hear the first of many “Roger Mac(s)” to come.
“We’ll be taking yer whisky with us to share with the men. The finest I’ve tasted since leaving Scotland.” Fergus Claudel Fraser: Official Distiller of Fraser’s Ridge (I love this adaptation! I don’t think I mentioned in my The Fiery Cross episode review how much I loved Jamie’s calling Fergus to stand by his hand. Fergus, like Young Ian, is a man of worth.)
⚠️ Murtz Alert ⚠️ Oops… False alarm… 🙁 Fraser’s Ridge workforce includes a lot of silver-haired, ponytail-wearing tenants. 🤷🏻‍♀️
“Mr. Trouble” 😂 Too bad wee Robin Scott, who plays Germain, would be too young to attend most of the cast’s social outings. He would be the life of the party. 🎉
Does Marsali need Brianna’s help with reading because medical books are advanced academics and Brianna holds a degree from M.I.T, or because Laoghaire dropped the ball and didn’t educate her daughters? It’s safe to say Laoghaire didn’t encourage them to read anything that sat on a witch’s bookshelf.
Tumblr media
Callback #2: The JamieClaire-on-horseback-led convoy’s leaving Fraser’s Ridge took me back to S2E8 The Fox’s Lair and E9 Je Suis Prest. Did you notice the pecking order? 1: Colonel & Physician. 2: Captain. 3: Official Distiller. Priorities are important, during times of peace and of war.
So… Stephen Bonnet’s free from incarceration, and recently sighted in Wilmington? How far is Wilmington from Fraser’s Ridge? Does it matter almost every fit and young man, almost every weapon, and the only doctor are on the road to Brownsville, while Bonnet’s purported child and the child’s mother are back with the not-so-fit-nor-young-nor-armed men on Fraser’s Ridge? I suppose it doesn’t, since the mother herself knows Bonnet could be consulting a map and stealing a horse as we speak. I somehow doubt her husband and named father of her child would agree… if he only knew.
Callback #3: Colonel Jamie tells Captain Roger there’s no time to train the militia, so he’ll teach them to fight like Highlanders, to gather and scatter on his command. Can you say Dougal MacKenzie in S2E9 Je Suis Prest? Sure. I knew you could.
Thank goodness for Closed Captioning. Growing up immersed in Scots (language, accents, people), I rarely “huh?” during Outlander, but I have no ear for Welsh, and John Quincy Myers keeps my clicking that CC button. And his lines are so worth understanding! 😂
Tumblr media
Callback #4: The fireside banter and guy-talk, with Claire’s being the only participant without a Y chromosome, takes me back to S1E5 Rent. Good times.
We’re slowly adding to the books’ Fraser’s Ridge roster.  We already know Isaiah Morton and Ronnie Sinclair. Around the fire we meet brothers Evan and Kenny Lindsay, and Geordie Chisholm. Isaiah Morton on his way to Brownsville? What could go wrong?
Speaking of books, so much of Fireside Chat reminded me of The Fiery Cross, right down to Jamie’s not needing to worry whether his feet or his hair might burn in order to sleep “warm.” Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Say no more.
I am very impressed with Paul Gorman’s playing the Beardsley twins, and duly impressed with his characters’ appearing onscreen at the same time. Well done! BUT… the BEST part of the entire Twins Story introduction was the explanation for Keziah’s missing britches. 😻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’re lucky, Lizzie Wemyss, I’m completely committed to Murtz, because any man who would forgo his pants to keep kittens warm is my kind of man. ❤️
I wonder if Father Fogden ever missed his mirror?
I couldn’t begin to imagine those young men’s lives. Orphaned at two, with four sisters dead at sea. Sold on a 30-year term, starved, beaten, deafened… and made to sleep in a barn that is too cold for goats.
Josiah isn’t going to avoid Claire’s scary looking medical tools for long if he keeps drawing attention to his sore throat. Owie!
More book people, People: Joan, Hugh, and Iain Òg Findlay. In The Fiery Cross Roger also meets with Iain Mòr, Joan’s brother and head of the family.
Two years, three months, and five days…
It’s probably the meds, but when Fanny Beardsley slams the door in Jamie’s face, I imagined her turning to the goats and saying, “I told ‘im we got already got one.”
Tumblr media
I’m thankful my TV’s Smell-o-Vision™ is out of order. Brianna, oh she who could not tolerate an autopsied torso, is thankful she skipped this road trip all together.
The direction, lighting, special effects, makeup, and prosthetics are excellent in this part of the episode and Mr. McCreary has outdone himself with the soundtrack. Truly a House of Horrors, Chez Beardsley.
“None of us could give him a baby.” Um, I hate to break it to you, Aaron, but I suspect it’s your problem, not any of your five wives’.
Brit Bronwyn James gives Baltimore Fanny a decent generic American accent.
