The last several mornings, I’ve been dipping into Zora Neale Hurston’s TELL MY HORSE. This is her nonfiction work about her time in Haiti and Jamaica - infused with her wit and humor. SYNOPSIS: Based on acclaimed author Zora Neale Hurston's personal experiences in Haiti and Jamaica—where she participated as an initiate rather than just an observer during her visits in the 1930s—Tell My Horse is a fascinating firsthand account of the mysteries of Voodoo. An invaluable resource and remarkable guide to Voodoo practices, rituals, and beliefs, it is a travelogue into a dark, mystical world that offers a vividly authentic picture of ceremonies, customs, and superstitions. #ZoraNealeHurston #NonFiction #Reading #AmReading #TellMyHorse #Jamaica #Haiti #Voodoo #History #Religion #Anthropology #Travel #Classic #Folklore #Memoir #AfricanAmerican #Spirituality #FemaleAuthor #BlackAuthor https://www.instagram.com/p/CoNAmfoLE0P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Memory Police: A Novel
Finalist for the International Booker Prize and the National Book Award.
On an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses—until things become much more serious. Most of the island's inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten.
When a young woman who is struggling to maintain her career as a novelist discovers that her editor is in danger from the Memory Police, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards. As fear and loss close in around them, they cling to her writing as the last way of preserving the past.
A surreal, provocative fable about the power of memory and the trauma of loss, The Memory Police is a stunning new work from one of the most exciting contemporary authors writing in any language.
A haunting Orwellian novel about the terrors of state surveillance, from the acclaimed author of The Housekeeper and the Professor. On an unnamed island, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses. . . . When a young writer discovers that her editor is in danger, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her f loorboards, and together they cling to her writing as the last way of preserving the past. Yōko Ogawa (小川 洋子) was born in Okayama, Okayama Prefecture, graduated from Waseda University, and lives in Ashiya. Since 1988, she has published more than twenty works of fiction and nonfiction.
Yōko Ogawa is able to give expression to the most subtle workings of human psychology in prose that is gentle yet penetrating.' The subtlety in part lies in the fact that Ogawa's characters often seem not to know why they are doing what they are doing. She works by accumulation of detail, a technique that is perhaps more successful in her shorter works; the slow pace of development in the longer works requires something of a deus ex machina to end them. The reader is presented with an acute description of what the protagonists, mostly but not always female, observe and feel and their somewhat alienated self-observations, some of which is a reflection of Japanese society and especially women's roles within in it. The tone of her works varies, across the works and sometimes within the longer works, from the surreal, through the grotesque and the--sometimes grotesquely--humorous, to the psychologically ambiguous and even disturbing.

❄️𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗥/𝗪𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗❄️ Hello! 👋🏼 I figured I haven't shared my face on my feed for a while.😁 This month has been pretty good for me, writing-wise. I finally got around to starting a new story that I'd been wanting to write for a while, and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's been nice to have some fresh creative energy and get back into the swing of things. I’m so excited to make more progress on Snow White and the Guardians of the Sword! 🍎⚔️ It’s been so much fun coming up with story ideas and writing out new scenes. The best part is that I feel more confident about where this story is going. I can't wait to write more this month. I want to get my novel done and out in the world! Here's to next month and a new month for Writers Write Snippets! 🙌🙌🙌 How did you do this month with your writing goals? Puck and Prejudice by
Lia Riley
a 3 star review
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon, and Lia Riley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Cute time travel plot. Pride & Prejudice with Kate & Leopold and a bit of Outlander. Trying to mansplain Hockey to a lady in 1812 was painful, it's such a 20th century sports staple it doesn't translate well. It was cute watching him try and wondering if he was going to change the future. He's watched too many movies. Lizzy is certainly a progressive lady surrounded by equally progressive women. He goal in life is to either be happily single or happily widowed. This leads us into dealings with Tuck. Cute read and well written. Not historically accurate but that's not to be expected in this case.

