About the effigy burning at Unorthodox Paradox May 2014 Fellfoot Woods Lake Windamere —(from my notepad)— The weekend was immensely powerful : I saw a tree emerge from flames of a burning effigy of two spirals conjoined. As the spiral sculpture burnt it’s layers of willow and paper the bark of a tall slender silver birch tree formed out of the ashes. The top of the sculpture erupted into chimney orange fountain of gentle embers drifting off into the night. To add greater affect,storm clouds that.had gathered overhead abated revealing a velvet of clear twilight yawning out above. The embers meanwhile, on their ascent to the renewed heavens, singed the sides of the tops of real silver birches. The sculpture continued to burn revealing a halo of gold and from this sprung shoots of a mythical tree of flames and branches grew ever outwards. The embers shot from these branches into the moonlit skies. I don’t know what the rest of the crowd saw or how much of this was predetermined. but that is what I witnessed with my eyes.

All that was left was smoldering slag heap of gnarled branches with two burning ires forming incinery orbs. At a glance I thought it had deliberately formed the hilt of a sword stuck in the ground with two skulls. But this may have been shapes in the smoke and mirages in the dying flames. But perhaps it was a ceremonial semitar smoldering?

Was all quite beautiful. Much later, the following day, I saw a piece of art pinned up made out of acrylics that looked exactly the same. I was left thinkin how much of these ceremonies were genuine pagan ritual and how much was sublime satire.