Poor Jamie! He knows the pain of sending Claire back through the stones. Contemplating sending his beloved daughter and grandson, and tolerated son-in-law, is too much. 😖
Poor Fanny! To live as she has for two years, three months, and five days with that “wretch,” and awaken to see Jamie and Claire’s spooning, peacefully sleeping in her living room. I’d sneak off in the dead of night, too.
My grand-père went to Hillsborough and all I got was a wagon full of goats. 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
“I’ll do what must be done.” No foreshadowing, thank you very much. James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser has suffered enough.

Outlander: Monsters and Heroes (5x09)
This episode was chalk-full of so many adorable character moments!
Cons:
The main thing that got short shrift here was the killing of the buffalo. I don't care if the details are changed - I don't really remember the exact way it went down in the book anyway. What mostly annoyed me was that I didn't get a sense of what a big deal it really was, for them to snag a buffalo kill. Other things are going on - Jamie is on the verge of death, Marsali is having her baby... but I remember in the book, it was a huge deal that they managed to kill a buffalo. It could feed so many people. I wish that moment hadn't felt so out of the blue. It was disconnected from the rest of the story in a way that felt very... episodic? And sometimes that's how the story is, but it might have been better to either keep this part out, or shift it to another moment so we could give it the full narrative weight it deserves.
I understand tightening the pacing in order to create drama, but I was a little annoyed at Brianna running in at the very last possible second with her syringe, preventing Claire from amputating Jamie's leg. I never got the sense from reading the same part in the book that it was such a stark either/or situation here. Basically, if I recall correctly, Claire essentially opens up Jamie to the bone and pours penicillin mixture deep into the tissue, and then also injects it, all with the understanding that if it fails, they might still have to amputate. Here, it was presented like Brianna had come up with a miracle fix on the spot, and I didn't like the unnecessary heightened drama of that.
Pros:
Starting with the buffalo incident, while I questioned its place in the overall pacing of the episode, I did like the way the women all played a part, with Lizzie alerting them to the buffalo's arrival, Brianna creating a distraction to lure it away from the baby, and then Claire coming in with the kill. Jamie, grievously injured, hears the disturbance, but all he can do is pull himself weakly out the door in time to see his wife and his daughter be utter bad-asses. It's a great moment, and I wish it had been given more room to breathe in the episode.
In a big way, this episode is about Jamie's relationship to his various sons. His only biological son, William, is of course absent entirely and not even mentioned. But the episode does feature Fergus, Ian, and Roger, each with their own complex relationship to the patriarch. Roger gets the lion's share of the time, as is only right. The two of them fall into misadventure while on a hunting trip, as Jamie gets bitten by a snake. Roger cuts him, sucks the venom from the wound, and waits with him as it becomes clear that Jamie is burning up from infection. He creates a litter, and drags him a great distance, until Fergus and Ian come and find them and bring them home.
I like how not very much was really said between Roger and Jamie, and yet so much was resolved. At one point, feverish, Jamie does say that he has blamed Roger somewhat for hesitating before coming back to Brianna, but that he's glad he's there with him now. That's... about it, as far as emotional honesty about their complex relationship goes. So much is unspoken, in Jamie entrusting the secret of his plan to kill Bonnet, and in Roger saying he needs Jamie to live in order to teach him how to fight. In a later moment, Roger talks about how much the maggots are going to tickle, and Jamie says that Roger Mac is always a comfort to him. We can see from Brianna and Claire's amused and pleased expressions that they've noticed a growing warmth between the two men. There's a lot of subtlety here, as it's not like Roger and Jamie were openly hostile or cruel to each other before this. Things were... fine. Maybe slightly awkward. And now there's a new intimacy there, the fact that they've shared in danger, that Jamie had to trust Roger at his most vulnerable. Roger's relationship with Jamie is the thing I find most rewarding about his character, and I like the way it was handled here.
Then there's Ian and Fergus. The two of them have a bond that began with their time in Edinburgh with Jamie, and it was nice to see a bit of that returned here. As Jamie contemplates his injury, it becomes clear that his only chance to live might be if his leg is amputated. He makes Claire promise to let him die rather than let him live as an amputee. Ian... has some thoughts about that. He points out that his father Ian Sr., and Fergus, are both living as amputees and have happy lives. Jamie argues against it, and Ian says he's ashamed of Jamie. Later, Ian tries to stop Fergus from visiting Jamie because he worries Fergus will be upset by Jamie's attitude of preferring death over losing a limb.
Fergus, the darling little lamb, has a very different perspective on things, telling Ian about what he'd said to Jamie about being a "man of leisure" when he had first lost his hand. He was teasing, but there's a deep truth to the fact that Fergus depended on Jamie to take care of him, and that Jamie never betrayed that sacred duty. And here, Fergus says that he and Marsali try to focus on the gifts they do have, and not what they don't. He has a father who he loves, and he wants to be there for him in his time of need. That's... so very, very lovely, and I love Fergus a lot.