I’m excited to introduce you to the next incredible female leader in our Woman Rising series! Meet Ramya Julian, a tri-lingual Indian born author and illustrator who lives and creates with her family in London. Ramya’s focus is EMPOWERMENT - “of women, mothers, and others who haven't been able to reach the full limit of their potential by virtue (not virtue, actually) of their sex, race, religion, gender, nationality, caste, and every other real and imaginary rule. I'm hoping to spread this message through the medium of art - writing and illustrating - by featuring diverse heroes in picture books and featuring unlikely heroines in my novels, which are usually historical women's fiction.” Ramya’s books often rhyme while sharing important historical content focused on female leaders in history. Her illustrations are delightful and her #WonderfulWorldBookSeries collection is surely helping families around the world raise caring, empathic, female respecting, empowered children with images and stories about amazing and important women in history! #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenOnTheRise #InternationalWomensDay #LeadLikeaWoman #LeadYourOwnWay #FeminineLeadershipShines #ShineAndRise #RisingWomen #WomanRising #feminist#femalerolemodels #inspiration #femaleauthors #femaleillustrators #historicalwomensfiction #herstory #womeninstem #adalovelace #tamil #hindi #authorillustrator #femalelondonauthor #femalechildrensbookauthor #tamilwomanauthor #womensfiction #indianwomanauthor #empoweredwomenempowerwomen #feministchildrensbooks #empowerment (at London, Unιted Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpm2CKwOXJB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy International Women’s Day!!! In honor of International Women’s Day, I’m sharing a few quotes from one of my favorite authors, Sarah J. Maas. Her books are extremely feminist and empowering. They are filled to the brim with strong female characters and women supporting each other and finding their own inner strength. These quotes and many others from these series inspire me everyday. May they inspire you too! 💖✨🌙🦌 #internationalwomensday #iwd #iwd2023 #sarahjmaas #sarahjmaasquotes #acourtofmistandfury #acourtofsilverflames #acotar #throneofglass #houseofearthandblood #crescentcity #feminism #feminist #strongfemalecharacters #womensupportingwomen #femaleauthors #inspiration #favoriteauthor https://www.instagram.com/p/CpjAGzQr-lh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There’s love accumulated over stretches of time that they haven’t met and so you understand that moment when Tom and Claudia are walking in Cairo markets replete with their filth and fragrances, why he wants to buy her something….anything. They both don’t know if there is a future, times being as such, and hope is a flighty word. That desperation to offer something tangible, because who can hold love, is my favourite part of the story. It’s as human as it gets. Penelope Lively’s Claudia- the custodian of lost Hungarians, enterprising, almost fearless, leaving behind her wake of bad decisions, a spunky historian. She is a handful and age has nothing to do with it. As a feisty chit of a girl or as a supposed dowager, lying on white sheets, forgetting the names of things, pretend-sleeping through family visits- there was no point when I wasn’t rooting for her. No two people are born in the same family- siblings meet their parents at different growth trajectories, so each has a different childhood. History is something like that- how the world moves for an Indian is different for how it moves for a Ukranian, a Sudanese, an American. So when Claudia aspires to retell the history of humankind, in effect, it is her version of the world she is offering. Ambitious, much? But then we all think we have a tomorrow and the next year and a life planned till 80, so who isn’t? Travelling through time with Claudia was like diving into the vortex- levels fly past, and everything’s happening simultaneously on them. Lively was right- memory doesn’t care for chronology. Neither is it that clinical nor as neat. I loved the same version of events retold through different character perspectives. Moon Tiger isn’t a romantic read, lest my opening lines put you off. More like a manual for living- if we are going to take up space, might as well make the most of it. PS: The cover. I detest it. #moontiger #penelopelively #delhireader #delhibookstagram #bookerprizewinner #femaleauthors #readingwomen #feministbooks #bookflatlay #delhibookstafam #historicalfiction #smallbooks #recommededreading #womenwhoread #2023readingchallenge #bestbooks2023 #indianbookstagrammer (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn3YEEEL7HZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
