A Guest at Dinner
Whumptober Day 5: Poisoned
Words: 816
Characters: Fergun Lavellan, Kiili Lavellan
*************************************************
Fergun looked up from his letter when he heard the doors to his chambers open. Kiili sat up straighter on the bed, the fire he had between his fingers fading away. The smell of food pervaded the room as a pair of feet came slowly up the stairs. The woman bearing their meal smiled at him, looking around the room, as if looking for a place to set it down..
“You can set the platter there,” Fergun motioned to the table on the balcony. She jumped slightly at the sound of his voice and scurried over to the table. With what seemed to be great enthusiasm, she set the table, reached for the bottle of wine and popped the cork and poured it into the two glasses. A frown began to twitch at his lips as Kiili started to get up off the bed.
“Are you new to Skyhold? I haven’t seen your face before,” Fergun asked as she turned away from the table. She stopped in her tracks, surprise flashing briefly across her face. She shuffled her feet, unable to fully meet his eye. He smiled innocently at her, hoping to coax an answer out. Kiili had stopped getting up, and was now looking between the two of them hesitantly.
“No, sir. I’ve been here three months by my count,” She shook her head. Her eyes flicked briefly to the stairway.
“Are you sure?” Fergun persisted. There was something about her that didn’t sit right with him. Something about her cadence sounded off, unlike most of the rest of the staff. Where had he heard it before? “Then surely you’d know that my son does not drink wine, and I prefer to open and pour my own wine, as all the other kitchen staff do.”
“You don’t look very familiar to me,” Kiili rose to his feet, picking his staff up off the ground as he slowly walked towards the stairs. “I get in trouble with enough of the staff to know almost all of them.”
“I moved from the stables up to the castle not long ago. I’m easy to miss. Only been in the kitchen a few days, Sir,” She shifted ever so slightly, putting more distance between her and the table.
“Then surely they must have told you that you are required to taste our food before we eat,” Kiili crossed his arm, drumming his fingers on his staff. Fergun couldn’t help but smile at the sight of him, just the slightest of smug grins forming on his face. He had caught onto it, too.
“Theyâ€Ļ didn’t mention that bit,” She looked between the two of them and backed towards the table.
“Well, go on, then. Lady Josephine should have told you about how important these new safety protocols are, what with all the venatori activity lately,” Fergon nodded at the food and drink expectantly. “Get on with it so we can eat, girl.”
With shaking hands set sampled the food in little nibbles. Her hand stopped as she realized what came next. For several seconds she hesitated, hand hovering around the stem of the goblet. Slowly she rose it to her lips. Kiili made an audible groan.
“Hurry up, will you? I’m starving,” Kiili scowled at her. She jumped and made an audible gasp as she coughed up the wine. She stared at the wine soaking her hand in horror. A single drop of blood dripped from her nose before her eyes rolled back and she fell to the ground, seizing. Kiili took a few steps back, yelping in surprise.
He looked up when the door to the chambers burst open. Cullen, and a few soldiers came sprinting up the stairs, weapons at the ready. They stopped when they saw the servant spasming on the floor. Fergun chuckled softly as they looked--completely stunned--from the servant to him and Kiili.
“I take it you came to warn me of her?” Fergun asked.
“Yes,” Cullen said after a moment of hesitation. “We found the, ahâ€Ļ real serving girl stuffed in a closet near the kitchens. When we learned your meal had already been sent up, we came as fast as we could.
“Well, Kiili beat you to her, I’m afraid: conned her into thinking she had to taste test the food and drink before we would eat it. Although, after tonight, I fear that may have to become a new protocol,” Fergun nodded in his son’s direction
Cullen rubbed the back of his head and forced an awkward chuckle, “Just perhaps. I’ll have these men take care of her.”
“A new meal would be good, too. And wine that’s not poisoned, maybe?” Kiili looked over at Fergun, his eyes widening. “Does this mean we get to eat in the kitchens, again?”
Fergun laughed as he put an arm around his son’s shoulder, “Aye, Da’len, I think it does. She’s a poor dinner guest.”

The Nation of my Quest
Tumblr media
So the quest for my players takes place in this nation, Dilys, in the continent of Edelterre. The different colors represent the different places where the five main tribes live: the Dilynas, the Callians, the Galenians, the Ferguns, and the Wrenians (the first two tribes are named after 2 folk heroes, while the last three are named after gods and goddesses). These places act kind of like states in the nation. The capitol of the nation is Dalfon (the purple in the center, also named after a god). Representatives from the tribes / states are sent to Dalfon each month for parliamentary work.

Rothen or Akkarin? Fergun or Regin? Akkarin/Sonea or Dannyl/Tayend? (And cheating a bit, but) Alchemy, Healing or Warrior Skills?
1. Akkarin (sorry Rothen but :/)
2. Regin, no question
3. Akkarin/Sonea, but only because Dannyl and Tayend split in canon (rip)
4. Alchemy! I’m a history nerd so I’d concentrate on that shit

News from Dalfon, the capital of Dilys!
It’s that time of the month again! Of course, it’s time for the parliament of Dilys to meet! Before this month’s agenda is explained, there is some history that needs review for those who aren’t from this wonderful nation!
Dilys is an island nation to the North of Madelonia. Rather than having states, Dilys is divided by cultural and tribal divisions. There are five main tribes / clans in this nation. The northern most tribe is the Wrenian tribe, the easternmost is the Callian tribe, the southern most is the Galenian tribe, the western most is the Dilyna tribe, and the central most is the Fergun tribe. The capital city where the parliament meets is towards the center of the nation, and it is called Dalfon, after the god of weather.
For about the last 800 years, the tribes have decided  that it is in their best interest to meet centrally each month to regulate things like trade, defense, borders, and other diplomatic things of that sort. There have been issues between the tribes in the past (specifically the Ferguns and the Wrenians, which have been engaged in many battles for thousands of years), but they are often settled or pushed to the side for more pertinent matters. During these meetings in Dalfon, representatives from each tribe are sent and join in a processional up to the building. They engage in meetings (and occasionally a high court case) for about a week, and go back home until the next parliamentary meeting.
So, after that review, we are moving onto the agenda for this month.
In regards to domestic issues:
The Ferguns are seeking another border re-examination from the parliament. They say that the Wrenians were wrongly given rightful Fergun land in the last border draw-up.
The Wrenians ask that the main road through Fergun remain unmilitarized, especially during the week leading up to Parliament. The Ferguns claim that it is necessary for looting, but the Wrenians say they have been attacked when passing through. They ask that the parliament put restrictions on the Fergun military to protect Wrenian civilians.
The Galenians have requested more funding for sending their Clerics abroad and around the nation. They say that, because their clerics are the best trained on the continent, they must be sent to help cure the masses. The top Galenian Cleric shared this directly in regards to this request: “This world belongs to all of us, so it is our job to cure it.”
The Dilynas propose strengthening the Dilys navy. They claim it is necessary for Dilys to prove its strength and prepare for any combat that may arise in the future with mainland Edelterre. The Dilyna tribe leaders stated, “it is vital for our lives in Dilys, and it is what the Hero Dilyn would have wanted of us all.”
The Callians would like to increase trade of their mining products, including coal, iron, copper, and other minerals, with mainland Edelterre, along with increased trade with the tribes of Dilys. The Callians would like to emphasize trade abroad to expand their alliances and spread their trade routes further for business and recreational travel. They seek the approval of the parliament before they move ahead with trade plans.
That’s all we have planned for this month, more may arise in the coming days. Dilys looks forward to seeing the results of this meeting soon!
