this episode was so good for the laois & marcille sibling in-law agenda. marcille teaching laois magic and having him try healing her, in almost any other show, would absolutely have some sort of romantic subtext.

instead we get laois having to cradle her face to heal her, with this fucking face the whole time: o_o

The discourse around Taash in DAV really shows who played previous Dragon Age games and who didn't.

The Qunari do not shut the fuck up about gender. Day one, Sten was out here telling us how gender in Qunari society works. The rigidity of their society mean gender roles are a huge, heavily enforced part of it.

Dragon Age: Origins features Sten telling a female Warden all about Qunari gender roles. Without prompting. He tells you that you're either a warrior or a woman, you cannot be both. You could be a warrior, but that negates your womanhood. And you could be a woman, but that means you can't be a warrior.

This also comes up in conversations with companions.

Morrigan: Look around you, then. You see women throughout this land, fighters and mages both. Sten: That has yet to be proven. Morrigan: Which? That they fight? Or that they are female? Sten: Either. Morrigan: So I am not truly a woman to you? Hmm. 'Tis good to know.

Likewise, the Arishok in DA2 has a wealth of things to say about female warriors. To the point he refuses to fight a female Hawke, but is persuaded by a party member (I think Fenris) stating that Hawke is a warrior, not a woman. And to the Qunari that's about as good as saying 'that's actually a man' and they roll with it.

DA:I introduces us to Krem, and Bull further expounds upon the Qunari view of gender. Largely confirming that Qunari are a-okay with trans people, because their concerns are less about what you were born with and far more about how well you conform to your role in society.

I see absolutely no issue with a) Taash being nonbinary, thereby rejecting either classification as it puts them into an incredibly narrow box or b) Taash having a conversation as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face about it because they're Qunari and that's the tradition at this point. And that's beautiful.

Like, listen, just as how you can anticipate doing battle with a ferocious fire breathing lizard you can fucking bet that a Qunari is going to sit us down to tell us all about their feelings on gender.

something with regards to the kids in fic thing that really reflects perceptions of kids in reality imho is like. So much of the perception of kids in media is like pregnancy and babyhood till five years old, and then they kind of disappear until they’re precociously wise mini adult teenagers. Everything in between is kind of an invisible no man’s land and I think really sharpened for girls too, who are someone’s baby until they’re suddenly a grown-ass perceptive woman, and it leaves out so many of the reaaaalllly awkward teenage girl years as well as the fact society still kind of keeps drawing a blank about how to parent or recognize teenagers and young adults?

the thing about the three johto protagonists is that no matter how you look at it, kris IS, in fact, the cool one. like if you sideline her to just being a professor's assistant then my first automatic thought is that you're copying crystal from pokéspe because you didn't know what else to do with her (and you've also probably only ever played the remakes and/or pokémon masters). but like. all you have to do is look at her canonical in-game sprite to see how she presents herself to the world. and even if you don't pay attention to a single other detail about her in the game (and there are Many) you can literally see the coolness radiating off of her. also a kind of arrogance matched only by silver's beginning sprite but that just makes her cooler imo
