28. Is there a certain type of person that disgusts them?

curious: people who abuse their power over others, which is why she was talkin shit about strahd the SECOND they got to barovia and HAS NOT STOPPED to this day

fennel: people who refuse to help others, despite being in a position to. 

delling: same as fennel, honestly. (they’re both from wealthy families and doing their best to pay it forward.) also, two-faced, double-dealing people. 

vannerly: people who abuse animals.

fennel’s smol dad, merryweather gildhollow

merry was one of the younger children of a large and formerly very prosperous halfling family that had fallen on hard times, which unfortunately brought out some of the worst in his parents and left them rather petty, grasping individuals. always very large for a halfling and shy when he was younger, he was dismissed by his family as simply dumb muscle - not necessarily with conscious malice, but still to the point he internalized it. he was working as a bouncer when he met the others, and it wasn’t until a lot of work and encouragement from his friends and partners until he really started to have confidence in his intelligence. having retired from adventuring with his family, he works as the town librarian.

as with every time i actually manage to produce art lately, this went up early on my patreon.

fennel’s tol dad, sindriel forelen!

sindriel was - is? - an elven prince, but thankfully a rather minor one and not any sort of heir, so there was only a minor fuss when he noped out of an arranged marriage and ran away from home. he’s rather quiet and not overly demonstrative, happiest when he’s with his family and rather withdrawn when found without. he comes off as a lot grumpier than he is and specifically works to be open with his emotions around his family, since it wasn’t something that was super important when he was growing up.  

he likes dying his hair so i had a couple of different color schemes in mind, but i ultimately decided to go with his natural hair color. as most of his skills lean toward killing people and stealing thing, and he and his partners are now wealthy, retired ex-adventurers, he’s the one who stays at home with the kids.

fennel’s mom, seraphine fairheart!

orphaned as a baby and left in the care of a temple to yondalla, sera grew up headstrong, self-sufficient, and despite her upbringing and chosen vocation, only passingly religious. her connection with her patron deity was less about worship as it was a means to an end, but as that end was always helping people, she never had any trouble when it came to having to call on her divine powers. she is, essentially, where fennel got their eternal bouncy drive to help FUCKING EVERYONE and their utter disdain for people who could help but will not (especially other members of the clergy; serpahine had MANY THINGS TO SAY, at great length and volume, about supposedly holy people who refused to help others). she also had to do most of the footwork in her early relationship with her partners, as sindriel was too shy to say anything and merry didn’t think he was good enough for them. honestly, men. 

since retiring from adventuring, she runs a clinic when she isn’t on maternity leave, and sometimes even when she is, since she’s on maternity leave A LOT.

just to round things out, here are the last two members of sera, merry, and sindriel’s adventuring party, caladenia everbright and harlow farandnear.

caladenia is half-drow, half-high elf whose mother died giving birth to them, leaving them in the care of an extreeeeeemely racist grandfather, who apparently decided to see if he could refine emotional abuse to an art form.

unlike seraphine, caladenia was deeply religious, dedicated to their patron corellon larethian with an almost fanatical passion in a desperate attempt to prove themselves to their grandfather, but actually struggled significantly as a paladin due to a deeply flawed understanding of corellon, because it turns out taking advice on religion from your hateful family doesn’t always turn out great.

after joining the party and just getting away from their grandfather in general, they were able to cultivate some semblance of self-esteem and realize they didn’t owe the bastard fucking anything. they also got a lot better at the whole paladin thing when they pledged themselves to eilistraee (after a not insignificant amount of friction with seraphine regarding their extremely different forms of worship).

caladenia was also childhood friends with sindriel and carried a torch for him for a pretty long time (until they realized what sindriel had known for ages: that caladenia wasn’t REALLY interested in him, simply the high elf ideal that sindriel represented). suffice to say they didn’t really get along with seraphine for QUITE A WHILE, but after calming down and working out some of their issues the two of them ended up as extremely close friends. caladenia and harlow are the godparents to all of sera, merry, and sin’s kids, who consider them family.

harlow is an absolutely normal dwarf mage with nothing terribly special about her jk she’s a dragon.

caladenia: so how much are you getting paid to go to the extremely dangerous witch island?

fennel: it doesn't matter how much we're being paid; what matters is helping people!

caladenia: and... i can't help but notice one of your friends is constantly wearing a mask and looks cagey as fuck.

fennel: your past doesn't matter; what you do with your present does!

caladenia: uh.... huh.

caladenia, later, furiously fantasy texting fennel's parents: your child is going to DIE because you raised an anime protagonist instead of a sensible adventurer.