And I love Marsali Fraser more than words can say. First off, there's the moment at the beginning where she talks about how grateful she is to have Claire around in her advanced pregnancy. Not as a physician but... as a mother. Thinking about where these two started, and how far they've come, makes me so emotional I can hardly stand it. I love that she has taken a place in the story as Claire's apprentice. It's not from the books, but it gives her more of a presence in the story at this point, which is a great thing in my opinion. And then there's the hilarious family moment, where Fergus is playing with little Germaine and Joan, when Marsali goes suddenly into labor. Fergus is going to rush off to get Claire, but Marsali says no, it's too late, Fergus has to stay. He predictably blanches at that for a moment, but steps up and helps in the delivery of their third child, little baby Félicité. They're such a precious family. I really am curious to see how close their story remains to what happens in the books.
And we must talk about Jamie Fraser almost dying. Sam Heughan does a great job with a larger-than-life character. I think there are so many things about Jamie that he does a great job of capturing. But from reading the books, there's this quiet dignity to him, this intensity where you wouldn't dare to cross him, and not because of fear, but just because of his... presence. I don't know how to describe it exactly. I've never thought Heughan had quite encapsulated this commanding aspect of Jamie's character quite right, until this episode. The moment when he's lying, covered in sweat and white as a sheet, and he tells Roger he wants to lie in his own bed... I got chills. There was such a quiet strength, such a powerful intensity to his delivery of that line. It was present, too, in the moment where he asked Claire to give her word that she wouldn't take his leg.
Then on the flip side, you have his vulnerability, the fear in his voice when he's talking to Roger, asking him if he knows the last rights. Jamie isn't the type to overreact, so if he thinks he's dying, he has good reason. He asks to be brought to his own bed, and he asks for Claire to touch him, knowing the end is near, and knowing that his wife is the only thing that can prevent him from slipping away. Both actors performed masterfully in this scene. Jamie truly did seem to be on the verge of death, and Claire went beyond logic, beyond medicine, in her desperation to tether him to life.
So there you have it - it's crazy to think of how much of the season has already passed, given how much actually has to happen for the story to progress. While I had some pacing issues, and wish that a few things had been given more room to breathe, I was over-all very impressed with this installment!

The Strength of a High and Noble Hill (Outlander)
Chapter 33: Purpose
Masterlist
When he and Ellen first travelled back, Brian's sole purpose was to warn his parents then it became comforting and protecting his sister after her rape and the wait for Roger but now all that was sorted, he became a bit listless.
Now Brian has been thrown into building and expanding the Ridge, he has also been Da pulling him into helping with his whiskey business. Brian finds himself quite enjoying it. They go to the still to brew the newest batch of whiskey a couple of times a week.
Initially, Brian had slotted quite easily into the rhythm Da, Ian, and occasionally Murtagh, had developed but since Ian's sacrifice and Murtagh less and less able to venture outside often, it was left to just Da and Brian at first. But, due to the growth of the Ridge, a few of the other settlers, farmers, now come by to bring the barley they have grown and to put in orders for casks also helping to distribute it. The plan is to bring some of their whisky to the gathering next month at Mount Helicon.
The smell of the fresh barley used to make Brian feel sick when he first was working with it, but now he shakes it off and perseveres. He finds himself quite enjoying it, especially when he and his Da would bond over their similar professions. While journalism of the 20th century is a far cry from what Da had done in his printing business in the 1760s, Brian realises that there are similarities that they can bond over.
——
News has reached them about Hillsborough. Once again, Brian is reminded that he is living through history. The fight by the regulators is only one part of America's fight against British rule. Brian knows there's worse to come.
September 1770
Brian looks down at his new niece, Joan Laoghaire Claire Fraser. He smiles softly when she makes a small, disgruntled sound, likely still not happy with her new environment or the fact that she's wrapped up in a blanket and can't move her limbs, which is probably annoying after having just escaped a tight space.
Not for the first time he wonders about having this himself. His own family that is his. Mama has Da, Fergus has Marsali, Germain and Joan and Ellen has Roger and Jeremiah. To find someone to have this with...
Mama was lucky to find Da, someone who listened to her and did not accuse her of being a witch while Ellen had Roger who is from the future as well. Admittedly, Brian has his male privilege which means he'd have no witch hunts coming after him, but things won't be easy.
Admittedly he hasn't been too opposed to either sex. In his teenage years, when the hormones kicked in, it wasn't long until he realised that while he fantasised about girls, he would also fantasise about boys in the same way. Having crushes on Lenny and Ellena Abernathy at different points throughout knowing them was a blaring signal but the 1960s and 70s had made things a little difficult to explore even if it was legal, Brian found a way to in college with his new friends and surroundings. However, now in the 1770s, it's become even harder. Both because of its unlawfulness and the lack of opportunity.
