Requiem for a dead mmo

I painted this around the time my beloved Fer.al shut down to cope. It was a total disaster looking back but damn it was fun. (Also wildworks you owe me 60usd)

I dedicated practically a year of my life to that game, and for what???

Rest In Peace Fer.al. (No I will not play the emulator I already mentally held a funeral for it and I have no idea how to run it anyway

Deadname signed and fanart of a game that has since burned in beta, but I’m proud of the art itself. It was a few years ago now, yet still one of the best things I’ve ever painted. water based inks for the bone esc areas, then watercolor paint used very incorrectly for the galactic bits with a white paint pen handling the stars.

Silly Game Time: What are some popular-ish things that you just don't get the appeal of? They don't have to be things you loathe nor even pet peeves, necessarily; they can be things that just puzzle you or simply spark nothing in you.

I'm quite glad a friend I have who has this as one of his favourite games doesn't have a Tumblr.

Iiiiii don't like A Hat In Time.

And I can kind of get the appeal? Some of the characters are very fun, and the worlds do have some charm to them. The music has its moments. It brings some interesting things to the table.

But, man, it doesn't really…do much with them. The story focuses on a certain character for one chapter, then goes “…but forget that's happening for a bit”, then brings them back up, goes “…but forget that's happening for a bit” again, then expects their story to have emotional payoff at the end. And that's just one character. All the others? They don't really get as much focus. They're there for one section, and then come back right at the end. One character that I like, you get more from him in…DLC. Even then, a lot of it's in the background. I want to be attached to these characters, but they don't really weave into the overall story in a satisfying way for me.

Also, the gameplay is so…jank. I get it, 3D platformers are hard to get a hold of. But, come on. I enjoyed the platforming of Fer.al more…before I learned the creators were looking into NFTs, that is. Shame. Anyways, the camera doesn't really seem to want to work with you, for one. For another, jump momentum can be inconsistent. It, for me, becomes another thing with no payoff. When I get past a tough section, my thought isn't “Oh thank goodness” or “I can't believe I did that!!” it's more just “Right, whatever, on to the next thing I guess”. The abilities you can unlock to make the game more interesting gameplay-wise are…well. Just that. Unlockable. Which is honestly a shame.
